MacBook Pro :: Replacing Broken LCD Panel

Nov 24, 2009

I have a Macbook Pro 15.4" (Model: A1211). The LCD screen is broken and Iam trying to replace it. The original panel that came with the laptop was AU Optronics (BP154W01 V.1) with native resolution of 1440x900. Since I could not get the same panel, I ordered the LG Philips, LP154W02 B1 K2, model with a native resolution of 1680x1050.

Now, when I powerup the laptop the screen remains dark and the machine does not boot up. PS: With the damaged LCD connected, I connected the laptop to an external display and everything works perfectly.

MacBook Pro :: Bottom Panel Loose On Left Side?

Sep 13, 2009

I just purchased a 13" MacBook Pro. It's the unibody one, from June. The Bottom panel, on the left side, under the wasd keys, for example, if I press under there, it makes a clicky noise, like the panel is loose. Does anyone else have this? Just want to make sure it isn't bad, that it's normal.

MacBook Pro :: Swapping MBP 15" Screen For Higher Res Panel?

Feb 10, 2010

I've been eyeing up the new 15" alu MBP but the 1440x900 screen is a bit crappy. Considering the cost of the damn thing I'd expect a higher-res screen; plus I've been staring my 15" MBP sitting beside my 1920x1200 monitor for almost 2 years and it's looking decidedly dated.

I've repaired broken laptops before, and I've got a friend with access to GSX service manuals so I'd be able to do the handwork. Unfortunately, I know damn all about panel compatibility. Basically I'd replacing a stock Apple panel with one sourced from a parts warehouse. I know Apple has a fetish for unusual mounts and hard-to-replace parts so my biggest fear would be buying a replacement panel and finding out that Apple uses panels with non-standard screw placements or brackets or something like that.

So my question is thusly, if I could find a 15.4" panel (and I know they do exist, HP has a couple of notebooks with 15.4"/1920x1200 panels) could I remove the screen from the alu MBP and drop in the replacement screen?I'd love to hear from someone who has tried it or succeeded, or even if it's just possible

MacBook :: LCD Is Dim After Replacing Inverter

Jul 16, 2009

I recently took apart my macbook to see if I could get my wifi antenna nudged to work better. It does seem to be fixed, but when I put the laptop back together the inverter cable shorted to the frame, smelled like burning electronics and stopped working. However, I put a new inverter in and it is not fixed. I was careful to note that the second inverter did not create any smell, but the screen did not even light up for a second. The LCD IS still working, as I can see everything on the screen if I shine a light on it. Except for no backlight, the computer works fine. What could possibly be wrong, and what are my options?

MacBook :: Replacing The LCD Screen?

May 6, 2012

My son broke the LCD screen on our older Macbook.  Only the upper screen is visible.  It looks like a LCD screen can be purchased for about $100 and is quite difficult to install.  Can I ask the forum's opinion if it is worth replacing this screen?  He will be entering college in the Fall and will need a PC.  It's the only mac that runs on 10.6 instead of 10.7.

MacBook Pro :: Bottom Panel Underneath Sort Of Bends Slightly Of 17"

I've recently bought the stock 17" MBP and am loving it! However just a quick question to all those who have used it. I have noticed that when I pick it up, the bottom panel underneath sort of bends slightly when my fingers press against it. It feels like the alu is bending slightly only in certain places on the base. I may just be another paranoid mac freak but has anyone else found this? I had an old 15" MBP and didn't have any similar issues with that. Loving the computer tho, the screen is fantastic!

MacBook Pro :: Logic Board Need Replacing?

Oct 12, 2010

Was watching a 720p HD movie on a plane. Movie starts to freeze up. I can move the mouse but the rest of the computer is unresponsive. I force shut down by holding the power button.

Upon restart, all seems well, I login but computer quickly becomes unresponsive again. I force shut down again.

Next restart is over 10 minutes. Gets to login screen but can't login.

I boot from install disk and run HD repair. It finds some problems and repairs them. Reboot. Same symptoms.

I decided it is the HD and archive and install. Install fails. I wipe the HD cleaned and reinstall osx.

All seems fine as I go through set up and login in. A few minutes later same unresponsiveness.

