When I reboot, I hear an odd "clunk" that sounds like something in the front of the case. It occurs right the black screen at the beginning, before the screen turns grey and the apple logo appears. If you don't know what I'm talking about, reboot and let me know if you hear anything like this.
View 14 RepliesWhen surfing the net (like right now) or just letting it idle, my hard drive makes a slight "clunk" sound like the HD arm is hitting the edge of the case (or maybe starting up and shutting down?). There seems to be no loss of performance. I did a disk verify and everything is OK. Should I be concerned?

The last time I used it was when I was playing starcraftII and I shut down without removing the CD like I usually do. But this time when I startup the iMac does not boot up. I have tried resetting the SMC and it didn't work. I pressed down the mouse while startup and the CD didn't come out but I started to hear these beep tones, when I startup now. Thought it might be the memory card so removed them and tried starting up without them and then tried one by one and I still getting the beep tones, will I lose my hardisk as well if I keep rebooting too many times like this? How to get the CD out and startup the iMac properly?

So my second power adapter for my Powerbook is dead (it replaced the original via applecare). I have had problems with it and even have tripped on the cord while plugged in thereby probably damaging it. I have heard the usual sparking sounds and have recently saw the blue spark ignite from the plug while out of the powerbook and in order to get green/orange connection light I've had to twist the plug until it lights up. After reading other people's problems I decided to look at the plug and noticed that the metal is stripped all around the main plug as you can see in the picture. So I am down to my backup (purchased before asking if applecare covered power adapters) which has the exact same problems.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI admit that the question is not really clear. But here is the list of events:
1) Nov 2010: my MacBook Pro 13-inch on OS 10.6.8 from mid-2010 (2.66GHz core2 duo with 8G RAM) did not wake up from sleep when clamshell was opened. I called Apple Care and did SMC reset and the matter seemed to be resolved.
2) Jan 03 2012: Same issue happened. Same call to Apple and same SMC reset. Matter seemed resolved.
3) April 10 2012: Same issue happened. Apple Care recommented OS reinstallation.
4) April 12 2012: Performed Mac OS 10.6 reinstallation using the factory disc. No hiccups during installation. Performed software update afterwards (update package 10.6.8 combo v1.1) . No problems detected. Performed permission repair (disk utility). Then rebooted the computer. Here is the problem: Upon rebooting the computer, the sound volume setting was on low (1/4 of the max). I switched it to max. I rebooted the computer to reset PRAM.
Upon reboot, the sound volume was still on low (1/4 of max). I called Apple care, deleted the 2 plist files in library/preferences/audio, switched the volume to maximum and then rebooted the mac. Upon reboot, the sound volume remained on low setting (1/4 of max).
5) I did another OS reinstallation and software update. Same thing all over.

Using my Mac earlier today I lost all sound output, and attempted to reboot it to try and fix the problem. Now instead of booting it's stuck on the white loading screen. I've tried turning it off and on again from here, but I still get the same result.

I bought a MBP 15 inch 2.66ghz brand new back in september. Since my purchase i have has several things that have been annoying the crap out of me.
Issues:
1. Clunk noise coming from HD, I have read some posts and installed Hdapm which reduced the sound a bit (i have the 320gb 5400rpm Fujitsu)
2. I believe becuz of the clunking (parking of the heads) causes my computer to stutter (mini freeze for like 1-2 secs) while using my MBP..
3. The battery used notify me that i had PLENTY of time to use even when i had below 50% battery life left, now (on Firmware 1.6) the battery tells me i usually have like 2:30mins of use when im at 85% or so battery strength left. and YES the screen is dimmed along with the keys.(i have calibrated the battery also)
I went back to 1.6 firmware due to the notion that various people have had better success on their harddrives working "better" with stock, or aftermarket.
I am on a CLEAN install of Snow Leopard...
I've just purchased a wired Apple keyboard for my mac mini. I'm moving from el cheapo to the wired keyboard.Its nice, the keys are silent but the space bar produces a clunk sound when depressed.Is that normal? As the other keys are silent.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe last two days I have woken up and started my G4, and I hear an odd noise. I hear my drives spin up, but it takes probably 15 seconds for the Apple to show up on the grey bootscreen, after the first Chime I hear a 2nd noise from the internal speaker that I can't really describe? I can also hear a weird noise that sounds like rubbing or something if I listen very closely. Maybe this is a dust build up on the fan. Disk Utility says both of my drives are fine, and my computer is running fine. I'm just kind of confused here.. Should I pick up some canned air and clean out the computer a bit?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI managed to get a CD, possibly 2 if my niece stuck one in too, in my Macbook. I have no idea if there was one in there when I put my blank CD in but I know its possible to have 2 stuck in there, and with the problems I'm having I wouldn't be surprised. My mac doesn't recognize that their is a CD in the drive, no icon, itunes doesn't recognize its there, nothing. I can hold down eject button and nothing happens. The only time I get a response is every time I turn my computer on or awake it from sleep it tries to, at least this is what I assume its doing, to eject the CD.
When it does this is makes the most horrible noise you've ever heard for about 10 seconds then stops. It's almost like a tune, different horrible notes being screeched from my poor computer. I have tried absolutely everything. The cardboard, the business card, pressing spacebar at start up, tilting it, every trick I have googled has not worked. Any experts out there with new ideas? I would love to be able to turn my computer on without it screaming at me every time...and a functional CD drive would be a plus too.
I bought my MacBook in December, just recently when trying to power up I get strange beep and it will not go on. I shut down by using the power button, wait a few moments, power it back up and it comes on.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo the first time it did it was I think two days ago and I was doing something in Mail, when all of a sudden 'Beep', it's not really high pitched, and lasts about a second or less, and then it did it again about 30 seconds later. Now it's doing it frequently. Is it bad? A sign of impending doom? Used the Applecare TechTool Deluxe and everything passed. Also, it isn't always beeping, sometimes it's silent, for ages, then it'll beep and beep for a while, then quiet again.

