Hardware :: CD / DVD Disks Suddenly Not Recognized

Jan 28, 2010

I had just backed up my hard disk (on a G4 desktop, Sawtooth model, running OS 10.4.11) to a LaCie drive with Carbon Copy Cloner, which has never been entirely happy doing that. (Long story, maybe not relevant.) Having had several reports of failure to simply do an incremental backup, I decided to try copying the whole of Macintosh HD to the LaCie. Tried that and once again, CCC complained that it couldn't do the job completely and suggested that I click on the box next to the instruction to bypass (ignore?) files on the LaCie that were not on the Mac HD. There still were some errors, but I decided that was good enough. (I had done all the diagnostics for the permissions and disk before starting CCC.) Then I wanted to burn the contents of either my Macintosh HD or the LaCie (now presumably identical)to a DVD/RW disk. I started by making a new Burn Folder after checking out how to do it in Mac Help, but the DVD/RW disk I put into my external HD didn't show up on the desktop.

I tried a CD-R disk. That didn't show up, either, nor did a commercially prepared disk. All this for a drive that I used only a day or two ago with total success. I switched the Firewire cable to another Firewire outlet on my G4, unplugged the device for a while, put the power cord of the external drive into another outlet, everything I could think of. And I ditched the DVD player preference file. I used Disk Warrior and checked the permissions with Disk Utility. I verified the hard drive with Disk Utility, too, and it passed with flying colors. All to no avail. Of course, I can't clean the lens, because that requires that the device recognize that it has something inside. I can't use the internal device that came in my Mac for burning disks: It only deals with DVD-ROM, I believe, and I know it can't write CDsthough I can play CDs and DVDs in it.

- Do you think I did something when I was studiously trying to set up a burn folder for the contents of my drive? (I also investigated disk images and such, but I don't think I clicked on anything.)
- Could it be owing to my strange odyssey with Carbon Copy Cloner, which definitely disapproved of some of what was on my hard drive?
- Do you think there is anything I can try to repair this problem? I don't know whether my Mac isn't recognizing the device or the disk, or the device is not recognizing that it has a disk inside. I certainly can hear the thing turn on and hum busily, but it doesn't make that comforting clicking sound that one gets when a drive is preparing to do its thing with a disk.

I considered booting up from my Tiger OS disk (after I had discarded my Finder pref to deal with another problem), but I really don't know what I would want to do with it, nor whether the problem is with my external SuperDrive or with some software. Any ideas, anyone? This was so sudden that it could well be owing to either source. Or to Carbon Copy Cloner (which is unlikely).

MacBook :: Suddenly Won't Recognize External Hard Drive

Sep 9, 2014

I am using an Intenso 2,5" MemoryStation as an external hard drive. I have a few folders with pictures on it and my TimeMachine. When I plug it in it would usually show up on my desktop and start backing up my hard disk automatically. Something has now changed.

My dad gave my Macbook a new hard disk with more storage. When he put it in, he first safety copied all my stuff onto a separate external hard drive - ie. not my own. My Macbook is working perfectly and looks and acts exactly like before. But when I plug in my external hard drive, it now doesn't show up, neither on my desktop nor in disk utility. I can see that the external hard drive is responding as a light switches on and off when I plug it in and out; I don't think it is broken as I have taken very good care of it.

I'm worried that I have formatted my external hard drive so that it will only respond to a (now old) backup of my Macbook, which I can't access from my new hard disk.

I do also have the external hard drive that my dad originally used to backup all my stuff - with the older backup. Is there a way I can have my external hard drive read the new external hard drive (with the old backup of my Macbook)?

I was trying to burn a new cd and before I used the application I had inserted a blank disk which my computer didn't recognize. When I tried the application to burn the burn folder, I got a message to insert a blank disk. I tried using the Disk Utility, but when I try to select the volume Superdrive, the option is dimmed. OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: IPhoto Suddenly Won't Recognize

Mar 2, 2012

OS 10.6.8; iPhoto 9.2.1; Office for Mac 2004; Excel 11.6.6.The following weird thngs suddenly happened:

1. Apps in Finders Utilities folder disappear as one goes back in time using TM's "Enter Time Machine" command. The earlier in time you go to, the fewer the apps one finds.

