Mac OS X Lion Server :: Unable To Upgrade From 10.6.8 Configuration

May 9, 2012

I'm unable to upgrade from my 10.6.8 configuration on my Mac Pro running OS X Server to OS X Lion Server. I've purchased both Lion and Lion Server, but each time I attempt to run the updates to 10.7+ I get error messages saying to install 10.7 or to download Lion Server - though when I do that it tells me that I need to install 10.7.How to migrate to Lion Server.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Upgrade The X (desktop) To Server?

Apr 29, 2012

I have recently purchased a Mac Mini with Lion X. I also have a couple of MBPs. I'd like to have the Mac Mini act as the place where all the Time Machine backups go (I have a 1 TB external disk hooked up to the Mac Mini). Apparently, I must have Lion x *Server* running on the Mac Mini for it to become available as a Time Machine destination for the MBPs.  How can I upgrade my Mac Mini from Lion X to Lion X Server?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: DNS Upgrade From 10.6.8 To 10.7.3?

Apr 12, 2012

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8 up to Lion Server 10.7.3. All services seemed to come through ok except DNS. None of the records on the server resolve anymore. I have setup forwarding IPs when the requested domain isn't in the local database, and those still seem to work becuase clients can still resolve external websites just fine, however no internal services resolve. I can't even get the server itself to resolve DNS entries even though its DNS server is set as 127.0.0.1.

MacBook Pro :: Upgrade Ram Module Configuration

Nov 13, 2010

Just thinking down the road, so please bear with me. Regarding adding a HD and possibly ram at a later date. I have a couple questions...1.) If adding or replacing in the first year, will that void your warranty??2.) How is the ram module configured on a MacBook pro?? If it cam with 4 GB then can I just add a 4 GB card or do you have to get a straight 8 GB card??3.) If upgrading to a bigger HD, can you just do a backup restore or do you have to totally reinstall from the scratch??

OS X :: SMB Server Configuration - Permission Denied

Oct 7, 2009

I'm trying to configure a mac as a smb server and am encountering numerous difficulties in doing so. While I managed to get around most of them, one remains unsettled. I have my samba server running and what to add new users and passwords. Yet, when I want to use useradd or adduser, neither of the commands are recognized in the Mac OS X 10.6 terminal.

Moreover, the smbpasswd command is either non recognized when using sudo or, when logged in as a root, I get: sh: /usr/bin/smbpasswd: Permission denied
I also tried adding users through webmin, but I can only synchronize does on the Mac and when I want to modify the passwords, I get: Access control violation: Failed to change password using smbpasswd:

How do you add and update smb users on Mac OS X ?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Now Reboots Randomly After 10.7.4 Upgrade

May 14, 2012

I have been running a Mac Mini OS X Server for last 3 months without a single error. I have 2 of them.Yesterday, I upgraded to 10.7.4 (from 10.7.3) and today, one of my servers has crashed twice. Both times, it has rebooted (no Monitor attached to Mac Mini). It is out of service for 10 mins or so. This concerns me, as it never rebooted before 10.7.4. Also, other Mac Mini OS X Server doesn't have an issue.I usually wait a few weeks before installing software updates on servers - but I decided to yesterday (Sunday), because I had some time, stupid me.

Hardware :: New Mac Pro Server Configuration To Replace Xserve?

Nov 5, 2010

Apple on Friday added a new server option to its Mac Pro lineup Friday, with a $2,999 system that is designed to replace the Xserve hardware which will be discontinued in early 2011.

The Mac Pro Server comes with one 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor, 8GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives. It also has Mac OS X Server unlimited with a client license, and an ATI HD 5770 graphics card with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.

The new configuration starts at $2,999 and ships in 2 to 4 weeks. Apple's previously available quad-core and 8-core Mac Pro systems ship within 24 hours, while the 12-core model takes 3 to 5 days to ship.

