I have a 13" mid-2009 macbook pro that freezes ALL the time. No spinning ball, just completely freezes. It seemed to have started after I installed Lion. I took to the Apple store once and they reinstalled Lion, but it has not helped at all.
View 14 RepliesSince the 10.5.8 update my Macbook wont wake from sleep (black screen) and i have restart it with the power button. The Macbook is totally frozen: the keyboard doesnt respond (caps button light wont go on and etc.) and my external monitor wont come on either.What I've tried:
-Install combo update 10.5.8 (i did normal update first time)
-Started up with all the magic keys combos (PRAM and SCM or whatever)
-Tried the fix where you need to (re)enable the ethernet port
-Set sleephibernate mode to 0
- Repaired permissions and disk aid etc.
Would a Macbook Pros Graphics Card Support two monitors? If so what kind?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm all out of possibilities, as far as I can think.I wound up with a Macbook Pro 2ghz Core Duo, and while I knowit's old as hell, I'd like to get it in proper working order, as I feel it still has a lot of life in it if I can get it to stop freezing.It freezes without rhyme or reason, there's no specific application, action, etc that the issue is confined to. It's anything at any time.
I've tried replacing the hard drive, there's an issue with the dvd drive so I just cloned the startup drive, I've repaired permissions, used 3rd party programs to wipe caches, verify and repair the hdd, even wipe and restore system and application settings. I just put new ram in it as well. I'm considering purchasing a new superdrive or external optical drive just to be able to run the hardware test or try a fresh install, but I hoped to obtain some insight prior to spending more money than I already have put into it. I've really put a lot of time into this, and as much as I'd like to take the ultimate solution and just buy a new mbp, that's not an option at the moment.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having my MacBook Pro freeze up on me after sleeping for around 20-30 minutes or longer. I open the lid, and it looks fine, then as soon as I try and do something I get the spinning beach ball of death. Then, I click something else, and it instantly gets the beach ball. Eventually I try the dock, which comes up, but then freezes and hangs as well, partially expanded.
Control+Option+Delete does nothing. Nothing at all. Not a single button does anything, the only thing that is responsive at any level is the mouse (now a beach ball), and it only moves. And that's it.
I have no peripherals hooked up, nor is my Safe Sleep mode activated (mode=0).
I have tested Netflix in Safari, Firefox and Chrome. All versions are updated, as well as my mac. My MacBook Pro is less than a year old.
Every time I just go to Netflix.com, it freezes my laptop, and I have to hold down the power button to shutdown.
I have also deleted the Microsoft Silverlight plugin, and reinstalled it with no luck.
I can't figure out why my MPB frezzes up all the time. It's currently running worse then my Win XP. I counldn't even finish this thread before it frooze up again. I tried to run a disk check, that also made it frezze. The only way i can get it to life again is a hard reset.

I am on Tiger 10.4.11 on Mac Book Pro Intel duo. All updates except for Parallels installed. Have run permissions repairs and preferential treatment. Tried to delete preferences for system ... Every time I try to uncheck the box marked or open the Date and Time preferences, it freezes and have to force quit.
I use a mini display port to HDMI to get the video and i use audio Y cable splitter for the audio.i can get video but not sound. If i disconnect the HDMI cable from the T.V. then i can get sound. If the HDMI cable and the audio cables are connected at the same time i can get video but no sound. I called Sony and according to them there is no setting on the T.V. that would help. My theory is that it's some kind of setting in the imac that prevents it from sending audio and video to the tv at the same time. Unfortunately i have not been able to figure it out.

whenever i try to remove something like growl or hyperdock from the other section of the system preferences pane, system preferences freezes. it has done this since whenever i first installed snow leopard on my computer. is this a snow leopard bug that apple has never fixed or should i try a system restore from the 10.6 disks.

Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.

I have a PPC mac mini with Leopard installed. The last software update was in approximately April. I went into iTunes and was prompted that there was a later version. I went into the Apple Software Updater, but it hangs about a third of the way through the process. I can 'cancel' the update, i.e. not beach ball, but it won't finish and display the list of items to update. I searched the forum and one suggestion was to delete the contents of the Library/Updates folder. This has not resolved the issue. How long can an update search take? I am waiting ~20 minutes, which is much longer than I have had to wait in the past.

