Mac Pro :: (2008) Intermittent Panic Crashes?

Mar 31, 2012

Desktop crashing irregularly within the last week.  No upgrades of late.  Hardware checked okay.  RAM checked okay. Rest SMC. Rebuilt volume. TechPro no issues. Latest crash report makes me wonder if isn't intego's virus x6. I've read many threads, but nothing is jumping out at me.

Hardware :: 17" MBPro / Early 2008 One Intermittent Key

Apr 21, 2009

I'm at my wits end! My "9(" key works part time. (mostly NOT) There is absolutely no "rhyme or reason" to when it decides to work or not work! I have worked it, massaged it, banged on it, and even removed the key cap and blown it out with compressed air. No difference! Before I order a new keyboard ($84.95) and remove several dozen screws, I'm hoping someone has a "last ditch" technique to try. BTW: 17" MBPro/early 2008/2.6Mhz/OS10.5.6

IMac (Intel) :: Intermittent Blue Squares That Crashes System

Aug 26, 2014

I'm running a late 2009 iMac, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB memory with 27 inch ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 graphics card running 10.9.4 OSX.

I will get spontaneous crash of the system that causes small blue squares over the entire screen. The problem will resolve after 1-2 restarts. I ran the system diagnostic disk and found no problems on the long and short versions. It is an intermittent problem as the display and system are running fine now but daily will have the crash occur. Once the spots are present the computer will be frozen with no response to keys or mouse.

OS X Mavericks :: Keep Getting Kernel Panic Crashes

Dec 6, 2014

start getting kernel panel in mavericks quite a few months agoended up taking to apple...diagnosed as hard drive issue, replaced hard-driveafter hard drive replaced, still getting kernel panics (various things including chrome)format and reinstall OS (Mavericks)took back to apple service provided, replaced hard-drive again.Upgraded to Yosemite however in mid 2010 iMac it really slowed things down. Had to take out third party ram because kept result in crashes that quickly lead to damaged sections on hard-drive so had to reintall OS. Only had 4Gb of original apple ram.due to sluggy performance of yosmite, recently (today) "downgraded" to mavericks.Install third party ram back into computer (now have 12 Gb)Experienced 2 kernal panics already. Can't work out what the issues is

This is pretty bare bones. Not much intsalled since "downgraded"to Mavericks. Log below

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic Crashes Often When A Lot Of Processing Is Going On

Jun 1, 2014

My MacBook Pro has crashed many times over the past month. It seems to happen when a lot of processing is going on. It happens when I have nothing external connected. It happens when different software is running. The easiest way for me to make it happen is to have multiple apps running, especially with some videos. It doesn't seem to matter which software is runing.

In 2012, I installed some 3rd-party RAM (Corsair 2x4GB). Everything has pretty much worked fine until now.

I have already reset the SMC.

Instead of installing OSX on an external drive, booting from that, and trying to make it crash, I'm thinking it might be easier to:Remove a stick of RAM and try to make it crash. If it does, switch it with the other stick and try to make it crash.

If it still crashes, then I guess I would make an image of my system drive, reinstall OSX and copy the image over (I'm not 100% how to do that exactly - I know how to get all my documents back, but I'm afraid I'd break a connection necessary for some programs [like Pro Tools] to work.)

Applications :: Power Point 2008 - Crashes Every Time

Apr 2, 2008

I try to open an exported Keynote '08 document.

Here's what happens: I create a Keynote '08 document and export it as Power Point. If I either double-click or try to open from within PPT '08, I get a crash stating that PPT has encountered an error and needs to quit. This happens EVERY time with EVERY single exported presentation. Oddly, it never happened in PPT '04.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Applications :: Word 2008 Unsaved Doc That Crashes - Is There A Temp/autosave File

May 26, 2010

I have a co-worker that took a ton of notes as I went along and did the "driving" of installing some new server/app and we were going to use that to do the next build. Well it looks like he never hit save one time after starting the doc and then his MBP crashed and it's all gone.

Is there an autosave or temp file created somewhere that it'd be possible to recover this from?

He's running 10.6/snow leopard fwiw.

MacBook Air :: MacBook Air Kernel Panic And Application Crashes?

