So I've been using my new macbook pro with retina display for about a week now, and its shutdown several times on its own. The computer just goes black, and then turns on with a grey screen that says it had to shutdown and is restarting.Â

View 17 Replies View RelatedI've had my MBP since Oct of 2007. About 2 weeks ago it would not turn on so I had the logic board replaced. After I got it back it would randomly shut down, the only solution I could do is take out the battery and work at the lower clockspeed but it still shut down without warning, just less frequently. I thought it might be the power cord or the battery so I got those replaced but it is still happening. The first day I had the battery (yesterday) it worked fine, no random shutdowns, I calibrated the battery per apple instructions and today it worked great (during charge up and plugged in at full charge) for about 5 hours, then it shut down, I turned it back on and it shut down shortly after, I reset the SMC by taking out the battery and holding down the power button and putting it back in and it shut down again.
Then I tried to run the hardware test and it shut down again so now I am posting this out of frustration. I also reset the pram and it shut down again. Now it won't stay on for more than getting through the login screen. I don't have applecare but they replaced the logic board for no cost (which I don't fully understand), I'd rather not take it back but I will if you guys have no ideas. I looked up (with difficulty) the previous shutdown code: -2 (http://www.macwizard.com/errors.html) and it said it was a "General System Error (VBL Mgr, Queue) -2 vTypErr invalid queue element" but I have no idea what that means.
My external display (HP w2207) seems to conflict with my MacBook Pro (15 inch Retina display, early 2013) since I upgraded MacBook OS to 10.9.4.The external display works at initial boot of Mac but does not work after OS sleeps and I attempt to awaken, and while the external display is not waking, the Retina display flashes through different screen views, which only partially reflect my normal screen, or do not reflect my normal screen at all.Â

I'm used to using the keystrokes control-shift-eject to put the display to sleep without activating the screensaver or putting the whole computer to sleep.Â
Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.
I have a macbook pro with retina display that was purchased in 2012 and I am running Mavericks. I have been trying to mirror my mac to my apple tv but the the airplay icon will not display on the menu bar. I have tried turning airplay on and off on the apple tv without success. Under the display settings in system preferences it says No Devices Detected.I have already tried all the suggestions in the support pages to no avail.

I have been unable to shutdown or restart my MBP mid 2012 retina (2.6 GHz Intel Core i70, other than by holding down the power button. I've tried, (safe mode, restore, repair permissions reset PVRAM. etc). I finally got it to shutdown regularly by eliminating all Divx software on my computer (no easy task), but shutdowns and restarts still hang an unusually long time, about 15 seconds.Â
I send console information just before my last BOOT_TIME to see if any process in the time after restart command and boot would give any hints. Here are the entries, and there appear to be some problems but I cannot interpret them. I have an external WD passport drive connected (which I can eject before restarting with no noticeable effect, and a USB hub, which I also disconnect to no effect).

My Macbook Pro display all of a sudden went to the 'white screen of death' as I've heard others refer to it as. I've tried zapping PRAM, resetting SMC etc. to no avail. When I connect an external monitor, I am able to use the Macbook without problem, so I know it is video card/controller/display related issue. I'm going to send the Mac in for repairs. But before doing so, I'd like to erase my hard drive so I'm not sending them all of my data with the computer. I've done a time machine backup, so all is fine there as well.Â
My problem, is that in order to erase the hard drive, I need to boot from the OSX install disk. No matter what I try, I can't do this with my external display. If I insert the disk, and hold down the C, my Mac never recognizes the external display plugged in and so I cannot see to get to the disk utility tools on my OSX install disk. I've tried using Command-display dim button, to no avail.Â
I've tried simulating a clamshell mode boot where I close the lid as soon as the boot starts (with the OSX install disk in the drive) and I get a kernel panic every time. Even if I didn't, I don't see how I can close the lid at startup and hold down the C key at the same time. Â

I can't imagine why I would need any more than 8GB since I'm not a professional photographer or video editor or whatever, so I'm planning on going with the base model. Smart idea? The only reason I'm even considering getting the 16GB is because the RAM isn't upgradable and I'm somewhat scared I might regret not getting the 16GB when the computer's a bit older and 16GB start to become the standard amount of RAM- if that ever happens? Currently I have a MBP 15" and use it on a daily basis with both the built-in display and an external 20" (1680x1050) display. I'm getting a new MBP retina and don't know how OS X is going to manage two displays with such a big difference in dots per inch. Will the "retina-ready" apps look just fine on the retina and enormous on the external?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had two different MacBook Pro's since 2006.I went through 4 magsafe power adapters as the cable coming straight off the connector always began to permanently bend at the magsafe connection point such that I didn't trust it from an electrical safety point of view (after seeing one arc at that point a time or two).Then when I bought what would be my 5th power adapter, much to my positive surprise, Apple had done a redesign that had the cable coming out at a right angle with repect to the way the older ones had the cable come out.They also beefed up how the cable comes out of the magsafe end.Now I see a picture of the 85W power adapter for the new Retina display macbook pro I am planning to buy soon. And it looks like they've reverted to the old "wire straight out from the connector" approach.
That would be a significant step backward for me as where I have to plug in my mac (to the right of where I sit) having a straight cable coming out from the left of the mac is just going to cause me to start wasting power adapters again.Might I be able to continue to use the 85W power adapter I currently have on my 17 inch 2009 macbook pro? And it's not the original power adapter but one I bought maybe in 2011 or so.I love this one where the cable leaves in the direction heading out away from the top of the mac rather than the ones that came out straight to the left.And the picture of the new one appears to come out straight to the left again.And what do you even call the power adapter I have that I bought in about 2011 where the cable comes out at a right angle to the magsafe connector itself?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds. After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position). Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Just wanted to let everyone know I had to update Mac OSX to be able to use the superdrive on the new macbook pro retina display. Before that it would show me what was on the disk but I couldn't access it. Even after I updated it I had to browse through finder to find the drive to be able to run what was on the disk, as it didn't pop up automatically.Â
