MacBook Pro :: New 15-inch (2008) Battery Drained To 84% In 15 Minutes?
May 24, 2012
I just popped in a brand new 15-inch MBP (square) battery into my 2008 MBP with Lion 10.7.4. It has drained to 84% in about 15 minutes. Is it a defective battery or a problem with calibration?

My MacBook Pro is just under a year old.I don't do a lot of strenuous stuff... just internet, iWork documents, Sims 3, etc.The battery has been fine up until now, but on two seperate occasions it has completely drained in a matter of minutes. On the first occasion I left the MacBook open on my desk.No applications were open, just the desktop. Battery was at 98% after a full night's charge.I come back an hour later to find the computer completely unresponsive until I plug in the charger chord. It had completely drained. On the second occasion I was at 52% battery.I loaded up The Sims 3 and went to take a shower, planning to play when I got out. When I get out of the shower TEN MINUTES later, the computer was dead... once again completely drained.I know the game is a total battery hog, but I can usually get about an hour of gameplay with 52% battery.

I was working late and let my battery drain while working. The computer shut down. I immediately plugged it in but the light on the power adapter didn't turn on (either orange or green) I tried other plugging it into other outlets. Nothing. I left it plugged in all night. Nothing. No light on the adapter and the computer isn't working.

rMBP charged overnight and I woke up at 7am and disconnected it, it is 9:30am and my battery is already at 34%. What ca I do? Only running Safari although a good portion of the morning was youtube videos. Still with some YT video playbacks here and there, should it drain this quickly?

Earlier this morning, I was using battery power until the power drained quickly and unexpectedly. Once it shut down automatically, I could not turn it back on. It does not run on AC charge or battery. The mag-safe light is only a faint green, and I have reset my PMU. I'm hoping to not have to take it to Apple as it's warranty ran out about two months ago.

I have read about Macbook Pro batteries from apple.com. I use to talk to many people and ask about batteries which brought me upto this confusion. Well, my question is, should i charge macbook pro when it's battery is completely drained or it's okay to charge at any time as long as it's not at 100%? For example, I wanna start charging it while its 60% and make it to 100% or Don't charge it until battery reaches to 5 or 10 percent.

I got my first Mac last Sunday (woo!) but I was using it last night and a battery warning came up. I had been using the MBP, then turned it off and went out with battery still remaining. When I came back again a few hours later I used the Mac and after about 10 mins closed the lid for some reason. When I opened it back up it wouldn't start unless I plugged in the power outlet - the thing had completely drained. Then I checked the battery and it says to 'Service Battery'. It's now holding a charge as normal as far as I can see but the warning is still there.
A couple of other things I notice too:
- When I tilt the MBP to the right sometimes a scraping noise comes from the inside - maybe from a fan?
- When I pick it up from the bottom, the bottom of the Mac dips inwards slightly and there is a click as it makes contact with something on the inside of the case.
Are these things normal? I've made a Genius Bar reservation but I think I might just swap it for a new one.

Battery
I had a 11 inch air 1.4GHz/4GB/128GB for two weeks. I usually set the brightness to 75% and for consistent web browsing (no heavy flash) I can get about 5h15min battery life. I noticed someone here claiming 8+ hours battery on 13 inch so I decided to give it a shot.
I got a new 13 air with 1.86GHz/4GB/128GB yesterday and start to run on battery immediately. I was disappointed. The brightness was also set to 75% and I start to count the time from 25% while browsing MacRumors.com. And it only took 1h38m for battery descending from 25% to 0%. Again, pure web browsing and no heavy flash.
So here is my conclusion: On 75% brightness, 11 inch air's battery performs beyond advertised 5 hours and 13 inch's battery performs fair and normally should give you around 6h30m~7h.
Noise
I don't have equipments for measuring the noise, but while copying the same 10GB files from external drive to the machine, the fan noise from 13 inch is much louder than 11 inch.
Now I like my 11 inch more in general, although I really hate the 1366 x 768 screen. I don't know if I should sell the 13 inch or 11inch...
[edit]:
On my 11 inch air: battery capacity 4664
On my 13 inch air: battery capacity 6634
[edit2]:
I will do another test to see how long exactly my 13 inch can last after a full charge

