MacBook Pro :: Wifi Reception Is Terrible / Constant Wifi Dropouts?

Apr 27, 2010

My 2010 15" MBP has constant Wifi dropouts, sometimes minutes at a time. Sometimes I have to reconnect. Yet it gets 4 bars. My MacBook never had these problems. It's generally slower, too. It's now useless for online video like Hulu. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether it's hardware (e.g. they moved the antenna, and/or because of the metal case) or software/drivers? I'm going to submit feedback after input from ya'll.

MacBook :: Will Old Titanium Running 10.3 Be Able To Connect To Wifi With A Usb Wifi Antenna?

Mar 7, 2012

I have a pretty old Titanium Mac Book that runs OS 10.3.9.  It's a moderately slow machine, but still works-  and although I realize that it won't be able to stream video or anything, I figure it would work for email, and basic web browsing-  But I'm wondering if it's going to be compatible with any new products such as a USB wifi antenna - because the room where I want to use it won't alow for an ethernet connection-   Also, will the old 10.3.9 OS allow me to connect wifi to the newer airport extreme base stations?

MacBook :: Won't Work With Wifi Network / Drops Wifi

Jan 10, 2011

MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.

Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.

So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.

Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.

AIRPORT says the following in System Profiler.

configd plug-in:6.2.3 (623.2)
System Profiler:6.0 (600.9)

MacBook :: Mac But Not PC Slow On Wifi

Jun 23, 2009

I have an aluminum Macbook on a wireless network. My network is configured as follows: In the area covered by the AP, I have the Macbook and an old, busted PC. The PC works fine, and internet is as fast as if it was plugged in. The mac says it has full signal, but the internet speed varies greatly. This Macbook tends to show full bars even when the signal is weak, though. Sometimes it loads pages fast, sometimes, it takes almost a full minute to load pages. While I haven't tested it on many other networks, it appears to work fine elsewhere. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? It's almost as if the Macbook isn't connecting to the AP and is connecting straight to the main router which is far away. As I was typing this post, the Macbook completely lost wifi signal.

MacBook :: How To Connect Wifi

Sep 16, 2009

I have the original 1st generation Core Duo MacBook, and I'm having some trouble with the wifi. Often, when I go to a new location like to a library or a friend's house, I won't be able to connect to the wifi (it will timeout) or it will connect, but the signal strength will be very weak or the internet will be very slow.

It's not that it's out of range, I'm in an area that's known to have wifi and others around me can pick it up fine with full strength. At home, my wifi works fine, but the router is in the same room I use the computer in.

MacBook Pro :: Wifi Won't Connect To Anything

Feb 29, 2012

My Macbook Pro has been great since I got it last June.  Recently I just did an software update that I believe included something with the wifi/airport setting.  Now I cannot connect to ANYTHING.  My work wifi network I can connect with my iPhone and others have connected to my "puck" wifi from CLEAR.  I have ruled out that the connections I am trying to connect to are the problem.  When I try to connect with my MBP I it tries and then gets greyed out in the top with the exclamation point.  It says:

Alert: No Internet Connection

When I have tried to "fix" using the normal processes when clicking on it it says it cannot help me.  I have researched and cleared the network settings in the keychain access.  There was another thing that said to delete the apps.apple.alf.pfile or something like that but when I went to the area in Library/Preferences that file didnt exist.  I need my Macbook to access the Internet.

I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 It is a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3

MacBook Air :: It Won't Connect To Wifi

Apr 4, 2012

I have a MacBook Air that is refusing to connect to the home network. The MacBook is a late 2011 model 3,1 core 2 duo, 4Gb RAM 128Gb SSD connecting to a virgin media super hub. Tried the hub with and without enabled security. Sometime the MacBook sees the hub when you try to connect it immediately errors with could not join..... A network timeout occurred.  The Bluetooth seems to be just as flaky. Won't connect to my iPhone?Thinking the wifi/Bluetooth card may be dodgy.

MacBook Pro :: Keep Wifi On/off For Shutdown?

Apr 4, 2012

i was wondering what the general consensus was for turning wifi on and off. i normally shut down my MBP during the night, and turn my wifi off as well.

is it worth to turn the wifi off at all, or can i just leave it on?

the reason i ask is because it would be nice to just power on and have it set up without taking the extra (5 seconds) to turn it on.

MacBook Pro :: Wifi Will Not Turn On?

Apr 17, 2012

MY wi-fi will not turn on. It was functioning just fine when I shut down, now it will not turn on, the system status is "off" and when the button is selected to turn Wi-Fi on it will highlight but not respond. The Network Diagnostic requests the Wi-Fi to be turned on when the box is checked the Wi-Fi still remains off. The Network Diagnostic then runs continuously.

MacBook Air :: Can Connect To Wifi On 801.11g Only?

May 31, 2012

I have a MacBook Air. WIFI has been working just fine, until yesterday, after I turned it off to use a LAN network via USB adapter. Ever since I have not been able to reconnect via WIFI, and I get the message (that a lot of people get) of "wifi has the sel-assigned IP address and will not connect to the Internet." I've tried restart, shut-down and wait, tossed preferences, removed preferred networks, renewed DHCP Lease, all repeatedly, but to no avail.

the strange thing was, today I was somewhere that had 801.11g and 801.11n networks, and I was able to connect on the g network, but not on n. And what was more strange, was that the same Ethernet Lan connection I used yesterday no longer allows me to connect to the Internet, even though the sidebar says Ethernet was connected and showed green light.

At the same time my iPhone and iPad can both connect to any of the networks.

MacBook Pro :: It Can't Connect To WiFi

Jun 13, 2012

Just bought my daughter a 13.6" 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro, and it connects fine to my Apple TimeCapsule in 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz mode with no issues using DHCP. However, when my daughter brings the laptop to her mother's house, and attempts to connect it to her Cisco 2Wire160 (802.11g using WEP) router with DHCP, it doesn't connect. She can select the router, but it doesn't prompt for a password.

When she goes into System Preferences -> Network, WiFi say something about a self-assigned IP address of 169.x.x.x., when that router is chosen.

If I have her delete the router from Advanced in the Preferred Network section, and then connect to any of the neighbor's routers, she's immediately prompted for a password. Attempting to re-connect to the 2Wire160, still doesn't prompt for a password.

MacBook Pro :: Why Does It Keep Disconnecting From WiFi

Dec 8, 2014

After downloading Yosemite, my computer (macbook pro) keeps disconnecting my home wifi.  I had no problems with my wifi before and my roommates have no problems with it still (they do not have macs).  This is only happening at home though, when I go anywhere else, my wifi stays connected.  I have tried deleting/forgetting my wifi network and reconnecting, restarting my computer, i searched through my settings but I don't know what to do. It disconnects like every two minutes. When it disconnects and i go to reconnect, the wifi is still there and has full bars, my computer just doesn't stay connected to it.

MacBook :: Can't Print Using WIFI

Dec 5, 2014

I can't get my new MacBook Air (OSX 10.9.5) to print using WIFI.  I have a cable modem from Comcast, which also works as a router.  I have no problem connecting to the internet.  The printer is set up for the correct network and the network key has been entered and accepted.  The printer appears in System Preferences, but it says it is offline.  If I try to print, it says it is not connected.  (The printer software has been updated).   If I connect the printer using a USB cable, it prints fine.  I need to be able to print using WIFI
