Mac Pro :: Warning Signs - No Enough RAM To Complete Functions
Apr 17, 2012
I am having issues with my memory. I keep getting warning signs that I don't have enough RAM to complete functions; however, my RAM status says it is OK. The ECC says disabled? Does that have anything to do with it?

I've recently attempted to install 2 sticks of 2GB RAM into my MacBook Pro, but unfortunately had jammed one stick in the lower RAM compartment (Apparently I forgot to enter it at 45) and had a rough time getting it out.
The RAM stick is busted and had to replace it, but I'm quite sure the slot might suffered a bit.
What are the signs of RAM failure?

How do you get rid of dollar signs in Excel 2008. I see the $ symbol, but that only adds them. If I click it again, it doesn't remove them.

I have had a look at previous Q & A and am satisfied that 1.5 GB ram is fine in the eMac however i would like to know what the symptoms would be if there was memory incompatibility.
There is a long story , here is the short version.... Basically things went into a frenzy, wouldn't even shut down. The (additional) memory wasn't put in at my place and the computer also had updates done by the other person, when it came back it was unbelievable.. and worrying... my son refitted the 2 sticks that were in it, still frenzy, thought it was wrecked, looked up book, did safe boot. after angonising minutes everything came back.
Gathered courage and we re installed the (new) 1gb alongside incumbent 512 and now things seem ok.
I don't believe the ram is /was faulty so something else went on.
The sticks that are in the machine are 512gb DDR SDRam PC3200U 30440 ( this was one of a matched pair)
1 gb DDR SDRam PC 3200U 30330 ( this is the new one)
I felt i bought the 1gb carefully to be compatible. I do see there is a difference in the last number.

eMac G4 PowerPC, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Firefox 3.6.28

Laptop suffered wine spillage, now it won't boot up. Cleaned the logic board (+ gpu/cpu/heatsink) with isopropanol, rinsed with electronics cleaner (electrosolve), but still won't boot. There are some visible signs of oxidation, very very slight. Magsafe connector works, ac adapter light only comes on when connector is connected to motherboard. Also the motherboard gets slightly warm to touch when power is plugged in. When ac plugged in, the macbook won't start up. Couple of questions:
1) Anyone have a diagram of the a1181 logic board? (2.0ghz, core duo)
2) Anyone know how which pins to short on the keyboard connector to power up (in case the keyboard is the problem); remember reading it was the farthest left pins, can someone confirm?

Well, I bought the new aluminum macbook and have loved every single aspect of it so far. The only thing I have been missing since switching from a Windows based laptop is...there is no home key! (or at least one that I have found yet).
So my question is, is there a way to make a keyboard shortcut which does the same function as a home or end key?

So this evening I finally upgraded my MacBook (1.83GHz, first generation) to Leopard. (I am not a luddite, but rather just really behind the times.) I had previously been using OS X 10.4.11, and upgraded via a retail OS X 10.5.4 installation disk (legally acquired).
Everything seemed to go swimmingly.
But then I noticed that my F7 key, which previously controlled the Expose "All windows" function (indeed, it is labeled as such), has stopped functioning properly. It no longer controls the Expose "All windows" function. That function is now handled by the F9 key.
I have consulted Google, and have tried a number of potential fixes. I've tried to reassign the key function(s) via both the Keyboard & Mouse pane and the Expose & Spaces pane in the System Preferences. No dice.

I was very 'cleverly' trying out all the function keys as I had read that one of them was supposed to be a desktop shortcut i.e when its pressed you see the desktop immediately!
Somehow all the keys have now all messed up - i.e the volume keys no longer work and instead they produce the dashboard key etc - all very weird for me!
I've read a similar post by a user who had the same issue last year and have tried to use the reply that was given to him - but its not worked i.e
System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard > Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.... (that's checked!)
I don't know what else to try - why isn't the RESTORE TO FACTORY DEFAULT working!
I know i managed to get the right click mouse button option working for my macbook yesterday (and the F keys seemed to have stopped working since then).

Im dealing with a power mac g5 with 10.4.11 installed that is behaving as if the space bar is held down indefinitely. Even when keyboard is unplugged, any text field just takes off running. Also, none of the drop down menus will stay down, they immediately disappear. When single clicking on an icon, it will instantly go to the .ds store icon and leave the selected icon unselected. Is this a bug that can be fixed?

Took about 3 hours it said to encrypt everything...but now what?
Do I have to do like a weekly encryption thing or update it or something ever so often?
I'm guessing everything on my Mac is now encrypted, but will new stuff coming in be as well?

My question is about the copy and paste functionality of the Mac while using Safari. For some work I do, I need to copy and paste website content to word documents (for example, in PC, I would select all, copy, and paste into Word). I can do the same thing with Safari and Pages, yet when I am on a site with drop-down menus and have selected the item from the menu and try 'select all, copy and paste' with Safari & Pages, it copies ALL drop down menu options. I only want it to copy the one I've selected. Also, this site allows me to enter free-form text in text boxes, but the select all/copy/paste doesnt pick up the text I've entered either.

