i just updated from 10.5.1 to 10.5.8 with the combo update. it now will just hang at the apple logo. i have a dual boot on the same drive with 10.4.11 thus i am able to post this.. disk utility finds no errors. reinstalling is last resort..
ibook g4, 1.2ghz, 1.25gb, 80gb.
My Software Update has suddenly stopped working. It hangs at "Checking for new software" and the progress bar is at about 10%. I've searched all over and have done a few things, but can't seem to get it working. I've tried removing com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist and removing everything in /Library/Updates. I've tried clearing cache files and repairing permissions (via Cocktail.) I've used Disk Utility to check my drive for errors and it didn't find anything. I also ran the hardware test on my original Tiger restore disc and that didn't find any errors. It is similar to this thread: [URL]. I've tried just about everything I can find and can't get it to work.

I have a much loved ibook G4 14" (late 2004??). It has just died. Well, in so much as it won't boot up. The ibook either gets as far as the apple grey screen and hangs, gets to the login screen and hangs, actually loads up finder etc and hangs or none of the above. Sometimes flashing red, blue green black.
After lots of research online over the past few days I tried the following: I have tried safe mode (not working), starting the command prompt screen (single user and verbose modes), started open firmware, and tried booting from a CD. Nothing works as the boot gets so far then hangs. I have flashed the PRam, resetted the NVRam, and have stopped short of opening up the case to dismantle it!
I just really want to access the hard drive now. I have tried Target disk mode and linked the ibook (pressing T) via firewire to a PowerPC G5, but the G5 doesn't recognise the ibook. System profiler on the G5 shows the target mode connected and working fine via firewire, just the icon for the ibook/target doesnt mount on the G5 desktop so I cant access it.Currently the boot freezes within a couple of minutes.I tried the hardware test CD that came with the ibook years ago, I have also tried booting from an OSX Panther CD. I'm assuming they would be bootable.
I forgot to mention that in linking with the G5 in target mode, a disk that I put in the ibook drive appeared on the G5 desktop as an external drive, therefore I wonder why i cannot see the actual ibook drive mounted. The CD drive works as it mounted on the G5.Does the ibook have an actual PRam battery that can be replaced? Maybe this is an issue?Am I able to actually remove the hard-drive and access it as an external drive somehow?
I am using Stata, a statistical analysis program. Recently, when I try to open a file, using File Open, the program hangs and I have to force it to quit. I can open files easily if I use Recent files. When the file gets open, I can do everything I should be able to do with the program. Analysis, graphics, etc. It is JUST when I do File Open that it hangs, and it seems to be ONLY with Stata.

I am experiencing problems with the installation process for the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update. Although Software Update presents the appropriate update file, I am experiencing hangs resulting in the update never completing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2009 8-core running Lion. It has now starting hanging (desktop visible but no response to any input device). I have run Disk Utility and Apple Hardware Test from install DVD (full test) and it finds no issues. Any thoughts as to how to investigate further. Sounds like a memory leak in an app somewhere, but none are left runnIng.Machine is ok when being used but then is hung when left for a few hours. If I take to Genius Bar I assume they will run AHT and say no faults can be found.

