For the past month, every time a launch system preferences it takes several seconds to load. Then, when I go into desktop/screensaver it takes a long time to load. So I open activity monitor, and when system preferences is open, its using 22mb but as soon as I open desktop/screensaver, it shoots up to 735mb and goes to 45% on the user usage. I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure if this is normal or if my ram is going bad.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I have documents open and I walk away for a few minutes, when I come back and resume working, my computer freezes up and the little pinwheel starts spinning. I literally have to unplug it to get out of this frozen state. This has been getting progressively worse over the past three months. They told me to add more memory, which I did. However, the problem persists. Do you know why my computer would freeze up after the screen has had no activity for just a few minutes? My screen saver is set for an hour so I know this is not the problem.

I'll be ordering RAM from OWC for hex core 3.33 mac pro in the next few days. I can't spend $1k at once on 24GB, so I'm thinking of getting just 2x8GB for now and get the extra stick in about 2 months or so.
I know theres about 25% or so theoretical bandwidth loss with just two sticks, but what's the real, noticeable performance hit vs 3...if there is any?
I've looked around but can only find 1GB chips for the original 20" Intel iMac. I'd like to upgrade to 4GB (2x2GB) if possible.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI tried to purchase a 8 gb upgrade kit from owc. The first set of 2x4 gb ram modules gave me kernal panics in every configuration. I sent them back and they sent me another one that was bad. I have a fourth coming in the morning tomorrow, and I am not confident that it will work either. The 4gb of stock apple ram function fine. I ran an extended apple hardware test and my systems supposedly functions normally.
I have a 17" unibody 2.93.
Is it OK to use two different size ram sticks if they are the same type/speed?
Say I wanted to fit a 1gb and a 2gb stick into my macbook, but both were 667MHz DDR2, would that cause harm to my system?
Last night Lloyd Chambers of [URL] tweaked his DigLloydTools app (DLT) that we use to test memory throughput. It's now more accurate. The bad news is that it showed that when we put 8 sticks of memory in the 8-core 2.26GHz Nehalem, our throughput for memory read/write (memmove) dropped by 1/3. It turns a triple channel memory bus into a dual channel memory bus.
Specifically, in our test, the combined read/write throughput dropped from 9261MB/s to 6195MB/s when we went from 6x2GB to 8x2GB configuration.
Now, don't panic. That doesn't necessarily affect real world app performance unless the particular app you are running is saturating the memory bus. Which apps saturate? I don't know yet. I'm running our complete real world test suite including Pro Apps and 3D Games in both the 12G and 16G config. If I find anything that's significantly slowed by the 8x2G config, I'll post it here as well as on Bare Feats.
We just got an extra gig of ram, I put it in the iMac, but it sticks out like 1-2 mm more than the stick already in there. Is that a problem? Or is it just different to the one already in there.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi deleted the music off of the usb using my mac, then ejected my usb. When I put it back into my windows pc it said the memory was full. I then put it back into my mac and the files appeared in the Trash so i deleted them. Now there was nothing im my trash, and as soon as i put my usb in there was an old cv which i had deleted of my usb a month ago I don't understand why the files are in the trash when only the usb is plugged in, does this mean that the deleted file is on my mac or usb? and also what is the relationship between mac and usb stick?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am considering purchasing a Mac Pro, probably at the begining of next year when the newer models have (hopefully) been released.
My plan is to get the standard model with Dual 2.8GHz Quad-cores (though this could all change with the new systems) and the lowest memory option - 2GB DDR2.
I plan to upgrade the RAM myself using memory from another supplier such as crucial. I have done this in the past with my macbook (taking it from 1Gb to 2Gb). When I did this I found that apple had installed 2x512Mb sticks from the factory which meant I had to buy 2x1Gb sticks rather than just adding a single 1Gb stick.
My question is, is there any way of telling what I will recieve from apple if I order 2Gb or is it the luck of the draw? i.e. will I get 1x2Gb or 2x1Gb etc etc...
The reason I ask is that I would prefer to use the single 4Gb sticks when I come to upgrade maximise the amount of RAM I can install.
I found the "reture/enter" key on my MBA keyboard stands somehow higher than other keys, and not sure if the key would touch the screen when closing the lid. Is there any problem with it and is it the same on your MBA?

