MacBook :: Hard Drive Spins Loud On Black?

Jul 17, 2009

A while back I was running low on hard disk space so decided to upgrade my hard drive. Went ahead and upgraded to 320Gb. Then after some time, I noticed that the hard drive was making a large spinning noise so I thought it was a bad drive and RMA'd it. I just recently got the new drive and installed it and the drive was making that same loud spinning noise. Now I'm frustrated with this and want to get to the end of it. I'm thinking it might be the rubbers are out of place that holds the drive.

Intel Mac :: 24" (mid 2007) Black Boot Screen, Fans Run Normal, HDD Spins, Optical Drive Spins?

Jun 15, 2012

So my girlfriend boss wanted me to fix her computer. So I brought it home turned it on, and it didnt chime but it booted to the gray screen with apple logo/ slashed circle/and folder with a "?" So I made a USB Mac OS x bootable drive (FLASH) held down alt (try using a windows keyboard its fun)  was able to select option and install a fresh copy. all seemed well was running really hot so I poped of the screen. HOLY MOLY! this thing is CAKED with dust, and I am not kidding it has literally piles of dust. So I ran updates, and did firmware updates. Turned it off for the night.

The next morning I went to radio shack and got Dust remove spray, opened it up made sure I was carful taking off the screen, and blew the sucker out. now its NICE and CLEAN. then i made sure I plugged everything in and turned it on. Drive spun like normal, Optical checked for a CD, and fans are also running normally. but no chime, no nothing stays as silent as normal but doesnt budge, it is like it hangs.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Spins And Super Drive Make Noise - No Boot Up

Jan 7, 2010

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

OS X :: Randomly Spins Up External Hard Drive?

Aug 4, 2009

So I have an external hard drive hooked up to my MBP via USB. I've noticed that every now and then (maybe every half hour or hour?) the drive spins up. It's actually really annoying, as the drive makes a loud sound as it spins up.

I can't figure out why it does this; the drive spins up and then goes back idle. Time machine is DISABLED, spotlight index on the drive is DISABLED as well. I use the drive solely for storing movies/music. There are NO applications installed on it. The only apps I have open are finder/preview/safari/firefox/adium/itunes. My guess is that some process is trying to access the drive for whatever reason now and then.

Hardware :: External Hard Drive Spins Up But Won't Mount?

Feb 25, 2009

I have a LaCie 320 GB external hdd (USB 2.0) that worked perfectly until last night. Now it won't mount when I connect it to my computer, nor can I see it in Disk Utility. Disk Warrior can't see it either. I tried connecting it to my roommate's MBP with no luck.

It spins up just fine and doesn't make any clicking noises or anything like that, so I feel like there might just be some hope yet; I'm thinking it might just be a faulty USB cable or something, but I don't have a spare one to try it with.

IMac :: Hard Drive Spins Up - Crunches A Bit And Power Down Again

May 1, 2010

I've noticed recently that when my imac is sleeping it's HDD spins up, crunches a bit like it does and then power down again. The screen and everything else is off, just the HDD comes on. Does anyone know what this could be? It's happened a couple of times in the last week. It's the Seagate drive BTW.

Mac Pro :: Hard Drive Spins Up Periodically - Even With Sleep Option Enabled

Dec 28, 2008

I have a 2008 Mac Pro with the original OSX drive and then two other hard drives, one I use for Boot Camp/Fusion and the other for my work files. Under Energy Save in system preferences, I have it so that the drives will sleep whenever possible. The issue I'm having is one of the drives, I think the one with my work files, will wake from sleep every 15 minutes or so even if I'm not accessing any of the files. I haven't timed it exactly but it's around 15-20 minutes and happens throughout the day. What is causing the drive to wake? I disabled iStat Pro because before the drives would spin every time I checked my dashboard so that's not the problem anymore.

PowerPC :: G3 Hard Drive Spins Up And Down Constantly In Sleep Mode?

Aug 21, 2009

I put it on Craig's list so wanted to wipe the drive and figure I'd play around with OS 9 a little just for fun. While in OS 9 it prompted me to upgrade the firmware on the DVD-ROM drive. I thought that sounded like a good idea since it makes some terrible noises when a disc is in... anyway, I did the firmware upgrade and everything went fine. That's the only real change I can think of that might have contributed to this new issue.Anyway, after that I put 10.3 on it again (I had 10.4 on it before) and it wouldn't sleep correctly. Everything looks like its going to sleep ok, then the hard drive spins up, then back down, over and over again endlessly.

