Mac Pro :: Preview Markup Ruins Images Since Update To Yosemite
Dec 4, 2014
I take screenshots on my Mac Pro and then I usually annotate them using markup in Preview. However, since the update to Yosemite, when I save a marked up image, the colours go weird. It's like they turn negative or super saturated.
This is a screenshot taken before I mark it up using Preview. I do some markup in Preview (please note, this is a screenshot of the image OPEN in Preview and having markup added to it, but not saved)..Then I save it and this is what happens.. Is it a bug in Preview? I'm on the very latest updates for Yosemite 10.10.1

After the firmware update yesterday, the finder on my MacBook Pro is no longer able to transfer files from my iMac to my MBP or vice versa. Most folders on my other mac are visible, but some crash the finder, transferring files gets part of them moved over, but then it stalls and crashes the finder.Seems like a serious bug. Or has the firmware update simply removed the file transfer possibility at all?Reinstalling Lion wasn't even possible as the recovery program stalled as well. It was not possible to choose a language.

is there a way to resize images in Preview? I have photoshop but it'd be a lot easier to be able to do it quick-like.

Recently the preview program has stopped working. I cannot open PDF files or image files, i.e. jpeg. The only thing I can think of that I've done recently is installing a program called "MailRaider." I just uninstalled it using a program called "Appdelete."
I tried this suggestion from the apple discussion forum that did not work:
Go to the finder, find one of the PDFs you can not open. then click on that PDF one time. go to the file menu, chose get info from the file menu. the inspector window that pops up will include a section on open with. expand that section and click on the open with menu and chose preview. then click the "Change All.." button.
all PDF should now open with preview. you can repeat this process with jpegs, gifs, tifs, pngs, extra as needed.
What else can I try? Do I need to reinstall the preview application? If so, how do I do that?

I know there's a way to do this. I want to be more proficient in Preview without having to fire up CS3. I'm going nuts trying to find a decent tutorial online. I found this one but by reading the comments, there seems to be another way.

Does anyone know if you can change the quality of a resized image with Preview? I've created a service to resize images down to 800px width, but most of the time the file size is as large as the original. This is resizing screenshots off my mbp (1440x900 res).

Preview will still open .pdf, but not .jpg. It happened suddenly, no rhyme or reason. I've checked the info on the .jpgs, there's no restriction on the permissions that should keep them from opening, and Preview is selected as the app to open them. I've tried trashing the .plist, repairing permissions, and restarting. No dice. I'm running 10.5.6, and haven't installed anything recently.

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I've been noticing that Preview does not display images. A box will open and the background will be there, but no picture. I can scan images, and the automatic preview image that pops up is blank. I can download images from the internet, and they will appear as icons on my desktop, but when I double click them I get an appropriately sized blank Preview box. I can save the image to a thumb drive and put it on my girlfriend's computer (we run identical iMacs, for reference), and it will appear on her computer, but she is using the Adobe suite.

I have been using preview to investigate screen shots I've been taking. The problem is preview is opening every single file I've viewed with it when I open it. I take a lot of screenshots.
How do I get image preview to open JUST the image I told it to open? How do I make it stop opening multiple images at once when I don't ask it to?

After upgrading to 10.5.6, the vast majority of my recently created, saved, or altered image files (JPEGs and PNGs, mostly) no longer feature a thumbnail preview image while in icon preview view mode. Rather, they merely display generic icons indicating what kind of file they are.
This is unbelievably frustrating. Is anyone else experiencing this?
EDIT: It effects old (read: not recently created, saved, or altered) image files as well. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which image files are affected; one folder will display thumbnails, the next will be full of generic icons.
PS, this is not an iPhoto issue. All my iPhoto images have thumbnails, as per usual. This issue concerns image files in folders and on the desktop.

After install of Lion I noticed that Preview no longer allows me to Save As an image. I work in Photoshop and cannot open the images that I scan with Preview. PS will not recognize them. I used to be able to open the Preview image and Save As TIFF, JPEG etc but that option no longer exists...and I am with unusable images.

When I edit a photograph in photoshop (cs3/cs4 etc, it doesn't matter which version) the preview of that image goes blurry after its saved. The image is the full res still and hasn't lost any quality but when I have the icons that are of a large size they appear really blurry and 'low-res'. I know its a small gripe but it makes things difficult as a photographer when I am trying to organize images that perhaps look similar or I want to see as a whole set.

I just scanned some negatives (about a 3 hour endeavor) and when I rotated some of the images in TIFF format in Preview, there is a pause as it loads in the information, and then the photo turns black. I tried running it in Photoshop and the images are still black. Is it because the file size is too large so preview decides to throw away all of the information? Are there any ways to get these photos back?

My .mov files no longer have icon images and will no longer play in the preview app. They all worked fine in snow leopard. Most of the files were shot on a canon 5d and then formatted to prores422 with mpeg streamclip. very basic stuff. This is seriously slowing down my work process as I use the preview app contantly when sorting new footage. All of the clips play fine in QT but not in preview.

