Mac Pro :: Finding Highpoint RAID Controller?

Sep 14, 2009

Can anyone comment on the Highpoint RAID controller Apple is selling?

[URL]

I'm mostly looking for bulk (non-redundant) storage using an eSATA port multiplied enclosure. Nothing too fancy required. Are there any cheaper basic eSATA multi-link options available? (2006 MP) My biggest concern is good driver support. I see some SI/Sonnet cards that have questionable driver support especially with Snow Leopard.

Mac Pro :: Get A Highpoint Raid Controller And Put Those 4 Drives In A Raid 5 Array?

May 1, 2008

I have a macpro with 4 x 1tb drives

Is it possible to get a highpoint raid controller and put those 4 drives in a raid 5 array (and then create partitions inside that array) - or do you need to have 1 drive by itself for the operating system, and then create a raid array using the remaining 3 drives?

Lastly, are the highpoint 3500 series a decent card? and fully compatible?

Mac Pro :: SATA Raid Controller For Massive HDD?

Apr 28, 2008

I am using the first generation Mac Pro, and I wanted to ask some questions related to SATA HDD and The Raid configuration. I currently have 4 HDDs in the internal bay and 2 external in the enclosure using the USB2 connection. The performance is not that great, and I am sick of adding more HDDs through USB2 which offers really slow performance. I was thinking of building a dedicated NFS File Server using Linux, but before I did that, I wanted to ask if there are solutions out there within Apple Mac Pro without going through this route.

I currently have 6 and probably need to buy 3 more in very short time period. also, all of my HDDs are 750g. Simply put, I am wondering if there are like 16 or 24 port SATA Raid Controller that I can buy for MacPro. Since the MacPro can't house all of them inside, I need to use external enclosures for some of these HDDs, connected through eSATA or whatever means possible without jeopardizing the performance. I am also interested in Raid 5 setup, so, that support in raid card is mandatory.

Mac Pro :: RAID Controller And Connecting Two Drives For Windows

May 31, 2009

Can I install a Raid Controller and connect say two drives to it, specially for windows? Will it be bootable? Or perhaps even connect the iPass of the four internal bays to an Adaptec 5405 and get a separate cable for my Mac Drive. Will both be bootable? What if I just want to boot Windows for now? I sometimes need to convert my early 2008 Mac Pro into a rather beefy Windows workstation and the lack of HW Raid is rather irritating.

Mac Pro :: Multiple Sets Of Striped Drives On One RAID Controller?

Aug 5, 2010

Does anyone know if it's possible to have two sets of striped drives using a single hardware RAID controller? I'm looking at the ARC-1210 and it seems like you can have more than one set of striped drives, but I'm not positive. My plan is to have two small SSDs set up for the boot drive and two HDDs for storage, each pair set up with RAID 0. Can this be accomplished using a single controller? Note: I'd just use OS X's software RAID but I need to keep the cores freed up for computation. I'm not concerned with redundancy--just speed.

Intel Mac :: Repair A Damaged Controller For Concatenated RAID?

Mar 15, 2012

My iMac has been crashing a lot lately and finally it's hard drive just up and failed. I have been doing hourly Time Machine backups to a concatenated RAID set (2 USB drives of 1 TB each). However, I think the iMac crashed while backing up and hosed the RAID controller.I've since plugged the two disks of the RAID into my MacBook Pro to see if I can repair them. I can see the individual disks of the RAID in Disk Utility. I can even verify and repair them. But i can't do that with the RAID in the sidebar, and it won't mount on the desktop. When I try to eject it from the DIsk Utility file menu, it says disks are in use.

I'm pretty sure my data on the two disks is intact, but I can't seem to get the RAID to mount as the single concatenated set on a desktop, which makes it inaccessble. Is there a way to repair the JBOD RAID without losing all my data, so I can then restore from the latest backup to my hosed iMac?

As I write this, I've got CCC cloning the entire drive and praying that it doesn't fail mid-copy.