Hardware :: Attached Hard Drive Spins Up Along With Time Capsule

Aug 24, 2009

I am enjoying my Time Capsule and have kept it in front of me for the last week to see how it behaves. I have noticed that when I attach my other external hard drive to it it will behave exactly like the Time Capsule. By this I mean that after 2 minutes of inactivity they will both spin down but when it is backup time in an hour both will start up simultaneously and my attached external hard drive will get to speed and instantly shut off again while the TC does it's thing. My questions are, can this be stopped and why is it doing this? Surely it would not spin up the external drive along with the TC as spinning it up 12 times a day isn't doing the external drive any favors...

MacBook :: Hard Drive Making Clicking Noise / Fan Is Pretty Loud?

Sep 26, 2010

I am so upset right now, this is my 2nd macbook with this problem. I just got this macbook yesterday and the hard drive is making a clicking noise, but it isn't a click....click...click... like a lot of people have had, it's actually more of a quick series of clicks every few seconds, almost like the hard drive is shaking. It goes away for a bit when I am typing, like right now, but after I stop it comes right back.

Also the fan is pretty loud, considering I haven't put anything on the computer yet.. I've already been to the genius bar and all they did was give me a new, worse macbook, so there is no way I'm going back. Are there any fixes for a noisy hard drive aside from voiding my warranty and putting my own in? If it is normal, I might just invest in a good pair on noise cancelling head phones... Thanks!

Power Mac G5 :: Hard Drive Loud And Shut Down Computer Message

This morning the hard drive on my G5 sounded like it was at 8000 rpm's and there was a message on my screen to shut down the computer using the power button. I did this. Now anytime I try to power back up, I get the white screen with the apple and the "booting" icon, which then goes to a blue screen with the same icon, which then is just the blue screen with my mouse icon floating around. Also, on the random occasion, after booting to the blue screen it takes me to a DOS looking screen that asks for my login and password, of which I have neither.

MacBook :: Shall I Fit A 7200rpm Hard Drive Into My Black

Feb 21, 2009

i bought high spec black macbook refurbished which came with a 5400rpm drive inside it.

Im using logic pro, and its been running fine with small projects, but when i have a medium sized project using several vst instruments and exs24s using many audio samples, all of which are running off the internal.... i get error messages, system overload messages...and i am unable to bounce to audio file (in logic pro)

im thinking its the slow hard drive which is causing the main problems.

I have 2gb ram. It also takes sometimes over 5 mins to open this logic file.

Or is this poor performance par for the course, if using just one internal drive, for both system files and audio storage....... ?

Are there possible probs which may arise from taking out the 5400 drive and fitting a faster 7200 drive in to my macbook? I hear it will heat up more....so could this mess with other macbook componets?? the excess heat...... or are macbooks bulit to handle 7200rpm drives too? dont remember is 7200 was an optional upgrade with my model or not......

2.4ghz intelcore2duo.

Anybody fitted a 7200 drive into their macbooks? all running ok??

Would i simply put the new hard drive in..... and then boot up from boot dvds and my time machine backup....to have a full up to date system, all apps and file intact as they are now? Im worried it will get messy and problems...... my current drive is packed to rafters with apps and files and work i have done......i dont want to lose a thing.....would it be a simple easy fool proof transition to faster hard drive?

And could i still use the current hard drive? With an enclosure?

Ive heard people have ripped out the opticla dvd drive and fitted ANOTHER hard drive into their macbooks, so the laptop housing two hard drives..... that sounds good...but crazy..... maybe later ill do that....as i hardly use the cd/dvd drive...... and you can always hook it up with wire if need be

OS X :: 2nd Hard Drive Dies In MacBook Black?

Jun 1, 2009

I've got a 2gb MacBook Black, which is about 2.5-3 years old.

Last year (about October I think) I had the hard drive fail, at which point I got the IT guy in work to replace it with a spare from a similar machine. The new drive has just failed - it makes tick-tick noises when you try to boot up, and the ?-folder icon appears on the screen. The new drive is dated 2008, so it's not like it got an old wreck.

Could I have another problem that's killing hard drives? The only non-standard thing in the machine is a memory upgrade from [URL]. Are there any common user behaviours which would increase the risk of hard drive failures. The machine is left at home most days, and is always carried around in a padded sleeve/case.

The machine mostly gets used for internet browsing, with a bit of iTunes and photo organising, but nothing particularly heavy.

