Mac Mini :: Importing And Editing Videos (iMovie And Final Cut X)?
Mar 26, 2012My mac mini is an i5 2.3ghz with 8 ghz RAM with a 240 GB SSD. I import and edit a lot of videos using imovies and final cut. a week or so ago final cut x started slowing down a lot and crashing and then imovie started wit hthe same simptons, i've tried reinstalling both, deleting the full .plist and preference files, i tried installing a fresh lion install and then installing just imovie and final cut and the same thing happens. does anyone have any idea of what the problem might be ? the fact that i used a fresh installation of lion and saw the same issues makes me believe it's a hardware issue but nothing else seems to slow down or have problems. Is it maybe the RAM?

Jun 2, 2010I have a very old purple iMac, circa 2000, with an old version of iMovie. I copied the files onto a USB and tried to open/import them onto my new Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz iMac. However my new iMac with iMovie '09 won't recognise the files when I try to import them. They stay greyed, not allowing me to import them.

Dec 20, 2010Is there a way I can crop my movies before importing it into iMovie. I have a long video on my recorder and I only need like 30 seconds of it, I don't want to have to import the whole movie (it's HD, so it'll take a while). Is there a quicker way to do this? If iMovie can't, just out of curiosity, can more advanced programs like Premiere Pro or FCE/FCP do this?

Aug 15, 2010Basically I am a singer songwriter and have recently starting recording myself singing and using iMovie to record and Garageband to record me singing and putting the backing track in. I have no problem importing the Garageband file into iMovie, however I cant find how to make them go in sync - for example when I start singing in the GarageBand file isn't when I start singing in the iMovie video.

Mar 29, 2010I'm running iPhoto '06 right now and I don't want it to import videos, since it never can tell that they're duplicates and thus I end up with many copies of the same thing (which is difficult to clean up, since I have to go into Finder to do it). So I have two questions:
1) Can you stop iPhoto '06 from importing videos entirely?
2) If I upgraded to iPhoto '09, would that fix the problem? As in, will it either be able to recognize duplicate videos, or allow me to stop video importing?

Mar 7, 2009I have a video that I am trying to import into iMovie '09. Its it a .MOV file. The file shows up in iPhoto, but when I go to iPhoto movies in iMovie, the file does not show up. What type of formats does iMovie let you import? Perhaps I can't import because its the wrong type of file? If so, is there a (free) way to convert the .MOV file into a file that can be imported into iMovie?

Jun 10, 2009I have got a .mov file (1GB) that looks fabulous when I watch it in the Quicktime player. But when I drag it into iMovie, the quality is terrible.
At first I figured this was just because iMovie displays lower quality for editing and that the original quality would be preserved when I bring it back into Quicktime. But the quality is just as bad after compression.
No matter what I do, the final Quicktime video is atrocious. When I compress it from iMovie, I�m choosing the highest quality setting to bring it into .dv format. In .dv format, the file is still very heavy, but it looks terrible. If iMovie preserved the quality (whether we see it or not), shouldn�t it be visible in .dv?
I also tried exporting the .dv into mpg-4 and plenty other formats (thinking .dv may still be �hiding� the true quality) but that doesn�t work either. Im still on an iBook G4 (PowerPC) running Mac OS X v10.4.11 and QuickTime Pro v7.4.5.

Jan 21, 2010I wonder if someone could help me out on this. I've imported a lot of DV footage from my DV recorder to imovie and it has generally worked pretty well. Some of it came up with wrong dates, and I was able to follow instructions to get it to the right date.I recently purchased a Contour HD 1080P full on helmet camera for skiing/downhill biking. I got it just before my first ski trip and just took it out and recorded. It doesn't have many controls, and I didn't think that the date might not be set, and it wasn't, needs to be set by connecting it to the computer and setting it. So, it records 1080P in quicktime .mov files.. well .mov files anyway. When I import them to imovie, keeping full resolution, it takes ages. And the result is a directory full of .mov files again.

Apr 22, 2009I'm in the process of making a presentation in iMovie, and I am using photos and movies from iPhoto. The pictures work just fine, but I can not get my videos to import into iMovie. I've tried restarting both iPhoto and iMovie, and I've had no luck. The files are .mov, which I know are compatible with iMovie because I've used them before. However I did a test video and it was MPEG-4, and that imported just fine into iMovie. So it appears it may be a format issue but I've used .mov in the past so that has me stumped. I could re render the video in MPEG-4, but the video was a rendering of the whole building in HD, so it took about 24 hours to render, so I don't want to do that again. If I do have to convert it, what program can I use to convert it?

I have dozens of avi format videos imported from my point and shoot digital camera in the iPhoto library and iMovie used to be able to see them. Not any more. It now recognizes only a handful from a couple of years back.

Aug 12, 2007I've takes some videos with my digital camera. When I connect it to my Mac, iPhoto opens up and imports them, and I have all the videos in their own event.
When I open up iMovie 08 to edit these clips, they do not show up in the event library under iPhoto videos.

It (sadly) exports in MPEG-2, and I used to convert with StreamClip.
However, I found out that when I choose to 'import from camera', iMovie converts and imports it in.
But the problem is, randomly, iMovie decides not to read my camcorder. I keep unplugging it, restarting iMovie, etc, and maybe once every 20 attempts, it reads and opens a window where I can choose which clips to import.

Jul 19, 2010I cannot import .avi files into iMovie. I'm not sure what codecs were being used and I'm not sure how to find out, but I know I can open the files in QuickTime (after installing Perian and Flip4Mac), so why wouldn't it work in iMovie either?
