MacBook Pro :: Retina Display Sudden Shutdown?

Jun 25, 2012

So I've been using my new macbook pro with retina display for about a week now, and its shutdown several times on its own.  The computer just goes black, and then turns on with a grey screen that says it had to shutdown and is restarting.

MacBook Pro :: How Do Softwares That Aren't Retina Compatible Look On Retina Display

Jun 12, 2012

How do software that aren't retina compatible yet look on the MBP Retina Display? From my own experience as a developer when using regular sized images and resolutions on the iPhone 4, they come out as blurry. I was thinking perhaps the same thing will occur if the software isn't retina compatible? I e 2x in GUI size and scaled down?

MacBook Pro :: Sudden Shutdown Without Low Battery Warning

Nov 13, 2008

I bought a MacBook Pro September 2007, the last months I have experienced a sudden shutdown of it without any low battery warning. After browsing around the forums I found a app called Coconut Battery which I installed. This is what it showed me: What I can do to get my battery performance better? Do I have to invest in a new battery? And aren't the prices on those extreme?

MacBook Pro :: Reason For Random / Sudden Shutdown

I have experienced in the last few days a sudden shut down on my MacBook Pro. I've searched the web and found something about RSS (Random Sudden Shutdown) but I still can't find a solution.

MacBook Pro :: Sudden Shutdown Without Warning - General System Error

Apr 23, 2010

I've had my MBP since Oct of 2007. About 2 weeks ago it would not turn on so I had the logic board replaced. After I got it back it would randomly shut down, the only solution I could do is take out the battery and work at the lower clockspeed but it still shut down without warning, just less frequently. I thought it might be the power cord or the battery so I got those replaced but it is still happening. The first day I had the battery (yesterday) it worked fine, no random shutdowns, I calibrated the battery per apple instructions and today it worked great (during charge up and plugged in at full charge) for about 5 hours, then it shut down, I turned it back on and it shut down shortly after, I reset the SMC by taking out the battery and holding down the power button and putting it back in and it shut down again.

Then I tried to run the hardware test and it shut down again so now I am posting this out of frustration. I also reset the pram and it shut down again. Now it won't stay on for more than getting through the login screen. I don't have applecare but they replaced the logic board for no cost (which I don't fully understand), I'd rather not take it back but I will if you guys have no ideas. I looked up (with difficulty) the previous shutdown code: -2 (http://www.macwizard.com/errors.html) and it said it was a "General System Error (VBL Mgr, Queue) -2 vTypErr invalid queue element" but I have no idea what that means.

MacBook Pro :: External Display Is Not Waking / Retina Display Flashes Through Different Screen Views

Sep 4, 2014

My external display (HP w2207) seems to conflict with my MacBook Pro (15 inch Retina display, early 2013) since I upgraded MacBook OS to 10.9.4.The external display works at initial boot of Mac but does not work after OS sleeps and I attempt to awaken, and while the external display is not waking, the Retina display flashes through different screen views, which only partially reflect my normal screen, or do not reflect my normal screen at all.

MacBook :: Putting Display To Sleep On New With Retina Display?

Jun 16, 2012

I'm used to using the keystrokes control-shift-eject to put the display to sleep without activating the screensaver or putting the whole computer to sleep.

Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.

OS X Mavericks :: Slow Shutdown / Restart / Log Out On MBP Retina 10.9.3

Jun 17, 2014

I have been unable to shutdown or restart my MBP mid 2012 retina (2.6 GHz Intel Core i70, other than by holding down the power button.  I've tried, (safe mode, restore, repair permissions reset PVRAM. etc).  I finally got it to shutdown regularly by eliminating all Divx software on my computer (no easy task), but shutdowns and restarts still hang an unusually long time, about 15 seconds.

I send console information just before my last BOOT_TIME to see if any process in the time after restart command and boot would give any hints.  Here are the entries, and there appear to be some problems but I cannot interpret them.  I have an external WD passport drive connected (which I can eject before restarting with no noticeable effect, and a USB hub, which I also disconnect to no effect).

MacBook Pro :: Display All Of A Sudden Went To The 'white Screen Of Death'?