2. iPhoto suddenly won't recognize .JPG imports from my camera (something it's been doing for years) when the camera is hooked to the Mac via USB cable. It works OK if photos are loaded to a memory stick and then imported.

3. In Excel, the Links button is never highlighted regardless of the status of the links! You can't tell by looking whether you have active links or not!

There were more, but the technician at our local Mac Clinic fixed them. But the three above are still there. He said that he had never seen anything like it.

OS X :: System Re-installation Via Install Disks / Install Disks Not Present?

Nov 27, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo (first generation of MacBook Pro released). I run OSX 10.6.5. My disk utility has detected a problem and says I need the install disks that came with the computer. Called apple and they said I could reboot from snow leopard or the upgrade.** Problem is that I don't have any disks with me except those that came with my brand new iMac. Can I use those to reinstall the system? Is there any other way?

**They also said that after 2007, the install disks that come with computers are keyed to that specific computer so I "might" not be able to use the disk to repair.

Additionally, and I don't know if this makes a difference but I have the airport/time capsule which backs up my computer for easy restore.

OS X :: Cannot Install 10.5.4 From New MacBook Disks

Dec 29, 2008

I purchased my MacBook in August 2006 and it came with 10.4.X and I have been fine with using that OS. However, just recently (august 08) my sister purchased another Macbook. Her Macbook came with the 10.5.4 install disks. I tried to put these into my macbook just to see if for some reason apple was nice enough to allow people who purchased new macbooks to update all other macbooks they owned. However, it does not appear to work that way. Is there any way I can get the 10.5.4 Install disks to work on my macbook (purchased august 06) that is currently running 10.4.11?

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro which came with iLife 09.My MBA came with iLife 08.I'd like to do a clean reinstall on my MBA and add the 09 apps.

First, what's on what DVD? Is the OS on one DVD and all the bundled apps on the other or is there a mix of apps on both DVD's?One potential snag is that I recall reading somewhere that the MP install of OSX includes optimizations/support for Nehalem... would this screw up my MBA or would it ignore that stuff?

MacBook :: Disks Will Not Play

Apr 22, 2012

The only disk my MacBook will play is the Snow Leopard start-up / restore disk. I've gone through all options I can think of to bring the thing back to life (from full software restore and SMC) but to no avail - even tried playing disks with the mac turned upside down. It takes the disk, churns away, spits it back out - whether it's a CD or DVD. Is my last and only resort a trip to the repair centre or is there another option?

MacBook Pro :: Just Installed 10.6.3 On It And External Disks Cannot Be Seen By OS?

Jun 8, 2012

i installed 10.6.3 on my 17" MacBook Pro (updating from 10.5.8).  All my external disk drives which had all been visible to the system and accessible before the update no longer were visible to the OS. Not in the sidebar and not in the disk utility. After checking all connections etc. many reboots, resetting the pram i still am unable to see or access these disks. From there i updated to 10.6.8 but exactly the same results. i'm not sure where to go from here. i have 4 externals on 2 different  usb routers and 1 external on a firewire router. I'm considering removing the routers and trying each drive separately and directly connected to the laptop.

MacBook Pro :: It Keeps Breaking Hard Disks

Jun 13, 2012

MBP Mid 2009

Lion

8GB Ram

1TB HDD

The problem started with my MBP freezing about once per day (sometimes spinning wheel, sometimes complete unresponsiveness). After doing a hard reset, I would usually be given the grey screen with stop sign, and the machine wouldn't boot. Resetting the PRAM would fix this, and it would boot OK. This was going on for a few weeks (I did disk checks which came back fine).

