Hardware :: Sparking Sound Heard From Stripped Power Adapter
Mar 6, 2010
So my second power adapter for my Powerbook is dead (it replaced the original via applecare). I have had problems with it and even have tripped on the cord while plugged in thereby probably damaging it. I have heard the usual sparking sounds and have recently saw the blue spark ignite from the plug while out of the powerbook and in order to get green/orange connection light I've had to twist the plug until it lights up. After reading other people's problems I decided to look at the plug and noticed that the metal is stripped all around the main plug as you can see in the picture. So I am down to my backup (purchased before asking if applecare covered power adapters) which has the exact same problems.

I have a youtube video that is a tribute/interview of my grandmother, who unfortunately just passed away. YouTube has stripped the audio because on some parts of the video there is background music. I would really like to be able to watch/download this video with the audio - does anyone know a way to get around this?
fwiw: I don't have the original file, and downloading the video via pwnYouTube results in a silent mp4 file.

When I reboot, I hear an odd "clunk" that sounds like something in the front of the case. It occurs right the black screen at the beginning, before the screen turns grey and the apple logo appears. If you don't know what I'm talking about, reboot and let me know if you hear anything like this.

I just got my MacBook pro last month and sometimes I hear this sound for like a second. I don't know how to describe it. It's like a little clicking sound. It can happen when I'm online or sometimes when I close the macbook.

Am hearing a beep tone every 5 seconds when I startup my iMac computer. It is on macosx.
The last time I used it was when I was playing starcraftII and I shut down without removing the CD like I usually do. But this time when I startup the iMac does not boot up. I have tried resetting the SMC and it didn't work. I pressed down the mouse while startup and the CD didn't come out but I started to hear these beep tones, when I startup now. Thought it might be the memory card so removed them and tried starting up without them and then tried one by one and I still getting the beep tones, will I lose my hardisk as well if I keep rebooting too many times like this? How to get the CD out and startup the iMac properly?

I recently discovered my computer had died while it was sleeping. I tried charging it but am recieving the "Battery not charging, power source: power adapter" status. My power cord light is green, always. and the computer dies instantly when I remove the magsafe.
I've tried the "remove the battery, press the power button, plug in the magsafe" troubleshooting process, but it doesn't work.I've noticed that even with the battery out, the charger reads a green light.I've tried several outlets with the same results. Here are my battery stats

I've just purchased a Mini Display Port to HDMI Adaptor, The picture is great, quality is super, however I can only here sound through my Macbook pro. I know my MBP supports sound through HDMI, I've checked System Information and under Audio built in, there is HDMI Display port output. I don't know how to tell MBP to play sound through HDMI.

I am thinking about buying this adapter for my macbook so i can connect my macbook to a TV. I know that if you connect a minidisplay port to a TV it doesn't transfer the computers sound to the TV speakers. Would this display connection through the USB port transfer sound to a TV.
This is really what I'm looking for in a connector because it would be nice to not have to set up the sound separate from the video.

pretty new to the Mac side of things. I got my MBP about 3 weeks ago I think. I got a mini display to hdmi adapter (off ebay, so this may be the problem). I hooked it up to my laptop and tv and it took me a while to find the mirroring box but I got that working so what's on my computer pops up on the tv. I go to play a tv show, and the sound is just on my computer. I went under system pref and sound but only "internal speakers" is available for the output. Am I doing something wrong? Or do I just have a cheap adapter?

Don't want to ask the Apple Store since they'll just tell me I can't, but can I use the 85W power adapter that came with the 15"MBP on the new Air with no damage? Ok, to use in a pinch?
Hmmm, how about the other way around (using a 45W power adapter on the 15"), I am thinking "no damage" just that it would take longer to re-charge?

I have both a MacBook (personal) and MacBook Pro (work; provided by NASA). The MacBook has a 60W Magsafe Power Adapter; the MacBook Pro has a 75W power adapter. I am going on international travel for several weeks, do I need to bring both adapters with me? Would there be any problems caused by using a higher-power (75W) power adapter to charge a MacBook or vice versa?

I had an extra 45w power adapter in my office; which I used to use with my Macbook Air. So today, I mated it to my new i7 MBP15 and was expecting it not to work because of insufficient power. But it seems to work just fine.
Is there any harm in using the 45w power adapter at work and the 85w adapter on the roadhome? I'm assuming the 45w adapter just wont charge the battery as fast.

I have a 12" Powerbook 1 ghz (yes, it's getting old) running Tiger. When it's turned off, it charges just fine. However, when the computer is on, the power from the adapter keeps cycling on and off. For example, the lighted band around the power adapter tip switches from orange to off (NOT to green) repeatedly: about 3-4 seconds with power (lighted band is orange, screen backlight is bright, and if I'm in the Energy Saver section of the System Preferences, it thinks it's plugged in) and about 1 second with no power (lighted band is off, screen backlight dims, and if I'm in Energy Saver area, the computer thinks it's on battery power.
This is irritating because 1) the computer won't charge when on, and 2) as I type this, the screen goes from bright to dim to bright to dim etc.
Obvious answer is the power adapter, but I don't have access to another. What does everyone think? is it the adapter or some other problem?
FWIW, the internal hard drive just died and I'm booting from an external FireWire drive. It started doing this power thing a few days before the internal hard drive died.

this might have been discussed before, but I just cannot find a threat about it: May I use my old 85W Brick of my older 15″ for the new unibody 13" Macbook Pro? The MacSafe Adapter certainly fits. But is ist safe to use it ?

I have a Macbook that is nearly three years old, and I'm on my second power cord. The first time I had trouble, the casing had melted off right next to the MagSafe part that plugs into the computer. I got another, and now it seems it won't charge at all. There is no apparent physical damage. At first, I could do a little jiggery pokery and if I got it in just the right place, it would charge. It seems that now even that is gone. I'm wondering if: 1. There is some obvious fix that I am missing, or 2. Where I can get an affordable replacement. I realised this makes it sound as if my current cord is brand new, that is not the case. It is about a year old.
