Mac Mini :: 2010 MM Hard Drive Upgrade Level Of Difficulty?

Nov 7, 2010

I have a 2010 Mini with 8GB of RAM on the way and I'd like to hear opinions on how difficult the HD upgrade process is. I'm looking to put an Intel X-25M SSD inside. The instructions at ifixit.com seem pretty straightforward but it looks like there is very little room for error in some spots.

I'm not shy about opening any Mac or any gadget for that matter. I've upgraded the HD and RAM in all the towers I've owned, upgraded the HD and optical drive in a PowerBook G4 12" and done the Optibay swap with RAID setup in the older (non-unibody) 15" MBP. More recently, I replaced the glass screen on my shattered HTC Evo 4G.

MacBook Air :: Upgrade Hard Drive In Late 2010 Model?

Jun 22, 2012

I have a late 2010 Macbook Air, 13 inch, with the 126 gb hard drive. I was curious if there was a way to upgrade the hard drive at all. I know this isn't "officially" suported, but I've seen some compines online that claim to do it.

I haven't priced out the SSD drives or anything, so I'm not even sure if it's cost effective to upgrade.

MacBook :: Difficulty Installing 10.4 On New Hard Drive

Apr 1, 2012

So i was given a macbook Model: A1181, but without a hard drive. so i thought okay, ill go buy a hard drive. so i go to buy a hard drive, Sata, which what the computer is, and connect it. I have a copy of 10.4 laying around so i go to boot from that disc by holding down the "c" key on boot and there is the standard mac startup chime , but the screen remains white until it flashes the folder with a question mark saying that it can't find the startup disc i also tried to hold down option on boot for startup manager but all i get is a cursor and it never gets to the startup manager. How should i proceed, because i can't get the original hard drive.

PowerPC :: 12" Hard Drive Replacement Difficulty?

Feb 13, 2008

My G4 12" PowerBook hard drive is dying and needs to be replaced. I have some detailed instructions or a local Apple Authorized Repair Center that can do it for $100-$120. I have reasonable technical ability. (popping keyboard keys off doesn't sound like fun though). For those that have done this should I pay the money to have it done or give it a shot doing it myself??? (This laptop is my backup but I would like to not screw it up too badly)

Mac Mini :: MM (Mid-2010) Ram Upgrade?

Oct 1, 2010

I tried searching up this question but could not find any results.

I was watching the youtube video on the ram upgrading and I noticed that the person took out 2x 1GB ram pieces and put in 2x 2GB ram pieces.

The ram I purchased is 1x 4GB piece and I am just wondering if there would be any drawbacks for using 1x 1GB and 1x 4GB in my set-up. I remember that for PC, it's best if the RAM is the same size/speed/manufacturer. My newly purchased ram is from OWC.

Additionally, if I decide to only have 1x 4GB left in there, does it matter which slot I put it in? There are two slots that are empty and I'm not sure if there is a primary slot or secondary slot.

Mac Mini :: Installed A Kingston SSD Drive In My 2010 Mac Mini?

Aug 24, 2010

I installed a Kingston SSD drive in my 2010 mac mini. If I put the OSX install DVD (grey disc 1), the SSD is not visible in either the installer or disk utility.

The SSD is a Kingston 64 GB SATA 2.5-inch SSDNow V Series Solid State Drive. Cheap drive.

The funny thing is that before i started all this I restored a SuperDuper image of 10.6.4 from my old mini to the SSD using a usb to SATA adapter. Installed and it worked! The SSD booted OS X but the ethernet jack was not working.

Does anyone know of a workaround for installing OSX onto a drive that is not being recognized in disk utility?

I'd like to find a way to reinstall OSX using the grey DVD without having to remove the SSD drive.

OS X :: Difficulty With Reopening Files On Flash Drive?

Jul 12, 2009

I went to use my flash drive to open some old files (which were created on a pc, Word) to see if I wanted to delete them, opened several files with Word using Windows for Mac, closed out the files, went to reopen them and couldn't. The size of the files went down to zero KB after opening. I had tried to move several to the trash but I got an "error -43" code. I can't figure out why this is happening. No idea where to start.

Mac Mini :: (Fall 2010) Optical DVD Drive Doesn't Work?

May 26, 2012

I purchased this spring of 2011 and only used the drive to install the software. I had lots of other problems with kernel issues and was in and out of the Genius Store like a hen on an egg, but now I am trying to use the DVD drive and it doesn't work. It doesn't recognize any applications to open it, not Toast, not Disk Utility, and it has a hard time recognizing music CDs also. Not only does it not recognize it on the desktop, it simply spits the disk out. I purchased new DVD-RW and tried to write an .iso image to the DVD, and it won't work. Sad fact is that this is now past the warranty and I am stuck with this. The Mac Mini 2010 version was expensive, and the only reason I bought it was because of the drive because I didn't have one.

