May 29, 2012My mac desktop is starting up and only showing the apple
View 3 RepliesMy mac desktop is starting up and only showing the apple
View 3 RepliesI forgot to switch on the power socket at the wall so when I came back it had powered off. When I switched it back on it showed the last screen visible before sleep mode kicked in and then showed the apple logo with a progress bar underneath. The progress bar starts to move slowly but after about a minute starts again. It slowly starts to move again but stops after about two minutes and the macbook powers off.

I installed Windows 7 Beta on my MBP yesterday and for a while it showed up in my Startup Disk options in System Preferences, but now it doesn't show up. The partition is still there in Finder and I can boot to it each time by holding down the option key, but if I restart more than once in Windows 7, it defaults back to OS X. Is there a way to put the disk back into the Startup Disk options?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've finally installed win7 on a secondary internal hd in my mac pro. When starting up and holding down ALT i can indeed select between the two os's. However in mac the "Startup Disks" system pref's doesn't show win7. I would like to be able to restart from the system pref's instead of holding down alt but i can't if it's not viewable in the Startup Disks Pref Pane...
The restartup using bootcamp procedure takes longer then it should on my machine, a mac pro with two ssd's. Sometimes it gets hung up on the grey screen for thirty seconds or so. How can I get Startup Disks to see my Win7 hd? How can I get the grey screen part of the bootcamp startup process not take so long?
I ran omnidisk sweeper and it shows I only have 39GB of used space. However, when I check the info on the startup disk it shows that I only have 300mb-5GB left depending on the day. I have deleted all unnecessary files that I can. I can't really find anything else to delete. I only have a couple programs installed that are pretty basic like word and excel.

I had an image from an older macbook (10.5.4) and I put it in a newer MacBook which I assume was could not boot as far back as 10.5.4, so I updated it by booting 10.5.6 on an external and running the combo 10.5.7 update on the MacBook's internal drive. I boot and after staying on a blue screen for a while, it goes black and shows me a command prompt and I can see all the processes starting up. then it goes back to blue and works normally. On shutdown, I see the prompt again. I cannot boot into safe mode or single user mode for some reason. When holding down the s and shift it still does the same thing. I can however still use option to boot from a different drive.
The computer runs perfectly normally once booted. I just don't want to see the command line stuff. So is there some way to stop it, or hide it?
I have recently updated to Lion. How can i stop mail and other programs showing on startup?

After having repairing my hard disc with Utilities (having started up from my Install Disc holding C key) and being okay for a day, the thing seemed to crash again. Came home and the machine was off, not just asleep. Tried to start up, heard a single long beep tone, then the regular start-up chord, but it just hung. Then started up off the Install Disc holding D key, did the Appple Hardware Test, Extended, and that just stalled after a while - as it did each time before - and also the Mac was making a not-good-sounding whirring, hum noise. Started again off the Install Disc, this time holding C key, went to Utilities to try a Repair again, but this time the hard disk was not even showing in the Disk Utility!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 13 inch aluminum late 2008 MacBook. The processor is 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running OS X Lion 10.7.4. I am in the process of replacing my old hard drive with a new one.
My old hard drive is partitioned as follows:
Name: Macintosh HD
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Size: 132.5 GB
Name: BootCamp
Format: Windows NT File System (NTFS)
Size: 26.69 GB
When I was partitioning the new drive I did so as follows:
Name: Macintosh HD
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Size: 973.51 GB
Name: BootCamp
Format: MS-DOS (FAT) --- This was the only option that I was given that I thought would work. I did not have the option of "Windows NT File System (NTFS) to choose from. I only run 1 program on Windows and that is the only reason I have BootCamp on there at all. However, I do HAVE to have that program. Size: 26.34 GB (I just used the same size that was current, or close to it.)
I connected the new Western Digital 1 TB through an external device, partitioned it as stated above, and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drives. It went through fine. (It took 2 hours and I went to bed before it finished.) This morning I woke to see that it had gone through well. I then started the process with the BootCamp drives.
However, before I started it gave me errors stating that I wouldn't be able to run Windows off of the Cloned BootCamp drive. So I used Winclone and it seemed to work fine. I then replaced the old drive with the new one. Then I rebooted the machine. Everything seems to be fine except when I went to restart it in Windows using BootCamp that was not an option. The only start up disks listed are the Macintosh HD.

