MacBook :: Battery Doesn't Count Down - SMC?

Jun 18, 2012

13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008 battery wasn't holding a charge based on the fact that its been used and abused since 2008.  Around the same time (2 months ago) my MagSafe power supply started becoming frayed and damaged.  So, I decided to buy both a new power supply and battery.  I bought the power supply from Apple.com and the battery from Best Buy.  Ever since my new purchase I no longer get a count down on my remaining battery level.  It either says (charged) or (Not Charging) based on if I have the power supply plugged in. If I leave the power supply out and the battery dies it no longer goes into the power save mode.  Now it just turns my laptop off.  I have tried a couple things like SMC reset but no luck.  Any suggestions?  Maybe I am doing the SMC reset wrong?  I unplug the MacBook and take the battery out and hold down the power button for 5 seconds.  I cant tell that its done anything.  Another problem that started happen more recently.. When i close the lid of my MacBook it seems that its no longer going to sleep.  The fan is running high and the battery dies..

MacBook :: How To Reset Cycle Count For New Battery

Sep 18, 2010

The title says it all. I have a new battery in my 2007 MacBook, but my computer still says it's at 237 cycles. Is there a way to reset the cycle count? It does say, however, the battery is at 100% health.

MacBook Pro :: Battery Cycle Count 60 In One Month?

Well I've had my mbp(new model) for just a month now and the cycle count is up to 60 and battery health has gone down to 96%. Should I be worried or is it normal?

MacBook Air :: Cycle Count On Battery Rapidly Increasing

Mar 26, 2008

So first off, I absolutely love my MBA. Now that we have that out of the way. Since day 1 I've noticed that the cycle count on the battery seems to be climbing MUCH faster than it should.

- I've had the machine 51 days. I was out of the country without it for 9 days so really, I've had it for 42 days.
- According to iStat and System Profiler my battery's cycle count is 37
- According to System Profiler my battery's health is "Good"
- According to iStat my battery's health is at 98% (It started around 96%, has been as low as 94% but seems to have settled in at 97 or 98% for some time now)
- According to system profiler my maximum charge is 5006 mAh. (It's also gone up a bit since the machine was new).

I thought the definition of a cycle was the equivalent of 100% depletion of the battery -- whether that's one long unplugged stint that sucks it dry or 10 really short ones. A cycle is the same as using ~5000 mAh of battery power. I've been really good about keeping it plugged in while I work (the outlet is conveniently located). I've run the battery most the way down maybe 5 times. I do, however, run it down 10 or 20% almost every day as the machine travels with me in sleep mode or spends the night unplugged in sleep mode at my girlfriend's place).

I haven't done any careful testing but it seems though that if I run the battery down just 20% or 30% or so and then charge it all the way back up the cycle count increases by 1. Considering I've only used it for 42 days, and the cycle count is already at 37, I'm worried that it will hit 200 cycles by the time it's 8 or 10 months old. Isn't the point where battery performance starts to wane? Anyone else out there notice a rapidly climbing cycle count?

MacBook Pro :: Reoccuring Errors With Volume File Count, Directory Count, Etc?

Apr 14, 2012

I purchased a new MacBook Pro 17" with OS X Lion (10.7.2) preinstalled back in January of this year (2012).  I migrated my user accounts from my old MacBook Pro 15" (2008) running OS X Snow Leopard.  Almost right away I started having issues of all sorts, including Admin accounts that wouldn't allow me admin priveledges, hidden user groups, apps that wouldn't run, multiple obscure error messages and a host of other issues.  After scouring forums like this one I used Disk Utility and not only discovered innumerable permission errors but also disk errors like these:

Invalid volume file count
(It should be 1656658 instead of 1656636)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 345764 instead of 345743)
Invalid volume free block count

[code]....

And now, this morning, after a month or two of all that... and after installing the Java Security Upgrade last night, I can't get into my accounts at all.  On first boot-up it hung for 20 minutes before I shut it down.  After running Disk Utility from Recovery Drive and repairing the drive I rebooted and got the log-in screen.  I clicked on my user icon, typed the correct password, was shown they white/grey screen for a few flickering seconds then was brought back to the log-in screen.  I rebooted to the Recovery Disk, ran Disk Utility, saw all the same errors again, repaired the disk, rebooted and got the same problems with logging in again.

I've repeated this cycle five times today, as both a normal boot-up and in "Safe Mode" all with the same results.  I've repaired the disk using Disk Utility from Recovery Disk as well as accessing the disk in Target Mode, and always there are the same errors needing to be repaired.

I don't buy that I'm dealing with a hardware issue.  My antivirus and security software are all up-to-date.  What the heck is going on?  Why do I keep having these disk problems?  Why can't I access my accounts anymore?  Why does it keep hanging during boot-up?  Why am I about to throw the machine out my bedroom window?

MacBook Pro :: Invalid Volume File Count And Directory Count?

