MacBook Pro :: Is It Safe To Install An SSD With EFI 1.7
Aug 31, 2009
I have a 13" MacBook Pro, and I have refused to upgrade to EFI 1.7 (even though updater keeps telling me to upgrade) because I had heard of problems with that firmware and SSDs.

I noticed that many people who had freezing issues with their i5/i7 MBP, had gfxCardStatus installed, hence why I never installed it. Can anyone confirm that it's safe to install it and that all freezing issues are gone? ( My MPB never frozen once, but i'm afraid freezing issues will appear if I install this App

I am about to sell my Mac Pro Tower and am going to do an Erase and Install of OS X Leopard. Is the erase pretty safe in terms of deleting all my sensitive data? I mean, is it safer to do an erase first, then install?

I'm interested in Smartscroll, but I'm a little nervous to install it. I wondered how they can allow momentum scrolling in all apps, so I looked at their website and found that they used something called "APE Lite." So I searched and its something by a company called Unsanity, and this APE thingy supposedly causes tons of problems, and is strongly discouraged to install (something called a haxie ) Is it safe to install Smartscroll?

I heard earlier there are some concerns with installing Office 2008 for Mac. It seems it was something about the installer opening up a security hole. I purchased Office 2008 on release date but never installed it since I'm waiting to install it on a new MBP I'm purchasing this weekend. Is it safe to install it or some type of fix for it once installed? Are there certain procedures I should follow when installing?

The software update popped up with this update to install, along with other stuff. I unchecked the 10.6.4 update, as I have read bad things about it causing bootup problems etc. I am currently running 10.6.3. Is there a safe way to install it?

I am using a Late 2009 Mac Mini. This afternoon I did a software update, it was 4 programs that were updated. I didn't take a look at what was updated, which was a mistake, I know. But anyways, they installed fine, and the Mac rebooted, it got to just before the user select/login screen and hanged there. I was able to move the mouse around, but nothing else, and after a long period of time, I powered off my Mac, and now it is hanging at the Apple logo.
I tried booting into Safe Mode, and the grey progress bar would appear but and get half way through and then disappear. Next I tried inserting the Install DVD, hold down C while it was booting up but that wouldn't do anything.

It's the old story about buying a 2nd hand mac and forgetting to ask about a password. When I try to boot up from the OS cd my ibook goes into kernal panic. When I insert the cd and try to re install from it asks for the password. Is there a safe way to erase my OS and install afresh? Also Disk Utility keeps quitting, safari won't open. Is my ibook dying?

Usually MacBooks come with Hitachi drives, and I'm wondering if it's possible to install a hard drive onto a MacBook Pro (2.4ghz Unibody) that isn't a Hitachi. (Western Digital, ...)
Would there be driver problems (Heating up, ...) and also the hard drive free-falling locking feature be disabled?

Since the Secrets preference pane and TinkerTool programs both unearth many of the same hidden OSX settings, is it safe to install both on the same system? There are some configurable settings unique to both, so it would be beneficial to have both. However, I wonder, would there be any conflict: for example, if you choose to display hidden/system files in TinkerTool, but forget to also enable that setting in Secrets, what would happen?

I recently purchased a sort of beat up 1.5GHz 12" PowerBook G4, top of the line, and it arrived today. It boots up normally when the apple appears, then it shows the blue screen and then the mouse turns into a spinning wheel. Also, when I move the cursor, a second cursor from the same spot stays in the top-left corner. The PowerBook will only work normally as a headless server (powers on, lid closed), unless booted in safe mode. Another issue is the screen. The seller said there were lines going up and down the screen, but it varies depending on what is displayed on the screen. If the screen is grey or in target-disk mode, they do not appear, but on the 10.5 standard desktop pic, it changes pattern. The lines can be seen here: [URL]

Just upgraded my MBP from one of the first unibodys. The new computer is great, but the power cord? Surely that was one giant leap backwards? Yeah it looks cool, but I have nearly destroyed my new MBP many times - that old panicy, heart in mouth feeling when you trip over the power cord and turn round to see you computer sliding towards the edge of the table is back! With the cord parallel to the body rather than perpendicular it doesn't seem to have the leverage to pop out easy any more. Admittedly I am clumsier than most, but then thats why I loved the old magsafe so much. It makes me wornder, am I just using it wrong or does anybody else wish for simpler times?

Is it possible and safe to use the MBP 15 without the battery? I know you can a Windows laptop. I have the MBP 13 which I use for portability. The 15 in just stay stationary. All I am doing is just cycling the battery over and over and using up it's life. I didn't want to try it without advice.

I ask because the voltage is higher (16.5v vs 14.5v). I would assume the 60watt would charge faster, but not sure if the voltage increase will do damage.

I just bought a used macbook pro, 15" 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, and I have previously been using a 13" macbook, on which I recently upgraded the hard drive. I'd like to pop that hard drive in my new MBP, since it is bigger, and has all my data on it, but I'm not sure if this is a safe thing to do - if there are hardware specific aspects of the OSX environment that will be unhappy in a new machine. I'm running OSX 10.6.4..

2.0ghz Alu Macbook a few days ago and everything works perfectly well, the thing is that after day one the magsafe started to emit a low pitched electrical whistling noise. It tends to be there a few minutes after booting into the OS and then it turns down to almost unhearable, but I experienced it returning after a few hours of use and then disappearing again. If I move close to the escape key I can hear a crackling noise emitting from the magsafe.I'm not trying to be overly nitpicky or anything but I read somewhere that if it's doing that it would be a faulty Mag-Safe board or something.

I've had my Macbook for 3 years, each year I have to buy a new mag safe power adapter. I'm not some extreme user, the connection between the coupling and the cord is incredibly poorly designed. I had a PowerPC powerbook 12" before and never had a failure. My computer (and mag safe) goes to the lab and back home and that's it. Do these plugs have a warranty? I'm on my third one and it is starting to fail the same way (where the cord meets the magnetic plug at the computer). At least time it's less than a year old, if there is a warranty.
