SSD prepare to go mainstream
The GREAT news is that the new Intel SSD controllers are Halogen free. It appears that Apple has avoided Intel SSD because they would hamper Apple's Green initiatives. Those problems are over and hopefully we'll see Intel SSD as options for Macs late this year or early next year.
80GB now is $225 and latency for writes has been reduced
Well that's about what I needed to see. I'm skipping a 320GB Scorpio Black and moving to a 80GB SSD. I really want that performance that only a SSD gives you. I'll move my mass storage to an externally connected FW800 drive.
My first generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery when I restared after installing Autodesk sketchbook pro. This isnt the first time this has happened but last time I was not trying to install any software. Fortunatly, I have time machine backups and therefore have managed to recover the HD to a recent date and I intend to do a complete system check when it has finished.

I have 2 questions:1) I have a 2.GHz Core Duo CPU. I read that this model has a socketed CPU that can be replaced. Is this true?2) If yes, how fast can I go? Can I use the new Core i3 CPU?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have observed the tech specs on numerous models of MacBook Pro, but it says nothing about 2nd generation processors. I assumed that they did have 2nd gen processors as the image they use to advertise the processor is for the 2nd gen series of Intel core processors. I just wanted to confirm this belief.

What's new, according to the release notes:
Firefox Sync is now integrated into the browser
A new tab overview feature has been added
New API for accelerated JavaScript animations
Buffered property in HTML5 video supported
There have also been a bunch of other changes that affect add-on developers, detailed here.
My right shift key has fallen off and the key is pressed and it won't release, so everytime I turn the MacBook on it goes into safe mode. The warranty on the Macbook is runout as well.
View 20 Replies View RelatedNew update for Logic released today, unfortunately it strips out hyperthreading support that previously worked on quad mac pro and iMac i7 machines, causing a major drop in performance from the previous version. I would wait on upgrading until they have a 9.1.3 that fixes this major issue, or at the very least back up 9.1.1 before doing the upgrade.
View 1 Replies View RelatedFollowing an earlier open beta, Adobe on Tuesday released version 2.0 of its Photoshop Lightroom post production photography software, which stands as the company's first application to run 64-bit-native on Apple's Mac OS X Leopard operating system.
The San Jose-based software developer is particularly proud of the accomplishment given that Lightroom's main competitor, Apple's Aperture, has yet to see native 64-bit support.
Adobe has committed to delivering 64-bit versions of Photoshop and its other Creative Suite applications, but said earlier this year that those updates will take considerably longer due to Apple's decision to scrap plans for a 64-bit version of its Carbon developer tool set.
For Lightroom 2.0, 64-bit support will allow the application to address large amounts of memory in excess of 4 gigabytes, which will speed up overall performance for photographers dealing with large scale images that must be swapped into and out of memory during processing-intensive operations.
The software also aims to streamline and accelerate photographers workflows through an enhanced Library module featuring the ability to visually organize images across multiple hard drives. A Library Filter Bar and Suggested Keywords feature work towards simplifying the search and retrieval process.
Two other highly touted features of Lightroom 2.0 are dual-monitor support for maximizing workspace and more efficient printing tools. For instance, the software now arranges photos of multiple sizes on one or many pages with customizable templates to maximize paper and ink. Intelligent algorithms then automatically determine optimal sharpening for screen or print, producing crisper images faster.
Adobe is also rolling out new RAW technology that gives photographers access to flexible camera profiles that will help reduce unexpected changes in the quality of their photographs.
"Camera profiles are the visual starting point for the raw processing workflow, but image preferences vary for every photographer," the company siad. "To minimize surprises, Adobe is supplying default camera profiles that closely emulate the visual looks that photographers are used to seeing from their favorite camera, while also providing the ability to create highly customized profiles to suit different tastes."
Camera profiles are available for immediate download on Adobe Labs for use with Lightroom 2 and Camera RAW 4.5, along with a DNG Profile Editor for the community to test and create their own profiles. The tools currently support over 190 camera models including the Olympus E 420 and E 520 models.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 is available for immediate download (or shipping) through the Adobe Store in English, French and German with the Japanese language version planned to be released at a future date. New licenses cost $299 and upgrades fetch $99.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

I think it is stuck because it is bright red and not black. Is there anyway to fix this? I have tried jScreenFix without any luck. Is there anything apple will do with this? Spending this amount of money on a new computer it should not come with a stuck pixel...

