OS X :: Deleted Emails Still Stored On Hard Drive?
Sep 12, 2010
Using spotlight I "accidentally" found emails that had long ago been deleted. I cannot find them using "finder" so that I may delete all of them. Nor does the email show where it resides. How is this possible? How can I find out where all these "deleted" messages are living on my hard drive?

I use email through a web hosting service (IMAP). If I save emails 'On My Mac' can they be accessed somewhere on my hard drive (other than through mail)? If so, where? I want to be able to backup them to a Cloud service I am using.

I started my Mac mail application today (set to connect to my gmail accounts through IMAP), and all my mail that was in my inbox is GONE. I don't know if my gmail accounts were hacked or if their implementation of "Priority Inbox" just trashed all my messages older than 35 days. I've changed my password and disabled Priority Inbox. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can recover my e-mails?

I am running Mavericks 10.9.3 on my iMac and recently had to have the Genius Bar completely reset my system due to issues with performance since the upgrade. I was primarily using Backblaze to back up my entire operating system. I am now trying to restore "Mailboxes on My Mac"in Mail. I was able to get the actual names of mailboxes back via going to my library in the back up and moving all folders to my current library, however it only restored the mailboxes themselves. There are no emails that were but should have been included.

I have both my gmail accounts set up with teh Mail app on my Macbook Pro , I went ahead and deletd a bunch of files, some that contain attachements and I emptied the trash, they appear to be gone, not really, if i restart the computer and start up Mail again and click the ALL MAIL box all the emails show up again!! and if i search a phrase or name via Spotlight all the emails show up again! I want the emails gone for good, I went into Mail Prefrerence and checked/unchecled all the necessary tabs, I also checked that I dont want messages saved offline, FYI when I check the email inbox via browser www.google.com / gmail teh emails arent there but they seem to be stored on my mac.

Well, a little about me, I'm a proficient computer user, however, in my semi-recent switch to Mac, I am going through the learning curve of the ins and outs of Mac OS X. I'm a video and audio editor and do a lot of graphic design work as well. So, I have a 320GB (~300GB usable) drive with Mac OS 10.5.8 and a whole lot of software installed. This is a production machine, so I don't want to do anything experimental with it. Hopefully someone with expertise in the area of cleaning cache and needless files will drop by this thread.
Here's the basic rundown of what's on the drive:
/Library = 62GB
/Apps = 22GB
/Users.../Library = 87GB
/Users.../Docs&Desktop&Music&Movies&Pictures = 90GB
Other = ~20GB
Free space = ~20GB
I have plenty of external drive space, so I can move a lot of the User stuff off and clear it up for now, but I just can't understand why the Libraries are so big. But this is because I don't know that much about Mac OS X. Are there any no brainer places to clean cache and unnecessary files? I have read around a bit and so I am not going to be poking around in the Libraries unless I know what I'm doing. I'm cautious because like I said, this is a production machine.

I tried to install Ubuntu (don't ask me why) onto my G5 dual core 2.5 Ghz PowerPC and after the installation not working as I had hoped (it worked fine on my netbook btw) I switched off the mac using a hard-shutdown from the power button as the whole system became completely unresponsive. I then tried to reboot and found that on my reboot rather than booting into the user screen as per usual I got the dreaded "circle with a cross through it". After fiddling about with a hell of alot of boot options I managed to get into the open firmware (option,o,f) terminal style screen up. from this screen it would seem that on my internal hard drive that pretty much all of my files are still on the hard drive. As I couldn't open them from the open firmware I was then told by a friend that I could run disk utility from the install cd provided with mac os x and I managed to find my internal hard drive using disk utility.
It seems as though during the ubuntu install I've deleted all partitions on the hard drive and therefore on the "partition" section under "current" it has no partitions set up and I have the option to set one up. It also gives me various different formating options; Mac os x Extended, Mac os x Extended (journalled), Mac os x Extended (Case sensitive journalled), Mac os x Extended (Case sensitive), unix file system and free space. I think it was originally on Mac os x Extended (journaled) but I'm not certain. Before I hit that re-partition button do u think that this is the right thing to do and if so which formatting option should I use? Presuming that the re-partitioning goes well, will I then have to re-install os x? Also will I loose all the data on the hard drive? Although I have the vast majority backed up there are still a few odd files that I wouldn't mind keeping if at all possible and obviously I didn't think to back up those hundreds of apps I've acquired over the years.
An embarrassed Dc

I was trying to do some tasks in Windows 7 in VMWare fusion and it was a little laggy, so I shut down the VM and restarted my mac. It took a little longer to restart than I'm used to, but when it came back on 99% of my main hard drive is now gone. All my bookmarks in safari, user accounts, most preferences are still here but all files are gone. How could this have happened and is there any way it can be reverted without a time machine back up? It's a mid 2010 21" iMac i3 8GB ram with Lion installed all newest updates have been done prior to this happening. I don't even know what to do, so much has been lost.

I opened up mail today to find that my entire inbox has been totally wiped. This is quite inconvenient for many reasons, but I'm not sure how to fix it. I still have the emails in my outbox, sent and drafts folder, but there is nothing to be found in my inbox. It doesn't appear as if my emails are in the trash anywhere either.I'm with telus, for what it's worth, and I'm running 10.9.2.

I have my Yahoo! eMail downloaded into my mail app. This works great and is not a problem. That is until I go to delete messages. If I delete them in the Mail app, they remain on my online inbox, and Vice Versa. I've tried hitting Sync Account in the mailbox drop-down menu but that doesn't do anything.

I spent the better part of the afternoon trying to sort out a mail sending issue with my work Macbook (10.5.8).I basically receive email from 2 accounts ( personal email account and work wmail account). Because I'm behind a proxy server at work I had to play around with the settings so that I could send emails via the work account but receive replies to my personal account. I spent a bit of time playing with the settings and trying different things. Eventually I got everything working fine, BUT in the process I decided to delete my personal account and re-configure it. Again, all went well, except for the fact that the 2K emails (collected over the past year or so) sitting in my in-box were removed as well. When I added my personal email account back in I only got emails that were currently sitting on the (pop) mail server. The previous years worth of emails dissapeared. Where do emails go when you remove an email account from osx mail? Surely they don't delete without trace? is it possible to recover those emails from a delted account?

I'm planning on making myself some icons (in particular, a volume icon with the windows flag and one with the leopard X, to differentiate between them on my desktop) and with a bit of googling, found that *most* of the system icons were in System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle although one particular icon that wasn't there was the hard disk icon that is on the desktop.
Does anybody know where this icon would be? (And any other common system ones that are not in CoreTypes.bundle)

I was playing around with Mail and trying out POP3 with hotmail. I discovered that mail downloaded ALL my emails from the last 5 years and deleted it from my hotmail webaccount. So, I tried to find the settings to prevent Mail from downloading and deleting email but couldn't. So I proceeded to delete the account from Mail. To my horror, I found that I've lost all my emails as well!!!
Is there a way to retrieve my emails? Now I can't even find the pop3 setting for free hotmail.

A while back, after closing my business I canceled my account with Intermedia where my company email accounts were hosted.
Ever since, when using Entourage with my personal email accounts, Entourage kept prompting me that it was not able to connect to my business account. I usually ignored these warnings, but a few days ago, they became so annoying, that I went into Preferences and deleted the account- without thinking.
This was the last placed that these emails were stored and I desperately need them as evidence in a lawsuit that I am currently involved in.
I have not been backing up my computer anywhere, but I know they have to be here somewhere, right?
I'm willing to pay for any recovery software or hardware that anyone recommends
