MacBook :: 750gb WD Passport Does Not Fit?

Jul 21, 2010

Just to give anybody who doesn't know a heads up. The 750gb passport se drive is too tall for a macbook. At least my model (3,1).

Can anybody point me in the direction of another good external drive that is 750 or bigger that will fit?

Also carbon copier reformatted the drive for the mac. How do I change it back and reset it to factory settings?

MacBook Pro :: 3TB Drive Only Shows Up On It As 750GB?

Apr 9, 2012

I have a new Western Digital 3TB drive that I am using as an external drive in a NexStar Hard Drive Dock  to connect to my computer. I formatted it in Disk Utility but it only shows up as 746.5 GB and not the full 3TB. I formatted it through Guid Partition but the info says there is 0 partition. I don't actually need a partition, I am trying to use it as backup and copy about 2.5TB of files onto it.I have a Macbook Pro and am running Mac OS 10.5.8?

MacBook Pro :: Can't Install Mac OSX Snow Leopard On New 750GB HDD?

Oct 19, 2009

I bought a new WD 750GB Scorpio Blue and popped it into a 2009 MBP 15". Everything went fine on the hardware side, but when it came time to install the OS on the new drive everything went downhill. Leopard said it couldn't install because something was wrong with the drive. Snow Leopard just never gets past "30 minutes" remaining. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I'm guessing I have a bad HDD unless I'm somehow missing a step. Both versions of Leopard can see the HDD and can partition it and say that it's OK when I have them check it. I never had much trouble installing Windows, but for some reason installing OSX is eluding me. Any thoughts besides just sending the drive back? I've already disconnected and reconnected it without any improvement.

MacBook :: WD Scorpio Blue 750gb Hard Drive

Jul 19, 2010

I have a White MacBook version 3,1 made in 2008 w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller. Unfortunately this controller is only 1.5gb/sec. I picked up a WD7500BPVT, WD Scorpio Blue 750gb, with a spec of 3gb/sec. Western Digital tech support assured me it would step down to 1.5gb/sec, no jumpers needed (as it isn't configurable by a hardware jumper). So I install it in my MacBook, boot up from the Snow Leopard install disc but it doesn't see my fancy, schmancy 750gb drive. Is the drive not seen because of a compatibility issue w/ the SATA controller? If so, what is the largest capacity 9.5mm drive someone has installed in a MacBook w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller?

MacBook Pro :: New 2.5" WD 750GB Drive - 250Gb Or 333GB Per Platter?

Aug 7, 2009

The press release info implies that the 750GB version uses 333GB/platter technology, but they don't come right out and say it. They seem to be referring mainly to the 1TB version.

Assuming they are using the larger platters, do they simply block off the excess capacity? Does this mean the 750GB might actually be faster on average, assuming they disable the slowest blocks?I really want to put one of these in my 17" MBPRo, but I'd hate to find out later that the 750GB version is actually using "old tech" 250Gb platters.

MacBook Pro :: Frequent Hangs After Adding Seagate Momentus XT 750GB With Lion

Apr 22, 2012

I installed a Momentus XT 750 (ST750LX003-1AC154  firmware SM12) into my MacBook Pro (late 2009).  I then did a full clean install of OSX 10.7 and updated to 10.7.3.  Lately I have been getting odd hangs of applications and eventually the OS, finally I have to hard-power it down and reboot.

No SMART errors reported, PRAM and SMC have been reset.  I am on the latest firmware and EFI for this particular MacBook Pro.   I do not think that this drive is spinning down if idle.

As far as I know there is not a firmware update for the XT 750 drive and I am on SM12.

What else can I try to get this machine stable?  This is a 750GB hybrid SSD drive and I read about lots of issues with SSD and hybrid-SSD drives in previous generation MacBook Pros, particularly with Lion.

