I am a new Mac user, and everytime I open a file or document a link is put on my desktop. How can I turn this off. As one user put it it is very annoying.

I tried opening this wondering if I could use it to gain access to friends laptops but when I double-clicked nothing occurred. I am wondering if this file can be used as a remote desktop file and how I could open it.

I won't open it cuz I'm afraid of what it is, lol (Windows still clogging my brain). Anyway, I can drag it to the trash and delete the trash, but after a bit, it reappears.

My internet company is crap so I need to find a way to cut out the router, which I have to reset all the time to get a normal internet speed.
Desktop is a Mac Pro bought last April, and the laptop is a 12" Powerbook G4. Both have bluetooth, airport, and the newest operating system.

I know this question sounds obvious and there are a million threads on placing folders on the dock but my need is more specific:
I want to add a folder to the dock but when I click on that folder, I simply want it to open in finder. I don't want to click the folder and then view contents in in Grid or List view, I only want the finder to open with that folder's contents. Is this possible?
I decided to try safari 3 again after I got Leopard, I like it except for one thing, some links will open in a new window that in other browsers would open in a new tab. is there any way to make Safari do this by default without having to command click on the links?

Safari crashes if I try to Cmd-click a link to get it to open in a new tab or right-click a bookmark and choose to open it in a new tab or a new window. It did not do that before I got the Safari update. I also cannot seem to get any content into more than 3 tabs without it crashing. Is there any way to fix it?

I searched for 'browser' and 'default' in my computer's help (no hits), and I searched the forum for 'apple mail' and 'firefox' with no good hits. Maybe related, but I see no way to make Firefox my default browser. I do have it set to open on startup, and safari does not open. But if I click on a link in an email, it will still open safari instead of using Firefox.

(eg Today by Smashing Pumpkins on both Siamese Dream and again on Triple J Hottest 100, Vol. 2). I know it's a little OCD, but I like having the tracks available through both albums on iTunes (depending on my mood, I'll put the album on or go for a Triple J Mix). Even so, I'd like to decrease the 4.82GB worth of duplicates somewhat. If there is a way to do this automatically, that would be great, but I doubt it. There is also, of course, the risk of deleting album releases in favour of Live recordings or vice versa to consider in this.Â

Rebooting this question to keep it simpler. Using the above, when I try to relink to files that are definitely the same type and size (WAVs or AIFFs only), the process SEEMS to work; the progress bar to confirm matching file goes through, file name disappears from the link search window and at the bottom it says (when searching for 1 file) Matched: 1 out of 1.Â
But nothing changes, still just red empty clips in Event Browser and Timeline. I've tried deleting original file references / aliases from the Original Media folder, tried linking to the new file from various older folders, tried changing the names of files, just nothing. I've trashed preferences with Preference Manager. Is this some bug they left behind in Mountain Lion because they think we should all be in Mavericks by now? I'm afraid to upgrade to 10.1.1 anyway with some older projects I still need to use - and I have other reasons to wait as well.Â
