OS X :: Time Machine Restore With Excluded Folders / Will I Lose Them
Jul 28, 2010I am having issues buring CDs in Finder. Went to the Apple Store this past weekend as I have AppleCare. The genius there couldn't figure out the problem and only recommended I do a "Archive and install" of 10.6. Reluctantly, I did that today. Now I have lost most of my customizations to Finder, getting weird errors with some of my apps that load on login, and the problem still persists.
Instead of wasting hours on end getting the system up-to-date and trying to figure out all the errors Im getting, I decided to restore using Time Machine. I was about to restore a backup from yesterday (most up-to-date), but hesitated as I have never done a "Full" restore from TM before. So I decided to do a bit of research. From what I have been reading, the destination volume will be wiped clean and replaced by the backup. Normally this would be ok, but I remembered I excluded some folders from my Time Machine backup to cut down on space (Applications folder and VMs for example). I'm worried that if I restore using the "Restore from Backup" utility, I will lose the content in those folders.
Can anyone confirm what exactly will happen if I do a "Full Restore"? Will I lose those "excluded" folders? If so, is there any way I can restore only the System Folder for my backup (that's really the only thing I need to restore). I am slightly panicked and ready to go back to the Apple Store and rip that Genius a new one.
(Yes I know he couldn't have know about my specific backup setup, but he said that a "Archive and Install" would fix the problem. He also said that I wouldn't run into any issues afterwards, which was also false. Also, I know I am over-reacting but I have a valid reason to be peeved ATM)

May 20, 2012I have just synced 148 out of my total 225 apps to my new iPhone - and spent over an hour and a half sorting them out again in to my desired configuration! I am now concerned that my apps will be reinstalled and reconfigured again when I sync my music - forcing me to again spend the time sorting them out. Is this the case or will my apps stay where they are and unaffected? The message I am receiving is as follows;
The iPhone “Lukes’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.

Dec 6, 2014So I deleted some music from My Music, not to the trash. I thought I was in a playlist and deleting from the playlist but I wasn't. And apparently there is no undo function in iTunes to undo this. Why is that? If you delete something why can't you undo it? Regardless of that is there anyway to get back to the older state of iTunes that included the tracks with the play count and the ratings that were there before? Perhaps something in Time Machine that can restore this?

ITunes For Mac :: How To Restore Library To Music Folder
Dec 4, 2014I've just had to do a complete restore of my iMac. It was acting very oddly, so I chose to restore the Applications and the System Settings manually, especially as a full restore did not fix the problem.
In the process, I did not restore my Music folder and, to boot, the Time Machine backup files seem to have gone invisible to Time Machine as I cannot see them in Time Machine. I can, however, see them in the finder and have been able to restore most everything from the backups. I have been able to bring the iTunes file onto the desktop, but want to put it in the Music folder shown in the panel on the LHS of the Finder window. The system will not permit me to put it there, or am I missing something? iTunes runs just fine from the file, but I'd like it to be in the right place, and not on my Desktop. This is all with the latest Yosemite.

Nov 4, 2010My problem is this: A few weeks ago, the (not over-worked at all) HD of my two and a half year old MBP crashed completely. Fortunately, I have Applecare, so the HD was replaced without any difficulty and free of charge, and returned reasonably rapidly. However, all of my data, and perhaps equally upsetting, my entire iTunes collection (not far off 6,000 songs) has also vanished into the ether of cyberspace. (Did I have anything backed up? Um, no. Second moral of the story: Back-ups are Good).
Anyway, I have the entire music collection on two iPods, a classic (80GB) and a iTouch (64GB). My problem is how to restore this collection to iTunes, as syncing either of them at present may result in the further obliteration of the music collection. So, fellow denizens of MR, advise me please: What is the best way to attempt to restore - from an iPod to iTunes - a prized music collection? Senuti has been mentioned; is it recommended, and what does it entail? It was also suggested to me that I use the Classic for this attempted restoration, rather than the Touch.