Nov 19, 2010

I just wanted to share my experiences with my new MacBook Air 13" (2010) 1.86 GHz, 4GB memory, 128GB flash storage. I got my machine a week ago. Booted it up and installed all the Apple updates.

I then synced all my MobileMe stuff, and installed Evernote, Chrome, TextMate and the Flash plug-in. Everything worked flawlessly for 5 days and then I had a kernel panic a couple of minutes after waking from sleep. I got the message that told me to hold the power button to force a restart.

After that I got consistent error messages and program crashes when waking from sleep or when quitting applications - iTunes, Mail.app, Flash plug-in, Evernote, and Safari all seemed affected. Even creating a new user account yielded the same results. Tried repairing permissions, resetting SMC, and PRAM but no change.

I reinstalled the OS last night and so far I haven't had any problems. Ran memory tests, CPU load test, and GPU load tests and nothing seems to force an error. So, I current thinking is that the originally installed OS had some installation issues from the factory or I have an elusive hardware issue.

If anyone has any experience or thoughts, I'd love to hear them. That said, I figured I'd share in case anyone else was having similar issues.

The error message said that either i am not connected to the internet, or the server is too busy to respond. This happens once every other alternate day and it affects the application for the entirety of that day. I will have to wait for the next day, to see if I can successfully log in using that application again. I have tried re-downloading the software again, to no avail.

Power Mac G5 :: Intermittent Racing Fan And Lock-up

Dec 31, 2007

Sometimes when I push the power on button to boot up, the boot is incomplete and fans begin racing. I power off and try again, usually three to five times, each time getting a little further in the boot till finally it is successful. My Apple disk diagnostic detects this logic board error: 2FAN/4/8: Fan for backside. The problem has been around for a year, maybe two, but it is getting worse and worse.

What other things might I do before jumping to the expense of replacing the logic board?

I have run permission repairs, run ONYX maintenance routines, blown out the dust, scanned the surface of my hard drives...

I keep reading and searching for things to try. I'm going to replace the computer battery now. Should I press the SMU reset button?

I've been looking at the long list of read outs in my console and system logs, but don't know how to make sense of it. My system was pretty stable until about a month ago when I tried to update to QT 7.3... at least I think that's what started a host of software problems... including lots of Safari crashes, and problems exporting Final Cut Pro movie files. So I've got what I think are hardware and software issues. But for now I'd like to focus on the hardware problem discribed above with the logic board error. I only mention the other issues in case they might all be related.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Intermittent Shut Down?

Nov 13, 2006

I have one of the 20" iMac G5's covered by the warranty extension for the intermittent shutdown problem. The problem is that I am out of the country, and where I am has very unreliable Apple service. It would be gone for weeks and weeks. I am considering flying back home to get my computer repaired. The computer shuts down multiple times a day without warning.

What are the chances I can find an AASP in the DC area who can do the repair in a day or two. I have read that the repair is only a power supply swap and can be done in 15 minutes. What do y'all think?

My other option is to just buy a new computer and worry about repairing this one in a year or two, which is a $2,000 hassle.

PowerPC :: Intermittent Wireless Connection On G4

May 24, 2007

We have had a little powerbook G4 since about a year now. Such a great little stable machine that we have never had any problems with it. As a consequence, we still know little about it (usually I learn about machines/software by running into problems). Now, the wireless starts working intermittently. Sometimes it works fine and at other times it will not even indicate that our home network is present (whereas we have two other laptops (Win XP) that show that the network is active and has excellent strength). So at these times we are unable to re-connect. This started about two weeks ago and starts to get worse (it will more often not find it). Restarting does not work, but sometimes, when trying again the next day or a couple of hours later, it will work again. Should we just go ahead and get a new wireless card for the p-book?

OS X :: Why Mouse Scroll Ball So Intermittent

Jul 13, 2009

I love the mouse (is it the mighty mouse?) which comes with the imac. The little scroll ball is brilliant especially for say scrolling down in itunes. But I always find that sometimes it won't work in a variety of different ways. i.e.

1) Sometimes it will let me scroll down but not up
2) sometimes up but not down
3) sometimes not up or down
4) occasionally it works both up and down.