I have a MacBook Pro 2.16 C2D that I just updated with Leopard. I noticed that occasionally the computer will hang when I attempt a shutdown. I didn't have this problem with Tiger so I assume it's a bug in Leopard. When I try a normal shutdown all I see is my desktop wallpaper and that little circular animated icon. I have to hold in the power button to force a shutdown.
View 24 Replies View RelatedEarly in the upgrade progress bar, where it says: "Configuring Installation", with less than 3 or 4mm of progress on the progress bar (18" screen, 1280x1024), it just hangs. It sits there and does nothing more. Both on my PowerMac G5 and my brand new Mac mini. If I wait for forever, and then power down, and restart, it starts right back up in to 10.5.5, and software update will tell me it wants to install 10.5.6.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a iMac(20") for about a year now and its ran great up untill now. It is hanging on boot. Sometimes its the white screen with apple logo and spinning gear, other times the screen goes blue and i can see it load a mouse cursor for about 2 seconds, then the screen goes through a few shades of blue and the spinning gear re-apears with no apple logo. The computer then loops. I tried to boot to safe mode, but as i have the sound off i am not sure i am holding the shift key at teh proper moment. If anyone has any advice, please, please let me know. my mac reinstall cd is about 8hrs drive from where i am, and i do not know if mac issues replacement cd's.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got my MBP running the iTunes cover art as the screen saver, and to lock the computer when it goes into the screen saver. Every once and awhile, it'll hang when I try to bring it out of the screen saver to put my password in. The screensaver will be playing, then I wiggle the mouse, and the screen goes black, as it does normally followed by the username/password box.
But that box never shows up, just the cursor and a black screen. It's not every single time either, kinda intermittent. I've had to do a hard power down to get out of it, unfortunately. This doesn't cause any file corruption, does it? Anyway I've now set my firewall to allow incoming SSH connections only from my user, so that at least I can SSH into it from my iPod Touch, should it happen again.
I was downloading a couple of software upgrades onto my Mini -- the latest version of Safari and a security app of some sort -- when I suddenly lost power. On getting the electricity flowing again, I retstarted the Mini, but it's hung on the opening gray Apple display -- the spinny thing just keeps on spinning, and I get the feeling it's not going to stop. Did the power outage in mid-upgrade screw my Mini beyond all un-screwing? Should I try putting it in Target mode and running Disk Utility on it from my iBook? What should I do?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMacBook hangs on certain websites (yahoo mail, cbs sports, mens fraternity) but only from one of my wireless networks. PC works flawlessly on this situation and macbook works flawlessly on my first wireless router so the problem is tied to the interaction between my Macbook and the second wireless router. I've searched the forums and tried many fixes already that have been posted here or elsewhere: Reset Safari (it then allows me to reach yahoo mail once, hangs on every try thereafter). Go to Safari preferences and uncheck the box for warning of fraudulent sites (no change) Go to advanced settings and input DNS numbers from my ISP (this solved the problem for some websites but not others) try firefox (same problem as safari) software update everything (no help) install onyx (about to do that). network is a DSL modem connected to the first wireless router (DLINK N+). Second wireless router is linksys G (the problem child) and it is hardwire connected to first wireless router.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a used Macbook Pro (A1212). I received it with no battery (on the way), and a dead harddrive (booted to folder question mark). I replaced the hard drive with a new one and tried booting up the DVD. When pressing option during startup, I'm given the option to boot the dvd. I click on it and I can hear the DVD whirr for a couple minutes, apple logo shows up, then a loading circle on the bottom of it, eventually the logo turns into a Deny Circle. What could this mean? The DVD is in tip top condition.

I have upgraded 4 macs (iMac 24"; MBP 17 and MBP 15 and iBook) for 10 days+. Now MBP 17 (4GB RAM) having serious issues with DOCK; Expose and Spaces.
- Dock hangs when I try to open Mail then disappears until I reboot.
- Expose and Spaces do not work -have had to swtich them off as they lose all their settings.
Reinstalled from scratch and everything was well for 3 days now back to same problems.
- Also in Dock preference setting. I cannot activate "Automatically Hide and Show". The setting will not activate at all.
- Command (Apple) + Tab = Application Switcher will not work!
So without the Dock, I have to go to Applications (in Finder) or Recent Items to launch apps! All 4 machines I upgrade are similar except for CPU, RAM and Hard-disk size. Running same apps (except for Aperature on MBP 17 on the culprit machine!)
Unexpected power loss while browsing with Safari V4.0Beta (unrelated problem) left me in a state where I can no longer run any version of Safari. I have already restored (via time machine)my entire Library twice with no effect. Other users on this iMac G5 can run Safari with no problem. This appears to be some form of intentional lock out... Somewhat like a parent lock, but parental controls are not being used. In addition, this is the only admin account (I'm the primary user) so I don't make a habit of telling myself I can't use an application. Bottom line: When I invoke Safari, the URL never changes and I am stuck with the spinning colorwheel and an empty white Safari screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was working on my iMac (last year's model) today and the finder hung up (beach ball spinning). I force quit the finder, but it then refused to relaunch (although I could use other programs as before). I then tried to restart the computer but couldn't, and had to force the power off by holding the power button for a few seconds. Now when the computer starts up, it gets to the point where the "loading wheel" (with external spokes) starts turning, but then this "wheel" freezes. I put in my TechTool Pro 5 disc to start it up from that, but the same thing happens (yes, I have been holding down "C" when it starts to make sure that it uses it as a start-up disc). I am at a total loss, and live far from any computer repair store.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having an issue where the superdrive in my BRAND NEW mac pro isn't working correctly. It doesn't read DVD's consistently, System profiler hangs when you click on disc burning and after that the drive does not respond to eject commands. When you do get the tray to open, insert a DVD that is a known good disc, it will "mount" on the desktop then when you click on it, it hangs trying to read the disc. When you right click and select eject, the icon just goes away and the disc does not eject. A restart at least allows me to eject the disc. Resetting SMC has no effect on the drives behaviour. Or suggest a good aftermarket DVD drive?
