Mac Mini :: Can I Use The Mini To Download Netflix Streaming Movies?
Oct 19, 2010
I have an older Mac mini, model A1176, 2005. I haven't upgraded to OS 10 yet, but I bought a family pack, and I can do that if I need to. Can I use the mini to download Netflix streaming movies? It has a CD slot; can I use it to play DVDs? My tv is also older, just a plain tv (no HD, no blueray) but it has a red-white-yellow port.
If I can do these things, what do I need to buy, and what do I need to do?

I have purchased a new entry level mac mini with 8 gigs of memory. Can the intel 3000 hd handle netflix hd? Also, I am planning on running the mini mac under windows 7 ultimate unless someone has a suggestion for equal to windows media player. I have a usb dvr (with cable card) that allows me to record channels while out on work or out and about during the weekend?

How does your MBA 11 or 13 do streaming netflix, and what are your brightness settings and battery times like?

I'm looking for a Streaming box to go in my living room with only a few parameters
1) It streams Netflix
2) It can be connected to external hard drives for movies (mp4) & music (aac)
I'd like to keep spending to a minimum. Is there anything out there with these features that isn't too expensive? Blu-Ray and everything else would be welcome, but I'm looking to spend no more than $250-300.

Netflix recently announced that they will steam HD content to mac and pc users, but so far it does not work for me. I'll pick a show I know is in HD and play it, but while it shows the HD icon in the lower right, when I mouse over it the icon's pop-up displays the "allow HD button" checked and above that reads "not playing in HD"
I've tried this with several different sources with the same results. Anyone else with this problem? Is there a solution?
BTW, I meet all of Netflix's requirements for streaming to PC in HD:
Silverlight 3 or higher
A screen resolution of at least 800 x 600
A high-speed internet connection at time of playback (typically 5 Mbps or higher)

Can I install Netflix Streaming w/ no problems on my new Intel based iMac? I got the new 2009 model of the 24" iMac. Has anyone else installed and used Netflix streaming under similar circumstances with no problems? Did your Safari browser work fine with it?

I was wondering what type of cable I need if I want to hook my Mac Book Pro (the new one, 15" 2.53GHZ) to my new LG HDTV coming in tomorrow, I've never had a HDTV before and I really want to use Netflix streaming to hook up to the TV or DVD Blu Ray player which is a LG too. I couldn't afford the high dollar wireless TV's that do one, but I found a nice 47" one for $999. I just don't want to buy the wrong cord without double checking first.

I've recently begun seeing random, darkish rectangles appear and disappear while watching a streamed Netflix movie. Last night when it began happening, I disconnected my laptop and substituted a friend's, whose is almost identical to mine: hers is early 2011, mine is late 2011. Hers showed no rectangles.
Several facts:
-- viewing in fullscreen mode
-- using video mirroring to display on TV
-- using WiFi
-- latest OS and Silverlight software being used
-- no other apps open
-- both laptops are MBP 13"
Can anyone speculate as to what these randomly sized rectangles might be? Are they artifacts of video compression or streaming? Could they in any way indicate a failing video card?

This will be easier if you know my setup, so here goes:
Computers: Mac mini (not a new one) (10.5.6)
Dell XPS 410 (Vista Home Premium)
Dell Studio 540 (Vista HP x64)
Router: Belkin N+ (4 gigabit ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n)
Connection Type: Mac (AirPort to the router)
XPS 410 (Ethernet) 540 (N+ USB adapter)
Other devices: PS3 (a few more, but they're not relevant).
Here's what I want to do. I want to stream some video, maybe music, from my mini to the PS3. For free. I was thinking since the PCs can connect to the PS3, that I could use one of those a catalyst.

When using either Firefox or Safari, recently, to watch instant movies via Netflix, the browser unexpectedly closes. Sometimes it gets to the buffering stage. I've cleared all my private data (history, caches, cookies...) and redownloaded flash/shockwave. I have the most current Silverlight too.
Any ideas? It worked perfectly since I've had it (about a month or two), up until today.

I just bought my first Apple product, an i-Mac 21.5. I love it except that a loud fan turns on after streaming a movie (netflix) after about an hour. If I simply turn off the computer for 5 minutes the fan turns off and I can resume streaming without the fan. - This has happened repeatedly in the week that I've owned the i-mac. I took it back to my Apple store for a checkup and they told me nothing was wrong. - Is this normal for new i-macs?

I just got a new 2010 mini to use for some web development, as well as a media streamer for my tv. I want to be able to stream standard and HD mkv/h.264 video from either the internal HD, external HD, or my server.
Obviously, the internal HD should work well...my question is, would it be faster to stream from an external HD or my server? The server and mini are wired into the network via Gbit ethernet, and the external would be USB (or it could be FW800 if that would make a difference).I'm going to use Plex as the front-end.

with the news that Apple may allow for streaming iTunes to an iPhone anywhere from your home, i can anticipate more demand for the Mac Mini. I was looking into getting one as a music server to share my home library thru my MacBook remotely thru Hamachi. Now if I can do the same to a portable device, i am SOLD.

I always read posts of people who ask whether to get an Apple TV or Mac Mini to use as an entertainment hub. I just got a 2 ghz C2D Mini for free. I was excited because now I can put it in my closet and have it on at all times to stream to my Apple TV (Currently stream from iMac). But then I thought about it, what if I just plug the Mac Mini into the TV directly and play my content directly through it? 1. Apple TV has been great, silent, I don't hear any fans, and plays iTunes bought HD content without any problem. Can the Mac Mini handle this in the same way, and as silently? I plan on using a DVI to HDMI cable. 2. If I do use the Mac Mini, I also plan on getting rid of my DVD player, which is also silent when it plays DVDs. How quiet is the Mac Mini when it plays DVD movies? I don't need it to be silent, but I just don't want to hear it when I'm watching a movie. (I know I can try this myself, but I still haven't gotten the required cables and peripherals to try it now) 3. Based on all of the suggestions people here make when comparing Apple TV to Mac Mini is that the Apple TV is half the price. In my case, I was fortunate to have a Mac Mini land in my hands for free and I plan on either using it as a media streaming hub or plug it directly to replace the Apple TV. In this case, since money isn't an issue, which is a better option?

I attempted to google this however I got some mixed results. However I do think that most of the reviews that I was reading was from older Mac Mini models.
I want to get a Mac Mini for a Media Center for my TV. I have alot of iTunes HD TV shows and movies, as well as various Blu-Ray and Downloaded 1080p .mkv rips. I play them fine on my Mac Pro w/ VLC... was wondering how the Latest Gen Mac Mini handles it?

I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.
I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.
Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.
I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.
Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

Does anybody know why I seem to have 2 locations for movies. One is under user/movies at about 85gb, and the other under iTunes media with about 35gb.I want to free up space but am scared to delete files in case I lose some movies. I also don't know why ripped DVDs seem to be saving into 2 locations.

I am a new convert to mac and want to set up a mac media server - does anyone know if I can stream movies stored on a time capsule through the mac mini to an xbox. I know how and can stream from my mac to xbox - so that part is not problem - however the new capsule has 2 tb and would be perfect for storing movies, etc -
But the question is can you stream from it - if not directly at least through a connection from the capsule to the mini?

With my dad's MacBook pro I was able to hook it up to our HDTV using a DVI to VGA adapter, but we were never able to hook up the audio. Have any of you connected your laptops to an HDTV? If there were a video plus audio solution, that would be ideal, but I'm guessing that is not the case. So is there a cheap video adapter I can buy? My TV has HDMI, VGA, and various component inputs.