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust got the email from MonoPrice that their MiniDP -> DVI and MiniDP -> HDMI cables are available (still no mdp->VGA). I was going to get one, but I am getting a monitor with full size Display port so I just got their MiniDP->DP cable instead. Thought this might interest anyone needing direct to DVI or HDMI. If I decide to get one I'll post up with details. seems interesting that they don't have a picture yet, but it is only $15 so I imagine it isnt something with a big bulky adapter. to DVI: [URL]

View 18 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the forums and to macs. I'm having serious video card issues and everything I've read on the subject suggests that the card has heat sink issues and that a new card is required. I'm out of warranty and was just wondering if I had to go through the apple site to purchase a new card or could I just figure out what models are compatible with my mac and purchase one from a retailer or ebay?
The card I'm using now is ATI Radeon X1900 XT and is PCIe bus. I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I have a mac pro that I purchased in 2007.
If there's any additional information I need to post just let me know.
I have a 2nd gen MB and recently got a 5th gen MB (white) with NVidia adapter. I moved my HDD from 2nd gen to 5th hoping all would be fine. Although system seems to work fine, I have problems on boot (command line text appears). I made HDD verification with DU, all seems to be fine. There are many problems with Disk Permissions and they can not be somehow repaired.
What would you suggest to move my HDD in the best way? Shall I try to solve boot problem? Or shall I just format the HDD on 5th and restore the system with Time Machine or sth?
i've done my homework and searched this forum and i actually read most of the posts that cover this thing. The thing is, everything inside my mac pro kciks ass expect my gpu... its the x1900 which is really, really bad, at least for gaming; bad fps, high temps, bad usage of memory or memory leaks for no reason, MANY new games have bugs that are related ONLY to this card (like gta iv) and also it gets all dusted so easilly. So anyway, i was looking at the HD4890. I understand that there's not even a mac edition of it (that wouldn't really work on a 1st gen mac pro anyway right?), but i was thinking if i could use a flashed one. The thing is, i've heard a lot of people talking about another card, the HD4870, which i think has a similar rom with the HD4890, but of course i could be wrong. So about the 4870, i heard people saying they got it to work, for bothed a flashed pc version and the mac edition... could anyone confirm this? If those cards do work, i cant think of why the 4890 couldn't.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am considering replacing my 1st Gen Mac Pro with a new iMac quad core 7i and I would like to get an idea of how much my Mac Pro is worth before I consider selling it. Places like Gazelle say its worth over $1500 but I find that hard to believe. I believe its the 2.2GH or 2.26 GH but I have upped the Ram to 12GB and I have 2 x 250GB drives and 2x320GB drives in there, also added Blue-tooth and I have all original boxes, cables, etc. I even have a newer Wireless keyboard and mouse that I will send along with it. It has Leopard and iLife 09/iWork 09. And the stock 256K nVidia Video.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI know that there are topics asking what is going to be in the next Mac upgrade all the time, but what I wanted to ask you is more about Steve's "The next generation of MacBooks" quote.
It seems that the Back to the Mac philosophy will not apply just to the Air but will go further on the other laptops series.
I definetely see the HDD disappear from the next gen of MacBooks to give space to the SSD cards.
So far all the MacBook can get up to 500GB HDD and the Pros have also the option up to 512GB SDD.
However even if this is quite predictable I would like to know your opinion on another matter: DVDs.
Will Apple gamble on removing the DVD drive or this could be too early?
I'll be doing some work with Photoshop, iMovie, and a fair amount of Handbrake-type encoding. I'm tilting back and forth with getting one of the older generation (1st or 2nd) Mac Pros that I could upgrade myself and the current or upcoming Mini/Mini Server.

My video card is the 7300 GT and I am working with a standard aluminum Apple keyboard and a Microsoft mouse. The only thing I expect to have trouble with is my external iSight, but I don't really need that on the Windows side.
I see Apple has added a lower price refurb 3.06 previous generation (I've been waiting ) price $1599. Total with tax $1710.00 New 2.93 at Powermax no tax total $1788.00. What would you advise? What to do? New or old? If the 3.06 was a bit cheaper I would definitely go for that as I think it is better machine, but for so close a price is it better get new?
