MacBook Pro :: Flawlessly Migrating All Stuff At First Boot?
Apr 22, 2010
I'm moving from my old Intel Macbook Pro to a new Intel Macbook Pro. I've read a lot of the migration threads out there, but couldn't find any definite answer as to whether use Migration Assistant or just reinstall all apps and manually move all documents. My main concern is this: Will Migration Assistant work flawlessly for migrating everything at first boot? Is there an advantage to clean install everything on a Mac like there is on a PC?

Looking to replace the 5400rpm drive with a new 7200rpm drive, but what is the best way to move all my stuff over? Should I clone the drive or is it better to do a fresh install and go through the hassle of reinstalling all my stuff?

Does google docs work flawlessly on a macbook air? I would have about 5 tabs of it open in safari, be listening to music on iTunes, and probably have one or two microsoft office apps open. Would it run well, on both the 1.6 HHD and the 1.8 SSD? For my class we use a lot of google docs, and I heard that the Macbook air has some flash problems, so I need to know before I buy one.

Today I was running iTunes, editing play lists, syncing them to one of 4 iPods registered to this iMac/iTunes version. 6 hours later, iMac still in same configuration, I left the desk and my son began using iMac choosing a different song on iTunes, logged on Firefox and connected his iPod (one of the 4 registered). The iTunes application froze. He called me and after seeing it crashed, I right clicked on the iTunes dock icon and force quit the application. I restarted the iMac and after it rebooted I clicked the iTunes icon and iTunes opened without our music libraries, just as it was when I ran iTunes the first time when the iMac was brand new. The top banner says, "iTunes1".

Is it bad for Macs to leave them on a long time when you're not using it?
My nephew once told me he puts his PC off when he goes to school for example, because it would be better for his pc.
Does this count for...
- My PowerBook, running on cable (not battery, whatever)?
- My (to buy) 24'' iMac?
Reason is I sometimes want to leave my stuff on to upload or download stuff...

I have a MacBook with 10.5 that my wife and I share. I finally got her her own MacBook, and I'd like to move just her account to the new computer. It's a MacBook, not a MacBook Pro, so FireWire's not an option, but I have an ethernet cable. I haven't taken the new computer out of the box yet. What's the best way to go about doing this?

I've followed the steps to migrate the info from my work mac to my MacBook, but have copied over absolutely everything. It has meant that my original address book is now blank and I am unsure what other programs may have been affected. I am unsure whether to migrate the information back to the work mac and clean up the macbook and start again. Can someone advise me - but in layman's terms as I do not understand technical words!

So I just got the 'last gen' MacBook Pro - 17in and seemingly successfully migrated my old iMac G5 over using the Time Machine and Migration Assistant. Only problem is none of my photos or iTunes transferred over. Also it keeps telling me my registration number is wrong on FCE, even though I've entered it correctly...

One of these days, I may purchase a Crucial SSD (512GB).
I need to know how to copy the contents of my current factory HDD (seagate 5400rpm 500GB) to the Crucial SSD. Note that they are of different sizes.
What I have:
- Carbon Copy Cleaner
- Time Machine (with time capsule)
- Spare 750GB external HDD
Which is the fastest, safest, and easiest way to accomplish this task? Again, the drives are of different sizes, and only one can be in the machine at a time.
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 13", 500GB HDD, 16GB RAM, i7 2.7GHz

Finally making the transition from PPC to C2Duo
Ordered by MBP 17" 2.8GHz over the weekend, should be here on Tuesday..
A couple of concerns:
1. Keeping in view its a transition from PPC to Intel, what would you guys advise as "the best way for transferring stuff from my PB to the new MBP"?
Time Machine Backup / Drag n Drop / ???
2. Over 90% of my applications are Universal Binaries meaning the installation should work fine on the MBP.. ?? Any case studies.. I am more worried about my CS4 Apps, installed brushes, filters, preferences etc.
3. Any other tips/best practices to help in this transition will be much appreciated..

Bought a brand new MacBook Pro and transferred all my files from my PC to my Mac using Migration Assistant. When complete, log in says that my password has expired and asks me to put in my old password and a new one. I don't remember ever creating one. I tried using the password that is set up for my PC but doesn't work at all. I am completely lost on what I should do next.

I have a new MacBook Pro and need to move my data from my old MacBook Pro to the new one.
I will keep using the old one but want to move all the data, except my Aperture/iPhoto library - can I do this?
Also, what is the best way to move the data - via a Time Machine back up or a cable?