Computer details:
13" Macbook Pro - mid-2012 (9.2)
2.9 GHZ
750 GB Hard Drive
8 GB RAM
OS: 10.8.2
I tried to open a single image in Preview (Version 6.0.1 (765.4)). Instead, it opened just over 500 images (out of 2300 on the hard drive) as "Untitled 1" "Untitled 2" etc. Over three hundred of those were grouped in a single window (that is, one of them was visible large, with thumbnails of all in the "drawer"). Why it opened the files as "Untitled", nor, in fact, why it opened them at all. I had only clicked on one to open it. I quit Preview, but upon reopening, all the "Untitled" images were back. The same thing happened when opening Preview after restart. The only way I could get rid of them was to close their windows one at a time. Of course, when closing something that's unsaved, the computer asks whether to save it or not, but I cannot click Command-D (as in previous systems), I have to click the Don't Save button each and every time. This takes ages with so many windows open.
Well, since I had no choice, I did that for the couple hundred images that had opened in their own window(s). Then I tried to close the images in the single window. I would do Command-W, then click Don't Save. The dialog closed, but the image didn't go away. Then a new Save dialog box would open with a different "untitled" number specified, and I would do it again. And again. And again. The images, however, did not disappear. Then I saw that the names (Untitled 101, Untitled 204, etc) of some of the images I had previously attempted to close were coming back again. They had not actually closed. I could not get rid of that window with three hundred images open in it. If I quit Preview, then reopened it, ALL of the 500 plus images opened again, even the ones I had successfully closed. The application is now useless until I find a fix.

I am using Word for Mac on my Macbook Pro with Lion. Everytime I open a particular document in Word, the view shows Markups, which is really distracting. I can go to View, and get rid of the markup view, but then it shows up again each time I open the document.
Also, each time I open Word, every document I have worked on in the last few months opens, too. I close each document individually, using File - Close, which I thought would take care of it. But it doesn't, and all these documents open, instead of just the one document I want open.

I am wondering if anyone has an update on when finder will show a thumbnail for the raw files from the Canon 5d mark III? I have a macbook pro 17" 2011 model and since upgrading to Yosemite I am now unable to load images to websites such as ebay. This is just one of the sites having the problem but other sites as well where you are required to click the "load image" button. It gives you the navigation to the folder where the images are and you can see them but they are unclickable. All images are jpeg images with .jpg extension. I've included the series needed to get to the folder and you will see in the last image, none of the items are selectable, even the .jpg files.
Whats the secret to getting this option back so I can upload images to websites?

I tried to update my OS to 10.5.6 but failed. the update stacked at 10% percent. I went to Genius bar yesterday evening. The guy tried to install combo update for me and the nightmare started. The combo didn't work too and it came out with fail updated, file damage. He verified the disk and it said " key length invalid" and he restart my computer. Then my computer never come back anymore. It can't start up and shows some words in black background and with 4 countries languages to let me restart my computer. I tried to use safe mode restart, try to select start disk(it shows my disk and network option) but the result is the same.

when I receive an iMessage that contains a photo or other image, Messages on Yosemite won't display the image? It appears to be a sandbox permissions issue.
Briefly, when I receive an iMessage that contains any image, the image displays just fine on my iOS devices, but in OS X Yosemite (10.10.1, build 14B25), it just shows up as a generic icon (attached at the bottom of this question). Clicking the icon or magnifying glass doesn't load it, double-clicking it doesn't load it, Quick View won't show it... nothing. If I look in /var/logs/system.log, any attempt to view it generates sandbox-related errors:
Messages[30820]: [Warning] Transfer: unable to create image for IMG_2758.JPG.jpeg
kernel[0]: Sandbox: Messages(30820) deny file-read-data /private/var/folders/7l/cn4n4k4n4p31ncqq9qqk1klrydkmkm/T/IMG_2758.JPG.jpeg
If I manually open up that directory (/private/var/folders/7l/cn4n4k4n4p31ncqq9qqk1klrydkmkm/T/) I can see the image and open it myself, but Messages can't do it... and I can't for the life of me figure out how Messages's sandbox is configured and what is going on here.
This all happened when I upgraded to Yosemite; prior to Yosemite, everything worked fine. I've tried to blow away /private/var/folders/7l/ and let it get rebuilt, to no avail. I've also hunted for Messages's sandbox config file, to no avail.

Ever since upgrading to Yosemite OS X on my MacBook pro, I've been unable to view pictures that I send or receive via SMS Text and iMessage on my phone, and receive via AIM, within iMessage on my computer.
All images show up as their file name only, and cannot be viewed or downloaded (see attached screen shots.)
I can view the images fine on my phone, just not on the computer. I've played around with iMessage settings and nothing seems to work.

OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1 (14B25)
Preview Version 8.0 (859)
A downloaded PDFdocument displays boilerplate text and images for the emanating company but the specifically requested content is (seemingly) missing (i.e. not visible/displayed).
However, if the same document is opened in a browser (Safari Version 8.0 (10600.1.25.1)) then all of the expected content is displayed.
Interestingly, on invoking Print within Preview, the print preview thumbnail image shows the missing content.
Furthermore, a QuickView of the document within Finder does show the missing content.

I've noticed this every since I upgraded to Yosemite. Never seemed to be an issue until now. Is it possible I have a plugin or something that's not supported? There really isn't too much out of the ordinary on my Mac.
When I press the space bar, the box spins for a second and then only an image appears previewing the video. At the top right all it says is "Open in Quicktime."