So finally I did what I shouldve done awhile ago which is swap my current hd with my old one. I do and the computer runs fine! I'm at my wits end.

Just so everyone knows, the day before all these symptoms started I swapped my stock 2x1gb ram for 2x4gb ram. I originally thought that was the problem but I've had my original ram in since I've been trying to diagnose and it's made no difference.

i need to clone and replace my internal hard drive. it's 150 GB and almost full, so I'm replacing it with a Seagate 500 GB so I can upgrade from Os x 10.4 to Snow Leopard, and generally have TONS more space

I imagine I need to format my hard drive, however I impulsively clicked 'New Image' and it began creating a disk image of the new hard drive...

MacBook Air :: Replacing 128GB SSD Drive With HDD

Jan 23, 2009

I recently bought a MBA with the 128GB SSD. When at the store I launched Word on the SSD version as well as the SATA version and there was a noticeable difference so I decided to pay the extra $700 and go with the 1.86GHz with SSD model. I use this machine for development and my builds carry out file intensive operations that delete and generate a few thousand files (when I generate javadocs). My old Dell desktop from 5 years ago completed this operation in 90 seconds but my MBA takes 400 - 700 seconds. I did some reading and all indicators seem to point to the SSD being fast for reads but slow for writes. Is this correct? I'm not sure I can deal with this slowdown for much longer and I'm thinking a having my SSD replaced with the SATA drive. Will the mac store do this? or is there any less expensive option?

MacBook Pro :: Replacing Screen With Brighter One

Jul 11, 2009

I know it's ancient tech... but I've reverted to a 12" PB after selling my uni MacBook. I've owned two of these 12" PB 1.5ghz previously, both bought new (combo+60gb hd/superdrive +80gb) and the latter one cost me some bad business deal points because I was in a meeting outside in the sunlight and I could not read the screen. I sold it with Applecare to someone on MR last year. The one I bought is used, obviously, and the screen is "fine" no dead pixels or cracks or anything, it just will only be workable inside. Does anyone have any tips on the brightest or best screen replacement I can get for this? This one has a build date of August 2005 so it's been around, though in great condition. A bit "dim" and it might be worth it if I could get a new screen that is somewhat brighter.

MacBook Pro :: When Replacing The SSD Do Just Drop It In And Load Up The OS?

Aug 19, 2009

I am going to purchasing my Macbook Pro through the college student purchase program. I am planning to get the 17" 3.06Ghz 4GB MBP model. I am just getting the weak 5400 RPM hard drive because I plan to buy the Intel X-25M SSD.

I do have a couple questions that I hope can be answered here:

1. Are there any other apple rebates currently going on right now?

2. When replacing the SSD do I just drop it in and load up the OS? Or do I need to format it in a special way? Do I need any other connections?

3. Anti-Glare vs. Glossy, the age old debate. I will mainly be working inside and I will be working with graphic and code development. Which should I get?

MacBook :: Replacing Logic Board RAM And HDD?

Feb 22, 2010

I bought a Macbook 32 month ago and my sister's Macbook is 8 month old. I do some RAM eating tasks, and all she does is type, iChat, and research.

I do Photoshop CS4, Keynote, multitasking, and some games.

Well, the problem is, I have Intel GMA 950, and my sister has nVidia 9400m. She has 2GB of RAM and I have 1GB. And I know what you are going to ask me, and yes, these two Macbooks are the SAME MODEL, just bumped up specs.

Ok, story over, and here is list of what you can do. Please answer as informative or short such as 'yes' or 'no'.

1. Will I be able to swap Logic Board and RAM from two Macbooks?

2. Will it be possible to just swap the HDD AND RAM and me and my sister will be able to keep all the same data, and I will be able to work on heavy multitasking and some good games?

MacBook Pro :: Replacing Optical Drive With SSD?

I have a time machine backup on external drive.

I would like to:

1. clean install Lion on the new SSD (120 GB)

2. restore apps from my backup on the SSD

3. keep only data on the existing HDD

My questions:

What is the best way to make it?

Can I just keep the existing system on my non-SSD HDD, and after having Lion on SSD keep just data and delete the system libraries? Or is it better to format the whole disk and restore data from time machine backup (so it is not fragmented..
