OS X :: Loud Whirring / Grinding Sound Coming
Jun 18, 2009I just bought a new 24 inch 2.66 GHz iMac off of MacMall last week (6 days ago) and it has been working fine up until a day and a half ago. You see, I put the iMac to sleep for a while, and when I woke it up there was a moderately loud (but in no way ear bashing) grinding/whirring sound coming from the left area of the machine under the screen. I now noticed that the longer I have the machine on for, the louder and more annoying it gets. Does anyone know what is there (HDD, fan or what)? Also, is this something I have to worry about or is this an issue all iMac users face? I am new to OS 10.5 and modern Macs. I am really starting to get worried about this, as the machine is almost brand new.

MacBook Pro :: Creaking, Stiff Hinge - A Loud Popping Noise Coming
Nov 11, 2009On my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back.
The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.
It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.
Mac Pro :: Fans Making Loud Noise For Few Seconds On Startup
Sep 27, 2009I just received my new Mac Pro from apple on Saturday. This thing is a beast! I am planning on running apps from Final Cut Studio 3, Photoshop, After Effects, and others. 2.66 Quad/6GB RAM (OWC)/640GB HD/ATI 4870
I have a few questions.
1.) Is it normal for the Mac Pro's fans to make a lot of noise when you first start it up or wake it from sleep? My fans make a lot of noise for about 16 seconds or so.
2.) I am planning to put a second optical drive in it. Is there a way to eject only one tray at a time, or will it do both?
Now, I am selling my iMac for around $800 and I am looking at some upgrades:
An additional 21.5" Acer LCD display
A mini display port to dvi adapter
A LG blu ray burner
Two 1TB samsung internal HDs
A blu ray player (I do not have one yet)
Elgato Eye TV hybrid
Power Mac :: G5 Fans Running And Making Loud Noise Before Crashing?
Mar 24, 2012I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think.

IMac :: Computer Making Loud Constant Noise / Sound Coming After 30 Seconds
Nov 17, 2010My family just recently upgraded from an old PC to this 27" iMac, during the early part of the summer. While using it over the last little while, I would notice a noise that sounded like a harddrive spinning or possibly some sort of a fan noise. The best way to describe it would probably be as digital noise. It's not incredibly loud, but it's a decent volume, and can get quite annoying. It has a little bit of a squeak to it.
Over the last little while, it's become more constant. When the computer is in use, it'll usually occur quite often. It's quite annoying and obtrusive when I'm watching videos and I'd like to know what it could be.I think our computer is still under warranty, so I'm hoping to find out if it is something wrong, so I can get it replaced.
I've also been wondering if it's a fan, or a regular noise. However, it's so constant that I'm starting to wonder. The other night, I was watching a video and it seemed like it was coming on every 30 seconds for a long span of time. We don't run any memory heavy programs on this computer. If anything, we're just using Firefox, iTunes and/or Messenger. Sometimes Office. There's little to nothing stored on this computer, as it's brand new, so most of its memory is free.
MacBook Air :: Have Static/noise Coming From The Speaker On It When No Audio Is Coming Out?

Jul 8, 2009here's a really stoopid question, but I'm a total novice and NOT tech savvy at all, so bear with me. Why does my 13" white macbook make a funny whirring noise sometime? It happens when I'm viewing video clips. I've only had it a couple of months. I don't know anything the inner workings of laptops. Is there something wrong with it, or is this normal?

May 12, 2008I've had my Macbook Air 1.8GHz SSD since basically the day it was announced and aside from iChat video lag and YouTube (which has only happened lately), it's been almost perfect. One of the things I particularly loved about it was how silent it was, but as of Saturday, that suddenly changed. It now makings a constant (as in, never stops as long as the Air is on) noise which sounds like a harddrive being accessed; a kind of buzzing/whirring noise. It's not particularly loud, and once about 2ft away you can no longer hear it, but it is concerning that it would suddenly start.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Failing To Boot Up - Fans Whirring Fast
Dec 16, 2008Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.
I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).
MacBook :: PISMO G3 Squealing Noise - Noise Coming From Under The Keyboard
Jul 14, 2008Has anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.
I Did the PRAM and PMU reset.I can hear it over music or the tv. It grew lower in pitch today after squealing for a half hour. I'd normally not let it go on that long, but i was
in the other room.Is my PISMO dying?

