Mac :: IMac 27 - I5 Vs I7 Heat Noise & Power - 1200VA UPS

Jun 4, 2010

I am almost 100% that an iMac 27 is my target, (not quite discounted the MP but lack of remote without extra is actually a big factor).I would prefer the internal HDD bays and such forth, but I've had a MP before and as I have some ext FW its not a deal buster. The imac looks stunning, has simplicity and a nice big screen. My only real questions are (with it being on top of the desk); what's the noise and heat like for the i5 and i7 models? I'd like to get thoughts on both. For my uses an i5 has enough oomph, but the i7 would be nice (just speed up those transcodes etc).Is there a huge difference in the power draw on these machines (I have a 1200VA UPS).

Mac :: Heat Power In IMac Vs. MacBook Pro

Dec 23, 2009

Maybe someone can help me understand this a bit better. I have a MBP with a 2.16GHz CPU. I think it's about 2.5 years old. It has the ATI x1600 GPU. My dad previously had an iMac G5 2GHz but now has one of the new iMacs at 3.06GHz.When running iStat, I can notice an obvious difference in the CPU temperature. I don't think my MBP runs less than 120 degrees idle, while the iMacs were easily under 100. I haven't seen the new iMac while doing CPU-intensive tasks, but the old iMac never got above 140 if I'm not mistaken. As I'm encoding video on the MBP for a DVD using iDVD, it's getting up to 187 degrees. The CPU is using about 125 percent of my processing power -- 200 percent max if you didn't know. The temperature is the same even when HandBrake gets up to about 190 percent of processing.

PowerPC :: Heat Power Management For G4

I have an old G4 mirror-door that I use as my PVR. It's stuffed with 4 big drives to record media, but it runs all day and sucks tons of power. Plus, it heats up the cabinet like an oven. Is there a piece of software etc. that can help the mac better manage its power consumption? I don't like using the OS X drive sleep option because the drives always go to sleep just when you need them..

IMac :: Which System Produce The Less Heat?

Sep 28, 2010

I'm planning to buy a new iMac in the next week but I'm looking for the one that will produce the less heat so that will make less fan noise. I'm only using it to watch YouTube and play World of Warcraft. Anyone know which one will produce less heat, i3 or the i5 or even the i7. Budget is not a problem. I prefer to pay a little more if I know I will have less fan noise so less heating. Anyone maybe have different model at home or at the office and noticed a difference between all the models ? Maybe it's more a size question between the 21.5 and the 27 inch iMac and less a cpu question ?

IMac :: Reducing Heat Of 08 24"

I just got my new 24 2.8 imac to replace my original first gen intel 17 imac.

It seems wonderful, screen speed etc.

Only concern I have is that it feels awfully hot, especially upper left corner, not just the frame but also the screen itself.

Is that normal and expected?

My first generation imac with the Merom is basically cold compared to this one.

Mac :: IMac 24" Memory Heat Spreader

Nov 29, 2010

I have been researching this and I have came up with no answer. There are note book heat spreaders available [URL]/Product/Produc...82E16835207003 and I was wondering if it will fit in an iMac. Yes I have looked to see how cramped up it is in the memory slot, but I found on the sunbeamtech website that the thickness of the total heat spreader is only .2" at the opposite side where the memory plugs in at. Also I found out the the thickness of the copper on the heat spreader is only .4mm thick which is very very minimal. I have just purchased one of these to test out with the 8GB ram I just purchased for $120 from newegg with a $20 mail in rebate

After seeing some pictures of the inside, I am a little concerned about the heat buildup from the CPU, GPU, and the display. I know Apple does its homework, but is there too much in such a confined space without greheat circulation? Is this even worth worrying about?

My G5 has been making more noise at start up. It sounds like one of the fans is making a grinding "rrrrrrhhhh" noise. My living space if very cold and quite dusty (warehouse). I notice it more on colder mornings ( inside temp 45° - 65°F ). Should I refrain from using my machine on cold mornings/nights until the heat is running?

Power Mac G5 :: Only Hissing/licking Noise From Digital Audio In?

Nov 2, 2007

I am trying to hook up the digital audio output on my cable box to the digital in on my dual 2.0 G5 running 10.4.9, 1 gig RAM. I have HDMI and component video out to monitor, but I use JBL creature speakers and sub for audio.

I have the propper cables and routing, sounds prefs set to digital in, and line out, to go to JBL creatures and first I get no sound at all. If I start AudioHijack and use same input and output settings all I can get is a hissing/clicking sort of sound. Same with using Soundsource and LineIn.

Audio MIDI Setup only shows or giveds me Built-in Audio for selections under system settings and properties for. Ausio Input and output show Master stream grayed out and I selected digital in and Line out for my sources and no change. Both ar set to 441000.0 Hz 2ch-24bit as well.

Power Mac :: Dead G5, Makes Hurricane Noise, Drives Ok

Mar 14, 2012

My trusty PPC g5 from 2004 has died, or at least it won't start.  It shows the grey apple screen, but no spinner, and after a few minutes the fans kick in and build to a wind-tunnel noise.

I don't have a backup of this machine, or it's other drive, so I am nervous about taking it into Apple where they might just wipe it.

Also, I surprisingly CAN start it up in Firewire disk mode, and both drives seem to be OK when accessed from another computer.

So I've copied off the most important things, and I will probably try to make clones. But before I finally cart it into Apple (where it will probably cost more than its worth to fix it),

Mac Pro :: 8-core Power Supply Making Noise Like Refrigerator Radiator?

Nov 23, 2009

This is in reference to a Mac Pro 3,1 8-core purchased around Feb 2008.

Lately, I've noticed a strange noise coming from my power supply that sounds like the noise a refrigerator radiator makes. It's a humming noise that rapidly comes and goes, constantly.

The power supply fan speed was running at 599rpm yesterday, but is running at 629rpm today.

I'm not sure if the problem could've been caused by adding additional ram (12GB, OWC) or an additional HDD (3rd HDD, WD), but I didn't really notice the noise until after adding these components.

What could be the cause of this problem? What are my repair options if necessary (without Apple Care)?

Power Mac :: G5 Fans Running And Making Loud Noise Before Crashing?

Mar 24, 2012

I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think.

IMac :: 27" IMac Seagate 1Tb HDD Noise Normal?

Nov 24, 2009

rite as some will already know i have took back my 27" iMac a total of 6 times and now i am on my 7th (4th one had screen issues), after actually accepting the "belly rumbling" "popping" noise and just getting on with the i5 experience, i thought i would actually contact Seagate direct on the actual matter for the rest of people on here who have doubt about there seagate hard drives. So i ring the operator i told him the whole story his first reply was sorry we dont support apple hardware! my response was "respected but the hard drive used is a seagate product"! he then replied saying sorry sir i misunderstood and quickly responded how can i help. I then repeated the problem and he asked for the HDD serial number, i was then very specific on the the noises we are all hearing and he made me repeat what i said a good 3 times so he had a very good understanding (in other words he did take this all seriously) he then said he was going to talk to the relevant person and put me on hold....10 minutes later he's back on the phone and he again asked me a final time! (ffs) to explain the noise he then quickly said in response the hard drive is supposed to make that noise. he named it the barracuda in seagates terms.
