Mac Mini :: Importing Video From Camcorder To IMovie?
Dec 5, 2010
I'm sitting here trying how to figure out how to transfer video off this camcorder I have to my computer so I can edit the footage. It's my friend's camera so I'm not familiar with it at all. It has a cassette tape in which the video was recorded onto. The camera also has a USB connector. So I figured my computer would simply recognize that the camera was connected and I could get footage from the camera to the computer that way but it didn't work. camera is a Panasonic PV-GS35, for reference.

so I recently bought a Canon HD Camcorder 1080p with 32GB SD Card. After I am done shooting videos I have two programs to choose from: Final Cut Pro 2 and iMovie '09. It seems that Final Cut Pro does not import from Camcorders, so I have been using iMovie.
Once I start importing, it asks me if I want the movie in full 1920x1080 HD. I selected yes. Once I am done importing into iMovie, I want to export it to .mp4 in High Def but the only options iMovie gives me to export is iDVD, iTunes, YouTube and Mobile Me Gallery and none of those formats are in High Def.
How can I export my videos to .mp4 in full 1920x1080 format?

My daughter recorded something on iMovie, but she wanted to import some video she took from our camcorder. She put the video on a DVD but she can't seem to drag the video onto her existing iMovie.
I called Apple's support service and they suggested I try loading the video directly from the camcorder but they couldn't help me with that as it's not an Apple product (the camcorder is a: Sony) They suggested to put the camcorder on some type of mode that the computer could recognize????
The other suggestion they made was to get a third party application that can "rip" the images from the DVD so it can be imported into iMovie. Again, they couldn't help me because it's not their product.
I'm not very really familiar with any of these things so I was hoping someone would be willing to help me figure it.

I have just got my first mac and I am really enjoying it so far. I am trying to import video files from the hard drive in to iMovie, the video clips were captured using a Panasonic lumix tz7. I think the format is AVCHD or m2ts? , and my Mac is a macbook pro 17inch i5. Is there something I could be doing wrong or some software that I needed when I purchased my computer (when I purchased it from the apple store the genius's said that format was compatible).

Is there a way I can crop my movies before importing it into iMovie. I have a long video on my recorder and I only need like 30 seconds of it, I don't want to have to import the whole movie (it's HD, so it'll take a while). Is there a quicker way to do this? If iMovie can't, just out of curiosity, can more advanced programs like Premiere Pro or FCE/FCP do this?

I'm using a rather old version of iMovie (iMovie 3, actually) and this old dinosaur is having trouble uploading some clips I took of my screen using the trial version of Screen Record 2. I used it once before (Same program, same file format and everything!) and it worked fine, but now all of the sudden it won't accept the files.
An error Message pops up after spending however long it took to upload the file
Error During Import
The file could not be imported: (-47)
The movie also works fine in Quicktime player.

I have got a .mov file (1GB) that looks fabulous when I watch it in the Quicktime player. But when I drag it into iMovie, the quality is terrible.
At first I figured this was just because iMovie displays lower quality for editing and that the original quality would be preserved when I bring it back into Quicktime. But the quality is just as bad after compression.
No matter what I do, the final Quicktime video is atrocious. When I compress it from iMovie, Im choosing the highest quality setting to bring it into .dv format. In .dv format, the file is still very heavy, but it looks terrible. If iMovie preserved the quality (whether we see it or not), shouldnt it be visible in .dv?
I also tried exporting the .dv into mpg-4 and plenty other formats (thinking .dv may still be hiding the true quality) but that doesnt work either. Im still on an iBook G4 (PowerPC) running Mac OS X v10.4.11 and QuickTime Pro v7.4.5.

My mac mini is an i5 2.3ghz with 8 ghz RAM with a 240 GB SSD. I import and edit a lot of videos using imovies and final cut. a week or so ago final cut x started slowing down a lot and crashing and then imovie started wit hthe same simptons, i've tried reinstalling both, deleting the full .plist and preference files, i tried installing a fresh lion install and then installing just imovie and final cut and the same thing happens. does anyone have any idea of what the problem might be ? the fact that i used a fresh installation of lion and saw the same issues makes me believe it's a hardware issue but nothing else seems to slow down or have problems. Is it maybe the RAM?

