I'm running 10.5.2 on a 2GHz C2D BlackBook. Recently I've encountered 3 symptoms that suggests Quartz Extreme stops working after the computer's been running for a while (and by a while, I mean it could only be a couple hours).
I've recently (a few days ago) set my desktop picture to change every minute. It's supposed to fade smoothly between pictures, and it did for a while, but then eventually I noticed the fading transition had stopped and the pictures were just switching without any kind of transition. The problem was resolved after a restart.
I don't use iMovie often. But I opened iMovie '08 yesterday and I got the following error message: "iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme." My only option was to quit iMovie. I noticed my desktop picture was also not doing the transitions any more. After a restart, both problems were resolved.
Today, I got the same error message in iMovie and the desktop isn't transitioning again. I haven't restarted yet, but I assume it will fix itself when I do. Also, I tried adding a widget to my dashboard to see if I get the ripple effect, to test my theory that Quartz Extreme (or is it core image, or core graphics?) stops working after a while. I did not get the ripple effect I usually get when adding a widget.
Since I just started using the changing desktop feature and 10.5.2 is a new update, I don't know if one of those could be causing the issue. I'll try turning off the desktop transitions and see if it continues.

I've just got a Radeon 9600 Pro PC/Mac edition, as the 9600XT that came with the G5 died on me last week. It's taken an age to get it working, I could only boot in safe mode, in the end I deleted all my existing ATI extensions, installed the ATI Displays 4.5.7 and it works. BUT ... (and it's a big but)... performance is VERY slow and System Profiler says Core Image and Quartz Extreme are not supported. If anyone's got any ideas I'd be most grateful.

I want to use a windows Driving Simulator on my iMac, probably using Bootcamp. The system requirements are
Graphics - Any 64MB 3D graphics card or above*
*NVidia GeForce FX or higher / ATI Radeon 9500 or higher. Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are not supported. Other integrated graphics chipsets are not supported.
I have an 20 month old iMac with a ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. Will that do? I have absolutely no idea about this stuff!

This is my (second) first post, and I tried using mrooogle to find the issue (i've been a lurker for the most part) I can't seem to find any consensus or info on it.
I have the 2.4 core i5 15" MBP with HR Glossy display, just got it on Monday, installed an owc ssd, and 8 gb of ram and i LOVE IT. The only issue is when the graphics card switches from the nVidia back to the Intel graphics, the screen briefly blanks out or "blinks" for a split second and the Intel graphics comes back on. It doesn't blink when it goes from intel to nvidia, only from nvidia back to intel.

I have a few questions regarding Radeon HD 5870 versus the 5770...
1. Does CS5 (especially photoshop) make much use of graphics cards in general, and will the 5870 make a big difference in speed over the 5770?
2. Is the 5870 going to make things louder? (i have a G5 now and it's like a jet engine, so I'm hoping for a quieter machine)
3. Will the 5870 use a lot more power than the 5770?

I recently bought the 8core Mac pro . It came with the Nvidia card. I am looking for the best graphics card that can handle extream gaming and some 3d modeling work. I am aware of the Quadro but I was told that it doesnt performs that well with gaming. Is there a way to SLI cards like on PC on Mac?

In the interest of energy savings, I think it would be great to be able to use switchable graphics on my Intel Core i7 Mac mini. Since the i7 chipset has the Intel HD3000 GPU onboard, this should be possible, but it would probably require some sort of hack or modification to the EFI. I've searched around online but only find mention of using both Intel HD3000 and discrete graphics with a Hackintosh.