OS X :: IMac G5 Whirring Noise After Freeze?
Apr 29, 2009Yesterday I started my iMac G5 and after about 15 minutes, it froze. It's happened before but I can always move the mouse. This is the first time it has actually properly froze. After about 2 minutes, I got a very loud whirring noise. I left it for about 5 minutes and it didn't die down. It has now been left for about 24 hours with the occasional turn on to see if it's fixed. No joy. Now it won't even turn on.

May 15, 2012About 5 mins ago i rebooted my Mac, and in the boot process something started to buzz horibly. I was in a dark room, so it was very scary for me and very late too... Being scared i pushed CTRL+OPTION+SHIFT+POWER so it shut down imeaditly.
I powered it on, no buzzing. But OS X did not boot at all. Just stood there. Now I'm booting of the recovery DVDto disable my EFI pass, so i can boot verbose.

OS X :: Loud Fans On 10.6.1 MacBook Pro / Make Them Normal?
Sep 22, 2009Anyone else experiencing this? My fans have been going pretty much nonstop audibly since the 10.6 install. The "normal" for the fans is about 2000rpm, and now they RARELY dip under 3000, and the "new norm" is a very audible 4000-5000rmps.
This is SO annoying! Anyone else?

May 24, 2012I have an early 2010 MBP (13 inch) whose RAM I upgraded to 8GB and the hard drive I upgraded to 750GB.Ever since I installed OSX Lion it takes ages to boot up (far slower than Snow Leopard which booted up almost instantly from turn on).Furthermore, when running, it gets very hot when running Windows virtualisation software inside OSX (VMWare Fusion 4/Parallels Desktop 6/7 - same results) and the fans turn on and become noticeabley loud.The machine is still under Applecare Warranty, is there anything I can do myself to resolve this, especially the heat/noisy fans?Is it due to having to work harder to virtualise Windows inside OSX and so run both systems concurrently, thus requiring more resources? Â

Sep 15, 2010So I got my macbook pro yesterday and I've been doing some basic stuff on it. While I was installing World of Warcraft, the computer jumped up about 101 degrees celcius. I know I shouldn't trust istat pro 100% but still, my fans are running super loud and the computer is very hot to touch. I'm not running any heavy programs or doing any gaming. I had Aol Instant Messenger on, and WoW instaling in the background. I'd like to also add that when opening various programs I get the spinning beachball very often.

May 9, 2009I notice that while streaming a movie, watching a dvd or playing a game my hard drive fan is so loud, its annoying. I have a 2008 White Macbook and i replaced the stock hard drive with a western digital 5400rpm 320gb and I only have 1gig of ram. I have no problem replacing the hard drive for a 7200 but i just need to know if its worth it. If i were to upgrade the ram to 2gigs would that solve the problem? Is it possible to install a 500gig drive into the white macbooks?

But in both every time I play a Mkv file the fans start spinning, I think it's the fans or maybe the hard drive. But it's quite a loud whoosh all throughout the movie. Feb 10, 2010Anyways, at the moment my mac is around 6 months old and just recently I am noticing that the fan is starting to vibrate- like when I type on the mac with my palms rested on the computer I can feel the vibrations. Now it is subtle but was not there before. As I am typing this the fan is at 2000 rpm. Also, when I am not out with the computer. I hook it up to my 23 inch monitor and a portable keyboard. Now when I do this I can hear a very loud noise coming form the computer while using it as a desktop. Almost as it its straining to use it. Its not so much a violent noise as it is that the fan seems to be over working.
I dont know if I am getting paranoid or if this is a serious problem- I have a 3 year warranty from bestbuy. The small vibrations I can feel form the computer seem to be like a small issue- however my friend beside me with the same model- her mac is silent and doesn't vibrate subtly. However, I am more worried about the louder noise it makes when I hook it up at work. Like when i put the computer to sleep I can tell a substantial noise different in terms of it going silent after I put it to sleep.

Now, before I bring it into the Apple Store to have it looked at I just want to check and see if maybe I'm just being overly picky. I downloaded iStat, based on some Google searching I did on the subject and my fans are running around 2000 rpm, which I understand is normal. But in my apartment, which is admittedly quiet, I can hear my fan running constantly. It isn't extremely loud, but it isn't totally quiet either. I'm just wondering what level of noise I should reasonably expect out of my Macbook.