My 2007 MBP won't boot up, or at least the screen won't turn on. The genius diagnosed it as an issue with the logic board. I'm not quite two months out of warranty, so it's $310 to fix -- but I spilled water on it three years ago, and if damage is detected, my repair options start to get pretty pricey. I'm now the proud owner of the base-model 13" MBP, which is great, though it hasn't been 24 hours yet. I'm still planning to send the old MBP out to attempt the $310 repair, and we'll keep it as a backup if they'll fix it. However, I'd really like to get my data off the hard drive before I ship it out. I keep hoping it will magically boot up -- it's come back to life a couple of times since I started having this problem -- but I can't expect it to.
What is the easiest way to get my info off the hard drive so I can load everything onto my new MBP? I don't want to do anything more that would give Apple reason to say they can't do the repair. I know I should've backed up, but I didn't, and I can assure you I've learned my lesson ... the hard way.

all these languages and stuff that takes up so much room that is unneeded. How do you delete these things to free up some space. Is this a major ordeal or just a quick file delete kind of thing.

I've not yet decided on iWork or Office Mac... is iWork now fully compatible with Office? If it is I'm gonna download the trial version ASAP. But beyond that what else should I be looking for? My brain has gone dead after all the file transfers, so I've literally just installed MSN Messenger, Football Manager and VLC player + codecs. Do I need any antivirus software as well?

i have a macbook 2.0 unibody. i just bought 500Gb internal hard drive and i want to replace the stock 160Gb with it. how do i move all my stuff from my old drive to the new one? i don't have the cash to buy an external hard drive just so i can move my stuff back and forth, i will have no need for an external right now since i have a 500Gb internal. someone told me to get an HDD caddy and use the stock drive as an external. what i am wondering is, will i be able to transfer all my applications without having the install files (i deleted all my install files as soon as i installed them). is it going to be a simple "drag and drop" kind of deal and every file knows exactly where to go? i just don't know what complications might come about.

Here is what I have: Macbook Pro - utilizing around 80GB of HDD. I have a large iTunes library, a small amount of Word and Excel files, very few applications (VLC, Microsoft Office, Transmission, Toast, etc.), and a large iPhoto library. I have everything backed up on a Western Digital external hard drive using Time Machine. Over the past two years, I have accumulated a lot of files and extensions that I don't need or want. I am soon going to trade for either a 15-inch MBP or an iMac. Rather than restore everything on the new machine using my Time Machine back up, I just want to start with a brand new computer. How do I get single applications from my external hard drive to the new computer? For example, I want MS Office on the new one. How do I get it over without reinstalling with the disc?

When I click on a link to download, the page loads for a second and then gets stuck on a grey screen and the download window doesn't open. My MacBook HDD crashed and I just had some questions. This is still in the middle of the quarter and thankfully my midterms are already over so I'm free till finals, besides papers. The problem is I was walking around my apartment and tripped over my chair, which caused the macbook to fall and the hdd to fail. I took it over to the bookstore for them to check it out and they said they could see the hdd but not the partition. I'm not exactly sure what this means but I need 3-5 folders out of my documents folder and the entirety of my pictures folder (completely forgot to back it up). I also needs my bookmarks from firefox and calendar/mail stuff (not sure if that's possible) What are the chances of this happening? I'm giving my mac to a buddy of mine who has a good friend that's a genius at the apple store in OC. I'm just wondering if I can get my information back... or I'm screwed for finals pretty much? On a side note I did order a new MBP so I guess I'll have half the quarter's notes.

I was wondering if theres a way to see what exactly is on your hard drive? I want to see what exactly is taking up the "used space" on my hard drive. To be more detailed, I want to see if anything I never downloaded or installed is on my hard drive. Like spyware etc., that maybe taking extra space.

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro from my very Old MacBook, but it was running latest version of Snow leopard. I first tried the set up assistant to transfer all my Information from Time Machine Back up to New MacBook pro. This seemed to work fine except Mail.
Mail launches says that it is transferring my e-mails (11,000+) this runs OK, then it says that I am going to be upgraded and the little box says "Migrating data", this just runs and runs and basically nothing happens and I can't run Mail.
My iCloud is configured and this is all working from the web, also it is working fine on my iPhone 4s. I have also tried creating a Test account deleting the origional transferred account (my old Computer) then instead of using the Wizard I used the Migration assistant. This has basically done the same as the above.
