I've just received new entry level Mac Pro. I used an iMac 27 up to now and, and probably for this reason, My Mac Pro seems noisy. A part of the HDD noise, the main noise source seems to be the fans. What I wan' t to ask you is: If I replace the GPU with a passively cooled card I can reduce the noise substantially? or noise is caused by the system fans and not from the GPU fans?

My drives for all 3 imacs i have gone through so far were dead silent until I Partitioned them, then they made the classic stomach growl noises. I was just wondering if others with the noise problem had a partition or not, ause it seems making a partition should not effect the noise. Say I am crazy cause to me it sounds crazy but I swear the first two imacs were fine till I partitioned them. I am now afraid to partition this new one I have cause its quiet and I do not want to go back to the store again! Anyway others who have had this issue did you have a partition?
View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst of all, my Macbook doesn't make ANY noise. Is very silent, but everytime I start a game, or I start to upload some files, the fans start to flip faster and faster and makes a big noise, like a rocket being launched. When I stop the game, the fans start to go slowly.

It's the 2008 model MacBook Pro with the 9600m gt 512 card.
So, I just noticed that when I have my MacBook Pro in High Performance mode it emits an high pitched noise when the fans are running around 6.2k RPM and the CPU and GPU is around 63c. The noise follows the speed of fans, and at idle the noise is gone.

I just received my new Mac Pro from apple on Saturday. This thing is a beast! I am planning on running apps from Final Cut Studio 3, Photoshop, After Effects, and others. 2.66 Quad/6GB RAM (OWC)/640GB HD/ATI 4870
I have a few questions.
1.) Is it normal for the Mac Pro's fans to make a lot of noise when you first start it up or wake it from sleep? My fans make a lot of noise for about 16 seconds or so.
2.) I am planning to put a second optical drive in it. Is there a way to eject only one tray at a time, or will it do both?
Now, I am selling my iMac for around $800 and I am looking at some upgrades:
An additional 21.5" Acer LCD display
A mini display port to dvi adapter
A LG blu ray burner
Two 1TB samsung internal HDs
A blu ray player (I do not have one yet)
Elgato Eye TV hybrid
It started off as a wierd whirring noise. slosly got louder. now the macbook actually vibrates to it.

My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy fans are constantly going on my g4 powerbook and the noise drives me nuts. I do all sorts of work - graphics (CS2), music recording, multimedia... but even when I am just not doing anything intensive the fans are on.
The fans are at full speed now and the temp reads 37C / 98F. I've used an icurve since I got the machine.I've put up with this noisy sound for a couple years now. One person said I need to clean the air vents, like dust is causing the noise. Does anyone know about this?
its a g4 titanium powerbook 867 mhz 768 RAM (ancient I know but it still works!)
I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think.

My Mum has just turned on our family computer- an iMac G5, 1.9ghz 17" (first model with built in iSight).
It gets to the grey screen with the apple, with the loading icon below it, then after about a minute the fans turn out pretty loudly, and it goes no further, just stays on the grey screen.
I have an iBook 500Mhtz PPC G3, 384 RAM, 10GB HD, Dual USB. Several months ago, I opened it up and it simply would not start up. No start up sound, no noise from the fans/HD/anything, motionless. Completely dead. I've held (many times) the PMU, and tried almost anything. Is there anything else I can do to get it to AT LEAST turn on? The battery is dead, and the charger is fine, but the battery won't charge. I tested the charger on a PB G4. I'd rather sell the whole computer as a working computer. I figured I'd get more money that way. do I need to sell it for parts?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI got a new macbook black that is not covered under warranty, the magsafe fried on it and it used to boot up but not charge the battery or show any signs of power from the magsafe so then I bought a new magsafe that connects to the logic board and replaced it and when I plugged the power adapter in it tried to turn on right away and then the fan spinned and the sleep light light up then it shut off right away and I didn't smell nothing from the macbook or logic board. The battery now charges and the light on the magsafe adapter lights up so I tried to turn it back on and it doesn't the same thing turns on and then right off just the fan spins and then the hdds spin lasts for like a sec or two. I tried to turn it on with the battery out and with just the battery in nothing swapped the RAM same thing went from two 1 gig sticks to 2 256mb sticks and then tried another two 2gig sticks same thing then I tried a different hdd and have the same thing happen? What I need to do to get this working and yes I tried a google search and every1 ended up taking it to apple and I cannot do that.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a MacPro 2.66 quad-core intel. 4gb ram. I have a hard-drive from my old Powermac that i upgraded to 10.5.5 for this computer. Everytime I put my computer to sleep, and then wake it back up. The fans spin up to maximum speed and all the fans are running really loud and then after about a minute all spin to normal speed.
I don't have any other flaws except for this. Why could this be?
My parents recently bought an iMac. Yesterday my mom was playing a game when the computer froze. Neither force quit or holding the power button was doing anything so in her frustration she unplugged the system. Today, after plugging in the system again, it won't turn on.
I press the power button on the side of the wireless keyboard and the green light on the keyboard turns on for about 3 sec and then starts flashing. No fans start up and the screen does nothing.

