Jun 1, 2012I am slowly getting to the limit of my 2tb hard drive and would like to purchase the largest drive possible. It is mainly for my itunes library. So if i can split the library into seperate parts easily i could just buy another 2tb. Would like to hear suggestion about sizes of hard drives compatible with early 2009 mac pro or hints on how to split itunes library into diff parts.

IMac :: Early 2009 24" Hard Drive Not Showing Under Devices
Nov 8, 2009I'm not sure what the culprit is because the night I downloaded the last update of 10.5.8, the circuit for this room also blew. I don't know if it interrupted the download or not, as I wasn't paying attention. However, the next morning I woke up to the gray screen and it never booted. I finally was able to boot it up and the hard drive had a name like kjkldfjkjdkljafkjadkj. I renamed the hard drive and ran disk utilities on it. It needed to be repaired, so I installed the installation CD and used disk utilities from it. It says everything is fine. However, the hard drive now does not show up under Devices when using Finder. Also, everything seems to be a lot more sluggish now.

Mac Mini :: Internal HD Full - Wanted To Upgrade To 8GB?
Jul 4, 2010I'm a newbie desperately seeking tech advice on how to remedy a full-to-overflowing 160GB internal HD problem and add more RAM. I have a 2009 Mini (2.26 core 2 duo, 2gb 1067 DDR3 RAM), along with a pair of 1TB external USB HDDs (one 1TB external USB drive dedicated for time machine), and a 3.5" 300GB Velociraptor drive borrowed from a friend. MOst important to me is I want to absolutely minimize any chance of jeopardizing/risking losing ANY files/data already on the drive or avoid any time-comsuming selective file deletion just to make room on the "Macintosh HD" internal drive.
One friend suggested I make a bootable clone of my internal drive onto a larger drive, which I did with a program called SuperDuper, i made the copy onto the Velociraptor drive. Presently the WD raptor is running on an external USB docking station. Then I was told to make the external drive my startup drive. However, all my external drives use USB (no Fire wire interfaces). The problem is when I go to system preferences the only startup disk choices are the (full) Macintosh 160GB HD and Network Startup. I cant for the life of me figure out how to specify one of the external drives as a startup disk, although the 3rd party application SuperDuper! claimed to make a totally bootable clone onto the Raptor drive.
As a short term solution, I also received advice on copying a bunch of the larger files, like my iTunes video library (at least 50GB) onto one of the external USB drives, deleting the contents of the Movies folder on Mac HD, and inserting an alias for the files or folder pointing to the copied movie files destinations on one of the external 1TB USB disks. I'm scared it will adversely affect iTunes being able to find the files on the external drives. Can I make an alias for the whole iTunes Movies folder or do I have to make them for each of the files I copy?
I need to summon the courage to try and open the Mini case and see if I can implant the cloned drive ultimately, but I wanted to try and get it to boot externally first before I got into the innards. Anybody have a link to a photo or video step by step how to on the actual case cracking operation?
explicit how-to directions and advice on how to fix these issues and/or assist me with several links on how-tos that I can use in terms a simpleton like myself can implement without risk of losing my precious files.
Expressed another way, what I want to do is simply upgrade the internal drive with a larger and faster drive without any risk of losing data. I was thinking there out to be a relatively painless route to employ an external drive to function as a logical extension of the internal drive, so that OSX would see the stock internal drive plus an external drive as a single "virtual" volume. Although pricey, I was considering a SSD drive for significant performance increases.
As to RAM upgrades, what type of memory slot arrangement is inside the case? I wanted to upgrade to 8GB, but 4GB would be acceptable. I need some recommendations on what type of RAM modules to obtain to make this happen.
Most of all, I am seeking knowledge and experience from expert users to learn from. Tremendous thanks in advance for anyone/everyone who can help me and teach me.

Mar 27, 2009I just bought the base model Mac Mini yesterday, and I am going to tear it open today to put in a bigger hard drive and more RAM. My question is...since I don't need the entire 4GB of RAM, I am happy with 3GB. The system has one 1GB chip in there already, so can I simply just pop in a second 2GB chip for a total of 3GB? I wasn't sure if they had to be installed in pairs or not. Is there any downside besides obviously the memory not being under Apple's warranty?

I believe if you get your Mac Pro with the 640 KB HDD it's only with a 16 MB cache.
MacBook Pro :: 2009 17" Fans Running At Max Speed Aafter Hard Drive Upgrade?
May 9, 2012I recently picked up a 17" 2009 unibody MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz, 4gb RAM, SuperDrive and a Samsung 1TB hard drive. The system did not come with the original hard drive and I don't have any other hard drives to test and verify that the new larger hard drive is the cause. I have tried a clean install of Snow Leopard, Lion and even Mountain Lion but no matter what my fans always running at max speed (5k+ RPM). I have looked at iStat and the temps of any of the components in the machine never show more than 42*C so the fans should never be running at full blast. Oddly enough smcFanControl shows 0* temp but fan speds for both left and right are always 5.5k+ and very noisy. Using HDD Fan Control I am able to get at least the right fan to run at a controlable speed but its silence is drowned out by the left fan that still runs on full blast. I have already done multiple SMC resets and PRAM resets with no change in the condition. These noisey fans are driving me insane! I have run every available update as well. Is there a chance that the hard drive or something elses temp not being supported or detectable by OSX is causing the fans to default to the fail safe constant high speed?!

