what is wrong with my 15-inch macbook pro, the only thing i did was installing 8 gb RAM, and suddenly out of nowhere my mac freezes and shows red bars and the white light is flashing while and alarm beeps

So I just got my MacBook, mainly for school. The wireless service at my school requires a username and password so I went to the place and paid the 10 bucks for it. They said when you open up "Internet Explorer" (I chuckled) that a window would come up asking for your permission to continue or whatever and then you have to put in your username and password. When I join the network in Airport it says I have full bars however when I open up Safari or Firfox it instantly says that I'm not connected. What can I do so that it will ask me for my username and password so I can actually use the internet? I have gotten to the page where it asks me for my username and password before but I hadn't yet set up an account so I just exited out. Now I can't even get to that page! Hopefully there are some people out there that use the same type of wireless service at their college...

I have full bars most of the time at school but about 50% of the time there is no connection. On mozilla i get an error to contact the server administrator and i just get a no network on safari. I installed windows 7 and there is also full bars but no connection. My friends, who have PCs, connect fine. There s a dell netbook and a 50lbs Toshiba laptop.

I am using a August 2007 black macbook with airport extreme using 10.4.11 I am using a neighbors wireless network that is WPA. I live in Senegal and my computer is American, and I have heard that this might cause problems because of hardware. But the wifi connection works, it just bounces from full bars to no bars, spends a lot of time at 1 bar, and then when the connection drops and I try to rejoin the network, it says that there was an error. Sometimes, the network won't even show up. After long stretches of time trying to rejoin the network only to find an error, it will suddenly work. I have tried using interference robustness and relocating my computer. The router is just one floor above me, and when it was being installed (before they applied the pw) I had full bars. I think this is a mac problem because my host sister's PC does not seem to be experiencing problems. Also, due to the nature of the wifi (it belongs to my moroccan neighbors).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the white macbook and I got it a little less than a year ago. For the past week, sometimes when I go on the internet (firefox or safari) it just won't load. Like the blue bar that shows you how much has loaded isn't even visible and it will just say "connecting". But when I look at my airport icon that shows me how many bars of internet I have all the bars are full so I have internet connection. It is not just one type of internet browser because it does it on both safari and firefox. And it is getting really annoying because I will be browsing the internet and it just won't load or connect at all. Even if I wait.

My macbook is a 2009 model running 10.6.4, using a linksys router, signal will drop for no reason. The bars are full, but nothing will connect. NO messenger, web browser, or downloading software will work, like its dead. This usually happens if I keep my computer on over night for huge downloads (1GB+).To fix this, I just have to click on the airport icon on the top right corner of my screen, choose disconnect, wait 3 seconds, then choose reconnect and it will work again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my old PowerBook pro running tiger my network was running fine and fast using my Airport extreme. But I just purchased a MacBook Pro and started up on 10.5.6 and the airport if constantly scanning even though it has full bars on my home airport. I have tried the following one at a time and together without success:
- Changed the channel away from the neighbors
- Changed to g only instead of b/g radio mode (older airport)
- Increased the mbps rate
- Interference robustness
- Closed network
The only way the scanning stops and then only temporarily is by clicking on the airport drop down on the menu bar.
This problem has been going on for a couple of months now. I use my macbook at 2 places: school and home. At school, when I click the school network under airport, it connects and shows the full bars. But when I open safari/firefox, the page won't load and I get the error message when you're not connected. However, sometimes after like an hour of persisting and retrying, it will be able to access the internet for a little bit for like an hour or so maybe, and then it'll stop working. At home, it's the same thing. It will connect to my home network (got wireless at home set up through my desktop PC), and show the full connection on airport, but it won't access the internet for the life of me. The difference is I can never gt it to connect unlike at school where it sometimes works, except that it worked for like one day out of the last 2 months (and I didn't change any settings then so it's not like I can attribute it to that). Also, I am absolutely positive that the networks of my home/school computer and the router settings etc. aren't to blame. Reason is that my friends with macbooks can access the internet both using my home network and the school network (the school one is obvious). What could possibly be going wrong? Any settings on my macbook that I can change / completely reset? Is the network card or something messed up? I'm contemplating just completely formatting my laptop to see if it fixes the issue. I have leopard installed btw.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm back at my dad's place for the summer and I'm trying to connect to his house's wireless connection on my MacBook. It seems to connect okay when I type in our 10-digit password next to "WEP 40/128-bit hex" in the drop-down menu, but then even with full signal bars, it loads browser pages very slowly if ever, usually just giving me a timeout error and it's the same thing across all programs, my instant messenger takes forever to connect, WoW takes forever to connect, if ever, basically the internet I get from this connection is useless. It's odd because both my sisters have MacBooks and the internet works fine for them at my dad's house when they connect, and MY internet on my computer works perfectly when I'm using any WiFi but this one. By the way, the transmitter is a "D-Link 514 2.4GHz Wireless Router" and we're connected to cable internet.

* I have tried resetting the router and that didn't help.
* I have tried changing the channel, authentication method and password and that didn't help.
* I tried a DNS troubleshooting guide and it doesn't appear to be a problem with that.