As I type this I can go down but not down. I've had this problem on both our older IMac and now our new one. It can't be dust and muck and the ball does rotate. Why can't the ball just work all the time.

Power Mac G5 :: Intermittent System Freezing Around Same Time

Nov 24, 2007

I run a dual 2 GHz G5 PPC (OS 10.4.10) - for the past 4-5 months I've been getting freeze ups for no apparent reason. These nearly always happen around the same time in the evening (around 11 pm) - although not every evening - probably 2/3 times a week. They can happen whether there is any activity on the computer or not. There is never anything on the console log at the time of the freeze up. I'm putting off an archive and install - though I've tried everything else - Disk First aid, Disk Warrior, permissions, fsck, cache cleaning, font checking, Memcheck, re-booting in safe mode, re-applying combo update, resetting the PRAM etc. - I've even tried replacing my secondary hard drive. I've also tried watching the Activity monitor around the problem time - unfortunately this is when it decides not to happen.

The Mac appears to run ok during the day (usually on by 7.30am) One other slightly odd thing is that sometimes at boot up a warning screen will appear and vanish in a 'nanosecond' - I think it could be the device removal warning -though nothing apart from my two internal drives may be connected. I also get this in the start up log 'family specific matching fails' on a number of usb items. Hope someone can help I'm running out of ideas.

During the first months of owning my new 15-inch MBP, I had at least three freezes. I remember there being a huge thread about this, which I can't find now. Happily though, my MBP no longer freezes, but I haven't done anything to it (other than software updates). So, was it a software glitch? Everyone were shouting about some sort of controller chip or something before, if I remember correctly...

MacBook :: Hangs With Weird Intermittent Sound

Sep 11, 2009

Ok, this is kind of hard to describe without a recording of it but my MacBook has this frustrating fault where it beachball's without warning and produces a really hard to describe sound every few seconds. The best I can come with to describe it is an "uh-oh" sound from around the keyboard area. It hangs like this for anything from 2-10 mins and will be pretty much unusable in that time.

Hardware :: Intermittent Power / Boot Prob: G3 B&w?

Jan 7, 2008

My G3 b&w tower seems to have an intermittent problem with booting - every few times I go to boot there is no power. I have tried it with different power cord/socket etc but it seems to make no difference. Any ideas what this could be?

Software :: Unable To Use Internet Intermittent Connection

May 28, 2009

My Internet connection periodically stops. Email access stops, web pages stop, etc. Other comps on my network don't have the issue. It's not all the time, but it is every day. I haven't tested with a new test account, because I simply don't have the down time, but I would love some diagnostic tool or technique that will allow me to continue working and test when the connection goes down...

I am connected to my own secure network that is wep password protected.

Mac Mini :: Intermittent Audio Dropout - CPU Load?

Jun 13, 2012

I recently purchased a new MINI (2.3, i5, 2GB RAM) and I am totally disappointed with the performance.  Specifically, I am fed up with the terrible audio stability.  I have a MOTU Ultralite MK3 Hybrid and generally use the Firewire interface, but this problem also happens when I'm just using the internal audio.  I've never experienced this before on any of the MINIs I've had (this is my third) nor on my old G4.  Now, on what should be the best of the lot, I can hardly stand to listen to anything while trying to do anything else on the computer.  Even simple things like opening a JPG in Preview causes the audio to cut out when the file is being opened.  Virtually every move interferes with the audio and causes a dropout.  It is worst of all when using any kind of browser and trying to have a YouTube video play in the background while surfing on another tab.  I used ot be able to do this all the time without dropouts on my last Mini, but this thing seems to have a serious CPU bottle neck and I don't know where to even begin to try to find out what's going on. I'm really heart broken by this because I am not working and spent money I can't afford to replace my last computer and now I'm stuck with this junky thing that can't even play an MP3 and open a JPG at the same time.  It's like the whole process of dealing with multiple threads has been trashed somehow.  What happened with these new MINIs?  Am I the only person having this problem?  Why can't my computer deal with ANY kind of multitasking without crapping out on the audio?  It shouldn't be like this.  It wasn't like this before.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
