MacBook Pro :: Using SSDs / Intel X25-V 40GB Or OCZ Vertex 30GB?

Mar 30, 2010

I've been surfing the web for hours now to find the right SSD for me. I have an ExpressCard SSD which unfortunately is having too many problems so I am planning on buying the MCE OptiBay to replace the SuperDrive with a second hard drive.

So my intention is to buy a cheap/small SSD to install OS X on it and to keep the home folder on the internal drive. There seem to be two SSDs which fit into that category. I need some advice whether those two products even work on my MacBook Pro Early 2008 2,4GHz, or if there are any other incompatibilities & problems. So the two candidates are Intel X25-V 40GB or OCZ Vertex 30GB.

The OCZ offers less space and costs slightly more but neither of them are really significant as they are in my price range. The OCZ ("Read: Up to 230 MB/s & Write: Up to 135 MB/s") seems to be much faster then the Intel one ("Read: up to 170MB/s & Write: up to 35MB/s"). Especially the writing speed of the Intel X25-V is really poor, even when compared to normal HDDs.

Intel Mac :: What Is Apples' Official Position On MacKeeper

I have been using Mackeeper for several months and recently that product and its' maaketing company have been in the middle of a firestorm of public comment sand reviews. Being a csual user of computers and not having a strong background in programming or software, it is very hard to try and make sense of the extremely strong and conflicting reviews and comments on sites such as Mac Update. Does Apple have an official position on this product? Or, where can I go to get some reviews or opinions on this product without all of the vitriolic commentary?

MacBook Pro :: Wants SSDs Vs. HDs In The MBP?

Pretty much, what are the advantages of having a solid-state drive over a normal 5400 or 7200 rpm drive? Is it just speed vs. space?

MacBook Pro :: How To Replace SSDs?

Apr 17, 2010

I mentioned to someone that I was thinking of buying the optional 128 or 256SSD on the MBP I intend to buy, and perhaps in a couple of years buying an SSD of greater capacity. (The 512 is beyond my budget at present.)

The person I spoke to didn't think this was a good idea because the 128 and even the 256 would soon fill up with photos, and that I would then want a larger drive.

(Backing up an external drive is of course highly recommended, but it's pretty neat to have all one's photo collection on the computer's own drive.)

Replacing an SSD with another, he said, was a "dickens of a job" as the existing (factory) SSD is built into the mother board.

MacBook Pro :: Single SSD Or RAID 0 Array With 2 SSDs

Difficulty deciding between 1 or 2. Unsure about real world performance gain of 2. No experience with SSDs or RAID 0. Worried about alignment and sleep/hibernate issues. Stock 5400rpm 320GB will go inside eSATA enclosure. Does anybody have a good eSATA ExpressCard/34 to recommend? I don't care about the SuperDrive. But I'll keep it for Care warranty purposes.

MacBook Pro :: Regular And RAID Ready SSDs

Aug 19, 2010

I am checking out the market on SSDs for my Macbook Pro and I've found a few manufacturers differentiate their product lines as "regular" SSDs and Raid-Ready SSDs. The raid ready's being more expensive and having a little less space. I'm not as tech savvy as I should probably be, so I don't know what Raid or Raid-Ready means and what value it might have.

MacBook Pro :: Why No Official Apple Docking Station

Oct 23, 2010

Its time for me to upgrade my macbook pro(2007 model). I really want to get another mac, as they are pretty, sturdy, run windows if needed and have good battery. Problem is theres no bloomin dock! At work I have a dell latitude that I can carry around, and just sits into a dock to connect to my peripherals when I am at my desk. Most folks say its just a few wires, and only takes 30 seconds, but not really. I would have:

3 External Disks.
Speakers.
Ergonomic keyboard(not mac wireless).
Ergonomic mouse(not mighty mouse).
USB interfacing guitar pedal.
Card reader.
Monitor.

That's a short list and could be longer if I add ipods etc. My point is, or rather, my question is why don't apple do docking stations? They used to do them? Loads of other companies do them.