Nov 14, 2008I had to move around my files recently so needed to change the location iTunes looked for them. I ran across a hack whereby you edit the iTunes Music Library.xml file and then intentionally corrupt the iTunes Library.itl file so that it reimports the next time you restart iTunes (I'm sure many of you may already be familiar with this hack).
It almost works. Problem is that it doesn't import all my files. I have over 10000 files but it only imports 6445 of them. I noticed that the original xml filesize is 16MB. After importing, it gets chopped down to 10MB. What the heck is happening here?

MacBook Pro :: Lose Audio After Converting Avi To Dvd?
Jan 1, 2011After converting avi files to dvd I lose audio on more than half the files. The audio works fine on the avi file. However once its converted the movie plays with no sound.
I'm currently using a free trial version of divX convertor. Then I use iDVD to burn the movie. However the problem isn't with iDVD because when I just try to play the converted movie through the divX player or quicktime there is no sound. Obviously the same holds true when I send the converted file to iDVD.
1. What is the reason for this happening?
2. Do I need to use a different convertor? Or do I need to install additional programs?
3. I'm not the most computer savvy person so please try to give a simple explanation and instruction.

MacBook Pro :: Lose Lower Bezel Hinge
Jul 11, 2009The black strip that covers the hinge on my mbp (the one beneath the MacBook Pro writing) is getting increasingly loose. It slides left and right and also makes clicking noises whenever the lid is opened / shut. Obviously this is a cosmetic annoyance, but as ever, this wasn't the cheapest of laptops so faults like this are quite annoying. Anyone else had similar issues? Also is there way of taking it off and repositiong it without having to take too much of the machine apart?

At the end of the work day I generally unplug the network cable, Apple Cinema Display, and then just put it to sleep by closing the lid. Some days I use it later after I get home, others I don't. If I leave it in Sleep mode I generally lose about 5-8% of the battery by the next morning.
I'm just wondering if I'd be better off shutting it down completely each night. Any pros/cons? Battery considerations?

I've only been using the laptop a few days, but it seems like the battery goes down from 100% very quickly. For example, right now I've only been using the computer for half an hour and the battery has gone from 100% to 71%. I haven't been watching movies, etc., just browsing the web.

Oct 3, 2010Lately I've noticed that whenever I put my Mac to sleep, I lose a few megabytes. At first I didn't think anything about it. Until one day I let sleep for a while I was doing something, and came back to, and saw that I had lost about 300 megabytes. While it was in sleep, no applications were running and nothing was downloading. My mac is Macbook pro, 3 years old, 120 gigabyte, 2 gb of ram, 2.33 Ghz Intel Core duo, Model Identifier: 2,2, and Serial Number:W86481HGW0H Right now it's running leopard. I'm about to upgrade to Snow Leopard. So why would it lose this hard drive space when it's in sleep mode? By the way, I bought it used one year ago. So I've only had it a year. I haven't downloaded anything from any untrustworthy websites. I only download things from trusted sources(i.e. itunes.) Please help. Right now my only solution is to keep a close eye on it, and make sure that it does not go to sleep!

MacBook Pro :: Latest Unibody Macbook Pro Screens Still Lose?
Jul 4, 2009One of the biggest reasons why I didn't go for the unibody mbp is because the screen is very loose in my opinion. So loose that when you orient the laptop more than 50-60 degrees vertically, the screen will automatically start folding on itself (which it then stops when the screen reaches a 30~ish degree difference from the bottom)
I like to use my laptop a lot in bed so it is one the biggest gripes. Have Apple come to their senses and tightened the screen?
Ironically, the Apple store representative gave me the biggest BS excuse for this, they told me it was so that the laptop would not lift if you open the screen up.
That is great *BUT* the screen actually gets STIFFER as you move it more towards the base rather than looser which it should be. It's loose from about 30-110 degree, and then from the 0 to 30 degree it's pretty stiff, enough to laughably lift the device. I showed how stupid his logic was by showing him this problem on one of the devices at the store and he's like, well I don't know then.
Anyone with the latest unibody can attest to any change? This isn't a singular problem as I've found it on every single 15 inch macbook pro.
Oh I forgot to mention, this problem only affects the 15inch and maybe 17inch mbp (I haven't tested it on the 17 so I wouldn't know)