I have had my Laptop for over 3 years now and with really no significant problems. A couple of days ago though, my laptop display got 3 vertical black/white/black bars on the right third of the screen and I am just curious if it is dying. I am connected to an external display and it's been awhile like this, but it makes it impossible to use as a laptop anymore.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOn my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back.The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.
I just came inside after being outside for about 6 hours. When I opened my shell, there was no screen light-up, no keyboard lights, etc. I had already plugged into my power adapter and external hard drives (just as I always do). I punched keys, tried to use the trackpad - nothing. So I hit the power button for a few seconds. My screen came up seriously grayed out with 'indicator bars' (such as the ones that control brightness, sort of, but larger) at the bottom of my screen. Once they al went on, from left to right, my computer was awakened from it's normal sleep mode.Â

Have had this macbook for just over a week, purchased off original owner who bought in Feb this year with Applecare warranty. Upgraded ram immediately to a G.Skill 4Gb kit. 4 days ago, computer randomly froze with horizontal coloured bar. Called Apple next day, the guy there told me that sometimes this happens, and that I should only be worried if this occurs ago. 4 days later, we are at this present scenario: In the last hour or so, has crashed 3 times. Programs running in common were iTunes and Safari.

They go away after a few minutes or if they appear on the desktop, a simple killall Finder command clears them away. Sometimes they appear on apps and will minimize/maximize with them. They also appear on the menubar quite frequently. I have restarted many times, but eventually they always come back. This has been happening since at least 10.5.2 has anyone ever experienced this or know what is causing it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedOk, I've noticed this week that my 2010 13" MBP hangs a lot when it plays any videos I've bought off of itunes (it's fine with other videos). I mean anytime a itunes video pops up on my itunes player, the whole computer hangs (beachball of death and can't do anything). And it hangs for quite a bit (haven't timed it but a minute maybe?)
At first I thought it was the graphics card as the first time I realized what was causing my computer to randomly freeze up (it's been starting to do that this week but at first wasn't sure what cause itunes was in the background) it gave the wierd color bars on the video screen for the video it was playing (I have itunes play the video in the small box on the left bottom corner). Like the whole video screen was random fubar color bars and not the video (it took a minute and then eventually played fine after me reclicking the video). It has not done that since.
I played around with it and noticed it seems fine when I play videos I have not bought off of itunes but it reliabley hangs the whole computer when I try to play a video bought off of itunes. It eventually plays but it is really annoying particularly cause it holds up my whole computer until it resolves whatever issue it is.
So, hardware or software and any suggestions if it is software on how to fix it?
I'm using a MacBook Pro which was bought in 2007 and running the old OS X (i.e. the one before Leopard just because I've been lazy and haven't upgraded). My MacBook Pro has recently (as in the last few days) started freezing up. I'll be using it normally and all of a sudden it will just freeze and these strange shaded vertical bars appear across the screen. I then hold down the power button and reset it only to get a screen saying, "You need to restart your computer etc." I then restart the system and normally get this screen again a few times (infuriating) or I boot it in safe mode holding down the 'shift' key. I've run 'verify disk' as well as 'repair disk permissions'. I've also got a mate to check it and load it into Mac's version of 'DOS' and rebook it from there. He said he doesn't understand why I'm having any problems.
I've got a heap of disk space so it should be that. It was working fine all yesterday, and just again today has thrown in the towel on me again. Basically, does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? I'm not putting it under any stress (i.e. demanding programs) and the freezing has been randomly occurring when I'm web browsing/watching YouTube or using Excel/Word. Should I backup my music, photos and essential documents and just wipe the thing clean and start over? I don't really want to do this as will mean I have the expense of getting an external hard drive and all that. I haven't changed anything or downloaded any programs recently that I can think would be causing these problems.
When I turn on my iMac the apple logo appears behind what looks like jail bars then a dark shade rolls down the screen then tiny squares appear all over screen with error message to restart if it fails to restart manually, which it does. Cannot get past this point.Tried command R to no avail.

It gets a bit annoying, I open it from the center top of the screen, not by the side. Is this a problem that I should be taking to the Apple Store? Or this can be fixed easily?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I have my brightness at a certain setting and then start playing a game, the brightness jumps to full. When I then press the button for less brightness, it jumps immediately to the setting it was originally.
This also happens whenever I do alt+tab to return to the desktop. So it appears it happens when I do something that requires to switch to full screen mode cause it also happens with other programs.
At normal use, surfing, office,... this problem does not occur. And also it doesn't happen under OS X
So I have a DYNEX 21 inch HD TV conected up to my MBP via the VGA connection route. My problem is that when I want a program (or more specifically in this case a game) to go into fullscreen mode it automatically goes to my primary monitor and turns the other screen black. I know I can switch the primary monitor from my actual laptop screen to the TV however I just want the game to be full screen on the TV while still having access to my dock and everything on my laptop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro 15" with a mini displayport, and I decided I would share my LCD monitor with my windows box. The desktop box is connected with DVI and I have connected my Macbook through an HDMI adaptor from Moshi. Everything works very well, and I'm pleased with the quality of the output, but I'm having trouble with a screen flicker in full screen games.
When I select full 1080p (1900x1080) in any full screen game, the screen "shudders." It does not occur on the OS X desktop, and I can only explain it as a shudder. Lines and text shift perceptively left and right, and the game is unplayable. I have experienced this problem in Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, and Half Life: Episode 2 so far.
Could the problem be with my monitor and the way it handles an HDMI signal? The Macbook is flawless otherwise, with no other issues of any kind. The "shudder" only occurs during full screen games set to 1900x1080. Lower resolutions are not effected and work fine...
I'm stumped.
Edit: I should add that I have no other 1080p capable devices to test the output with.
I recently had to erase and install Leopard. I then restored everything from my time-machine backup. The weird thing is, before, when watching streaming videos from the internet, the screen stayed at the same brightness, regardless of whether there was any mouse movement, or touching the keyboard, or anything. Now, if I don't do anything, the computer dims the screen, as if i wasn't watching a video.

My Mac does not give me the option of selecting the screen resolution that the Dell monitor says it has (1920x1080). It only allows for 1600x900 at max. This has the effect of the screen not stretching to the full size of the screen.