Im thinking of upgrading my MBP hard drive up to around 500GB or 1TB (5400rpm and 8 cache). I know Mac's are funny when upgrading things so is there a limit to hard drive space? Also how much power does the current hard drive use as i dont want to loose much battery life. will it slow down my mac at all, i have heard about people getting problems when upgrading hard drive. Lastly will it void any of my warranty (i know the new hard drive wont be under warranty)

MacBook :: Upgrade My Hard Drive From 500GB To 7200rpm Drive?

Aug 17, 2010

I have a MacBook (Mid 2009) and want to upgrade my hard drive to a 500GB (or maybe higher) 7200rpm drive. I have already upgraded the hard drive once, from the standard 160GB to a 320GB 5400rpm, so I already know how to do it.I just need more storage, rather than using external drives. Also, after I upgraded to the 320GB drive, the startup was much slower than when using the stock drive, so that is the reason for having a 7200rpm drive.

IMac :: Hard To Upgrade New Hard Drive?

Oct 17, 2007

I plan to purchase one of the new iMac's and I assume that the hard drive is not user replaceable so I know there are warranty risks but a couple months ago I was able to upgrade the hard drive in my current generation MBP to a 250GB drive. When I get an iMac I plan to get the more expensive 20 inch version and want at least 500GB since it'll be dual boot (BootCamp) Windows XP/Mac. Even the 750GB is tempting. I may go the route of the smallest hard drive and then buy a larger hard drive and upgrade myself to save money but is this hard to do?

MacBook Pro :: Hard To Upgrade Hard Drive?

Jan 13, 2010

I have a 3 year old Macbook pro which is still going strong. It's my birthday soon and I'm thinking about treating myself to a new 500 GB Hard drive. I have looked up how to upgrade it myself on iFixit.com and it looks OK but I'm just checking here to see what the general level of opinion is about difficulty / risk of buggering it up. The link to the process is here: [URL] I paid to upgrade the stock HD to a 250 GB whilst it was still under warranty but since that has expired now I don't think I have as much to lose by opening it up myself.

Mac Pro :: Hard Drive Will Not Mount After Optical Drive Upgrade?

Feb 23, 2012

I recently performed an optical drive install. Had to remove the hard drive bays (I use three hard drives - Luckily, 2 run OSX).  I carefully removed all three drive bays and the empty bay. When I inserted the drives into the computer I had changed the position, swapping one OSX drive with a different one and reversing the drive bays. On restart, the computer started on the drive I had not selected for startup and I received an error message stating the other drive could not mount and it gave three options (Initialize - Ignore and Eject).

I can see the drive in Disk Utility and repair the permissions (it's also located in the System Profile).

I tried a few things I read in the community using various Terminal commands but was unsuccessful.

(Let me point out that I recently switched from a PPC G5 to MacPro and swapped the drives from PPC into MacPro and all has been fine until I removed changed their positions in the bays)

OS X :: Hard Drive Upgrade For MB Or MBP

Sep 22, 2009

I currently have an early 08 Blackbook, but some circumstances presented themselves to possibly upgrade to a MBP (probably 13in) and I am considering doing that. I was told that upgrading the hard drive in my current MB would help me to see some performance upgrades in some media intensive programs I used frequently. While I don't understand how that works, I will be needing more space soon anyway, so I am planning on upgrading. What are some of the best options for a HD upgrade that will working in my MB or a MBP if I upgrade. Specifically, advice about the 5400rpm and 7200rpm differences would be awesome.

Mac Mini :: Good High Resolution LCD Monitor Compatible With 2010 Mini Server?

Jun 23, 2010

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

What I need help is copying all my apps and files over to the new hard drive and to install the new OS X operating system. Shall I just upgrade the OS X on to my current 100 GB hard drive, then create a clone/ boot disk so then when I install my new hard drive I create the clone on to the new hard drive.

What is the best option for me as I want to upgrade my hard drive and upgrade my OS X, without installing my apps and files again.

MacBook :: Upgrade Hard Drive On It?

Feb 18, 2012

I am having all kinds of problems with my 2nd (in less than a year) WD external 1TB hard drive on my Macbook. I use it for my iTunes and iPhoto, as well as my Time Machine backup. So when my Macbook just stops seeing the hard drive that is a problem. The first WD 1TB My Passport HD did the same thing until I had to run the Mac HD repair program to see the hard drive. The problem persisted. I've ordered my third HD but this time it's a Seagate GoFlex USB 2.0. My Macbook has only a Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 ports. My iPhoto and iTunes files are too big to fit on my 160GB internal HD. Is there a Apple recommended internal HD upgrade to solve this problem? I have Mac OS X 10.7.3
