Starting today, when I try and write anything to my non-OS harddrive (with my music library and data on it), OSX gives me the error: "The data can't be read or written" The permissions seem to be fine. I can open files on the HD fine, but they open a little slow. So basically I only can't write to the drive. What's going on? Is my HD dying?

What is the standard tool to test your hard drives read/write speeds? I'd like to test my new SSD to see how fast it really is. I've heard you cant trust XBench for that which is the only thing I have to use.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba 250GB external hard drive to back up pictures. I can write to it just fine. I also have a Fantom Drive 1TB external. I could write to it last week, but I turned it on this week and I can't write to it. I can still pull stuff off of it, but I can't write to it. What can be causing this? I have already installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G. It doesn't make sense to me that I can't write to it all of the sudden.

I installed Parallels Desktop 5, Windows XP, and several Windows apps to have dual functionality. Now I need to write to my NTFS ext. hard drive where I backup everything. It has 800gb of space left, so it would be a shame to get a new one just b/c I have a Mac now. I first installed MacFuse and then NTFS-3G. Now when I reboot, the ext. HD won't mount at all. What have I done wrong?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe one response I had was: 'alex try putting your mac os cd in and restart the system holding down the letter d key and let me know what happens.' unfortunately I can't find my system disc... will I need to buy a new one? here's a the problem: I have a PPC G5 iMac 2.1GHz, 1.5GB. The Internal Hard drive is 250GB in total and partitioned into 4 sections. After working fine for ages I suddenly found I can't copy files into one of the partitions. Initially I got an error message saying: "DS_store could not be tead or written. (Error code 36)" I used Disk Utility to clean up the hard drive. Which didn't help. Got a copy of Disk Warrior(4.1) to try a more effective clean up. There were a few errors that found and fixed, but i still got the same error message. Then found a utility called DS_Store Cleaner to try and force it to remake the DS_Store files. This got rd of the DS_Store message but I'm still left with another error 36 message and still unable to properly copy. The message then said: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "example file.doc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
I have also got hold of a copy of techtool pro (4.6.1) and run everything - basic, intermediate and advance scans. Everything (aside from a few minor errors on other partitions - which it cleared up easily) was fine, that partition showed no errors at all. I didn't do the full tests on the system partition though as I haven't used the e-drive function yet. The problem has been ongoing since late March.Just today I found the same problem in another of my partitions: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "example file.doc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).This happens when trying to copy to either of those partitions or trying to save anything to either of them.What might be causing this and what should I do next? with the first partition to have problems I am unable to copy/write any file size (eg KB size files) with the most recent partition I found I could copy a 2.3MB Jpeg. The problem occured when I tried to copy a 680MB .mov file (there was enough space - about 1.8GB)

I have a late 2009 MacBook pro, running the latest version of Lion. Last week, I experienced a Kernel panic at start up, and was unable to launch the OS, even with the recovery boot. Starting in verbose told me that there was a sata issue. I opened the computer, replaced the internal hard drive with lion set upon it, and tried to start again, without any success. I bought a SATA-USB cable to plug my old hard drive. My computer is now running normally, but with the former internal hard drive plugged in USB.
Disk manager sees the new one and I can read data written upon it, but I can't write anything nor erase or partition it. So both the hard drives are OK (I tested them in a friend's MacBook pro and it worked), the computer seems OK too, because I'm running it presently, but any internal hard drive won't work. The cable that links the hard drive to the motherboard does not seem to be damaged, however, the status indicator light is not working since that time.

I recently borrowed my brother's laptop to use as a media station for listening to music from, and watching movies, in order to free up some space on my main macbook. In trying to migrate some files over, I discovered that my hard drive, a 320 GB WD Elements drive, is having some problems which I've never encountered before. It has always worked fine in the past, but now I can't transfer any files to or from it, from either computer. In all of my troubleshooting, I've gotten various errors, (-36, -50), and various messages saying how the device can't be read or written from, or how some files contian unreadable data, etc.Disk Utility found an unused node when verifying the disk, and notified me that the disk needed to be repaired.I then used Disk Utility, which said it was able to successfully repair it, but the same problem remains, and after verifying the disk, it still says it needs to be repaired.I've tried to find any files that may be causing the problem, and was finally able to delete a seemingly troublesome file that was stuck in my trash bin from the external drive after trying various apps, (ie Trash It, Cocktail, What's Keeping Me?).This didn't end up solving anything...I've used terminal to eliminate some other potentially problematic files, with no luck still, and I'm not too confident with Terminal so I don't want to be messing around too much without more guidance.
I've used Disk Warrior to try to solve the problem, but still with no success.When I use the app to Check All Files and Folders, it does so for only a few seconds, then reports that "An unexpected error ocurred while attempting to perform file operations" for several files, and that several files' "Property list is damaged and cannot be repaired". When using Disk Warrior to REBUILD the drive, the app pauses for about 15 seconds, then says that it can't be rebuilt because it is in use.Again, I've used the What's Keeping Me? app to kill any activity with the drive, and the same error occurs.I've spent a lot of time trying to sort this out.

