Jan 31, 2010I have an acer 20" lcd and it has dvi-d, is that causing issues with the mac mini or is the logic board probably bad? it works on every other unit i plug it to.

Mar 28, 2009Just a warning, I bought a Mac Mini (2009) and wanted it to hook it up to my TV. My TV does not have HDMI or DVI inputs so I bought a Mini DVI to Video adapter from Apple.But I could not get it to work, then I googled for it and it seems this adapter does not work with 2009 Mac's since it does not output an analog signal anymore!

So anyone that wants to hook up his new Mac to an older TV set with the Video adapter, you are warned.I guess i'll have to buy a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and then a VGA to SVIDEO converter..

A lot of mkv or avi files I playback appear pretty choppy in VLC - my primary app for watching movies and tv shows.
I have a Drobo with two 2 TB SATA drives where I store all my stuff and which is connected to my mini via firewire 800.
I've tried playing the same video back from both the Drobo and from the internal hard drive, to see if the choppiness was on account of the external drive or not. No difference really. A choppy video remains choppy from either place.
It's pretty strange because some 1080p videos play just fine, with no choppiness whatsoever, while other 720p videos or even standard definition divx files are still choppy.

Sep 12, 2010I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.
I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.
Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.
I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

Apr 6, 2009I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.
Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

Mac Mini :: Using Both Video Outputs
Apr 13, 2012I am using both video outputs on the back of the mini, VGA and HDMI. Thes VGA is running to a projector and the HDMI is running to a computer monitor. I am also running Bootcamp WINDOWS 7. When I power up the Mac, the computer monitor goes to sleep and defaults to the projector as the main monitor. If I power on the projector first, before powering the computer on and then power the MAC on, it recongnizes the computer monitor as the default monitor. Why can't the MAC mini recognize the computer monitor(HDMI) as the default when both video outputs are connected?

Mar 4, 2009I recently have gotten into video, such as downloading .mkv files from Vuze, and .mov and .avi files from various other places. Now that I will be purchasing a Mac mini I hope to watch movies from the iTunes Store. One of the things I hated about my Power Mac G4 500 is that it's slow processor could only play about 45 percent of the videos I had. The rest of the videos I tried either the audio and video would either out of sync, just sputter along, or refuse to play at all. Will the 2.0Ghz processor of the new Mac minis be sufficient for video, or do I need to go with the 2.26 Ghz processor offered in the "build-to-order" option?

Mar 16, 2009I received my new mac mini last week and installed a few things on it over the weekend so that I can run it as an HTPC. Works great but I am having one issue and that is with the video signal. I have the mac mini connected to my Samsung 720p LCD TV with VGA using Apple's miniport to vga adaptor.
When the TV is already turned on and I start the mini or bring the mini out of sleep then everything works OK. However if the TV is off and I start the mini or bring it out of sleep and then turn on the TV, I get a "no video signal" message.

Nov 8, 2009I have an '07 vintage (DVI) Mac Mini I use as a media center. I haven't used it in a few months & its been shut down during that time. I went to start it up today & the power light went on & I could hear the fan start up but no start-up chime & no video.
I did an PMU reset to no avail. I'm thinking the logic board is done (it's under warranty & I have an appt. with a "genius" tomorrow). Just wondering if there is anything else I should try before I bring it in.

I haven't used it for two years.Today I attempted to plug it into my new MacMini running Lion 10.7.3 -- and quickly discovered I did not have the correct Firewire cable. The MacMini needs this newest mini input IEEE1394b Firewire 800 port Mbps 8 pin.My Sony GV-D1000 has an output i.LINK DV Interface IEEE1394a 400 Mbps 4 pin I dashed to the store and bought a cable with those connectors. Rocketfish RF-AP309 from Best Buy. Crud!! The MacMini cannot see the Video Walkman. I tried connecting, re-connecting… turning the Walkman off/on. Restarted the MacMini. Nothing. Tried this with my latest version of iMovie '11 -- and with iMovie HD vers 6.0.3. Neither video softwares can see the Sony GV-D1000. OK, Plan B:I pulled out my MacBook Pro 17" early 2008 (purchased new March 2008) running Lion 10.7.3.The new firewire cable just purchased will not work plugged into the MBP….. Next I grab a 400 Mbits FireWire IEEE 1394a. Plug that into the MPB and the other end into the Walkman. It works! It peforms well with both video software's. But… I want to work on the new MacMini. Would I have purchased a defective cable? Or is there something about the MacMini that won't accept the signal from the Sony GV-D1000?

