My hard drive is running out of disk space and I am in need to delete my email that is stored (178 GB!!!!) How do I go about deleting the mail off the hard drive without deleting the mail off the servers?

I have 128 GB HDD and many emails syncing by Gmail IMAP. Thousands of emails are stored on my HDD and most of them I will never use in the future. Despite this I'd like to keep them in gmail server, just for case...
I was trying to reduce size of my Mail.app for very long time and nothing works correctly.
Ideal situation would be something like this:
E-mails older than 2 months will automatically delete from Mail.app but not from server. Or it doesn't have to be automatic, but I have to keep them on gmail.com. I'm not sure if it is possible with IMAP.
I deleted my emails and when I went into trash they'd disappeared

1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again.Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic...
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic...
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

I admin a network of Macs that use a 10.3.9 based OS X Server machine as a backup server. There is an iDisk account the server uses for iDisk backups and once a month I run a manual full back to CD. Tonight, the CD backup failed to run since the boot volume was basically full. Upon further inspection, I learned the boot volume is 6GB on a 20GB drive. So, I'm looking to possibly replace the hard drive. I'm also considering replacing the entire server with more modern hardware but that's another discussion.If I were to replace the 20GB hard drive in the server now with say a 60GB (we're talking PATA/IDE here) what would be the best way of doing it? We're talking about the boot volume now so I would need to move the OS and MBR and everything to the new drive.

I used Mackeeper to delete junkfiles from my system and to clean up my Macbook Pro but it corrupted my system.
Luckily they could repair it at Apple support and I deleted the programm. So I would not recommend it. Suddenly all my Excell files were unreadable, including my bookkeeping and my invoices. As I used it at the same time as the radio on the internet. It was extremely overprotecting my system.

Basically I just got myself the latest MacBook as an upgrade from an old laptop. With my old laptop I had no problems what so ever when using my external hard drive. To delete any files I didn't want I would just right click and press the delete option. However, when connected to my new Mac, there is no such option when right clicking on a file. I've tried dragging the file to a recycling bin but I get a message from the finder saying this file can't be deleted. I've tried moving the file out of my hard drive which worked and then deleting it which was fine but the file remained in the external hard drive as I'd only created a copy. I can't figure out how to delete files I don't want. Deleting everything on the hard drive is out of the question.

When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. Using spotlight I "accidentally" found emails that had long ago been deleted. I cannot find them using "finder" so that I may delete all of them. Nor does the email show where it resides. How is this possible? How can I find out where all these "deleted" messages are living on my hard drive?

I know this is an elementary question, but I do not want to delete all of my pictures, music, etc after I put them on my external hard drive and come to find out that I can never get them back.

I know this issue is kind of old, but there are so many flavors of it, that it is hard to find exact match. I've been having problems with single account, and it happens that this account has admin rights. Emails get pulled/deleted from user's mailbox within 10 secs after arrival. There are no other devices that may be pulling those emails, however, I've noticed something strange in the logs:

I don't know if this event is normal to run on server itself, but seems it runs only for this one account that I'm having problems with. There is no imap client setup on that server, and based on my time stamps observations I'm pretty much convinced that's what's deleting my emails.
I delete a large batch of emails from my inbox, empty the trash, and the deleted emails reappear in the inbox. This happens repeatedly. How do I get rid of these emails permanently?

I have been using it with no problems whatsoever until now. Today I fired it up and tried to delete a few files from the drive and nothing happens.
I drag the files to the trash and hit "Secure Empty Trash" from the finder menu. I hear the "crinkle" sound of the trash emptying, but when I look in the trash the files are still there...it refuses to delete the files.

When I delete an email it disapears - BUT - then it magically reappears in Mail.
When I delete emails they also do not go into the trash folders.
I am having to log on individually to all three email accounts and delete messages from their interface. Total waste of my time.
I have looked at the settings in preferences - behaviors and I have checked "Move deleted messages to the trash mailbox" I did not check "Store deleted messages" I selected permanently erase deleted messages when "one week old".

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had some trouble deleting a file off my external hard drive connected to my iMac. The file shows up on the mac side but doesn't appear when I switch over to windows. I've tried to uncheck the permissions of the locked file but it will not unlock it.
When I try to send it to the trash, a dialogue appears saying that it is a locked file but do you want to delete it anyway. Nothing happens when I hit continue to delete the file. Anyone have any suggestions to get rid of this file?
I have a Maxtor One Touch III, 320 GB. I'm trying to back up my whole MAC computer (which amounts to about...a little over 100 GB...so too big for DVD's), but it won't let me delete or add anything to the harddrive. It'll let me copy things off it, but it won't let me delete or add. How do I change the settings? I have a PC I can use it with, so I can do the settings there.
