Mac Pro :: Get A Large Noise That Seems To Be Coming From Around The Power Supply?
Apr 18, 2012
Every time I start up or wake up my mac pro from sleep I get a large noise that seems to be coming from around the power supply. The best way to describe it is that it soudns like a buzzing sound or like one of those large elctrical transformers outside except not as loud. It goes away within 5-10 minutes.

This is in reference to a Mac Pro 3,1 8-core purchased around Feb 2008.
Lately, I've noticed a strange noise coming from my power supply that sounds like the noise a refrigerator radiator makes. It's a humming noise that rapidly comes and goes, constantly.
The power supply fan speed was running at 599rpm yesterday, but is running at 629rpm today.
I'm not sure if the problem could've been caused by adding additional ram (12GB, OWC) or an additional HDD (3rd HDD, WD), but I didn't really notice the noise until after adding these components.
What could be the cause of this problem? What are my repair options if necessary (without Apple Care)?

I have a PowerMac G5 with the first motherboard that is out of order, and another PowerMac
G5 Late 2005
with 2x2.0GHZ
Mounting the powersupply from the 2004 on the 2005 is the powersuply compatible or not?
EDIT: I looked on Mactracker and compared the two:
Max Watts in the first is 604W and 450W on the late 2005.
I want to put a powersuply from a G5 2004 (604W ) on a G5 2005 that had a 450W powersuply is this possible ?

My 2*1.8Mhz G5 tower (second version) shutdown two day ago and refuses to turn up again. I have absolutely no sign of life, not even the external white led or the internal red one. I'm trying to figure out whether it is the power supply of the start button which cause the problem.
Is it possible to test a G5 power supply like an ATX power supply, by connecting two pins which would make the fans start ?

Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?

Has anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.
I Did the PRAM and PMU reset.I can hear it over music or the tv. It grew lower in pitch today after squealing for a half hour. I'd normally not let it go on that long, but i was
in the other room.Is my PISMO dying?

I made this a new topic because I think it is important enough to do so. Probably most of those that originally complained about this have moved on to the new MacPro but I am sure there are still enough G5 owners out there that still have concerns about this topic.
A clean install of Leopard eliminates the infamous power supply beeping
Its amazing, my G5 is like a new machine; no more of the annoying power supply beep; although, I learned to live with it after a while and didn't even notice it. However, the silence is now very noticeable.

I hav" a "late 2004" G5 2.0 dual processor. To upgrade graphics card, I find many require a power supply splitter. Do I have a molex 4-pin connector? I can't see the location inside the box.

G5 dual 2.0, 2.5Gb

Anyone know where I can buy an extra AC cable for the MagSafe 85W power supply that came with my late 08 MBP? I'd like an extra cable and I'm not interested in ponying up the dough for the entire power supply. I checked the Apple Store and Macmall, but haven't found anything as of yet.

Power supply partially expired on my 2.3GHz G5. Have found a donor. Manual says remove logic board before power supply. But you could remove power supply with board in situ on older G5s...

I noticed in the past week that when I scroll through a webpage I can hear a clicking sound (similar to the one from the MM) coming out of my speakers? This also seems to happen when I scroll through my iTunes library but in this case it's a humming sound, when the scrolling stops so does the noise. I've tried muting the speakers but the sound is still there, has anyone else experience this before?

I have just noticed a weird clicking noise coming from the left hand side of my macbook. It only clicks when the macbook is being moved about or a sudden movement occurs. I thought it might be the HDD motion sensor but since its coming from the left hand side it's concerning me slightly.

It has no doubt come to the attention of many that the Radeon 4870 requires two PCIe six-pin power taps off of the motherboard, which is exactly how many allots. Say we wanted to use a GeForce 8800GT and a 4870 at the same time, which would require a total of three PCIe six-pin power taps. What I've read on the forums here indicates that powering them would be possible, but what ways would work?
As far as I can see, I've got two options:
1) Split one of the 6-pin power taps with a Y-splitter, and use the resulting two taps for one card and the other tap for the other card.
2) Use one of the ODD 4-pin molex power taps, convert it to a 6-pin tap, run it down to the card. But I'm running two optical drives; would it be possible to split one of those power taps into two, then run one out converted to a 6-pin and into the card?
I don't know nearly enough about the motherboards and power sources to know which way would work - if any - and if there is any risk involved. I'm running an early '08 mac pro, but I'm curious if this would work in other models as well. Anybody know enough about the hardware to say?

i'm in desperate need of an APC backup power supply for my mac pro and acd. the old backup i've got (APC ES350) is not sufficient to power the mac pro and acd. i purchased the ES350 for my powerbook almost 7 years ago.
anyway, every time i have a power failure (it happens quite often), my entire system shuts down. which APC should i buy? i want to ensure that everything still runs for a good while so i can save everything before powering down completely.