Then a couple of days ago the machine froze (unresponsive), I did a hard reset but just got the chime and grey screen - no Apple logo, no spinning wheel, no stop sign. Nothing. I did PRAM and SMC resets, but still nothing. I tried booting safe, safe verbose, hardware test, single user - nothing would work; just chime and blank grey screen. So I thought my OS installation had died. But when I tried to boot to the Lion DVD, still nothing - grey screen, the DVD would spin up, then spin down to a stop. I thought it might me faulty RAM, but not having any others to try I just swapped the two pieces over. Nothing.

Then I plugged my external 500GB HDD in to the USB (which was the machine's original internal HDD) and suddenly the Lion DVD would boot. So, the internal 1TB was dead. I put the 500GB back inside, booted Lion DVD successfully, formatted the HDD and started the Lion install. This failed with an error message 'the support files can't be copied - restart to try again'. So I restarted and in disk utility it said the HDD S.M.A.R.T was failing and it had a serious fault which could not be fixed and needs to be replaced. The 500GB disk was working fine and had had very little use since being replaced by the 1TB in January this year (the 1TB was brand new in January). So it seems odd that the both decided to fail one day after each other.

MacBook Air :: SSD Disks And Size Factor In My System?

Jun 15, 2008

im thinking about getting a macbook air , and i did some research about the SSD disks ,the main thing that is making me get a macbook air , besides weight and size factor. -Faster start-up as no spin-up is required.- Typically fast random access for reading - as there is no read/write head to move. - NO NOISE - Ability to endure extreme shock, high altitude, vibration and extremes of temperature - again , because there are no moving parts.

MacBook Pro :: Can See Hard Disks In USB Enclosures / But Not Internal

May 16, 2012

I have a mid-2010 macbook pro 13". The other day, it crashed on wake-up, and would not boot. I had a OCZ Vertex SSD boot drive, and the OEM hard drive in an optibay enclosure (replaces the optical drive and used only for data). I used this setup for one year with no problems. After much troubleshooting, I found that I could see the SSD drive by booting into a recovery partition that I have on a USB stick, and putting the SSD in a USB enclosure. Then disk utility could see it, but not mount it. The label on the boot partition was "lion", but it changed to "disk1s2". I was able to repair the drive using disk utility, and then boot from it using the USB enclosure.Once booted, I could still see the OEM hard drive with no problems. So I powered down and put the SSD back inside the case and rebooted. It booted in safe mode, but it booted fine. The next time I rebooted, it would not boot. I swapped the OEM drive and the SSD drive, and then the sytem booted with no problems and I was able to use both drives.

One day later, I noticed my OEM drive was no longer mounted in OSX. I took it out, put it in a USB enclosure, and OSX could see it fine. There were no errors on the disk. I put it back in the macbook and reboot but OSX couldn't see it.So, the primary SATA port seems to be working intermittently. Three times now, a drive has stopped working on this port. Each time, I could use the drive in an external enclosure (or using the other SATA port normally used for the optical drive. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it just be the cable?I'm trying to make this computer last at least another month or so because I need to upgrade to a larger model, and am holding out for the 2012 release.

MacBook :: 2011 Will Not Restart From Install Disks

May 31, 2012

I have had problems with my macbook grey screening and having to shut down by holding down the power button (I get the screen with the instructions how to reboot in 5 different languages). When I start it up again I get the panic report from the shut down.In Utilities, Disk Utility I ran the Repair Disk and received the message that the disk was damaged and I had to do the reapir from the install disk.

So I put the install disk in (came with the laptop, 10.6) and I tried to repair the disk using the disk utility from the install disk. Two problems: when I insert the disk, restart while holding down the 'C' key, nothing happens (stays at the grey screen) until I let go of the 'C' key and then I get another Panic and have to reboot manually. So I tried inserting the install disk with the laptop already on and clicking on the disk to hopefully get to the disk utility or at least reinstall the OS, which leads to problem two: I receive the message 'Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer.' My laptop is currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