May 30, 2012I'm really struggling to understand why my 2010 mini has trouble playing some QT videos that my 2006 mini handles just fine! The two machines are:
Macmini 1.1 (1.83 GHz)
intel Dual Core
Memory 2GB
Bus Speed: 667
Graphics Card GMA 950
VRAM: 64MB

The problem first presented itself as I am working on a generative video installation using Max6. I've used the older mini for the installations for some time with very few issues. I've been using the newer mini for video processing, compression, and editing and making DVDs and blu-ray disks. No issues there that I have noticed either. However, when I recently tried to use the newer mini to run the generative video, I noticed that several of the videos were stopping and then starting up again (skipping). I know that Max can sometimes have trouble with videos due to processing issues - but why would it work fine on the older, less powerful machine and only have issues on the newer one?
To begin troubleshooting, I ran one of the videos in Quicktime on the newer mini to see if similar issues arose, and they do. No problem on the older mini. The video is formatted in DVCPRO50 anamorphic format, and I am using the same monitor in both cases (1440x900,60Hz), connected by VGA to the monitor PC input. I know that Quicktime can have similar issues with very large files sometimes, but I still don't see why the newer machine stumbles with the same video that runs fine on the older one.
I've been hoping to start using higher resolution videos in this work, but am worried that if a newer machine can't handle these SD videos, HD will be worse. I like the minis for installations because of their small size and portability.
Mac Mini :: Importing Video From Camcorder To IMovie?
Dec 5, 2010I'm sitting here trying how to figure out how to transfer video off this camcorder I have to my computer so I can edit the footage. It's my friend's camera so I'm not familiar with it at all. It has a cassette tape in which the video was recorded onto. The camera also has a USB connector. So I figured my computer would simply recognize that the camera was connected and I could get footage from the camera to the computer that way but it didn't work. camera is a Panasonic PV-GS35, for reference.

Nov 6, 2007I'm a Windows user and I recently bought a Mini C2D 1.83 to plug in to my LCD TV. The Mini is running Leopard and it's connected to the TV via DVI, 1360x768, millions of colors, the works. Everything's set up with QuickTime + Front Row + iTunes + DivX + AC3 (AC52). I dropped aliases for my Lacie NAS drive in the 'Movies' folder so that I can access my movies via Front Row. So far so good. It's a slick setup and I'm loving it.
There's just one headscratcher (and tentative dealbreaker) that bugs me... why does all video look like crap? The same movies that looked gorgeous when played back on the same TV from my retired WinXP media machine, now look like bad YouTube videos on the Mac. All dark areas are blocky as hell -- what's supposed to be black (or thereabouts) looks more like 'Turd Tetris' (a bunch of huge squares in various flavors of brown)..............

Apr 21, 2009After reading some of the threads here with people being very happy with their minis, I decided to head down to the Apple store and give it a go. I used each of the computers (a Mac mini, Mac Pro, and iMac) for about 10 minutes (which seems like forever when you are in a crowded retail store) doing things I would normally be doing at home. The iMac was fine, as expected. It handled just about everything with satisfactory speed, even thought it was the base 24" model with no fancy processors or graphics.

The Mac Mini though was quite disappointing. To render a 1 minute video in iMovie it took around 4 minutes. The Mac Pro did the job on the same exact movie (sample file found on every display computer) in about 45 seconds. Another big difference was apparent, while the movies were rendering, the Mac Pro was completely responsive and I was able to load iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Safari, and iTunes. Each opened up within seconds, and each interface was running smoothly as if nothing was happening in the background (granted for a short period as the movie finished rendering quickly).............

But I have serious problems with it. I have bought a Dvi to component video cable on eBay but it doesn't work with mac mini(it works with old PC).
OS X :: HD Video 720p Mp4s Choppy On Mac Mini
Nov 19, 2009Earlier this year, I finished ripping nearly every single one of my DVDs and Blu-rays (I only have a handful of the latter) so that I can play them off of my Mac Mini instead of having to load the DVD player every time I want to see a different movie.
On the Mac Mini 1.83 gHz C2D with 2gb of RAM and GMA950 graphics, I had no issues with the 480p videos in Front Row, but the high-def rips from the Blu-rays were very jerky, even though I downconverted them to 720p. I just upgraded to a 2.0 gHz C2D with 2gb of RAM and the nVidia 9400M graphics. Most of the 720p videos play well now, but a couple of them (Iron Man, particularly) are still a bit jerky in places.
Would upgrading again to a 2.26 gHz or a 2.53 gHz Mac Mini fix this issue? Do I just need more RAM? Does anyone have any advice?

But in the mean time while using the mini I'd like to run my 30" dell at native res, and a 24" dell at native res. Would the vid card on the mini handle this? I don't intend gaming or doing anything hugely graphic intensive.

Feb 28, 2010At this moment, I have my Mac mini encoding video with HandBrake for iTunes. In iStat Pro in Dashboard, it says that my CPU is 204 degrees Fahrenheit! Is this normal? I get that video encoding is CPU intensive. But why would the fan only stay at 1500 RPM and not kick up to keep the processor cool? The area around the fan is scalding hot in the back, also.
