Is there any way that I could install Windows XP (for gaming purposes) via BootCamp on a already partitioned HD of my iMac? Right now I have two partitions, one being the system one and the other containing all the data. I don't have any external HD space to "maneuver" the files to, so is there a way of installing BootCamp by not repartitioning the HD?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo the hard drive in my MBP is partitioned into two separate partitions. One for OS X and the other for all my data. I want to install XP for some games and so I would like to use bootcamp to do so. My question is, is the drive that bootcamp will partition limited to the one with OS X already on it? Or can I use it on my other partition that has all my data.
And second, should I want to revert back and delete the windows partition, will everything go back to the way it was? Or will I have to format and re-partition anything.
I want to install windows xp using bootcamp. My disc has alredy been partitioned into two partitions (one for OSX startup and the other one for my documents etc.) when I open bootcamp assistant it says: "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." I found out that this means that my disc shouldnt be partitioned before the process, I still want to keep my old partition.

I ran Bootcamp Assistant and assigned 20 Gb of space to windows - leaving 115 Gb free. I had defragmented my harddrive using iDefrag and then I ran the partition. Afterwards I got the common error "The Disk Cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Backup the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume." Is there a simple way to fix this problem (I have looked on the web) without having to run disk utility and format the harddrive.

Use disk utility to repair this disk." So i go to disk utility, but it won't let me hit the repair disk button. I can only hit the verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions for the Macintosh HD.

So I unpartitioned the harddrive using Disk Utility and my Mac shows that the hard drive is not partitioned, however, when I turn on my computer I have to hold down the "Option" button in order for me to choose to boot from the Macintosh HD. If I don't hold down the "Option" button a black screen shows up that says "Please enter a bootable disk" or something of that nature.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to replace the hard drive on an old 450 MHz PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics) which I bought years ago off eBay for my young child to play with. Now I'd like to use this Mac again as a sandbox for learning how to integrate OSX into Windows dominated corporate networks.
The original internal drive is a 27 GB IDE Seagate Barracuda, and I'd like to install an available 80 GB Seagate drive, which at some point had been partitioned on an Intel PC (running Windows or Linux). At first I wasn't aware that an incompatible partitioning scheme on PPC Macs might prevent this. I became suspicious only after numerous seemingly successful installs of OSX Tiger (on any 80 GB drive) the Mac would not recognize the drive (not even acknowledge its presence) after the subsequent reboot.
This was the case when attaching the drive internally. At one point I managed to execute a boot command (forgot which one) that took me to a prompt where I could select the external drive as the boot drive. However, this only worked when the drive was in an externall Firewire enclosure, AND only with the original drive still attached internally, AND I had to perform this manually at each reboot.
Finally my original drive died. Now I need to find a way to boot from the replacement drive installed internally. (Having a dozen barely used older drives available I'm too cheap to go out and buy a brand new one, especially since there's no guarantee that a new drive isn't already partitioned - and these days it's hard to find anything smaller than 160 GB anyway - the G4 only supports up to 128 GB.)
After much research I learned that the need for the proprietary Apple Partitioning Scheme (APS) on the PPC platform must be the issue. While the newer Intel-based Macs appear to come with an updated Disk Utility which provides the option to choose the partitioning method (between APS, GUID, and MBR) my original Tiger DVD does not have that option. Since this is my only Mac, and I paid dearly for the OSX Tiger upgrade a few years ago (and this Mac is only supposed to be a test environment) I am not inclined to buy another OSX disk/license at this time.
Despite scouring all the Mac forums I have not identified a practical way to get a bootable APM partition onto a hard drive once it's been spoiled with another partitioning scheme. Multiple seemingly successful OSX installs (during which I created brand new volumes with Disk Utility's Partitioning feature) end up with failure to recognize the drive upon reboot. I tried this with multiple drives from different manufacturers, although all of those drives at some point had Windows or Linux on them. ny ideas on how to wipe a MBR-partitioned drive totally clean and force APM upon
I have a MB Pro with latest Leopard running. HD partitioned into 2. I have a Windows XP Home install CD. How can I get it up and running on my computer? Simple please as I'm not too 'techy'. If possible, it would be nice to install it onto my second partition just to keep things clean on my main one.

I have a G4 Powermac dual 1.25 with a 160Gig drive which is partitioned into two. I'd like to reformat the drive as a single partition. I have booted from an OS X CD but can't find a way with Disk utilities to 'UN-partition' the drive(s).

I have three internal drives in my Mac Pro. I partitioned one into 2 volumes. On one of those volumes, I keep an older OS (10.4) along with some folders for holding video files I'm either working on or downloaded and keep for viewing. I don't know what happened but suddenly, all the files in those folders disappeared. Other folders on that volume are ok. This is not my boot drive. The missing files amount to 20 or 30 GBs. They are not in the trash. They seem to have simply disappeared. I ran disk utility to repair permissions; I booted from my install disk and repaired all; I tried making invisible files visible; I shut down and switched drive bays for the three internal drives. Still, the one drive in question, shows no signs of all the files I had on it.

I have a 500gig iMac that I have partitioned 200gig for windows xp via boot camp. hen I place my xp disc in and install xp, it only shows a 131gig hd, and not the 200gig that I partitioned. I tried this once before, and it wiped out my entire mac hd and I had to wipe out xp and reboot leopard. Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong and why xp pro only sees 131gig instead of 200gig.

My old NTFS hard drive (salavaged from my old PC and in an external hard drive caddy) has two partitions but when I plug it in to transfer my data, it only recognises one of the partitions? (unfortunately the smaller, less useful one. Of course.

Apple suggested partitioning my drive--does anyone else think that this will work or is there some other option that I have? I've thought about manually deleting certain Time Machine back ups but hate to have to do that constantly.

I partitioned the drive so that 250GB was for Time Machine and the rest for my media. After selecting the drive in the Time Machine preferences, it started to make the backup. Although instead of having two drives now on my desktop, I have a third on titled "Backup of Craig...MacBook Pro." If I click into that drive, the backups are there. If I click into the other Backup hard drive on my desktop, there is a dmg fine in it called "Craig C's MacBook_002332d68658.sparse bundle"

I'm trying to create a partition for Windows, but I'm getting the message "disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." A poster in another thread concerning this problem said that to create a partition, Bootcamp needs continuous space or something. I do have many large files, and I had up to 3 GB free out of 180 a few minutes ago until I deleted some files to get about 58 GB. I tried partitioning with 45 GB and got the error message. I also tried lower numbers, but nothing worked. I'm assuming it's because my files are fragmented. Then I looked up defragment in the forums and found that many people are against it whether it's because it "slows down the computer" or "it is unnecessary." Now I'm in a bind because I don't want to reinstall my OS, but now I'm hearing I shouldn't defrag either.

I just recently bought my first macbook pro. I had a 500 GB WD elite passport drive. I partitioned it to Mac os extended (journaled)- for time machine and FAT for windows and mac file transfer and storage. I used disk utility to partition the drive. These two drives are detected in my mac, however when I plug in the external drive into my windows- no pop up appears telling me to open files. So I go into my computer and click on the (F) drive in my case. Windows vista then proceeds to tell me the drive must be formatted before it can be used. What problem do I have. All I want is 2 partitions one for time machine and another that will allow for data transfer and storage. I have looked but cannot seem to find and answer. I have a 160 gb hard drive, what amount of space do you recommend for the time machine partition.
