MacBook Pro :: Wifi Reception Is Terrible / Constant Wifi Dropouts?
Apr 27, 2010My 2010 15" MBP has constant Wifi dropouts, sometimes minutes at a time. Sometimes I have to reconnect. Yet it gets 4 bars. My MacBook never had these problems. It's generally slower, too. It's now useless for online video like Hulu. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether it's hardware (e.g. they moved the antenna, and/or because of the metal case) or software/drivers? I'm going to submit feedback after input from ya'll.

Mar 7, 2012I have a pretty old Titanium Mac Book that runs OS 10.3.9. It's a moderately slow machine, but still works- and although I realize that it won't be able to stream video or anything, I figure it would work for email, and basic web browsing- But I'm wondering if it's going to be compatible with any new products such as a USB wifi antenna - because the room where I want to use it won't alow for an ethernet connection-  Also, will the old 10.3.9 OS allow me to connect wifi to the newer airport extreme base stations?Â

MacBook :: Won't Work With Wifi Network / Drops Wifi
Jan 10, 2011MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.
Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.
So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.
Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.
AIRPORT says the following in System Profiler.

I don't have a problem turning it on I just need to input my WEP key every time. This is a little frustrating, especially when the folks at Apple are clueless. Jun 23, 2009I have an aluminum Macbook on a wireless network. My network is configured as follows: In the area covered by the AP, I have the Macbook and an old, busted PC. The PC works fine, and internet is as fast as if it was plugged in. The mac says it has full signal, but the internet speed varies greatly. This Macbook tends to show full bars even when the signal is weak, though. Sometimes it loads pages fast, sometimes, it takes almost a full minute to load pages. While I haven't tested it on many other networks, it appears to work fine elsewhere. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? It's almost as if the Macbook isn't connecting to the AP and is connecting straight to the main router which is far away. As I was typing this post, the Macbook completely lost wifi signal.

Dell Dimension 3000 (PoS) running XPThe Macbook and Netbook are both connected via Wifi, while the PC is connected via network cable to my Macbook with Internet sharing on.Out of curiosity I ran a speed test (speedtest.net) to see if there was any difference between what I was getting through Wifi, and through sharing. I could understand losing some speed going from wifi to internet sharing, but I also get 8-9 mbps download results on my netbook.

Often, when I go to a new location like to a library or a friend's house, I won't be able to connect to the wifi (it will timeout) or it will connect, but the signal strength will be very weak or the internet will be very slow.
It's not that it's out of range, I'm in an area that's known to have wifi and others around me can pick it up fine with full strength. At home, my wifi works fine, but the router is in the same room I use the computer in.

Sep 21, 2009My MBP is in the shop. I'd cloned it onto an external drive, which I'd hoped to use as the startup disk for a borrowed, nicer/newer MBP. Both computers run 10.5.8. The borrowed MBP gets onto Internet via my WiFi, no problem, but if I start up from the external drive, it connects to the WiFi but can't seem to actually get on the internet (even from right next to the router). Signal strength looks good. I unplugged the router for a couple mins and then repluggd it. No joy.

Oct 17, 2009I recently got FIOS and I love it. My router is in my basement because I wanted to hardwire it into my ps3 and 360. Regardless, the WiFi signal is great throughout my house. For some reason, my Macbook keeps grabbing my neighbors unprotected WiFi signal. I guess on the 2nd floor of my house, his signal is stronger than mine.
It takes 2 seconds to switch it back, but it seems to grab it whenever I wake it from sleep and at other random times. I was thinking of telling my neighbor that he needs to protect his signal, but even if I dont, I want a way to prevent my mac from locking onto the wrong signal.

OS X :: How To Manually Set Up Wifi Configuration
Feb 14, 2010Originally had Airport Extreme wifi basestation. I am running on old iBook G4 with OS 10.3.9 and a newer MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.2. My girlfriend has a PC laptop. Before i got the Macbook pro, i had no security set on the base station because i needed OS 10.4, then my g/f moved in and we set up the airport extreme base station security up on her pc. Everything worked fine until i brought home the MacBook Pro. suddenly, My iBook would not get a signal at all, and i was having problems with the MacBook Pro. My girlfriend, however, could still get a signal, no problem. There was an airport update for mac, so i updated and then thats when i couldnt get a signal AT ALL. I couldnt figure out what the deal was and got fed up and went and bought a Netgear wifi router. I set it up on my g/f's PC again, since there was a set up wizard. I wanted to set it up on my MacBook Pro, but it was so complicated that I didn't even want to attempt it.
NOW, starting a couple of weeks ago, my browser started lagging and it was taking longer than normal to download/upload etc. I saw that once again, there was an update for airport. I held off updating for a while because i didnt want it to hose my whole Wifi deal again. But alas, i got sick of everything lagging, and bit the bullet hoping it would take care of the problem. So, i did the update, logged into Netgear's website, via my g/f's PC andran updates on the wifi router itself, and now she cant get a signal, my iBook G4 will not get a signal and gives me an error, and my MacBook Pro will get a signal and load web pages but it literally takes FOREVER. I logged into my yahoo email account and could never get it to load up my inbox.
I am not tech savy at all and do not know how to manually set up any of this stuff, but i am thinking that's the only thing that may solve it (other than hardwiring into the router). I don't want to hardwire as a permanent fix, because I use both of my computers for my home business and need the wifi, as does my girlfriend.