View 4 Replies View RelatedBackground Info: Earlier today, I experienced a what I am 99.9% sure was a hard drive crash on my white MacBook (about 36 months old). Everything stopped responding, and I heard a clicking noise coming from where the the hard drive is located. I forced a shutdown by holding down the power button, and tried to reboot, only to be greeted by the little question mark folder and the clicking sound. Fortunately, I had just backed it up the previous night, so I knew I hadn't lost anything of value. Then, about an hour ago, a made another attempted to start it up again, and to my surprise, was greeted by no clicking and an logo.
Actual Questions:
I am guessing this is not a one time occurrence, and that the noise and another crash will be back, am I correct? If so, does anyone have any guess on how long until it does return, and ultimately, how long can I put off my trip to the genius bar?
My girlfriend recently bought a 17" Unibody MacBook Pro (the one with the built-in battery). Yesterday, we noticed that the computer was making a noise from the left-hand side. It sounds like the hard-disk accessing information. Pretty much the sound all PC's make, however, we had never heard the machine make the noise before. She has had the computer for about 2 months. Our concern is primarily because my older 15" MBP Unibody is virtually silent and never makes a similar noise.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009. I got my new MBP 15" one month ago, I noticed a noise coming from underneath the touch-pad. The noise sounds like a loose small piece of metal cracking there. When I hear this noise:
- when the laptop is on my legs/bed/couch and I move it a little bit.
- when I tab on the aluminum around the touchpad.
I hear the noise more frequently day after day. I noticed that when I shake the laptop (shuted down) with the lid opened I hear the noise way more than with the lid closed. My laptop is new, its case never opened. I thought of the following:
- Something wrong with the thing that adjust the touchpad click (if it exists)
- There is a free screw moving there (maybe while assembling the laptop they accidentally dropped the screw).
Basically, I have noticed that sometimes if I put pressure (not really hard or anything just like if I lean my wrist on it when typing) on the bottom right corner of the macbook, it makes a clicking sound when I press it. It sounds to me like something is bending when I press down there. It doesn't always click consistently, and sometimes I have to press in different places to get it to click.
I only noticed it when I applied a gelaskin to the top and was rubbing it to get the bubbles out and noticed when I rubbed over that corner it would make a clicking sound. Its really weird and I don't want my macbook to die as I'm already on my second one this year! I have backed up the hard drive as I have been told that the hard drive is in that corner but I have no idea if thats the problem or not. It seems to be that something is loose but I don't know what or how!!
I am the proud new owner of a core i5 MBP! I am loving it a lot so far, but I have noticed something a bit odd, every once in a while I hear a little clicking noise inside the computer, when I'm moving it and when it is sitting still. The sound is for sure coming from inside the computer. Could this be something wrong with the inside It's not a gigantic problem, just a minor annoyance and I want to make sure that nothing is wrong!

About 5 minutes later I was watching a youtube video and the grinding got louder to the point where I could no longer hear the video. I immediately powered the iMac down and upon reboot process, the grinding sound could be heard again. After the booting process, the sound is gone. I am wondering what it was and if I should waste my time taking it in to an Apple Repair Shop

A: The genre is AudioBooks.
B: The playcount is 0.
C: Pick 25 at random
D: Include partially played books.
The latter is the show stopper. How do I make sure that a book I started to listen to one time is still on the playlist the next time after I sync my phone. I'm willing to have a second playlist of "Books in progress" If it can't be done directly any pointers to an applescript for this?

Just got my new i7 in the mail today after waiting for the refresh for 5 months and it has that stupid high pitched noise that you get when you adjust the brightness. I returned four of these things at the beginning of the year (2 HD failures, 1 power source failure, 1 DOA), one that had the hd failure also had this same high pitched noise.
I love these computers (minus the complete lack of quality control), so I don't want to switch back to PC, but I am at my wits end here. Apple already gave me $150 off this computer for me trouble, but I just don't know if its worth the hassle anymore. I am returning it for sure, but would you ask for more compensation, maybe a ram upgrade or something? I don't like to be the guy who asks for free crap, but the way I see it, they can give me another hundred $, or I can go back to pc and they lose a customer for life.
I had sound on my computer last night but when turning on this morning there was no sound. It is not muted. Also, when I try to run an event in IPhoto as a slide show, it shuts down.

This started happening randomly earlier tonight, and I haven't managed to find a fix just yet.I was encoding a video file for quite awhile (I don't think that parts important, but I thought I'd include it anyway) and then I tried to play a youtube video. I noticed there was no sound, so I tried to up the volume using the Volume Up key on the keyboard. The volume visualisation appeared on the screen like normal (albeit a bit laggy), but the sound still didn't change, neither did I get the usual 'click' noise you get when you change the volume.I went looking into the sound options in the system prefs. only to find that the Output Sound device was headphones. For a test I plugged in some headphones to see what happened and, low and behold, the Output Sound device changed to the Internal Sound and my speakers were working again, but only with the headphones plugged in.