Mac Mini :: 2010 MM Hard Drive Upgrade Level Of Difficulty?
Nov 7, 2010I have a 2010 Mini with 8GB of RAM on the way and I'd like to hear opinions on how difficult the HD upgrade process is. I'm looking to put an Intel X-25M SSD inside. The instructions at ifixit.com seem pretty straightforward but it looks like there is very little room for error in some spots.
I'm not shy about opening any Mac or any gadget for that matter. I've upgraded the HD and RAM in all the towers I've owned, upgraded the HD and optical drive in a PowerBook G4 12" and done the Optibay swap with RAID setup in the older (non-unibody) 15" MBP. More recently, I replaced the glass screen on my shattered HTC Evo 4G.
Mac Mini :: Mac Mini Server 2009 Main Drive Replacement
Jan 9, 2011 One of the drives in our 2009 mac mini server 2009 has died. I have taken apart many minis so have no problem taking it apart to replace, but does anyone know which drive is the primary, "Server HD" drive? Would it be the top drive (first drive you come across during disassembly) or the bottom drive closer to the logic board with the two pads stuck on? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure so I can avoid removing the drive that's still working fine.
Also, to keep the server running in the mean time, I am booting to the second drive which is working fine. Just curious, once the dead primary drive is replaced , can I simply use carbon copy clone to copy back from the 2nd drive, or will I need to install snow leopard server back onto the new drive?
Mac Mini :: Best Internal Drive For New 2009 Mac Mini
Jun 10, 2009Now that I have a New Mac Mini, What is the best internal hard disk to upgrade it with. I'm thinking dependability first and one that's quiet. Now that the Seagate 500gb 7200rpm drive is at v.4 it seems the way to go, just want to make sure. The Hitachi TravelStar 7K320 320gb is a cheaper option if its just as good or better for dependability and silent/cool operation. And on reading some reviews of the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500gb 5400 it seems a very good drive too and maybe just as fast as the higher priced and faster spinning Seagate.

First, I'm not a gamer. This pc would be strictly for photo editing and video conversion. I'm using photoshop cs4/ lightroom for pictures. For video, I have two objectives. The first is to convert 8mm to dvd. This would involve iMovie to keep it simple. The second would be for new HD video. Since Apple doesn't support blue ray just yet, I just need a way to offload to avchd on a regular dvd. I think Toast would accommodate this.
IMac (27") and mini would both have 4gb RAm. Hard drive space isn't all that important since I'll have an external as well. 2.5ghz vs. 3ghz. nVidea 9400 vs. ATI radeon. So would the less processing power of the mini be offset by the better monitor (Eizo or NEC ~24")? Or is the iMac display good enough?

Mar 22, 2012Had since May/June last year i5 13" and only since I applied all updates few weeks ago it seems to be louder than it was before?
It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.

Ive been reading that I can use a flathead screw driver to turn on computer by shorting two pads on the board.. i checked the service manual and says nothing on how to jump it, but that u can.. has anybody tried jumping the Mac Pro through the Pads?

Mac Mini :: 2009 - Recycle Superdrive As External Usb Drive?
Mar 21, 2009I am going to remove the Superdrive from my 2009 mini and replace it with a second HD as detailed by ifixit [URL] I will then run OS X from the X-25M SSD and the second drive will be a 320Gb Scorpio Black which I will run XP in boot camp from ( have to use additional internal drive to boot XP from since the X25-M currently will not work with XP and I cant get XP to boot from an external drive...). This leaves my setup without a way to work with optical media so I was looking to get an external usb drive and plug it in whenever I would need to install something from a dvd, or burn a cd etcetera.
Instead of throwing away the removed superdrive though and buy another drive, how about recycling it as an external usb superdrive? I would connect it via usb with a Deltaco sata to usb adapter I have. Anyone see a reason why this would not work? Has this been done before?
MacBook Pro :: 13inch Early 2011 No Longer Recognizes Internal Hard Drive?
Apr 6, 2012last night my MacBook Pro (13inch early 2011 model) froze on me so I let it be and closed the lid. In the morning it was still frozen. I did a hard restart and got the question mark on a folder icon. I tried everything, resetting PRAM, etc, etc. Northing seemed to work untill I plugged in my external hard drive (used as my time-machine backup) and I got to the re-installation/ utilities / safari / restore from backup screen. In the utilities it saw my external hard drive, but not my internal main drive. Any ideas? I've read hundreds of similar posts and nothing seems to resolve an unseen hard drive. Oh btw I plugged in another SATA HDD and it didnt recognize that either.

Heres my problem: Whenever I play back the HD video in final cut it usually lags pretty bad - when I play a full 1080p movie thru quicktime with barely any programs open then it seems to lag or skip too.I'm just surprised this machine can't seem to handle such video. I reinstalled my OS a month ago and noticed some improvement. Even with the "Better Performance" option checked in Energy under system pref.

Sep 29, 2010Just got done loading 8gb of ram and my OCZ vertex 2 ssd 40gb. Load Time of apps is amazing. My one question is boot time went from 48 seconds to 33. Should I be getting better. I used carbon copy to clone drve and I'm only using 14 gb of the 40 that's there. I domhave to say these setup screams at certain jobs.