Recently switched to Mac (Macbook Pro). When I highlight something and hit enter, I'd like it to, you know, open the file. But it doesn't, it allows me to rename the file. Can I change it so enter opens the file/folder, app? I can't even change the settings from system preferences? I need 3rd party programme? Also, could I make a DEL key? Can't I use cmd+X for "cut" function for files/folders?

Have spent quite some time trawling around the net regarding this problem and as yet other send back again have not found an answer.
What I talk of is that when people send back there a 24inch LED ACD for repair when it comes back the keyboard brightness control does
not work and the brightness control in Prefs/Display is missing.
The strange thing is the Display functions as it should when used on a laptop etc, so does the REAL problem lie within the Mac Pro somehow.

What do the two little buttons under the power button on the front of a G4 Quicksilver do? The one in the middle has a "play" icon on it although it is pointing in the wrong direction to be a play button. It points to the left. The other smaller one has the look of a reset button.

I just bought a new Mac mini, and have attached to it a Logitech keyboard that was (a) designed for Macs, and (b) worked just fine with my old G4s. It has an "Alt" key (with Mac's "squiggly square" symbol on it) and an "Option" key (with the "Windows" icon on it). Previously, my cut-and-past function (for example) used the "Alt" key (e.g., Alt + C for copying; Alt + V for pasting). Now, with my new mini, the functions of these keys seems to be exactly reversed. Same with the "Select All" routine: Used to be Alt + A, but now it's Opt. +A. I supposed I could relearn the functions; but I'm wondering if there's any way that I could switch the functions of these two keys and restore my keyboard's operation as it was with my G4s?

I spilled coffee on my keyboard. Now, some of my keys don't work. Namely, my apostrophe key, the letter "p", my return key, and delete. Also both slashes. And my arrows, save for Mr. Right. My question is this: am I screwed? is there any chance I can restore function to these? I have a nice big bottle of isopropyl alcohol at my disposal and I can pretty much have my way with this thing. It's beyond warranty so, short of blowing it up, I'm not too worried about any minor damage I might do to it. anyway, if anyone can throw out some advice, whether it's "this is how you fix it," or "toss it through a window," I would be endlessly grateful.

I have tried several ftp applications, transmit, yummy etc.
I plan to make an update to my site and I would like to know if there is any mac ftp program which supports several ftp functions like the ones described below:
- Rename all files of the remote hosting server, at once (like _old_site_files_filename). Also exclude the renaming of existing folders.
- Add files to folders that already exist, without overwriting/replacing folders themselves, but just adding the new files inside folders. Keep existing folders without replacing them. Some folders have special permissions attached to them, so it would be a mess to replace them because then I would have to set all permissions from the beginning...
I hope there is a solution for these tasks in a mac os x ftp application.

Recently, spotlight just stopped calculating math functions and I'm not sure why. When I enter an equation, it doesn't try to solve it, but it still finds files with the numbers included and other hits. It's mostly a minor nuisance, but I have no idea why it even stopped, since everything else seems to work fine.

Is the following possible, and if so which keys do I need to press at start up?
1) Install SSD drive into mac
2) Put the original HDD in my external USB drive dock
3) Boot from the original HDD which is in the USB dock
4) Go to disk utilities and format the SSD
5) Clone the HDD to SSD (carboncopycloner)
6) Reboot and d/c the HDD, leaving SSD in mac
I don't know if its possible to boot from the HDD if its in a USB dock. If it fails, I will hold C to boot from install DVD.

I've been having intermittent web browsing problems with our mid-2009 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.2... our network has an AirPort Extreme with an AirPort Express being the booster router, and the problem seems to have been pretty much only limited to web browsing, that is, other activities like emails, VOIP phones (we use a program called Bria), Skype and iTunes sample streaming seem to have been pretty reliable... I've tried deleting my safari cache.db file as another thread in this forum suggested, and it's a bit too early to tell yet whether that has made a lasting difference, but if it doesn't, does anyone have any ideas about what else might be causing the problem? If it helps, an iPhone 4 on the same home network seems to have significantly better performance when using its web browser.

i moved my iMac when it was on to avoid getting water on it - after that the text to speech is now enabled and I cannot seem to turn it off.
I have tried to change or reset it on the system preferences, speech ,text to speech but can't seem to change anything. There were no key functions assigned so I assigned Control z and tried turning on or off but to no effect.
Also the key board functions are changed. For example the volume (f12) activates the dashboard. When I hold the fn key down the functions are correct. I tried to reset the functions to default in system preferences - keyboard but nothing changes.
Nothing got wet - I think I must of hit some combination of keys to mess this up.

My father is a recent switcher to the Mac. Before, on his PC laptop, he used Lotus 1-2-3 a lot, almost, I daresay, religiously. Now, however, as he bought his MacBook Air, I installed Lotus Symphony onto it after doing some research. However, he then told me that it couldn't use the old queries that he used. Not a Lotus user myself, I don't personally understand his problem, but he said he used to be able to type in "/sort" or something like that and it would do the command, without need to go through the menu system. Now he has to relearn things based on the menu system. I'm not exactly sure if that's what he meant, but that's how it came through to me.
Is there some way to reactivate those legacy features/queries in Symphony?

I am not really a gamer on my laptops, is there any other reason I would want 512 vs. 256? Can OS X tap that memory for other functions? I just do programming, web dev, virtual machines, email, office, etc.
