OS X :: Virus Attack Site?

Dec 11, 2009

On rare occasions I end up at a virus attack site where the owner tries to get me to dl a virus by telling me my computer is infected already...last night was the first time I came upon one of those while using OSX. I just couldn't stop laughing, and so added it to failblog today, thought all of you might appreciate it too.

I accidentally opened a virus folder off of my flashdrive from the school computer. I dragged the folder and .exe file to the trash bin and deleted them. I forgot what it is called but it put a restore folder in the flash drive. I was never given the prompt to put my password in to install anything (I wouldn't have if I was.)

MacBook Pro :: How Does Apple Customize Their Computers

Jul 19, 2009

I read a few posts that gave me the vibe that Apple basically rolls out a bunch of stuff with the same configuration, and when someone wants a machine with more horsepower, they take one of these out the stock components and put in the higher end stuff. Is this true?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Keep Many Apple Computers Updated

Mar 28, 2012

As time passed, we have many, many computers around our institution. At some point, users were able to update their individual software without admin assistants. However, we have changed the policy, and users can't do this anymore. Therefore, is there an easy way to push updates to multiple apple computers? The apps that need to be updated include:

1. Apple OS

2. Individual Applications

3. Apple Firmware

If you could list what product works best, and if Apple does have a in-house solution.

Applications :: Settings For BitTorrent Downloads? (Peer Guard)

Feb 7, 2009

I'm new to Mac and downloaded Transmission. Coming from a PC, it seems too simple to function so smoothly. But, I still have questions. On a PC, I used to use Azureus and Peerguardian. But, I'm at a loss as to what I need for a Mac.

1. Anyway, what settings should I have on Transmission?
2. Under Preferences, I checked the Blocklist box "Prevent known bad peers from connecting." Does this act like Peerguardian?
3. Should I download Peerguardian for the Mac? Is Transmission sufficient?
4. What other applications do you recommend?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Malware/hacking Attack - Redirect, Login & Password And Fake Email Setup

Jun 7, 2012

I have a mac mini and macbook pro.   As you will see, the issues are complex.  I spoke to both Apple and my server many times:  all determined to help solve the issue as a technical problem, but rather complacent about the strong possibility of new malware.  Both ended up basically with 'dunno'.    Needless to say, I backup regularly via time machine. These probs represent the downside!   My workplace techs said one was probably flashback (dealt with as per apple advice), the other like dnschanger - but a new and more invidious version. I'm probably giving away too much information, but it's a bit late to worry about that.

Both did different things AT THE SAME TIME, with the same sites.  Therefore, it was definitely not a server issue.  Both were consistent.I've had odd behaviour:  redirect included bypassing my proxy server and going online despite not putting in login details, and after logging in: in both instances, I was taken to Wikipedia front page.  Also:Many times, lists of links instead of genuine front pages:  Apple and server. Only 'big names' seemed affected.  Other times, it looked ok but when I clicked on links I got nothing. I had problems logging on to App store and broadband provider, as well as software sites (2 x legit big apple-oriented companies).  After the going online and redirect issue above, I decided to create new apple id and o2 email.  I did a secure (as far as it goes) 7-layer wipe  of the macbook, and reinstalled.Within a week, I had odd behaviours again.  Two examples:

MacBook :: Do I Actually Have A Virus?

May 27, 2009

I recently got a Macbook. I love it so far, I've had it for less than a week. I had been using it at my mom's (she uses on of those Timemachine things. They double as a wireless router right?)Anyways that was working great. Now I'm at my dad's where the computers (PCs) have had histories of viruses, worms, and other bad stuff; this is mainly cause my dad and step family are idiots about downloads and aren't very responsible.

Anyways, I was just browsing the internet today - no weird sites that would be fairly dangerous - and a message popped up saying that I could be infected! I was feeling safe just the other day learning that Macs are very safe from computer viruses and stuff. A windows message popped up to notify me (which is really strange because I had only installed Windows office on this Macbook). But I'm thinking that its a fake message and instead some sort of trojan horse. Could it have come through the wireless network to reach this Mac? I dunno what happened, but I'm scared because this Mac is new and I would really like it to not screw up.

But if it does, I got this Mac through my university, so I have support and a warranty, so I could get this replaced if it got really bad right?
