Mar 17, 2012Why won't Lion play DVDs?
View 3 RepliesWhy won't Lion play DVDs?
View 3 RepliesI have been using Macs since 1992, upgrading to new operating systems as they came out. Now have Lion 10.7.3. I have recorded video/movie clips mostly from online sources. I have never had problems playing these back until now in all my previous Macs. Now some will play, others when I click the play button come up with the message "supported disc not available". Do I have to buy an old Mac computer with earlier OSX operating systems to play these again? How can I transfer the content to a form that Lion will recognize if they will not open.

I purchased a Mac Mini about 2 months ago and was making DVD backups with a Samsung SE-S084D external drive. The first ones went OK, but now the system suddenly stopped recognizing blank DVDs... the drive reads all other discs unless the ones that are blank. It keeps saying The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.Â

Old Dvd's will play, But most New Dvd's will not play. I insert them and it revs up like they are loading then it kicks them out. Sometimes I can put an older dvd in to get it started and then I can eject the older dvd and then insert a new one and it will then play.

I found a script to do so, but I get an error message about audio tracks every time.
tell application "VLC"
activate
OpenURL "dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1"
play
next
fullscreen
end tell
Anyone know of a sure-fire way to have inserted DVDs automatically play in VLC?
My white macbook (running 10.6) will not play a commercial dvd (BBC's Battlefield Britain: Boudicca's revolt ). When entering the dvd into my mac it shows a file called dvdvolume with a red warning circle in right corner of it. No files are inside the folder. The dvd plays on other dvd players.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWe have recorded movies from our TIVO to a DVD burner. Once on the hard-drive of the burner we burn them to DVD. Some, actually most will not play on my mac. It seams that the DVD +R never play and the -R sometimes play. The ones that do play open in DVD player, Quick time , and front row. The ones that do not play, do not play in any program. When it appears in the Desk top I click on the disk and it shows the audio files and the video files in separate folders. Also I have noticed that the DVD's that do play have a number appearing under the disk when it shows up on the desk top and the ones that do not play do not.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to get my new iMac to play CDs and DVDs that have been created on a PC. All I can get it to do is say "Supported disk not available" Is there something I am not doing right? Or do I have to download some other program to get it to interface with the PC or what. I am brand new to the Mac world.

I just got my computer back from having the hard drive replaced and now every time I try to put a DVD in, it spins for a minute and then just spits the dvd right back out. They play fine on the dvd player and ps3 but not the imac.

My Macbook pro will not play CDs/DVDs at all anymore. Every time I insert a CD or DVD it will accept it but then it will make odd noises and eject the CD/DVD. Is there anything I can do at home to try to solve it before I run to the apple store?

I purchased a Macbook a couple of weeks ago as I am currently traveling and needed a laptop bad. This evening I put a DVD in and it wouldn't play. It didn't even read anything.I then tried a number of variable CDs and the same thing happened. This macbook isn't even one month old and is in perfect condition. Is this just pure bad look and the laser has broken before it was even put to use?

My MacBook Pro plays DVDs with movies on, but no CDs with music, or DVDs with software on them. It just makes a noise for about 30 seconds, then spits them out. What do I do? I know there's a lot about this issue already on the forums/the internet, but I've never come across a fix. I didn't buy my MacBook directly from Apple. Will they still fix it if I pay them?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt has decided that it just won't recognize them. I played lots of 'em for a few months, but now when I try it says there are no files the mac os x can read.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAnyone know of a converter that will convert avi, wmv, divx etc to burn on dvd-rs and play on any home dvd player?
I have toast, visual hub and mac the ripper.. vhub converted one to dvd but it only played for 6 secs.. toast convert?
I have an old DVD custom made from old super - 8 home movies. It plays well in a home DVD player meant to plug into the TV. My MBP 15" mid-2010 8x SuperDrive optical drive cannot play this - on calling up the files to be played, I see a folder with grayed-out files. Furthermore, I can't get out of the DVD player easily and have to do the Force Quit to shut down the program and use Disc Utility to eject the disc. (I use Disc Utility to dismount all types of discs, by habit). My SuperDrive works fine for commercial DVD movies, reading and writing CDs, etc. The "home movies" DVD's file extensions are: .vob, .ifo, .bup. The "home movie" files are:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOBÂ and so on for the chapters
Do I need to have the "home movie" DVD remastered in a different format?

I have a 2009 2.0 C2D Mac Mini that I upgraded to 4 GB RAM from the standard 1 GB RAM. It does not read CDs/DVDs or any other optical media. When I check the profiler for the SATA connection, I get:
OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:
Model:OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S
Revision:2AHF
Native Command Queuing:No
Detachable Drive:No
Power Off:No
Async Notification:Yes
When I check the profiler for disc burning, I get:
OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:
Firmware Revision:2AHF
Interconnect:ATAPI
Burn Support:Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache:2048 KB
Reads DVD:Yes
CD-Write:-R, -RW
DVD-Write:-R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies:CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media:Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
It seems the controller is good and is seeing the DVD drive, but it just won't read anything included DVD movies and CDs that I bought off the shelf.
My Mac Mini accepts cd's / dvd's but just spits them back out. I don't think it has a disk in it but it won't accept a disk.

I have been having some problems recently with my 06 mac mini that i got in august time its the intel one with GMA950 and a superdrive (i think!) lol its the mashita UJ-846 one. Thats what system profiler says at least lol. :-)
Anyways enough about that, for a while now, it wont accept DVDs or CDs in the drive. I have tried to boot off the install DVD and do hardware test, but the DVD ejected. and it just booted straight into the OS..
Is it time to get a new DVD drive? i got a lacie D2 a coupla years back to help with burning DVDs, cos it wouldnt burn DVDs neither, whether thats cos its the superdrive or cos it was failing, i dont know. At the time i searched about and it seemed like it was a DVD drive that was prone to failing on people. Is there anything i can do to test, n see how busted this bad boy actually is??
Its not essential that i need it working as i use the other DVD drive when required. But if i did want to install SL on it, that could be a bit problematic..
I'm not seeing a disc show up in the sidebar of my mac mini running Lion 7.3 after enabling CD and DVD sharing on my Macbook Pro (running snow leopard 6.8)

Does anyone have a recommendation of which external drive to purchase for my Macbook air so I can play my DVDs and load Microsoft Office onto my Macbook Air?

Since doing a clean install of Lion onto my system, I have not been able to play music cd's bought from the high street. My system keep ejecting them after about 20 seconds. Movie DVD's play straight away.

Been searching online for an easy way to copy DVDs to the hard drive so they can be watched without the external DVD player needed for the MacBook Air.I've converted the DVD to a .DMG file using the disk utility tool and then mounted it...but cant figure out how to make it actually execute inside of QuickTime...
I know I have seen some of these posts outside the apple support forums, but I am having an increasing problem playing DVDs. Older movies seem to have less problem, but when I get a movie from Netflix they often won't be recognized by my 2010 Mac Mini. The drive has had some problems ejecting discs in the past, and this inability to recognize the disc and then ejecting it is getting worse. Since it is not 100% of the time, the genius bar can't diagnoze it. Â
I only have 1 TV in the house, and want to be able to reliably use my Mac Mini to watch a DVD when the wife or kids are using the TV.Â

Ever since I updated my '10 Mac Pro to Lion (months ago), my original built in superdrive will not read any DVD's or CD's, commercial or not, that have data on them... It simply assumes the disk is blank when it clearly isn't. Now, if I insert a blank DVD and burn it, it works like a charm... but it will then NOT read the disk that it just burned??? How and why did Lion break my superdrive?