It's a Hitachi hard drive that was in it - I've ordered a Seagate as a replacement. If it dies I'll get a new machine, but I'm hoping I won't have to.

MacBook :: Inserting New Hard Drive In Black (2006)?

Dec 22, 2010

I purchased a Hitachi Travelstar 2.5 Inch 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA II 16 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02858 to replace the dead hard drive in my black macbook (late 2006). I have the old hard drive out. Here are my 2 questions.... first, there is no pull tab on the new hard drive. How will I get it out if I need to? The one I removed is a Seagate and has a covering on the top with the plastic pull tab. should I put that over the new hard drive? It comes right off the old one. Second, when I compare the connectors there is a section, looking straight on at the pins, on the far left that in the old one has 4 pins. In the new Hitachi there is just an empty compartment. Does that mean it won't work? Or should I just try it? If I leave it without the plastic pull tab how will it come out if I have to get it back out?

MacBook :: Finding An Internal Hard Drive For Black?

Oct 12, 2009

i own a black macbook.

my current drive is FUJITSU MHY2250BH which came with the macbook.

I need a biggeer drive, the biggest possible, and I would like 7200rpm as i do alot of audio intensive work etc and really push the laptop.

i found a 500gb fujitsu, but the dimensions are slightly diff to my current drive.

should i make sure the dimensions are exactly the same? eg to the millimetre??

i just want to know about what specs to watch out for.

i live in uk, so dont really want to buy from a usa retailer.

also, would i be able to use my current drive as an external drive? how could i plug it into macbook? an enclousre? or just a wire?

i also have a bootcamp partition currently.

would the new drive be a simple change over? ie. no need to reinstall any app or boot camp from scratch again? i think i read that we can just use a time machine back up to put my current macbook drive state onto the new drive.

OS X :: New Internal Hard Drive Not Mounting In Black Macbook?

Feb 18, 2010

I have a 1st generation Macbook laptop. I swapped out the original 80GB HD & installed a larger 320GB internal HD I recently bought on Ebay. At 1st, everything seemed ok, the hard drive mounted ok and I went ahead and proceeded to 1st partition the drive into 4 80GB separate partitions, with a plan to install Snow Leopard on one of the partitions, have 1 for room for a backup drive, and the other 2 partitions would host Windows 7 & possibly Linux, via (bootcamp). After experiencing some frustration with the installation of Snow Leopard, it appeared everything was ok, so then I went ahead and migrated my entire original 80GB mac factory HD over into 1 of my partitions. Everything seemed to go quite smoothly up to this point. However, soon afterwards, my HD somehow was no longer mounting! It still has not mounted ever since this time. I have tried taking the HD out and swapping it with the old one and it still will not mount. However, the original hard drive mounts right away without any issues. My entire livelihood is essentially thru my computer as an online grad student, so I went out to Frys Electronics & purchased a WD Scorpion Blue 500 GB HD after experiencing all of these issues. The new HD is working flawlessly. However, my issue and question is, what can anyone with technical knowledge suggest I do to completely erase the other non-mounting HD? I plan to send the non-mounting HD back for reimbursement to the Ebay seller soon. I'm concerned because, as I previously mentioned up above, this HD still potentially is holding all of my personal information from my previous drive I had for years installed into the macbook.

MacBook :: CD / DVD Drive Spins But Disc Not Recognized

Dec 21, 2009

Here is what is going on with my MacBook:
-If I insert a music CD, the CD drive spins it and makes noise. It does not open iTunes or even show it on the desktop. It is not recognized. Then the computer ejects the disc.
-My iDVD software seems to have taken a crap. I am prompted every time the computer boots up that iDVD has quit unexpectedly and gives the options of "relaunch" "cancel" or "report to Apple".
-This is the weird part: I was going to reinstall Leopard OSX from the disc. The computer reads the discs and the "X" screen pops up. I then try to go through to reinstall the software as it tells me that it will restart.

It restarts and then ejects the disc when the Apple logo pops up. Therefore I cannot reinstall the software. Does this sound like a software or hardware problem? Can the fact that iDVD is not working mean that my CD's would not play? Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do here? I am desperate and would like to know what other approach I should take before I put a new drive in.

White MacBook, 2yrs old. 500gbhd, 4g RAM.

I looked a little online and discovered I may still need to reset the SMC (shift-control-option + power key), which I will do shortly. The battery lasted 6-7 hours before with my old hdd and is at 96% capacity.