Currently have a 2008 15 inch MBP attached to a 30 inch ACD.
Am going to buy a new 15 inch MPB and use that with the 30 inch ACD.
Am going to pass on my 2008 15 inch MBP to a colleague, but she doesn't want to use a 30 inch screen.
Can I buy a 24 inch LCD and connect it to a 2008 15 inch MBP, or are the two incompatible?

i just ordered a late 2008 macbook pro 15 with the dual GPUs (9400m and 9600m GT) and I'm a little worried about the battery life.
-What can I expect if just doing normal every day stuff (web surfing mostly?)
-does watching a movie off of the hard disk use less battery than watching it off a DVD? Is there a big difference?
I'm not a big gamer but would like to have the horsepower to play a game should one come out that I want. I'm also not a big traveler so battery times are only of average importance.
Basically, I'm asking if I made a good purchase considering I have only average concerns for both battery and game performance. They had the new 7 hour battery 15" macbook pro for the same price but it doesn't have the dual GPUs.

OSX Lion 10.7.4 Time Machine recently started randomly failing, so I swapped out the external hard drive and failures continue. I'm wondering if its software or maybe the USB ports failing at this point.Â

My 13-inch Macbook (Late 2008) currently uses the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB graphics card, but I want to upgrade it, so that I can play games at a higher quality. Is this possible? If so, what graphics cards are compatible with my Macbook (Late 2008)?

I purchased my MBA last night and let it charge over night. This morning my battery decreased to 97% within the first 3 minutes. It is now at 87% and it's been only 10 minutes. Is this normal? I haven't done any cycling yet.

I have an old MBP (2.16 GHZ); 2 Gigs of Ram and 120 Gig hard-drive. I have used my battery a handful of times since I got it, and now when I try to run off of battery power, it says it is fully charged, but after unplugging it, it dies about 3-5 minutes later. I remove the battery after the shut down happens, press to button on the bottom and all five green lights are lit indicating it is full. I really can't afford a new battery... And it doesn't seem like it is the battery anyway.

I'm running a late 2008 Macbook Pro with OS 10.6.4. The battery life is terrible. Like, in the hour and fifteen minute range on a full charge. I've tried turning everything off, wifi, bluetooth, screen brightness down and turned off the keyboard backlights. If I have no applications running, it will sometimes estimate a maximum of about two hours, but never actually give me more than about an hour and a half--if all I'm doing is surfing the net.
About three months ago I replaced the internal drive with a Hitatchi 500gb drive of the same RPM as the original (5400rpm). That's the only major modification to the machine I've made and the battery life was already a problem from starters. Does it sound like there's something wrong with the battery, or is it more likely there's something else causing problems?

I went to turn on my Macbook Pro and discovered that the battery was dead. I press the button on the battery and the first led light was blinking. I figured that the last time I had used it that I had forgotten to turn it off and it went to sleep and drained the battery. It had also been a while since I last used it so I guess it died and just needed a charge. I plugged it in and left it charging for a few hours. When I finally booted my mac and I check the power status it had Replace Now for the battery condition. The front power light on my MBP was also blinking 5 times before booting up. The system menu also states that the battery had only gone trough 60 cycles. Its been a while since I last booted my MBP up but last time I check the battery was still mark as in good condition. If the battery was completely drained could this cause the issue I am having? Or is the battery truly dead? My original battery barely lasted a year when I had to replace at my cost when the Authorized Apple Service center I went too told me that batteries were not covered by my Apple Care warranty, so now to have a second battery die on me which saw even less use then the original seems strange.

Does Apple provide replacement batteries for out of warranty early 2008 Macbooks? Just wondering as my old MacBook is giving a "replace soon" or similar message under the battery status also would it be worth the cost to replace it considering its age?

I did some google searches, but could not find anything that was exactly my issue. I have a 2008 MBP unibody. If the MBP is on battery only and I close the lid, the notebook shuts down completely. This is even when the battery is fully charged. However if while plugged in and I do the same, the computer "sleeps" as advertised. I have reset both the SMC and PRAM to no avail. The main thing that bothers me is it seems like when this happens on battery, its almost as if the computer is getting a hard shut down. The machine acts as if the battery was pulled while the lid was closed and this is obviously not good for the hardware or sofware.

When I close the lid on my MacBook Pro (Late 2008), the battery drains almost completely over a night or so! Very odd. Anyone else dealing with this? I reset the PRAM already.