I have a mid-2008 (June) MBP 15". Just upgraded to SL last night. I am having a serious issue with time machine. I've been using it with the same external HD since I bought my mac last year. No issues up until I installed SL last night. This morning (my first backup since upgrading), time machine started backing up (~ 9Gb) but just stops at around 300Mb. The clock keeps spinning, but there is no change in the amount backed up.
I'm reading that other folks are having this issue as well. Has anyone figured something out? I've run disk repair (nothing found), restarted my mac & external HD (several times each), and cancelled and restarted the time machine backup (several times). Each time it freezes at a different amount (i.e. 34Mb, 284.2Mb, etc...).
Ever since I upgraded to Lion my iMac freezes or nearly freezes for 5 - 10 minutes every hour while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do? I have tried everything I can think of but its only improved from total freeze while Time Machine backs up to freeze with an occasional few seconds of activity.

I have tried repairing permissions on my hard drive, repairing disk on the external disk. Still the same.
I have been backing up for years using Time Machine (TM) which uses a hard drive connected to my Time Capsule on my network. I use an external drive connected to the Time capsule.Every night, my MBP is scheduled to backup which it has done for years. The last successful backup was 4 days ago. It stopped working and when I tried to click on TM starting manually, it hangs up and freezes Finder. I try to relaunch Finder and it freezes the computer by taking all icons off my desktop. I can use mail and other programs but FINDER will not work. I have used disk utilities to check the drive AND repair permissions.
The only way I can shut down is by holding the on/off button and then restarting. The computer starts up fine and works UNTILL I try to back up to TM again. The whole thing happens again. My O/S is regulary updated and I checked that too.
THere must be something corrupted or screwed up with the TM / Finder links.

However, for the past month or so when plug in my hard drive and try to back up my files using Time Machine, it completely freezes my computer, to the point where I need to hold down the power button for 10+ seconds and completely restart. At first I thought this might be due to not enough RAM, but discovered it does this even if all other programs are closed.

My date and time resets each time my mac sleeps or is reset or if I open date and time options. It keeps sending emails of my old reminders from 2008/2009 from ical and my to-do list emails me its reminders. This happens every time I open my comp or even just open date and time options. I also get the ical reminder notification that pops up freezes on my screen. Not sure how this happened, but can anyone help?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a Seagate 3 TB USB 2.0/3.0 external drive to use as my time machine backup drive. I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased about 3-4 years ago. The MacBook Pro has a 120 GB hard drive and is currently running MAC OSx 10.6.8. I also have another WD 1 TB FireWire external drive that I use to store all of my media files.
After I followed the instructions for installing the new Seagate drive for use with the MAC OSx, I initiated a time machine backup. It very quickly determined that it needed to back up almost 900,000 files totaling just about 400 GB. It started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. In a little less than an hour it reach 53 GB and remained there for an additional two hours before I decided to stop the backup.
Once I got the backup stopped, I deleted the backup and decided to look at my energy saving settings. I noticed that the "Put drives to sleep whenever possible" check box was checked, so I unchecked that option and restarted the MAC. I then initiated the time machine backup again. Like the first time it quickly determined that it needed to backup the same amount of data as before and started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. Before going to bed at around 11 PM last night it was at about 60 GB so I thought I was out of the woods (having gotten further than the 53 GB earlier). When I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM it was sitting at 69 GB.
I am really frustrated at this point and don't know why the time machine back up would be failing on a brand new hard drive. PS - I was previously using a Seagate 1.5 TB USB drive as my time machine backup and never had any issues with it. I decided to use the 1.5 TB drive for a different purpose, which is why I have the new 3 TB drive to use as a backup. And I still have the full backup on the 1.5 TB drive just in case anything were to go awry.

What happened: I was working late one night on a Keynote presentation. My battery ran out, and the computer did that hibernation thing it does when there's no battery power. I got my charger, connected it to my computer, and then pushed the power button. It started up for a second in to the gray screen it usually goes to. Then I turned around, tugging the magsafe charger out of the connector on the computer. This caused my computer to shut down again. Now I can't get it to boot at all.I've tried pretty much everything to deal with this. Multiple forced reboots, resetting PRAM and NVRAM, etc. I booted to original OSX disc and ran disc utility, but I discovered that there is *no disc to boot to*.