I need the thoughts and advice from your seasoned Mac people - I have 2 MBP's - 1 15" aluminum, one last years model 17" Unibody (with Black around screen). The 15 has run great since day one. The 17" was ok, but now is locking up and causing me to reboot, fans seem to run on high all the time, and it is very slow to react while using the OS, it gets worse until it locks up. I have upgrade to Snow Leopard thinking that that might fix it, but it has not.
When I got it, I restored from the back up of my 15" using carbon copy cloner. I only imported users and data such as pictures and music. Do you guys think that this is a hardware issue or a or should I back all my stuff up and then blow everything away and reinstall from the ground up with a fresh SL install?
When I called apple they tried to sell me apple care and told me that it was out of the full warranty and if I send it I would to pay for what was not under warranty. SO I am hoping that someone has seen this and has a fix that I can do without having to take it in.
the other day i wake up and open my macbook pro and immediately heard the fan making noises ive never heard it make before. i checked istat pro. the fans were going at 2000rpm. this is when i started to get concerned since i would never hear the fans at that speed before. the difference was day and night. it sounds like the one or both of the fans are hitting something. i always hear the noise when i start up or wake up from sleep and after a while (30 minutes to an hour) it usually goes away but has come back once without me turning off or putting the computer to sleep. its a refurbished less than a little more than a month ago. im hoping its just some dirt that made it through keyboard and will eventually go away because i dont want to send my machine in to get manhandled by apple repair. has anyone had something like this happen before?

I just began hearing a metallic "plink" noise every few minutes or so. Its not a click or a tick but more like a hollow plink. It comes at random intervals but sounds like it may be coming when the hard drive(?) or something inside the machine spins.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a problem... I use very processor heavy programs on my iMac G5 and up until about a year ago, I was getting along ok. Here's the gist of it:
1) World of Warcraft/ProTools etc. Prolonged use over many hours eventually caused my imac's fan noise to be unbearable. Even worse, my imac began randomly shutting down almost predictably during high processor use.
2) Was taken to an apple store (while in warranty) and only thing said was that it needed a new logic board. No explanation what actually happened to it. Logic board replaced. Few months later, it's happening again.
3) I am now outside an apple warranty and it will cost me $400+ to get it repaired. It is functional for regular internet use, but on sites like youtube, after a few videos it will likely shut down.
I have opened up my computer several times to inspect the capacitors, but they all look like new. I realize overuse is probably the problem, but if there is a fix I can do myself, I'd at least like to try. The problem is that I have no idea what to do I hate hearing "needs a new logic board" instead of "this part ____ needs to be replaced/fixed"

