I have a 09 Mac Pro Quad and recently picked up a 13" MacBook Pro. Is there a way to connect my MBP to the MP via firewire so the HD's I have in the MP are seen on the MBP? I want to use the disk space on my MP as backup storage for my MBP but via firewire.

The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIf I decided to end up going for a Mac Pro with pure speed, I would want to fill it with 4 SAS drives. I've heard that SAS drives are completely unrivaled in speed (15,000 rpm ), but does this really correlate to high speeds? Is Apple's RAID card the best solution for SAS drives? I would likely use RAID 5 setup for striping benefits as well as data redundancy.
Now, I'm a bit of a storage junkie, and SAS drives won't be a viable storage solution for everything I have already (and even more in the future), so external storage would be a must. I have a drobo already, and it is a much cheaper solution than getting something like an Xserve RAID, and firewire 800 is plenty fast for streaming video, even to multiple sources.
I am looking for an eSata, Firewire 800, USB external enclosure that has removable trays for two or more hard drives. Specifically I am trying to find one that has the similar apperance of the Mac Pro, aluminum case and such.

I just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.Â

i just thought it was compatible because it said it was made for the mac and i really wanted to use my surround sound system. So my dilemma is that it came with a firewire 400 cable and I have a firewire 800 port on my mac mini which i bought recently. I've looked for some adapters and I saw one that said it accepts male firewire 400 6 pin and at the other end is a 9 pin firewire 800. it says its designed to connect your firewire 400 cable so it can be used in firewire 800 ports for newer macs. I'm not 100 percent sure what all that means and I didn't want to go buy something without being sure that's what I need.

I'm going to use FW400(since my MB pro has no 800 port) and partition this into two 1.5TB partitions. one for storage, and one for time machine backup. My question is if I choose 2 partitions in disk utility, will it automatically know to use one of the 1.5TB Seagate HD for one partition and the other 1.5TB seagate for the 2nd partition? Or will it use half of one and half the other? I would like one partition to be one seagate 1.5TB HD, and the 2nd partition to be the other, that way if one fails I have a backup (using Time Machine with one partition to backup the other 1.5TB drive).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got the iMac Wednesday and have been setting it up all week/weekend. I finally down to the end of getting time capsule setup. Here's what I'd like to have:
Internal iMac HD: 500gb
time capsule HD: 1tb (750gb backup, 250gb usable space)
Right now I've got it set up and I'm about to pick the drive in time machine, but it looks like as soon as I do that it's going to just start backing up my internal HD to the time capsule's HD? Will I later be able to set aside 250gb of time capsule space to use as storage? Do I need to set up something before I backup to it? Is this even possible, or is this what everyone is talking about when they say time capsule can't be used as a NAS?
I just bought a MBP 2010 with the i7, and I'm trying to figure out what to do for external storage and backup since this is my first Mac ever. I have an Icy Dock with a 1TB harddrive in it, but it only has eSATA and USB ports. USB would not be preferable for trying to back up stuff. I was reading these forums about eSATA ExpressCards, but they seem really suspect (kernel panics sound terrifying) and a lot of work to get going. I was thinking about just getting another enclosure with FireWire 800, but can't seem to find any advice on good ones. I was wondering if I should just get a new external harddrive. I would like to get out of this without having to buy too much new stuff. Can somebody give a recommendation regarding whether I should get an expresscard, new enclosure, or new external?
View 3 Replies View RelatedLate last night I accidentally ejected Time Machine from the Devices section of the Finder window. I've now spent half a day trying to get the computer to recognise my external hard drive again as attempting to use Time Machine results in the message "Storage Machine for Time Machine backup can't be found." I can find my WD desktop 1TB drive with Disk Utility but not in Finder. If I click on the WD Ext HDD 1021 Media in Disk Utility there is the option to Verify in the top menu, but nothing happens when I click on it. All the options verify, and repair are greyed out. I've checked the computer hard drive and done the verify and repair disk and permissions process.
I've turned off the computer, disconnected the external hard drive, turned off time machine, then turned everything back on but still can't get the external hard drive to be recognized. This is extremely frustrating and I have run out of ideas. I know it all started when I clicked on the eject button for the external hard drive in the devices section of the finder. Such a simple mistake, but I have searched everywhere online and can't find a resolution that I can actually try. I can't verify and repair the WD hard drive if these options aren't available in Disk Utility.

Anyways, on a PC you go to network under my computer (or just computer or 7 now) and in there it is listed along with the other computers on the network. That's all good. On the Mac side you can see it as well, and that's all good. Here is what I am trying to figure out; on a pc in the computer navigation bar you can type addresses. For example the drive was not popping up earlier under the "network", so I just type "//DriveName" into the bar and it opened it up as if I had clicked it.

I would like to accomplish this through FireWire, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I know about Target Mode, but I don't think this is what I want to do. So I decided to just suck it up and use USB.
Now apple has taken away the express card slot, is there any way to utilise eSata on a MBP? The only conceivable way would be through firewire.
I have a 15" MBP and am now having trouble discovering my printer on it. I have the printer connected to my iomega powered hard drive which in turn connects to my MBP via firewire 800. Earlier the printer was working fine when the iomega was connected via a USB port. BUt im short on USB ports (one goes to my Companion 5 speakers and the second to a 2nd display besides the mini DVI display) hence need to connect via firewire.