I just bought this macbook off a friend cause he said he couldn't get it to work so what happens is when i push the f key it types a "" like if i push the option+f. when i bring up the keyboard viewer when i press the left option key it seems like it auto puts a "" on the screen and looks like it presses like 4 other keys but if I press the right option key it does nothing if i press right option+f does nothing but works with everything else. just dont know if maybe someone waste some water in it or something cause the left tab key and capslock key sticks sometimes also.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI am trying to upgrade the RAM in my white macbook from 2 GB to 4GB using the RAM from a Sony VAIO laptop. If I put both 2 GB sticks from the other laptop in, my computer turns on but does not boot. The screen never turns on. If i have one of the original sticks in, and one of the new sticks in, it boots up fine and the system profiler recognizes the new RAM and says it is in working order. Why can't I boot with both sticks in? They are both DDR2 667MHz sticks and are all working.

New imac is running sweet. However, I see the pinwheel at times when I never do on my 13" MacBook Pro. I see it in two instances. First, when accessing the screen saver settings in system preferences. I do have over 9,000 photos and have the screen saver set to shuffle. Maybe that's the issue? I also see the pinwheel when waking up the computer from sleep. It could be the LED screen lights up so quickly now, the processor has to catch up? I have not done a reinstall of 10.6.2 and have installed Parallels and Windows 7. Anybody else having similar symptoms?

Am I putting it in the wrong way or do I need to buy something extra to get them to work on my mac?
I am going to buy an Imac soon. Most likely the with 4 gig ram. I was just wondering how many memory slots does an 24 inch Imac have. Because I have 2 one gig ram sticks that I wanted to add to it and didnt know how many free slots it would have.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have three 16gb USB memory sticks that don't work correctly with Snow Leopard. Disk Utility is will only format them in FAT32 format and I'm unable to successfully copy files to and from the sticks.
They work perfectly fine under Windows in Boot Camp and also on my Windows based laptop. Sadly, I purchased them after I had installed Snow Leopard and I don't have access to another Mac with an earlier copy of Mac OS X to test them.
Is this most likely a Snow Leopard anomaly do you think or is it just that these sticks are not OS X compatible?
My Safari window on my iMac keeps opening but then the pages won't load fully - for eg, the start page comes up with the apple homepage which starts highlighting blue as if it were opening but then sticks halfway through this process.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThis has been ongoing since I upgraded to Safari 4.0 in my new uMBP 17" running 10.5. Since then I've upgraded Safari to the most recent 4.0.3 always hoping this issue will get fixed. Instead it is happening more and more frequently. Because it could be a number of things I've avoided posting here about it. Yesterday I upgraded to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) hoping that would resolve it but no. At this point I can't stand it and want to throw my machine out the window. Here's the specifics. The spinning pinwheel of frustration lasts anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute, expect after I upgraded to 10.6-- now sometimes after a minute I force quit from frustration. I run Little Snitch and always deny random things on Yahoo mail so perhaps denying some of these things cause it. I also run a lot of RAM intense software (AE, FCP) very often and thought this could take a toll, but this happens even after a fresh restart with only Safari being the only application running or even opened. I have 4Gb RAM. It's so frustrating I'll probably go back to Firefox but thought maybe this has come up before.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had a 2.4G MBP with 4G ram that I used for about a year. I bought an Intel 128GB SSD and used the optibay to install. I'm using the HD to store the home folder, and all applications and OSX on the SSD. The MBP started getting really laggy here lately, I see a pinwheel for about 60 seconds when I use "Save as" or try and print something. So I bought a 2.8G 17" MBP with 4G ram, hoping it was a hardware issue. I swapped both drives into the new MBP, but am having the same issues. I use a lot of different softwares (office '08, xcode, parallels, quickbooks, etc...) so its hard to pinpoint it down to a specific application. I am going to wipe the MBP clean and start over, but what is the best route? Should I just backup the home folder, reinstall all software then put back the home folder? I want to avoid copying the problem, but can't afford to lose all of my application data.