I am just new here, and not really a tech guy so I was in panic when I encountered the issue with my MacBook Pro. I will be as detailed as possible here so you might be able to help me out with my problem. I encountered network issue of not able to connect so I first did a RESTART but the restart did nut push through. It ended up in black screen only for a long time. Having no response, I hard booted the machine by doing a long press on the power key. The machine totally shut down after. After a couple of minutes, I pressed the power button and my laptop started. I can hear the usual sound during restart. After a couple of minutes, the MAC logo appears with a gray background, the usual start process. However, what alarmed me is that it stayed in that screen forever, it did not continue. The keyboard lights are also off, which is usually lighted when I had successfully powered my laptop. I am sure there are sufficient battery since I also checked on the battery indicator. having waited for more than 30 minutes, nothing happened and the display is the same (the Mac Logo in gray back ground). I did another forced shutdown by doing a long press on the power button. After 6 hours, hoping some time would make it work, I tried turning on the laptop, however I am still getting the same screen.

I don't know if apple may be tweaking the look of forthcoming Leopard point releases, but this pic on the Apple Mac page has me wondering. It is definitely NOT the stock dock color and even contrasts with another pic on the same page.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Powerbook G4 with me and it doesn't boot up. I am suspecting it is hard disk/ software error that is stopping it from booting up. Here is what I see when I try to power it up: White screen, Apple logo with the round circle with rainbow color. Do you guys think that is is a software error that is stopping it from booting up? The last thing I did was to install Windows Messenger for Mac! I am thinking of trying to do a re-install using the disc that comes with my Powerbook purchase but I am at a lost of what to do. Can anyone please share with me the steps that I need to take? I've got a 'new' hard disk already, please advise on how can I rebuild my Powerbook!

I just converted a few of my Bluehost-hosted email accounts from POP to IMAP. These accounts and Apple Mail, itself, is on my hard drive (not in iCloud). For some reason, after about five minutes of sitting untouched in my Yosemite Apple Mail inbox, emails sent to these three addresses appear to be "read." The blue dots disappear, even though I haven't clicked on them. Seriously, they haven't been touched. That's not true of the email accounts I have with two other providers (CoreComm and GoDaddy) that I left as POP accounts. They stay marked as unread until I actually click on them. What could be causing this to happen?

I live and die by my mailbox, I'd been using MS Outlook but it was fraught with too many bugs. A few months ago I decided to switch to Apple Mail as a lesser of two evils. I saw the demo for Apple Mail on Yosemite and it looks like a very robust program. However for now, I still find Apple Mail limiting especially with Exchange services.. but I digress.Â
I archive all my mail and rely heavily on the "search" feature. I recently started to notice messages I was searching for were missing. Initially I wrote this off to user error, however today I looked in my Sent folder and my Archive folder to find that there was only 30 days worth of mail?! I began to panic as I logged into my Office 365 webmail, but found relief in that all my messages were still there. The issue seems to be that Apple Mail is not keeping or displaying messages older then roughly 30 days. I've been using Apple mail for almost three months, so these messages should be there. Â

The left column of Apple Mail viewer window has a function at the bottom allows you to see pop up the "Mail Activity" but very little activity shows in there. Nothing like the separate Activity function which you can open from under the drop down "Window".Â
Is the Mail Activity in the viewer window not working properly or is it supposed to show only very limited Mail Activity? Â
Would be convenient to not have to use the separate window for viewing Activity.

I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.
View 1 Replies View Related I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.
I'm noticing some weird behavior in my Mac Pro first gen.
Basically, when I start it up, the displays just stays black for some time, until the Desktop loads up and the computer is functional, but never displays the gray screen with the Apple logo. This just happened all of a sudden and stayed like this.
I know is not a big deal now, but I'd like to sell it in the near future and this could be problematic for that.
I just bought an iMac G5 off ebay and today I tried to use the Tiger install dvd because the previous owner had deleted software like textedit, etc.
Anyway, I put the disc in and clicked on Install Mac OS X, then clicking restart. once the iMac shuts down and begins to restart, as it is on the grey screen you can hear the disc being read, then as the background goes a different shade of grey and the Apple logo appears, a minute or so passes and then the iMac begins making a lot of noise. I went away for 10 minutes, came back and it was still doing the same thing.
So I'm basically looking for help because I really want to erase and reinstall everything.