My macbook tends to make noise when I close it, this only happens when my mac is heated up, and it disturbs me because I bring my macbook to school and it's embarrassing when your mac makes those noises. Is it because of the screws? My contract is out of date, and I don't want to attempt anything. Also, my macbook been dropping connections since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, will 10.6.2 be able to fix this update?
View 9 Replies View Relatedive had a look around an only found bits an pieces relating to this but nothing really specific.i have an imac 3.06ghz, 4gb memory. less than a year old its been making some noises recently (like a downloading sound for afew seconds every so often) which happens every 30 seconds or so. this happens even when theres no programs open and im not connected to the internet!!! ive only really noticed it doing this the last month or so to be honest.
the computer has also been re-formated about a month ago as it was passed onto me from a family member, an im wondering if its got anything to do with that?is this a normal thing for macs an maybe i just havent noticed it before, or does it sound like something is wrong??

When I connect my external audio interface (apogee ensemble) to my mac pro, the mac begins to whistle...
As soon as I turn off my interface again, the whistle is away immediately . The sound is definitively coming from my mac pro and I couldn't locate the problem to a fan. I think it's maybe the firewire controller chip? When I connect my external lacie HD I have no problems at all. I have tried it on both ports on the back side with no success.
The whistle is not constantly on the same noise level. Sometimes it's away for a few seconds, it's high pitched and really annoying though. It does not matter if I playback audio or not. Nothing worked though. I experienced the whistle in the past few months sometimes but it was mostly just for a few minutes or so. But in the past few days it was constantly and it never really stopped. This drives me crazy when I have no audio playing and my room is silent !!
I have no other firewire cable (400 to 800) around to test it. Could this be the culprit also?
I have a Macbrook Pro, one generation old. In the past week, it started making a high pitched noise from the upper left hand corner, near the keyboard. When I pick the computer up and change the angle, I can eliminate the noise.
Just in the past day I noticed that in addition to this high pitched noise, periodically a much louder, different noise comes from the same area, which again, if I move the computer around, I can minimize the noise.
My guess is that there is something loose in the computer, maybe a fan? Should I bring it to apple? My computer has been running pretty slow lately, could this have anything to do with it?
It happens when the MBP wakes up from sleep. The longer it sleeps, the louder it's. Listen for it after the 1st 10 second.

I have a June 2010 17" 2.66 i7 UMBP. This is going to sound really silly and I do not really know how to describe it correctly, but it has begun to make lots of strange "Tapping/Clicking" noises. It happens quite regularly when the notebook is stationary but increase whenever the notebook is moved.
I am familiar with the hard drive clicking noise but this is totally different - it kind of sounds like a small metal ball-bearing inside a small, thin glass sphere knocking or clicking against it's side or like tapping a small thin glass object with something like a thin metal rod.
I am sorry for the poor description but that is the best way I can describe it & know I must sound like a complete idiot but I am not very savvy to computer issues but I hope someone can identify what these noises are if if they mean that something bad is going on.
Hey guys, got a little issue here. I have had a MBA since about march of this year. Just recently I on two occasions the computer has all of a sudden had this loud high pitch whine. It has only happened twice and at both times (if I remember the 1st time correctly) I wasn't really doing anything on the computer. Today specifically it was just sitting idle on my desk. Not sure where its coming from maybe speakers? Any idea to what this is? Should I be setting up an appointment to see a Mac Genius?
View 10 Replies View RelatedVery occasionally the screen on my iMac (early 08 24") goes blank and it makes an incredibly loud static sound that's independent of the volume control setting. The power then needs disconnecting to restart the machine. Haven't been able to tie it to any specific program. Apple Care asked I leave it on logged in on a new user account (at the time I originally thought it only happened in sleep mode, but have since discovered this is not the case).
It's happened maybe 3 or 4 times in the same number of months. I've only found one similar case on the net, with someone suggesting it was Safari 4 beta, which I've found not to be the case with mine. It's on extended warranty. I think there's something seriously wrong with it (it's already had the hard drive and power supply replaced).

Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari. Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button. Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted. Problem is common to all users.
