MacBook :: Impact Of L2 / L3 Cache On Design / Drafting Purposes?
Jul 15, 2009
I am curious to know if L2/L3 cache impacts the performance of a macbook being used for Design and Drafting purposes. Of course this involves retrieving and real-time changes that will be made on a server and/or the macbook itself. Secondly, how significant will the functioning depend between a 3mb and a 4mb L2/L3 cache?
Looking at the 2012 13" model with 2.5Gzh I5 chip and 4GB RAM, any one know if this will work ok for designing on using the latest Adobe CS6 design standard suite? ALso can the 13" be connected to a standard DVI monitor using an adapter for the thunderbolt port.
I need to populate the bays of my new MacPro 2.66 with 5GB RAM. The stock HD turns out to be a Seagate 250GB HD ST3250820A. I've found them online and wonder if I just should RAID three or four of them as opposed to one Seagate 500GBs or 750 with 32GB cache? These would all be a Raid run by Apple software not a RAID card.
I did not pick up yesterday on the fact that Apple switched to a 45nm processor. This could have a dramatic impact on heat, especially with the new GPU!
I like my MacBook Air, but the font size when drafting email is a bit too small. For viewing regular email, I know I can use the Command and "=" to increase the size, but that does not work on the drafting window. how to increase the font size I view when drafting. (Just to be clear, this is just for my viewing -- I am not interested in changing the font in the email that is sent (I know how to do that).)
I would like to use Netflix to watch a few tv shows or movies on my Air, but in order to work, I need to download this plug-in. Does anyone know how this will impact battery life? Does the plug-in only run when needed or will it always be running in the background?
Wondering whether I should purchase a Macbook Air or Pro for college. I'm a Freshman and a inteded Political Science major with a minor in Secondary Education. I'm having a hard time picking
Which one of these 500gb drives is better? I've been browsing Newegg for two hours now reading reviews. The Seagate drives seem to come with bad firmware that causes performance and cache recognition issues. The Samsung drives have a high failure rate. Whats the real deal? Has anyone here had any bad experiences with either drives?
I have recently bought a MBP so am new to OSX.I dont have a backup version of OSX on CD or DVD. Is there a way of downlaoding a copy from the app store that I can archive in case I need to reload the MBP?Â

I am having a hard time deciding on which laptop I should buy. I narrowed my search down to:
-HP's HDX18, -MacBook Pro, t -Dell XPS 16, -Sony Vaio AW (with the 18 inch screen).
I watch movies in abundance. My film and music libraries are about 500GB. I also enjoy taking and editing movies and pictures. Weight is not an issue. I would be very thankful if you can help me choose which of these LTs is the most enjoyable. I'm going to Grad School in France next September. My laptop should be my main source of entertainment.
After a bit of Google research I've found countless notebook elevators for cooling purposes. So many to choose from. Just curious if any MacRumors users could share their first hand experience?
I have a 13" MBP and am looking for a slight elevator to let air get under the notebook. I do not want a stand with actual fans / coolers that plug into your notebook and use battery. I'm just looking for a simple, glorified phonebook to stick under the MBP
I'm going into high school and I have been doing my research in finding a laptop for me and high school. IÂ have been torn between the MacBook pro 13 inch 2.5 ghz and the MacBook air 13 inch 128 gb. I don't know what one to choose and I know that the air doesn't have a SuperDrive but you can get one on amazon for $25. I'm not going to be doing anything 3d or designing stuff. I'm prob going to get word PowerPoint and excel puton there and that's about it. I'm going to use the Internet a lot too! Let me know what I should do
Based upon my inability to update my iPad2 with its latest iOS 5.0.1, I was encouraged to and did change my DSN preferences in system preferences to the two Google ones (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). I think what I replaced were the original preferences put in place by my Internet provider, Charter.net. Are there adverse consequences of changing the DSN, and should I change them back to those placed there originally?

I have an early 2006 Intel iMac 17" with a Core Duo 1.83 GHz processor and the 128MB ATI Radeon X1600 GPU. I am planning on adding an external display to my iMac, probably a Dell Ultrasharp 23" with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. What I want to know is, what impact will running an 2nd display have on my iMac's frail and poorly cooled GPU?
At present, my GPU runs at around 45-50 C idle, and 60-65 C under gaming use. I have been considering opening my iMac again to clean all the dust out and renew the thermal paste on the GPU but simply haven't gotten around to this just yet. If the GPU is likely to run much hotter if a display is connected?
I am giving my old G4 iMac 20 (OS X 10.4.11) to a relative and have transferred my files; cleared caches, passwords, etc. and setup selected apps, iTunes songs, and iPhoto pictures for the new user. In order to conclude this iMac transfer, I have several questions:
When I change the Mac account to the new user and make her the administrator, what impact on the settings, iTunes songs, iPhoto phones, etc. whenever I delete my account/administrator?
while trying to make a presentation or simply playing a video from my MacBookAir over thunderbolt/HDMI table to large screen I am experiencing problems with audio only being played from the MBA and not the soundsystem built in to that screen (unless using a VLS application and manually selecting the audio output target). Â
how to steer audio output device using 2in1 cable such as thunderbolt?