Mac Pro :: Striped SSDs Not Looking So Fly?

Sep 30, 2010

Recently I revamped my computer. I bought an Areca 1680 with 2GB of cache and 3 120GB Vertex 2 SSDs.

I have the 3 SSDs striped in RAID 0 on the RAID card and my old 4x 300GB VRs in RAID 5 on the same RAID card. The old drives in RAID 5 on the new card seems faster, probably due to the extra cache, but the SSDs are weirdly slow.

With Quickbench, I can't seem to push past 500MB/s for reads and 450MB/s for writes.

I'm pretty sure 2 drives can push those numbers. I know it's not a south bridge issue and the RAID card is in the second PCIe slot.

Could it be my stripe size? Right now I have it set at 64KB. Write back cache is enabled and TCQ is disabled.

(For reference my RAID 5 gets 205MB/s read and 370MB/s write for a 4GB file)

OS X :: Official Thread: SL Has Dumped GPU?

Given the vagaries of Apple's support documentation I would like to know exactly what GPUs are supported by Snow Leopard for use in Grand Central and Open CL.The list does not contain my NVIDIA Ge Force 8800 GS!After much searching it is absolutely unclear weather Apple will support the GPU or not. It is a re-branded NVIDIA chip and so is it included or excluded?

I for one will be greatly disappointed in Apple does not support it. It is one thing that my ageing powerbook will not be supported, but a computer that was top of the line iMac just in April of this year!

Mac Pro :: Re - RAID - SSDs And Boot Volumes

Jan 12, 2011

So I'm considering a new boot volume for my Mac Pro revolving around this RAID controller, since I have had great experience with 3ware's products in my Linux boxen and it really seems like $700 for the Mac raid controller is a bit much. My workflow revolves very heavily around virtualization. I've been thinking about a variety of options for SSDs and hybrid drives and even just fast laptop HDs. Am I crazy for considering 2.5" drives other than SSDs? I'm thinking of 2.5" drives because I put a pair of them in the lower optical bay without issue. The amount of storage needed on the boot volume is probably in the range of 150-200GB. Getting SSDs that size may not be in the budget. Thus, I am currently considering either a pair of 320GB WD Scorpio Blacks or a pair of 250GB Seagate Momentus XTs. I'm not sure the hybrid Momentus drives are worth it. Additionally, I know that a lot of SSDs don't fully support RAID in their firmware. Thus, I am reluctant to buy one, let alone a pair, since a lot of places don't seem to have terribly generous return conditions for SSDs. Is this a fool's errand? Should I just relegate my VMs to other storage and get a smaller SSD for the OS + apps?

Mac Pro :: Using Multi Leo/Vista Boot RAID0 Arrays From SSDs

Aug 4, 2009

As we discussed in other threads it could be particularly advantageous to use SSD RAID0 arrays for dual or even multiple booting. With a decent amount of striped SSDs the idea is to run all your operating systems and applications with high speed. At least that is the theory. To test the idea I have decided to use two Maxtor 160 GB HDD in a very basic dual RAID0 array configuration for booting OS X and Vista-64 in AHCI mode.

Here we go:

First thing I learned is that you have to partition the HDDs prior to building your array.

Second thing I learned is that you have to keep it all in HFS+ to make it work.

So now I have used disk utility to create two equal size partitions in HFS+ with GPT on both HDDs.

Next I fused the two lower partions together for a first RAID0 array named 2R-Leo. Format is still set to HFS+ and RAID0 mode is selected.

Then I fused the two upper partitions together for a second RAID0 array named 2R-Vista. Here format is also set to HFS+ and RAID0 mode is selected.

With that done I exited the disk utility to get a fresh start on it. I then entered disk utility again.

Hardware :: The Official Tablet Bitter Disappointment Thread?

Jan 26, 2010

No matter what Apple releases tomorrow morning, there will be a sizable contingent that consider it a complete and utter failure. Most bitter of these will be the folks that perceive it as being "oh so close" to exactly what they wanted, but for some number of baffling Apple decisions to "cripple" it.

