Jun 27, 2010I'm currently running a fairly small online radio operation from my iMac with Nicecast. I am using Nicecast's built-in server to stream an m3u file to peers at 128k each. Being a home user, my upload bandwidth is relatively narrow, and I face severe instability, lag, buffering, and disconnection issues when I get to a certain number of peers.
What I want to do is stream one m3u file to a web player which anyone could connect do without connecting directly to my system. That way I would only need to stream to one peer (that being the player) and therefore would have no bandwidth issues to worry about.

Apr 13, 2009I have a mac mini running leopard server that is gong to be replacing an ubuntu server machine that sits in my closet. the ubuntu machine is great because i can configure avahi to broadcast itself as an xserve and it shows up in finder as a server. i have no idea how to change the broadcasted system type in osx though. sure it's a little gimmicky, but i suppose i just enjoy seeing the little xserve icon in my sidebar.
i know that the icons are located in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/ and i could just rename the xserve icon to the macmini icon, but then every mac mini on my network would show up as an xserve.

It seems the best alternative on mac is nicecast which i use frequently.
It would be nice to find a mac host (like shoutcast) so people could connect in without me sending them a url.
Hardware :: OS X Driver For Lite-On DVD And RW?
Oct 15, 2003Recently bought Lite-On DVD+RW. Having few teething probs though. Toast is fine for burning but cannot burn from desktop. Also, Toast will not succesfully erase my DVD+RW disk, says it has but then if I ask it to burn, it says "Cannot burn this disk do you want to erase" or something like.
Has anyone got or can anyone make a driver for OS X?
I had the same problem last time with my Lite-On CDRW and got a driver someone had made and posted on another board, whis made it work with itunes, finder etc.

So I searched and its something by a company called Unsanity, and this APE thingy supposedly causes tons of problems, and is strongly discouraged to install (something called a haxie ) Is it safe to install Smartscroll?

Feb 17, 2010I am sharing a laptop with my gf running Leopard. Her login is fine. On my login all three of my browsers (Safari, Firefox, Chrome) only go to lite versions of websites. Lite.Facebook.Com, Espn.go.com.
Obviously this is something at the login level where my login is reporting that I am a mobile device not a full computer. I am at work now so I don't have my machine to check or give specs on. I was hoping someone could give me a quick fix for this.

Mar 5, 2009I have a server setup with Quicktime Streaming Server. I have installed Quicktime Broadcaster/Quicktime Player on my MacBook. My problem is that I am only able to broadcast as the root user. Also I can only receive a broadcast via Quicktime Player 7.6 as the root user. Is the firewall blocking the rtsp protocol? I am completely stuck and befuddled.

MacBook :: Internet Says Have Internet But Wont Connect - Cannot Open System Preferences Or Internet Preferences
May 10, 2009I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
MacBook Pro :: Unable To Connect To Internet Via Ethernet Or Wi-fi / Internet Connects In Safe-mode
Jan 1, 2010I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. Thanks for the help everyone.

Apr 28, 2012I have a macbook pro and have recently noticed that when initially loading any of, google chrome, firefox or safari it takes a very long time for the internet to load the webpages.
It says that there is a full wireless connection but will not load the webpage.
Once the webpage has finally loaded after about a minute, subsequent browsing is as fast as can be expected upon my broadband connection, loading pages in <1s.
However the problem reappears whenever I open a new window, or anything else that might use the internet such as the app store, itunes or apple software update.Â

May 22, 2012For specific reasons, I needed to connect my Synology DS211 NAS to my iMac directly via its ethernet port. I discovered that if I share my wireless internet connection (coming from my cable modem/wireless router) from wireless to ethernet, then the NAS would get the IP stuff it needed to show up. did that, voila, NAS is acting like a glorified external hard drive. BUT, when I did that, I lost all internet connectivity on my iMac. Still have full wireless signal. preferences pane says I'm fully connected to my network with an IP address, but safari always fails to pull up any webpages, saying I'm not connected to the internet.As soon as turn off the ethernet PORT, it all starts working again. And to make it even crazier, I discovered that if I leave sharing my wireless internet via my ethernet port ON, but turn off the ethernet port (in pref pane), I can STILL access the NAS just like before. That makes no sense - I'm sharing my internet via a port I have turned off, but it works? Anyway, why would Iose my airport wireless internet connection when the ethernet port is on - configured manually?

May 29, 2012currently I connect to the internet by doing this: Go to System Preferences / Network. Then I select my internet provider name on the left pane and finally click on the Connect button. That's all. This internet profile has a PPoE service name, an account name and a password. My internet connection uses a cable DLink router (it's not wireless).Â
Question:Â
1) Does the password I mentioned above mean that my neighbors can't access my internet, or are they able to do that and, in this case, I need to set another password somewhere else?Â

Once, after installing windows, the same problem occurred. Aug 24, 2010so I just got my macbook fixed at the apple store about 2 days ago and the first day I used it the internet was working fine. But now whenever I try to open Mozilla or Google chrome it says I can't connect, and on google chrome it says "Error 105". I tried restarting my router but that's not the problem because my parents laptop works just fine.

It recognized my family's DSL wireless network, but would not let me into it without a password. We never gave our router a password/encryption. Does anybody have any idea about what I should do? Dec 5, 2009I just moved to a new place and hooked up comcast internet. The place already had cable, we just hooked up the internet in addition. However, I can't get my macbook online!
2 hours on the phone, 2 different cable modems (one comcast and now a new linksys cm100) and a service call later and still nothing!
Here's the thing. It HAS to be my computer.
The service guy was able to connect to the internet both directly connected to the cable modem itself, and then again through (direct line, not wireless) through my time capsule as well, no problem!
I can't connect at all though! Before they came out or after. Nada, nothing.
I am on a C2D SR macbook running 10.6.2
I can get on the wireless at my parents house, (comcast) the next door neighbors, (comcast) my boyfriends, and directly connect to the internet here as well (I think, last week when I tried anyway)
What in the world could be wrong?
I can't connect wirelessly via my timecapsule through that connection either, but i don't care so much, as long as I can direct connect somehow.
MacBook Pro :: The Internet Is Lagging?
Apr 19, 2010I just got my 13 inch MBP a few hours ago. It's lovely and brand new... but the internet is lagging. It's not my connection - no problems with the other computers in the house.Basically, about one in five links takes 30 seconds to a minute to load. And hulu plays for 30 seconds, then buffers (rinse and repeat). It took an hour and a half to watch a 30 minute show. I've tried firefox, safari, and chrome - it does the same thing in all the browsers.Suggestions? I've obviously restarted and tweaked whatever I can think of.