PowerPC :: Finding Motherboard Information?

Nov 24, 2010

I have Powermac G4 AGP (M7628LL/A) that has the AGP slot without the 'power-supplying' tab at the front of the slot. Therefore my NVIDIA GeForce2 MX video card (ADC/VGA) will only enable me to use the VGA outlet, and not the ADC. I have two Studio Display Monitors (M7649) and cannot use them.

I need to know (1) What other monitors will work with this G4 (in case I cannot fulfill #2), and most importantly (2) Which motherboard can I replace this one with that will enable me to use the video card in it's fullest?

Mac Pro :: Moving To Raid-0 - Finding Easiest Way?

Going to setup a raid using apples utitlity to get a raid 0 of two 640 blacks for my 2008 MP. I have adequate back up, including time machine and two separate back up discs that I keep information on. My macbook pro also has the same information with its own time machine back up.

So I have to wipe my original 640 so the new raid can be created I assume. Should I restore from time machine to put my info back on after creating the raid setup? Is there an easier way, one that doesn't require me copying all my information over?

IMac :: Finding Information About Refurbished 27" And The AppleCare

Jun 12, 2010

Well I received my refurbished 27" i5 about two weeks ago. Since taking it out of the box it has consistently rebooted itself and sometimes even shuts down where I can't power it back up unless I remove the cord from the machine and reinsert it. I tried everything to troubleshoot, zapped PRAM, Reset SMC Controller, logged times after removing USB components, ran multiple quick and full hardware tests. Finally I gave one last attempt and wiped my drive clean and reinstalled snow leopard...Not a single one of these measures worked.

So today I finally called applecare for the first time ever. THey were extremely helpful, didn't try to walk me through troubleshooting steps since they understood that I already tried them all. They instead stated that since Im at around 28 days since ordering (may 14) that I can have it repaired or they can claim the one I got as DOA and ship me a brand new one. Once I receive the new one I ship the old one back. They also bumped up my delivery to overnight since I have been putting up with the reboots and trying to troubleshoot myself.

Hardware :: Can A RAID 1 Guardian Maximus Rebuild Easily / Have Partitioned The RAID Set

Dec 2, 2009

I just bought a Guardian Maximus RAID1 kit and I have two 1TB drives in it. I'm using it over Airport Extreme as an airdisk (mac osx 10.6.2)

My question is simply: am I running a risk by partitioning it into two partitions? Should I ever have to rebuild the failed disk (which I understand is really simple with the Guardian Maximus) - will it have trouble doing two partitions? I'm using one 500gb partition for time machine and one 500gb partition as redundant itunes/media.

Mac Pro :: Raid Speed ... Raid 5 Vs Straight Sata HDs

Jan 28, 2008

ive put 4 of the hitachi 1tbs in my new mac pro.. and i really want to do Raid on them eventually.. and buy the pricey apple raid card.. i'll do it.. but speed wise:

How fast is a Sata connection straight from HD>Motherboard... ~75mb/s?
Is the Raid 5 config with all those drives much faster... around ~110mb/s?

Do you know if there is anyway to get a 5th drive into the raid 5 array? using the ODD space.. or some externals too... i need as much as space as possible...

And boot camp wont work with raid card anymore? I was thinking to have the startup disc be a raptor to increase speed on the apps, how would it integrate with the raid card, etc

Mac Pro :: Software RAID Versus Hardware RAID?

Apr 20, 2010

I am planning on getting a 2010 MP when they come and have a question about it. I am 90% sure that with my budget, I will not be able to after a RAID card. I am wondering if software RAID would be alright or if it's so bad it's not worth doing. Also, there is small chance that I could buy a RAID card later on, how would I install it? I will be using it for 3D animation with Maya and some zbrush modeling. Also I will be doing some Photoshop and illustrator and maybe some gaming on win 7 boot camp. Feel free to list any other pros and cons about either a software RAID or hardware RAID, I wana make sure I have all the details before making a final decision on it.