Mar 22, 2012

My Macbook Pro display all of a sudden went to the 'white screen of death' as I've heard others refer to it as. I've tried zapping PRAM, resetting SMC etc. to no avail. When I connect an external monitor, I am able to use the Macbook without problem, so I know it is video card/controller/display related issue. I'm going to send the Mac in for repairs. But before doing so, I'd like to erase my hard drive so I'm not sending them all of my data with the computer. I've done a time machine backup, so all is fine there as well.

My problem, is that in order to erase the hard drive, I need to boot from the OSX install disk. No matter what I try, I can't do this with my external display. If I insert the disk, and hold down the C, my Mac never recognizes the external display plugged in and so I cannot see to get to the disk utility tools on my OSX install disk. I've tried using Command-display dim button, to no avail.

I've tried simulating a clamshell mode boot where I close the lid as soon as the boot starts (with the OSX install disk in the drive) and I get a kernel panic every time. Even if I didn't, I don't see how I can close the lid at startup and hold down the C key at the same time.

MacBook Pro :: Retina Display - Is 8GB Good Enough

Jun 14, 2012

I can't imagine why I would need any more than 8GB since I'm not a professional photographer or video editor or whatever, so I'm planning on going with the base model. Smart idea? The only reason I'm even considering getting the 16GB is because the RAM isn't upgradable and I'm somewhat scared I might regret not getting the 16GB when the computer's a bit older and 16GB start to become the standard amount of RAM- if that ever happens?

MacBook Pro :: Using Retina With External Display?

Jun 15, 2012

Currently I have a MBP 15" and use it on a daily basis with both the built-in display and an external 20" (1680x1050) display. I'm getting a new MBP retina and don't know how OS X is going to manage two displays with such a big difference in dots per inch. Will the "retina-ready" apps look just fine on the retina and enormous on the external?

Magsafe 2 For Retina Display Macbook Pro

Jun 15, 2012

I've had two different MacBook Pro's since 2006.I went through 4 magsafe power adapters as the cable coming straight off the connector always began to permanently bend at the magsafe connection point such that I didn't trust it from an electrical safety point of view (after seeing one arc at that point a time or two). Then when I bought what would be my 5th power adapter, much to my positive surprise, Apple had done a redesign that had the cable coming out at a right angle with repect to the way the older ones had the cable come out. They also beefed up how the cable comes out of the magsafe end.Now I see a picture of the 85W power adapter for the new Retina display macbook pro I am planning to buy soon. And it looks like they've reverted to the old "wire straight out from the connector" approach.

That would be a significant step backward for me as where I have to plug in my mac (to the right of where I sit) having a straight cable coming out from the left of the mac is just going to cause me to start wasting power adapters again.Might I be able to continue to use the 85W power adapter I currently have on my 17 inch 2009 macbook pro? And it's not the original power adapter but one I bought maybe in 2011 or so.I love this one where the cable leaves in the direction heading out away from the top of the mac rather than the ones that came out straight to the left. And the picture of the new one appears to come out straight to the left again. And what do you even call the power adapter I have that I bought in about 2011 where the cable comes out at a right angle to the magsafe connector itself?

MacBook Pro :: Retina Display Burn-in?

Jun 16, 2012

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds. After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position). Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro :: DB Value Of The Cooling Fans For The New One With Retina Display?

Just like the title says I wanted to know what is the max and/or average dB value / noise level for the cooling fans of the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.I saw that there are asymmetrically spaced impeller blades to reduce noise, but also it says "reducing tonal impact". So there seems to be a noticeable noise level? I work in very quiet locations and have good ears, so I wondered if I better don't get one of these. I'm currently using an iMac 27" and once the hard disks are running at full speed after starting up I cannot hear anything.

MacBook Pro :: Retina Display And Streaming Non HD Video

Jun 21, 2012

how does non HD video content look on the MBP-R in Full Screen mode?

Is its blury like the non optimized Apps or website content? Is it even more blurry?

Reason why I am asking:

Watching series online on a regular screen pretty often looks ok but not great. Depending on the internet speed and the movie qualitity you can see the compression in the picture and so see the pixel. How does this look on the new retina display?

Has anyone of the early owner time and motivation to check and post a screenshot?