May 1, 2012

My wife's macbook pro started shutting down by itself randomly, so i performed Disk Utility Verify Disk and found these errors: Invalid volume file count(It should be 800651 instead of 800653)Invalid volume directory count(It should be 191005 instead of 191003)The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed. As i do not have the Mac OS Leopard disks physically with me, I target-disk started her mac on my mac, and use my mac to run Disk Utility on her hard-disk, and repaired the disk without problems.

However, this is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. After the 1st time, i figured something is causing it, so i checked this forum, and found that for some, the Blackberry Messenger app causes programs, so i promptly uninstalled it fully (including associated system files) and this problem didnt come back for a while. Or could this be a sign the hard disk is physically failing soon? It is out of warranty now. We have regular Time-machine backups. We are actually kinda waiting out until the new line of macbook pro's come out..

OS X :: Battery Recognized - Charging - 0 MAh Capacity And 0 Cycle Count

Oct 5, 2010

I got rained on and my macbook got soaked. I dried out my macbook in an airtight container with some special salt for a few days, and luckily got rid of most of the water issues with my monitor. Unfortunately, my battery or logic board seems to have not been so lucky. My macbook is a one and a half year old 13" unibody, and now won't turn/stay powered on unless it's plugged in. For the first 15 minutes I've plugged in the magsafe charger, the battery is recognized. It says it's charging but stays at 0% (I then get the X over the battery icon). The weird thing is that my previously health battery now has a 0 mAh charge capacity and a 0 cycle count. Is there ANY possible solution to this, or has the damage already been done?

MacBook :: Doesn't Indicate Low Battery - Shuts Down Unexpectedly

Mar 25, 2010

I own the first 'remolded' revision of the Macbook released in '08 (5,1), and have had it for over a year now. Recently though, after 10 or so minutes running off just battery power (fully charged), it shuts down unexpectedly. It doesn't say the battery is low, or near low, it just shuts down. It's really annoying, I have to use the charger wherever I go. I really need my laptop so I don't really want to take it to an Apple Store and have to wait a week to get it fixed, unless it's really necessary. My software is up to date. Any ideas on what my problem is/how to fix it?

Macbook Pro (Lion) Doesn't Detect Battery Yet Working

May 15, 2012

I have bought Macbook Pro last year. Its 2.4 Ghz Intel Core i5 machine with 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Of late it used to go to sleep randomly even while working. Last week I took it to Apple store who was not able to diagnose the cause of the problem but as a precautionary measure has changed, as per him, a bus connecting harddrive to the logic board. However the problem was still not solved. Few hours ago suddenly the machine went off and on starting it I found that it is not detecting the batteries. On the battery icon it displays an X, states "no batteries are available" and randomly switches the power source from battery to adapter and back. There is no light on the adapter. [code]

MacBook :: Unable To Charge Battery / Computer Doesn't Recorgnize The Charger

Jun 14, 2008

I have had my MacBook (aluminum) for 6 days, and all of a sudden i go to plug it in to charge (10% left) and the led on the magsafe doesn't come on and the computer doesn't recorgnize the charger (even in system profiler).

upon closer inspection i noticed the LED is on on the magsafe, it is just a very faint shade of green.I have tried a charger from a different MacBook but no luck. And i have also tried my charger and a different macbook and it charged it just fine.. so it's probably not my charger.

Any ideas?? i know i can go get it replaced.. but i would really like to not have to take a 45 minute drive to the apple store if i can avoid it.. (unless this problem is serious and should be replaced) also, if i get a replacement is it possible for them to just swap my HDD with the new one?

MacBook Pro :finding Alternative To Tweetie (a Twitter Client That Doesn't Drain Battery Life)

May 9, 2010

After discovering that the Tweetie app I use turns on the discrete GPU, I've been looking at alternatives to maximize battery life. A lot of twitter clients use Adobe Air, which also seems to get a bad rep, but is that because it drains battery life too, or because it's just buggy otherwise? So far I've been using twhirl without any obvious issues, and I'm testing out the battery usage with that running. I have to admit, I didn't notice any significant battery drain when Tweetie was running, so maybe I'm just overreacting here. If I remember right I got a little over 6 hours, and installed Tweetie about two hours after I turned my MacBook on then. I'd actually prefer twhirl since I use that on the desktop and I'm just used to it, but not if Adobe Air is going to cause problems on my shiny new MacBook.

PowerPC :: Battery Doesn't Charge On Powerbook G4?

Oct 26, 2010

Some days ago i finally added a Powerbook g4 to my Mac collection and since then ive been trying to fix this computer without any results. The Powerbook had the battery dead at first and i had to replace it with a new one i had. Now the problem/weird thing is that the computer detects the battery but it doesnt charge. It has about 18% of the charge and when i try to boot up all i hear is like a fan sound and nothing more, no boot up sound and no image on the screen.

If i boot up using the power cable thats when i see the 18% of the battery icon, but as soon as i take out the power cord, the image goes black although the computer still makes sounds as if it was on. Does it have any solution? PS: ive tried to reset the PMU,changed the pRam for a new one, reset the Nvram.