MacBook :: It Won't Recognize WD Passport

Feb 28, 2012

Recently, I plugged my WD Passport external hard drive into my Macbook's USB port. Suddenly, after over a year of working fine, the Macbook wouldn't recognize the WD Passport. The drive's blue light came on and it was whirring, but I couldn't get an icon to appear in Finder or on the desktop. I assumed the problem was with the Passport, declared it broken and got over the loss of my files. But tonight, I plugged in my boyfriend's WD Passport and encountered the same problem. It refused to recognize it, then when I unplugged it and my boyfriend plugged it back into his Macbook...nothing. His computer would no longer recognize it, even though it had worked fine not 10 minutes prior. Does that mean the problem is my Macbook?

MacBook Pro :: It Suddenly Not Recognizing WD Passport

Jun 10, 2012

I have a MacBook Pro- purchased in September of 2011- that has now stopped recognizing my WD Passport. The Passport works fine with my wife's PC laptop, but is not showing up on the MBP. The light on the Passport flashes, but that's all. It does not show up in the Finder and Time Machine is unable to perform backup.

I have first restarted the MBP and then shut down and then turned the MBP back on. Neither time did anything. I have an older SimpleTech external that it now recognizes again- after appearing not to. After multiple attempts and using both USB ports, sadly have gotten nowhere.

MacBook :: Western Digital Passport Boot With 2.1?

Feb 16, 2010

So here's the deal. I got a new WD Passport Essential + Smartware (the new one) as it was on sale. So I partitioned it with GUID map gave a nice Mac OS Extended Journaled partition then I made a FAT partition, went to my cousins PC and Ubuntuized the FAT partition with Unetbootin. I couldn't test it there because I went in a rush. Got home and tried to boot it. And of course while pressing alt it didn't recognize it. Did a little searching and supposedly Western Digital drives don't work well with PPC macs when it comes to booting. I can't test it with a LiveCD or a Windows machine. I would say it was because of the PPC issue but this is an intel mac.

MacBook Pro :: Why Is The WD 1tb 2.5 BARE Drive More Expensive Than 1tb WD Passport

I search on Newegg below, and I am confused on why a cased 1tb WD drive is cheaper than the WD 1tb Scorpio Blue bare drive?

MacBook Air :: Clear Space (old Backups) WD My Passport For Mac HD

Sep 2, 2014

I have purchased an external hard disk WD My Passport for Mac in order to backup my MacBook Air regularly (with time machine) and store films and pictures to save space from my mac. I have just realised that I have several old backups from my MacBook air stored in the hard drive which are taking quite a lot of space. I have tried deleting the old backups manually (I only need the last one, why would I need a backup from January?), however, the folder disappears but the space doesn't clear up, I'm guessing it's not possible to fully delete back ups this way.

I have read that it's possible deleting those old backups connecting the hard drive to a Windows PC but I do not have one (or any of my family or friends for that matter), surely there has to be a simpler way to clear up space from the hard drive, right? I have read to save the backup and files on my computer and then delete everything through disk utility, but I don't have enough space to keep the old backup and all the media I have stored on my HD in my mac (or another HD) in order to delete everything.

MacBook :: Western Digital Passport Drives For Internal Use?

Mar 9, 2008

I'm looking to increase my internal storage, and right now I'm potentially looking at buying a 2.5" external drive, and then taking out the 60 gigs in my macbook now and doing a switch. While I'd love to have two drives of equal capacities for time machine, the funds just aren't there right now. Anyway, I was looking at this drive: WD 160gb Passport Am I able to take this apart and put my current 60gb drive in it? And then use the 160gb for an internal? Or would it make more sense to buy an internal drive and an external enclosure. Also, should I instead get the Seagate drive, which is the same price, 40 less gbs, but a 5 year warranty. How likely are these things to break? Also, how does one go about switching the drives? I know the physical aspect of it, but how do I make sure OS X runs the same? I have a time machine backup right now, am I able to use that for a complete restore?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Not Spinning Down At Idle Under It?

Apr 24, 2012

I and several people are reporting that the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB does not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion.  Do any of you have this drive and have similar problems?  This is a notebook hard drive and I have it in my MacBook Pro (late 2009), but others report this in other models, like the late 2011 and mid 2010 MacBook Pros. The drive will only spin down when I force the laptop to sleep by choosing Sleep under the Apple menu or closing the lid. However it does not spin down under normal use, nor does it seem to let the laptop go to sleep.