So I reckon I'd get a thread started now, just to save time.By my figuring, the possible points of dismay will be:-- Doesn't run "full OS X" and is therefore "just a big iPod Touch"-- No OLED screen (we'll just call those first two "The Troubles" in honor of Ireland)-- Lack of this or that port, or any at all outside of a headphone jack and a dock connector-- Fails to deliver on various rumored subscription services-- Can't run Final Cut Pro, Aperture, Pro Tools, or various processor intensive Big Apps-- Exclusive cell service via AT&T, aka "Oh God I hate them so much my head just exploded"-- Doesn't do "video chat" out of the box
-- And, of course, the perennial: the pricing is insane and relegates the thing to niche statusI'd put money on the first two, wouldn't be at all surprised to see the next three, have no idea about the rest. However, none of that distresses me, particularly, because I expect the all-over experience of the thing to be pretty compelling, and for it to be really, really good at what it's designed to do. I'll be pleasantly surprised if its priced aggressively with an eye towards really shaking up the industry.

OS X :: Official Snow Leopard Not Support PowerPC Macs

Jun 11, 2008

Documentation included with copies of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard distributed during Apple's developer conference this week confirm that the next-generation operating system does not presently support Macs with PowerPC processors. LogicielMac.com has published a screen capture of the PDF-based requirements document included on the Snow Leopard disc that provides a rundown of the system's requirements.

The documentation states that in order to install Snow Leopard, developers must have a Mac computer with "an Intel processor" and at least 512MB of RAM, though additional memory is recommended for development purposes. The findings confirm an AppleInsider report from last September, which cited people familiar with the ongoing development of Leopard as saying that Mac OS X 10.6 would in all likelihood exclude support for PowerPC processors. According to the Snow Leopard documentation, the new system will also require an Apple-supplied video card, 9GB of hard disk space, and either an internal, external or shared DVD drive. Windows On Mac :: Install 7 With Boot Camp - Official Support?

Nov 13, 2009

I recently ordered a copy of Windows 7 Professional Full Retail (for around $30 before tax and shipping through a Microsoft phone order as a student ) and it should get here tomorrow. My Mac that I use is a mid-2009 13" 2.26GHz MacBook Pro that I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now, my question is should I wait to install Windows 7 with Boot Camp? I heard that Apple currently doesn't officially support Windows 7 on Boot Camp, but will by the end of the year. If this is the case, is the "official" support involve a complete update of the Boot Camp program or just the drivers? The reason I am asking this, is the way I got about installing operating systems is by method of complete clean installs that way everything is functioning correctly and I can perform clean, initial backups to restore from. If the update is to the Boot Camp program as a whole, I don't want to go ahead and install Windows 7, as I can see myself just re-installing it when the "official support" comes out. So should I install it or wait based on the support from Apple?

Intel Mac :: Cannot Boot From Selected External Drive On Intel Core Duo 10.4.3?

May 29, 2012

OS X 10.4.3 IMAC Intel Core Duo. I backed up my HD on an external drive so I could upgrade to Snow Leopard. I wanted to test that I could boot from the external drive and selected it as my start up drive. When I did a restart I got the Apple and the turning gear and then suddenly a black screen with this on it:
"May 28 22:23:11 Launched:com.apple.nibindd:respawning too quickly throttling, exited system abnormally bad system call too many failures in succession I have no name!"

I tried several dozen times with no luck. I think when I made the copy of my HD on the external HD I may have neglected to make it "bootable" (moving too quickly). My internal CDROM is busted so I use an external CDROM. I can't boot from it at all with the proper start up buttons pushed. It keeps trying to boot from the external drive. If I turn the external drive off and try to boot from the external CD I just get the grey file with the ? in the middle of it.

I tried using another external HD I have with OS 10.4 on it, but it won't recognize it either with fan, alt, shift, delete pressed at start up. My internal drive (a Seagate 2 tarabite drive) works great, but how do I reset it as the start up drive when I'm stuck with this black screen. One more thing, when I try to reset PRAM I don't get a second gong.