my internet connection got extremely slow. I thought it was because our ADSL modem was acting up, so I restarted it several times. That didn't help at all. I didn't really need a fast connection until today, so I started digging to see if I could find where the problem was. Well, it turns out it's with the AirPort Express base station. Base stations, actually, as I have three. I couldn't get a good reception in the back of our house, so I bought a second that's used in the living room, which I now have connected to my stereo. AirTunes is very nice, as I found out. I also wanted to connect a printer wirelessly, so I bought a third AirPort Express to go in the back of the house (as that's where I put the printer).
I just need a bit of help deciding between a software RAID5 vs software RAID1 array for archival purposes. the RAID will be installed into my hackintosh and shared over the network for TimeMachine backups as well as extra backups from my multitudes of external HDDs. i am thinking 3x1TB WD Greens (RAID5) for $103Aus each, or 2x1TB WD Greens (RAID1). my main concern is data loss and speed of the drives. most setups will clearly equal 2TB of total data storage, we feel that will be enough for a few years (will be backing up 2x laptops + 2x iMacs + the hackintosh). which one will be faster? (i guess this wont matter as the network will be the bottlebeck) which one will be more secure in the end? (our house tends to have power dropouts). the network is a gigabit network over cat5e, we may upgrade to cat6e in the future if the speed benefits are THAT great. i am forced to go with a software RAID via OSX at this point in time because a RAID card is just too costly. my current motherboard in the hackintosh is a GA-EG31M-S2 Gigabyte. it has 4 SATA ports and no RAID support - will OSX still be able to do a software RAID? i am presuming that it can. anyway, what are the main pros and cons for this sort of setup?
I am trying to run Darwine 0.9.27 on my Mac (OSX 10.5.6) for emulation purposes, however it does not work. I downloaded X11 2.3.2.1 from the Xquartz project to make sure I was up to date with X11, however that did not solve the problem. For example, here is the error I get when I try and run Knytt, a compact, free Windows game: err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\Users\Banjaloupe\Games\Knytt\Knytt.exe" failed, status c0000005
I think the problem is with X11, since I also cannot run GIMPshop, which I know needs X11. However, I have no experience at all using X11 in the first place, which is why I am quite stumped. Of course, the real issue could be with Darwine, or some other incompatibility I'm missing.
I am in the market for a new monitor, I would look at matte IPS monitor, but so far (and I haven't done that much research so far) I have only really found the Dell 2209wa which looks great but its only 1680x1050 and I would much prefer 1920x1200 or something to that extent. Those are really my only requirements matte and 1920+ but I also don't want to go above 24" because then it just starts getting too big (especially since it will be in a dorm room next year).
Trying to decide which laptop to get for work. This will be my primary computer, and I'll be hooking it up to a 27" cinema display at home. I currently have an iMac 24" 2.8 core duo 4gb, but I need the portability of a laptop to work on at the office, and I don't want to keep the iMac and sync with the new laptop, I just want one machine to work on. Don't really want to spend over $1500 on the laptop, unless it is a significant upgrade. For work, I use some adobe cs5 apps, mostly photoshop, and every once in a while I use premiere to edit video off my canon t2i. The kicker is, I need to get something within 2 weeks. Like everyone, I'm anxious to see what the new MBP's are all about, but I have a feeling they'll definitely be more than $1500, considering the new air's are more than that when beefed up to 4gb, 256gb. I already ordered a cinema display as they are on sale, so figured might as well get that component. Here is what I'm thinking for choices.
My mother is switching to mac soon, mostly likely an iMac to use as a family computer for her and my youger sister. She likes what sees so far especially in parental controls. However, she wants to be able to keep tabs on my younger sister to make she isn't going to places or saying things she shouldn't be on the web; she wants a second layer of security (she worries that she can get around things parental controls because she is very computer savvy). I figured a keylogger would be the best thing because we could keep track of everything she types on the mac. Does anyone know any good (free) keyloggers for mac?
What is a good software for making demos? Mainly I'm looking for something that i can use to record screens of my mac pro and create a quicktime move out of it so that i can use it for training purposes. I read about SnapzPro but was wondering if there is anything else available.
My grand daughter has a class in Website design and they are telling her that she must use a PC format in the course. She has a MacBook with Leopard. If she installs MS XP, what else will she need in terms of software and is Parallels necessary? I also wonder why she cannot use the Mac as a Web design platform?
I purchased my Macbook in September of 2007. I was born and raised on Macs so I am familiar with the products.
1) They keys are leaving severe imprints on the screen. I have researched that they now sell products to prevent this - but I was not *warned of this at the purchace time. I presume that this is a design flaw as a $1400+ computer should not damage the screen - I guess that there not there is not enough space between the top and bottom. I do not slam cover when I close nor do I carry it around in a backpack full of book squishing the computer. Please advise.
2) The outside of the white cover (of which I purchaced and used religiously the $60 plastic protective piece) is changing colour and there are 'scratch' like marking all over the top and bottom.
3) The bottom of the keypad keep chipping off, I have had to replace this twice and am looking at a third time. Fortunetly Mac acknowledeges this defect and cover the service fee.
I have genuinly enjoyed all the macs I have had over the years, but am downright frustreated with this Laptop!
I am planning to buy the base new 15" MBP. I am going to use it for graphic and web design work along with doing other stuff like browsing, email, music, watching movies, etc. The programs I plan to use are:
- Adobe CS4/5 (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash) - Coda + Transmit - iMovie and GarageBand (slight movie and sound editing, nothing too large) - Windows XP under Parallels Desktop for testing pages on IE
I am also planning on getting the 24" ACD to hook it to the MBP. This will also be my main and only computer. Would the base model be enough for this? I currently have an 20" iMac Intel Core 2ghz and while it feels kinda slow when working on comps and large files in Photoshop it pulls through, so I am thinking that the base new 15" MBP would very much smoke my current iMac.