I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD.
When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??
Admittedly new to the world of wireless networking. Have my 1TB LaCie USB hard drive plugged into my AirPort Extreme. I had high hopes of keeping my iPhoto and iTunes libraries on this hard drive for access downstairs with my MacBook. Got it all setup tonight, and attempted to put a 1.5GB file from my MacBook on the hard drive. According to Finder it was going to take 8 hours to complete the transfer! Does this sound right? I realize USB is slow, but I didn't think that slow. The Belkin-N300 router I had before was faster than this on the USB sharing side.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Late 09 15" MBP and a WD 1TB external HD. I've never had a problem until now. I start up the hard drive, then it loads up fine and the Mac recognizes it just fine. As soon as I try to copy something - doesn't matter how big it is - I get an error and at the end it says "(Error code - 36)". It just says the file cannot be read or written. Weird thing is I can access everything on the hard drive. Anyone have any tips before I try reformatting the HD?

I have an early 2009 macbook, with 320 GB hard drive and running OS Lion, after i upgraded my os to lion, the computer ran perfectly normal, although a little bit slower than running snow Leopard. However, recently I notice my mac become very slow, got rainbow wheel even when i open the safari. then I use the black magic to test the hard disk speed, it appears the read and write speed is only a little over 30mb/s.
i have recently change my keyboard at apple store, I notice my mac slow down after that, do you think it would related?

It's a 27 inch iMac, 10.6.8, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3GB 1067 MHz DDR3, late 2009. Recently (last couple of months) I've noticed it seems to be 'constantly' making the write/rewrite noise and is busy doing something. When this happens, activity is slightly stalled, slowed, paused while it finishes whatever it's doing. I check the Activity Monitor expecting to see high CPU but there is nothing especially hogging CPU. But on the advice of another person answering someone else's similar complaint, checked Disk Activity, which does show sharp peaks. I have cloned the hard drive and cloned it back and the problem persists.

This issue has been killing my work flow for quite awhile. I have a G5 dual 2.0. I can barely read or write files to an external hard drive. Say I try and copy 1.56GB of audio (12 files) from my external drive it will start to copy then stop at 500mb for minutes then start moving as normal and stop again around 900 for minutes.. then again at 1.4. This also happens when writing.
Here is the confusing part. This happens with two external drives (different models) with firewire 400, 800 and USB. I have reinstall OSx. I have repaired permissions and ran repair disc on everything. These hard drives work FLAWLESS with my Macbook Pro as well. Gr what can this be? It takes forever to copy data to or from a drive which is often how I transfer audio between my desktop and laptop. I should soon have Mac Pro money and this crappy G5 can go out the window. I am on 10.4..
hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.

View 15 Replies View RelatedWhen I started uni years ago, we were given free 2G USB flash drives. The drives were partitioned in half so that there was a read/write partition to use for whatever and the other partition is read only - it has a bunch of files relevant to us students and links to all the relevant uni webpages and such. Now that I've finished uni I'd like to use my drive as one whole read/write-able drive. But I'm having trouble getting rid of the read only partition. The get info panel shows that I have only permission to read and there is no option there to change that.
Disk Utility will not allow me to erase, format or re-partition the drive (I can erase the read/write portion though). All the options to do anything to the drive are greyed out, presumably because I cannot write to it. Is there some way I can give myself permission to write to this drive? It is a perfectly good drive and it seems a shame to waste half of its space on stuff I will never use again. I am running OS X - 10.5.6 on an iMac G5 and the drive is formatted as: MS-DOS (FAT12). I have also tried to erase/reformat it in Vista, but cannot because of the write protection.
I want to be able to write to an NTFS-formatted external drive from a Mac (I do not want to create an NTFS partition on my internal drive). I know about the Paragon NTFS For Mac product, but it doesn't get great reviews on CNET or Amazon.

The optical drive on my 17mpb will read and play any DVD I put in just fine, but when it comes to everything else it will not read or write. The drive whirrs around and then spits the media back out.

I was copying some files onto my NTFS drive (i have ntfs-3g installed) earlier in the night, and a few hours later I decide to connect my drive and copy some more files and I get this Time Capsule/machine popup asking if I want the drive to be a a timecapsule drive, I select cancel and start to drag n drop my files. But now the drive just says "Drive "xxx" Cannot be Modified". I tried everything, uninstalled MacFuse, Uninstalled NTFS-3G, reinstalled it all, and I still get this error, Why? It copies fine to my other ntfs drives but not on this one.

It has been used most days and now runs Snow Leopard (for scanners and a canopus video box that don't work with Lion) and Lion. I did a write & write test on the drive recently at both were approx 60 - 65 MB/s. I have another drive in my machine I bought last month, replacing an WD drive that failed in less than 18 months. This new drive (complete same as replacement is a WD Caviar (Black) 1TB 64Mb drive. This drive tests at speeds for 110MB/s. This may seem an obvious question, but will I notice much difference if I swap the drives around and have the newer drive as my boot drive. Also, does having two OS on a HD slow the drive down also?

I've purchased a 2TB external drive, I downloaded and installed macfuse and ntfs-3g AND tuxera ntfs and I formatted the drive to ntfs. Everything was working perfectly (reading and writing) until I unplugged the drive form my computer. So when I plugged the drive back in, it could only read and no longer can write information.
What is going on? I didn't even turn off my computer, the only thing I did was backup my computer with time machine (onto a separate drive not the NTFS one) and plug the new drive back in. I've reinstalled all 3 programs and restarted my computer but nothing seems to be working.
