Aug 15, 2008I'm currently using a 60gb MacBook 1.83 w/leopard. My Time Machine volume is a 250gb USB drive.
Over time I could see myself filling the drive because I listen to a lot of podcasts and since time machine is doing a backup rather than a sync, every podcast present on the system at the time of backup is retained.
So, is there a way to enable sync-mode rather than backup mode for certain directories, OR is there a way to go into the backup history and delete files and/or directories (this seems to be locked/protected, rightfully so)?

Aug 22, 2010I just sold my iMac (described in sig) and need to backup my stuff to an external drive. What (free) program would allow me to backup my user name without having to manually drag everything over? Migration Assistant won't work as there will be a few days where I have no computer. Also I don't want to back up the OS itself; just my home folders (Pictures Music Movies etc.) and some applications.

It means you can copy your work between two computers go away with one and work for a few months come back and sync it with the other and vice versa. To do this you need to connect two computers. My iMac has Firewire and USB. The MBP has USB and Thunderbolt. USB to USB doesn't seem to work.Â
What cable should I buy to do this? Firewire to Thunderbolt? Firewire to USB? USB to Thunderbolt?

Apr 12, 2012i just switched to the Mac a few days ago and i'm just trying to get my bearings in OS X. on Win7 i used a free program called 'syncback' that allowed me to select folders which would be automatically copied at a certain time interval to a USB thumb drive. i just want to backup my firefox profile folder so i can back it up and put it a USB thumb drive every 45 minutes or so. syncback isn't available on the mac so i was wondering what else was available.Â

Jan 14, 2011Perhaps its just me being tired, as it seems there should be simple solutions to both of these problems, but I can't find them.
1) I got a new HD, and had it connected to my MacBook and MacBook Air one at a time to do an initial Time Machine backup. However, now I've connected it to my Time Capsule, and pointed them to the same partitions that they backed up to earlier - and they can't see the older backups. Is it possible to get them to see it and only start an incremental backup?
2) I'm also trying to mirror my iTunes library on the new hard drive, but all the methods I've tried so far (ie a couple of Automator actions and various apps) have either failed, or haven't worked properly (one has added several thousand '..DS_Store' files to the folder which aren't there even when I view hidden files!
Mac Mini :: Backup From Within Recovery Mode?
Apr 29, 2012Is there a way to backup to time machine within recovery mode? My machine is really hosed and will not stay up for more then a minute or so before the beach ball of death takes over.Â
I was going to do a reinstall, but it will not unless I wipe the disk. My existing TM backup is corrupt, so I can't use that after the reinstall.Â
My (apparent) only option is to backup from within the recovery mode, but it (apparently) only gives the option to restore. Â

I use my thumb drive to keep documents for my classes, like java files for my programming class or papers etc. It would be fantastic to be able to just plug my flash drive in and if I have added a document into certain folders it will copy those files onto my flash drive.

OS X :: Cannot Restore My Documents Folders From Time Machine Backup
Sep 2, 2009Did a fresh install of SL on my iMac. So far, so good.
Go to my Documents folder, enter time machine, choose the files in my Documents folder and click restore. Exits out back to my desktop, enter my password and it starts to copy over the files. But then suddenly stops. And only copies over a small number of files and empty folders. When trying to restore just the files in some of the folders I get an error that says I don't have permission to access these files. Don't have permission? Says who and why?
So I go in via finder to the backup, select all the files in my Documents, and manually drag them over to my Documents folder. Same thing happens.
The files are a couple hundred mb. But can't figure out why they don't all copy over. Weird thing is I didn't have this problem with files from other locations like restoring my iPhoto library.

Oct 13, 2009I just have about 10 folders to backup and have been trying to make a shell script that I can run and backup the folders to my external. Right now I am just using the cp command to: cp -r /folder1 /folder2 /folder3 /backuplocation
I realize this is a very crude way to backup files, and I am wondering if there is a better/more efficient way to do this? Also, is there a way to have the script print it's progress so far? Kind of like a percentage or estimated time left in the terminal window? You are probably wondering why I just don't use a backup program, but I am using this a learning experience, too.

Feb 12, 2012When my iMac comes out of sleep (overnight), I get a "backup failure" error as the machine tries to do a backup. I try performing a backup manually and it fails as well. I tried removing the drive to have it detect again and I get another error that it cannot perform the ejection process, because it may be in use. I have to force quit/eject. After reattaching the drive, the backup performs with no problems.

Mar 15, 2012I'm trying to do a favour for a friend. She has a 320Gb external WD hard drive which she used on her Macbook to backup with Time Machine. It is not partitioned and she keeps the "Backups.backupdb" folder with other personal folders she throws in there. Recently she sold her Macbook and all that was left was this hd. She now only has access to her work pc but it won't recognize her hd as she's apparently formatted it with option "Mac OSX Journaled". So she gave me her hd to backup and then format to FAT32.Â
I've been a Mac for a long time but have never used Time Machine, I simply copy my important files into an external hd as I feel it's cleaner and I've never really had HD problems with any Macs I owned. So basically I have no idea how this works. I managed to copy all of her personal folders into my hd as well as the one labeled "Latest" on the Backups.backupdb folder ("Latest" is actually an alias). But I can't seem to be able to copy the rest of the backup folders. I can copy them into my computer hard drive, but each folder (I'm talking about the ones labeled with dates, there are 35 of them) is around 70Gb. Now, of course that doesn't make any sense, as it would be impossible to have 35 folders of 70Gb each in a 320Gb hd. I can only assume they use aliases as well, but when I try to copy them individually or as a whole (enclosing folder) Finder says I have no space available for that (even though I have more than 320Gb available).Â
Now, in my mind it's completely idiotic to keep any folders other than the Latest one. She doesn't even own a Mac anymore. But she's freaking out that I'm going to lose her entire life (she's that kind of person). I don't want to open the Time Machine app because like I said I don't use it on my computer and these are not my files, so I do not in any way want to sync with this hard drive or backup to it. I'm on a 21" 500Gb iMac running 10.7.3.Â
Intel Mac :: Gray Screen On Start Up - Backup Files Using Safe Mode?
Mar 8, 2012I'm getting the gray screen when I startup. I tried using the install disc to repair the utility, but it said it cannot be repaired. I had to use a plug-in mouse instead of my normal wireless mouse to get the startup disc out on a restart. I want to now startup in safe mode, but holding down shift during startup with my wireless keyboard doesn't work. Do I need to have a plug-in type keyboard for this function to work? Can you backup files using safemode?

Aug 28, 2010One day I was using my MBP open and external monitor hooked up. Everything was fine until the internet went down suddenly while I was using iChat.
My airport wouldn't see a network and after a couple restarts and a few resets my airport finally connected to my network. Once connected it would only issue a self-assigned IP, which obviously wouldn't work.
I was able to get around this by manually entering in the correct info but the speeds were low at best, usually pausing and stalling every minute.
After frustratingly trying get it to work, I entered clamshell mode because there was no reason at the time to have dual monitors. Once I did, viola, the airport kicked in and started working full force. It's been this way for about a month now.
My laptop is a MacBookPro5,1 with a 2.8 GHz processor and 4 GBs of RAM.
I've read that airports will have serious degradation issues if overheated and while that may be the issue, it doesn't seem to be the case.
I have smcFanControl installed and the MBP seems to be relatively cool to the touch. The fans never seem to be loudly kicking in and I have it raised on a fan powered cooling pad.
I do, though, use pretty much every port on my MBP. External monitor, speakers, both USBs, and firewire 800 are all in use, so maybe this is a resource issue or a very area specific heat issue.

Aug 28, 2009I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??