Is the 8 core overkill for heavy hi-res graphic design, but low use audio and video editing?
I have no experience with the current Mac Pro's. I have a 1,1 original, but I understand that the Nehalem processor is far superior to the Woodcrest from the original.
Question is, with 3300 as the base of an 8 core, does a 2d designer really need that extra processor?

currently i have a blackbook and imac core duo, 17 ". My macbook beats the imac in everything except graphics. Before i got my imac i seriously considered a g5 dual 2.0, but the money wasnt there. I see an apple refurb dual 2.0 for 1599, and im sure i cud get one a lot cheaper used here or on another board. How much of a performance increase will i see IN APERTURE going to the PM, if any? i would need a good increase to justify it, and eve then im not sure my parents would be ok with me spending a few hundred bucks to upgrade

I get the following error...
Preview quit unexpectedly while using the ImageCaptureCore plug-in.
when I try to open a file in Preview. Same error occurs when I simply try to open Preview directly as well. It was working fine yesterday and prior to that. Haven't added any external devices or done any updates so I am not sure what happened. I did however download a game about two days ago called F18 Carrier Landing....could this be the cause...
Also here is the info that popped up with the error....

I see the numbers of everything from Core 2 Duo, to the slightly faster and cooler Core i3, to the supposedly faster core i5s and i7s. The benchmarks go up accordingly, but I found this does not always equate in a faster experience on most tasks.
Here's my experience so far on processor upgrade:
In one computer trade school re-certification class I am in, we are working with Windows Server 2003 on a Quad Xeon platform and it's incredibly slow.
But in a previous class we had the previous generation server edition on older Xeons, and while not fast, it was much better. On paper the newer multi-core Xeons should have made a difference, but could 2003 server software be that much more bloated than the previous Windows server edition that it would stall like that and make us wish we had the older setup?
I am going to try out the Adobe CS lab and put the new high end Dells to the test there and see if they work better than when we had an older CS version on older Xeon equipped Dells.
I don't know if this is something to do with Dell, or if Apple's increasing processor bumps/generations are going to similarly not make a difference in the speed things appear to go at, whether it's Adobe stuff, server stuff, or anything else that needs power.
I know somebody who plans on a Core 2 Duo, i5 or i7 MBP and I was wondering if the higher end processor is worth it in that case (iMovie being the main program of use).

There's a lot of people wondering if the 13" MBPs would have been a lot better with a Core i3 processor, but everything has been just hangups over perceived old vs. new technology, and really the only thing the Core i3 adds is Hyper-Threading, but it doesn't have Turbo Boost, which helps the Core i5/i7s tremendously. Let's compare using Geekbench since it is cross-platform and one of the few available sources of info...
Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz (~3362)
[URL]
vs.
Core i3 330m 2.13GHz (~3472)
[URL]
Core 2 Duo P8800 2.66GHz (~3700)
[URL]
vs.
Core i3 350m 2.26GHz (~3680)
[URL]
As you can see in both cases, the difference is pretty minimal indeed, and in single threaded applications, the C2D will easily outdo the Core i3 which lacks Turbo Boost and runs at lower clock rates.
And you get a 320M instead of Intel HD graphics with the new 13".
The Geekbench results from the old 15/17" to the new 15/17" are quite an order of magnitude better.
So unless people are expecting Core i5 processors in the 13", sticking to the C2D was actually a good decision, and given the differences between 2.4 and 2.53 isn't so large, one is far better buying the base 13" and then putting the money saved towards a good 7.2k HDD or SSD.
Note - I took averages of the 32-bit numbers and added them.
Note 2 - The C2D Pxxxx are 25W TDP processors, which are more efficient than the Core i3 which are 35W TDP processors. Less heat, better battery life from C2Ds.

I've been debating whether or not to upgrade my 3 year old 15" Macbook Pro that has a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) to the new 13" 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro. FYI... My current system also has 4GB of RAM. Since both systems are Core 2 Duo, what kind of speed bump am I going to see? Would this be a substantial upgrade?

Just in case Apple surprise us with a Sandybridge Quad core, and even if they don't I was wondering the following.
1 ) During sustained use in 3D gaming does a Quadcore with lower clock speeds beat a dual core with higher clock speeds.
2) Can the quoted turbo speeds be achieved in sustained use (ie 3D gaming where maximal load can be applied for a couple of hours).

Although i'm hardly impressed by the prices and specs of these 'new' machines I need one so I'm buying!
Just need to know before I make the plunge. Is the i7 variant with the extra GPU ram really worth it? I would use the extra power in my work but I honestly need to know if I'd notice any difference as for a few seconds less waiting it would hardly justify the price.