There has been plenty of discussions in the past re: CPU, HDD and RAM temperature, but what about the power supply on the Mac Pro?
My 08' MP reports 70 degree Celsius while the 09' MP reports 35 degree Celsius, while both machines are reporting an Ambient temperature of 27 degree. Why such a discrepancy?
How about your machine?

How can I decrease the noise coming from my emac?
Sounds like a Jumbo jet taking off. Most of the noise sees to be more from the wooshing of the air through the vents rather than the fan.
I've vacuumed all the dust out of it (I bought it used).
Any ideas that don't require major surgery. I'm wondering if putting a new fan in would help? How much are new fans?

Just got a new 2.2 MBP delivered to me yesterday. Didn't seem to have any problems at all until about an hour ago. I just began hearing a metallic "plink" noise every few minutes or so. Its not a click or a tick but more like a hollow plink. It comes at random intervals but sounds like it may be coming when the hard drive(?) or something inside the machine spins.

I bought a MBP 15 inch 2.66ghz brand new back in september. Since my purchase i have has several things that have been annoying the crap out of me.
Issues:
1. Clunk noise coming from HD, I have read some posts and installed Hdapm which reduced the sound a bit (i have the 320gb 5400rpm Fujitsu)
2. I believe becuz of the clunking (parking of the heads) causes my computer to stutter (mini freeze for like 1-2 secs) while using my MBP..
3. The battery used notify me that i had PLENTY of time to use even when i had below 50% battery life left, now (on Firmware 1.6) the battery tells me i usually have like 2:30mins of use when im at 85% or so battery strength left. and YES the screen is dimmed along with the keys.(i have calibrated the battery also)
I went back to 1.6 firmware due to the notion that various people have had better success on their harddrives working "better" with stock, or aftermarket.
I am on a CLEAN install of Snow Leopard...

Well, this problem that I thought was coming from the Radeon 4870 fan was really coming from the lower intake fan on my Mac Pro. The rattling noise was coming from this fan itself, and the Radeon 4870 was actually running silent the whole time. This is probably why people with the X1900 and older Mac Pros have been reporting the same issue. This has actually solved the problem for me, my Mac Pro is running silent now: I downloaded SMC Fan Control, then I increased the speed on my intake fan to max, 2800rpm. I let the fan run at max for one minute, I had an idea that this would cause the fan to work out the kinks if it had any. Then I returned the fan speed to normal, and the problem has been gone for the past 15 minutes. You can download SMC Fan Control 2.2.2 (Snow Leopard compatible) here: [URL]

First of all, my Macbook doesn't make ANY noise. Is very silent, but everytime I start a game, or I start to upload some files, the fans start to flip faster and faster and makes a big noise, like a rocket being launched. When I stop the game, the fans start to go slowly.

The power supply fan in my 2010 3.2 quad just went beserk. Spinning at 2950 rpm. I suht down and restarted using the four finger solute (command-option-p-r) and it seems normal now.
What could have caused it to spin full speed? Maybe I should buy apple care . . .

I was wondering if someone could tell me what power supply is used in the current oct/quad core mac pro. Also in the Power Mac G5 and early versions of the mac pro. I am thinking of buying a Power Mac or early Mac Pro second hand and will upgrade the GPU myself and just want to know what PSU (watts) they have.

My Powerbook has been making a static-y sound from the back of it at random times. It sometimes won't do it all day, and then it will randomly start, and won't go away for a while. It's actually doing it right now! I've tried putting it to sleep for a few minutes, but it started back up again when i woke it up. There, it just stopped again! It can last from a few minutes to an hour, completely randomly! This problem started when I had Apple replace the logic board on the Powerbook a few months back, and numerous repairs later, nothing has changed, so I'm hoping someone here has an easy fix!