The new Mac Pro Server can also be upgraded, with custom build-to-order options offering up to two 2.93GHz six-core Intel Xeon "Westmere" processors, for a total of 12 processing cores at an added cost of $3,475. Users looking for the best possible system can also add $3,400 to the price and get 32GB of RAM.

The new hardware became available Friday after Apple quietly announced on its website that it would no longer offer its Xserve rackmounted servers after Jan. 31, 2011. New Xserver orders will be accepted through that date, and the hardware will be backed by Apple's standard one-year warranty.

Apple also issued documentation aimed at helping customers transition from Xserve to Apple's remaining server options, the Mac mini Server and Mac Pro Server. Apple's guide notes that the 12-core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server meets or exceeds the performance of the baseline Xserve hardware.

However, while Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server is much less powerful than Xserve, Apple's smallest desktop footprint has been the company's most popular server system since its introduction in the fall of 2009.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

OS X Technologies :: Upgrade From Snow Leopard Server To Lion?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: 10 User File Sharing Limit After 10.7.4 Upgrade?

Jun 14, 2012

Has anyone noticed a strange 10 user file sharing limit after upgrading to 10.7.4 server?Using DeployStudio to mass deploy 10.7.4 Lion images in a school. Since upgrading to 10.7.4 server, I am now limited to 10 logins on the repository. Thought this might be a DeployStudio issue, but it seems more like the server is imposing the restriction. If I do a manual login to the shared folder where the image files are kept on the server, I can only do it from 10 computers and computer 11 will refuse to login.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unable To Upgrade To 10.7.4?

Jun 20, 2012

I recently replaced my MacBook Pro's (13-inch, Mid 2012) default hard drive with a third party SSD. I'm not sure if this would have any affect on it, but I can't upgrade to OS X 10.7.4. I used Lion Recovery Disk Assistant to install Lion on the drive and to bring it up to 10.7.3, and when it was finished, I checked Software Update and there was no update for 10.7.4. I downloaded the update directly from the Apple website (both the client and the combo updates) and neither of them will allow me to update! I get a message in the Installer that says, "Mac OS Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet thre requirements for this update." Again, I'm not sure if this has to do with the third party SSD I installed or not. Other than the inability to update the OS, the SSD works wonderfully.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unable To Download And Upgrade V10.6.1 To V10.6.3?

Jun 18, 2012

I was doing a software update in an outdated Mac OS X 10.7.3 to get all the latest updates through its Apple Software Update. However, one of them failed to upgrade: iTunes v10.6.1 to v10.6.3. After rebooting to let Mac OS X 10.7.3 to 10.7.4, Apple Software Updater shows it 97% partially downloaded. I have over 31 GB free, so it can't be a free disk space problem. I tell it to resume download, but it quickly fails from 169 MB to about 172.7 MB (176.9 MB is the whole size) with "The update "iTunes" can't be installed. The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during the downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs."

It also won't let me click + to add a new user. This works fine on all of the other folders on this same drive. Should I just reset all of the ACLs for that folder in the Terminal and try again?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Unable To Log In User At This Time / Opening Up All Ports

May 3, 2012

I've got a lion 10.7.3 server and several Lion client boxes all attached via ethernet to an airport extreme.

I've got a bona fide certificate that seems to have installed correctly, and the client is talking to the open directory server

Without fail, I get a message "unable to log in the user at this time" on each of the clients...

UNLESS I open up all ports on my airport extreme to the server.

I've tried opening individual ports for AFP, profile manager (1640, 2195), open ldap (389, 636) and even kerberos (88).  Even with all of these open, it still doesn't work.  I have to open up everything to get the error to go away - then the users can log in just fine.

Note, I'm logging in from the local network to a server on the local network, so this just seems bizarre.

I don't have the logs on this computer, but I recall that the error was occurring when it tried to mount the home directory, after authentication.  It was an error 64 from homedirmounter (if memory serves).