I'm importing 720p HD video from my new digicam, a Panasonic DMC-ZS3. After importing the video into iMovie, the speed of replay is way too fast (2-3x normal speed). I think it may have something to do with the fact that I'm downloading 720p and somehow the progressive scan is confusing iMovie: [URL]

how I could connect my mini dv camcorder to my mac and transfer the video to the computer. My camcorder only came with cord for playback on TV and the power cord, but nothing for the computer, especially a Mac. The manual refers to a Dv cable (hURL....) and says "When using a DV cable, be sure to use the optional JVC VC-VDV206U or VC-VDV204U DV cable depending on the type of DV connector (4 or 6 pins) on the PC". Currently running Mavericks with Thunderbolt and a FireWire 800 port.

My parents bought this camcorder a few years ago, and I bought my Macbook 2 days ago. I have been very busy the past 2 days, transferring pictures, documents, etc. from my pc to my mac. I have now gotten to begin transferring videos. I had several videos on my old pc that transferred just fine, but I also had several videos on the camcorder from a recent trip to Chicago. When I connect the camcorder to my Macbook via USB cable, the files are not transferable. I can't even play them. They all end in either MOI or MOD. Can anyone give me advice on what to do? I have already tried transferring them to my old pc, and then from there to my macbook, but that isn't working for some reason.

I have a very old purple iMac, circa 2000, with an old version of iMovie. I copied the files onto a USB and tried to open/import them onto my new Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz iMac. However my new iMac with iMovie '09 won't recognise the files when I try to import them. They stay greyed, not allowing me to import them.

I just got my new iMac. I plug in my camcorder (which is FireWire 400 - but I use a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter) when I have iMovie 09 open, then I go to import video - and it only has iSight as an option! The camera is a JVC model no. GR-D850AA.

Importing videos from my camera into iMovie works fine and dandy until I hit a certain clip. From that clip on, all the movies I try to import have no audio. However, when I click "Show In Finder" on these clips that have no audio and play them in Quicktime, they have audio! So then I re-imported these videos into iMovie, and it worked! They had sound! Is this really what I'm going have to do every time I try to import my videos from my camera? Import, show in finder, RE-import?

A client sent me a jpeg to put in an iMovie. I dragged it in, but it doesn't fit. Some of the lettering is cut off on the left side of the frame. I've tried several ways to resize it, but none have been successful.

I own a Sony Handycam DCR-SR80.
It (sadly) exports in MPEG-2, and I used to convert with StreamClip.
However, I found out that when I choose to 'import from camera', iMovie converts and imports it in.
But the problem is, randomly, iMovie decides not to read my camcorder. I keep unplugging it, restarting iMovie, etc, and maybe once every 20 attempts, it reads and opens a window where I can choose which clips to import.

I cannot import .avi files into iMovie. I'm not sure what codecs were being used and I'm not sure how to find out, but I know I can open the files in QuickTime (after installing Perian and Flip4Mac), so why wouldn't it work in iMovie either?

I have a Canon Optura 20 and I wanted to know if it was possible to turn it into a webcam for use on a mac and pc? If so how do I do that? Is there some special software needed? Is there freeware out there that can do the trick? Also, would I need a firewire connection or just a usb 2.0 connection?

I want to import some clips into iMovie (not from a camera, but a file) and it just won't work! The programme goes through all the steps, but in the end there is no file in iMovie; it just says 'No matching video'. I've checked the folder where clips should go (movie events --> eventx) and the clips have been moved to there, so why won't it show up in iMovie? It's driving me mad! Do the clips have to be a certain length (i remember that in iMovie 04 they had to be under 9minutes) or do they have to be a certain format? [I've been using .avi files.]

I was able previously to import mpeg video from my Sony Cybershot into iMovie and work with it. Somehow today, I get a message saying "Can't open file. Skipping it and continuing." I tried all kinds of settings in Preferences. Recently I reinstalled my Panther OSX. Maybe that has something to do with it? Would be great if someone could point me in the right direction here.
