View 4 RepliesI ran Bootcamp Assistant and assigned 20 Gb of space to windows - leaving 115 Gb free. I had defragmented my harddrive using iDefrag and then I ran the partition. Afterwards I got the common error "The Disk Cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Backup the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume." Is there a simple way to fix this problem (I have looked on the web) without having to run disk utility and format the harddrive.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo the hard drive in my MBP is partitioned into two separate partitions. One for OS X and the other for all my data. I want to install XP for some games and so I would like to use bootcamp to do so. My question is, is the drive that bootcamp will partition limited to the one with OS X already on it? Or can I use it on my other partition that has all my data.
And second, should I want to revert back and delete the windows partition, will everything go back to the way it was? Or will I have to format and re-partition anything.
So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.
I have a program that I must run on Windows as it is not supported on Mac. I have a MacBook Pro running OS X Lion 10.7.3 with a partioned drive Running Windows 7. Currently, I am rebooting to access the Windows side, but will eventually use the parallel software that is available, but baby steps first. (I am a new Mac user by the way, trying to get rid of the PC, but have found our accounting software is not supported for mac - inconceiveable I know!). So, I have an executable file that I need to launch and cant quite figure it out. I also have Boot Camp, but honestly don't have a clue what it does.

Is there any way that I could install Windows XP (for gaming purposes) via BootCamp on a already partitioned HD of my iMac? Right now I have two partitions, one being the system one and the other containing all the data. I don't have any external HD space to "maneuver" the files to, so is there a way of installing BootCamp by not repartitioning the HD?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to install windows xp using bootcamp. My disc has alredy been partitioned into two partitions (one for OSX startup and the other one for my documents etc.) when I open bootcamp assistant it says: "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." I found out that this means that my disc shouldnt be partitioned before the process, I still want to keep my old partition.

perhaps I am doing something wrong? I wanted to install Windows XP on my iMac. I previously had partitioned my Mac drives. I backed everything on these drives to my external and blew the partitions away creating my one Mac drive again.
I then ran Bootcamp, created a partition and installed XP. Everything was fine. I then partitioned my main drive and got the warning message about Bootcamp maybe not working afterwards. So I finished partitioning my Mac drive as I wanted and now I don't have the option of booting into XP through Bootcamp. When I try it just shows the Mac drive as my only boot option. I see the XP Bootcamp drive in the System Preferences startup disk area, but I assume I did something to the partition once I partitioned my Mac drives
I have a MB Pro with latest Leopard running. HD partitioned into 2. I have a Windows XP Home install CD. How can I get it up and running on my computer? Simple please as I'm not too 'techy'. If possible, it would be nice to install it onto my second partition just to keep things clean on my main one.

I am trying to install Windows 7 via bootcamp. I opened Bootcamp Assistant, and when i click continue, i get this popup.
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" The startup disk must be formatted as a single mac OS Extented volume or already partitioned by boot camp assistant for installing windows.
I click OK.. And same message reappears
I cannot go ahead.
I have my 1 TB Disk partitioned as follows
500GB for Mac - Which is Mac os Extended (Journaled)
408 GB for Movies - Which is Mac os Extended (Journaled)
91 GB for Windows - Which is Mac os Extended (Journaled)
Now what do i do to get bootcamp work.
if I add another internal drive in my Mac Pro can I assume I can install Bootcamp upon itand then run PC based games and stuff.Do I have have to install Winblows to be able to do this ?Not having been involved in this before, is there an idiots guide for setting all this up anywhere ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'd like to install BootCamp & Win XP Home OEM on a dedicated drive in my MP. Depending on what the next MP specs are I may or may not upgrade in the next 6 months, or whenever the next MP is released. Could I take the BootCamp/Win XP drive and pop it in the new machine or does it have to live and die in the originally installed machine? I know you can't do this w/ Vista, but not sure what XP will do?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just installed windows 7 rc1 beta(32 bit) on my new june-2009 unibody 15'' mbp. Everything works great and I have parallels installed on my mac side so I can run both (and use bootcamp). Only problem is the windows drive shows up in osx as BootCamp so I tried changing the name from the windows side into something less obtrusive such as Windows 7. Problem is windows won't let me change the c drive title from BOOTCAMP to Windows 7. Everytime I type it in, it says "you require administrator privileges to confirm" so I click confirm but it just reverts back. Also, the audio levels in windows seem to be lower on max volume than in osx. How do I make them louder? Do I reinstall drivers?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI set up a boot camp Windows partition. Once in Windows, Partition Magic will not work in partitioning the boot camp drive. I tried from Disk Utility in OS X as well and that doesn't even let me partition the drive. Is it not possible to do? I am creating this to try to play a PC game and Fusion won't cut it. I would like to create normal partitions like I always do in Windows if possible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a partition for Windows, but I'm getting the message "disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." A poster in another thread concerning this problem said that to create a partition, Bootcamp needs continuous space or something. I do have many large files, and I had up to 3 GB free out of 180 a few minutes ago until I deleted some files to get about 58 GB. I tried partitioning with 45 GB and got the error message. I also tried lower numbers, but nothing worked. I'm assuming it's because my files are fragmented. Then I looked up defragment in the forums and found that many people are against it whether it's because it "slows down the computer" or "it is unnecessary." Now I'm in a bind because I don't want to reinstall my OS, but now I'm hearing I shouldn't defrag either.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to re-partition (i removed the first one so i could make it bigger). When i try and make a 100gb partition through bootcamp, after working for an hour, it says this:
Quote:

Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS X Extended (Journal) volume. Restore your information to the disc and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
What does this mean and how do i do this? I opened disk utility and can't work it out.
I just recently bought my first macbook pro. I had a 500 GB WD elite passport drive. I partitioned it to Mac os extended (journaled)- for time machine and FAT for windows and mac file transfer and storage. I used disk utility to partition the drive. These two drives are detected in my mac, however when I plug in the external drive into my windows- no pop up appears telling me to open files. So I go into my computer and click on the (F) drive in my case. Windows vista then proceeds to tell me the drive must be formatted before it can be used. What problem do I have. All I want is 2 partitions one for time machine and another that will allow for data transfer and storage. I have looked but cannot seem to find and answer. I have a 160 gb hard drive, what amount of space do you recommend for the time machine partition.

I was just wondering if it was possible to install Linux on a partitioned part of my internal drive just to test it. I've never used Linux, so I wouldn't know.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI partitioned my harddrive to put Windows XP on it. Then I decided I didn't want to put Windows XP on it. So I unpartitioned the harddrive using Disk Utility and my Mac shows that the hard drive is not partitioned, however, when I turn on my computer I have to hold down the "Option" button in order for me to choose to boot from the Macintosh HD. If I don't hold down the "Option" button a black screen shows up that says "Please enter a bootable disk" or something of that nature.

In mac I would use super duper or carbon copy cloner to just copy the lot onto another drive whilst making it bootable. How would I do this with the windows drive?
Can I put boot camp onto a portable/external HDD and change boot options to run the HDD on start up? I have a very new macbook (its my first mac), so don't want to start messing around with partitions etc., as I am very new to macs...
I'm also wondering if there is a Linux/Ubuntu emulator available for the mac? And if there is one, would it be possible to partition an external hardrive into three segments, one for Bootcamp, one for Linux, and one for time capsule?
I recently swapped the 500Gb WD drive out of my Macbook Pro for a 500Gb Seagate Momentus XT drive. OSX transferred across without any trouble, but despite using WinClone to backup the Bootcamp partition (running Windows 7 64-bit) I haven't been able to restore it successfully. What happens is that it appears to restore, and I get the dual boot screen when I hold down the Alt key, but on selecting Windows I end up getting a screen saying that some component or other is missing. I might choose simply to use Windows 7 under Parallels on this machine if I am faced with a full restore, since that way I can more easily backup the Windows side, and since it's running (MUCH) better since swapping drives. However, IDEALLY I'd prefer to restore my existing partition...

The idea is to copy it to an external harddrive, then onto my new internal hard drive, and be able to boot it from there. View 2 Replies View RelatedI had windows in a bootcamp partition for a while, and today, i decided to erase the partition and make a new, bigger one. I erased it just fine, but I can't make another one, it just gives me this error: Verification failed: this disk could not be partitioned. Use disk utility to repair this disk. I went to disk utility and i clicked verify disk (repair disk was not highlighted) and it gave me another error: filesystem verify or repair failed. I also repaired disk permissions with no such luck.
