Intel Mac :: How To Play CDs / DVDs Created On PC
Apr 22, 2012
I have been trying to get my new iMac to play CDs and DVDs that have been created on a PC. All I can get it to do is say "Supported disk not available" Is there something I am not doing right? Or do I have to download some other program to get it to interface with the PC or what. I am brand new to the Mac world.

I just got my computer back from having the hard drive replaced and now every time I try to put a DVD in, it spins for a minute and then just spits the dvd right back out. They play fine on the dvd player and ps3 but not the imac.

Old Dvd's will play, But most New Dvd's will not play. I insert them and it revs up like they are loading then it kicks them out. Sometimes I can put an older dvd in to get it started and then I can eject the older dvd and then insert a new one and it will then play.

I found a script to do so, but I get an error message about audio tracks every time.
tell application "VLC"
activate
OpenURL "dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1"
play
next
fullscreen
end tell
Anyone know of a sure-fire way to have inserted DVDs automatically play in VLC?

My white macbook (running 10.6) will not play a commercial dvd (BBC's Battlefield Britain: Boudicca's revolt ). When entering the dvd into my mac it shows a file called dvdvolume with a red warning circle in right corner of it. No files are inside the folder. The dvd plays on other dvd players.

We have recorded movies from our TIVO to a DVD burner. Once on the hard-drive of the burner we burn them to DVD. Some, actually most will not play on my mac. It seams that the DVD +R never play and the -R sometimes play. The ones that do play open in DVD player, Quick time , and front row. The ones that do not play, do not play in any program. When it appears in the Desk top I click on the disk and it shows the audio files and the video files in separate folders. Also I have noticed that the DVD's that do play have a number appearing under the disk when it shows up on the desk top and the ones that do not play do not.

My Macbook pro will not play CDs/DVDs at all anymore. Every time I insert a CD or DVD it will accept it but then it will make odd noises and eject the CD/DVD. Is there anything I can do at home to try to solve it before I run to the apple store?

I purchased a Macbook a couple of weeks ago as I am currently traveling and needed a laptop bad. This evening I put a DVD in and it wouldn't play. It didn't even read anything.I then tried a number of variable CDs and the same thing happened. This macbook isn't even one month old and is in perfect condition. Is this just pure bad look and the laser has broken before it was even put to use?

My MacBook Pro plays DVDs with movies on, but no CDs with music, or DVDs with software on them. It just makes a noise for about 30 seconds, then spits them out. What do I do? I know there's a lot about this issue already on the forums/the internet, but I've never come across a fix. I didn't buy my MacBook directly from Apple. Will they still fix it if I pay them?

I have been using Macs since 1992, upgrading to new operating systems as they came out. Now have Lion 10.7.3. I have recorded video/movie clips mostly from online sources. I have never had problems playing these back until now in all my previous Macs. Now some will play, others when I click the play button come up with the message "supported disc not available". Do I have to buy an old Mac computer with earlier OSX operating systems to play these again? How can I transfer the content to a form that Lion will recognize if they will not open.

I have an old DVD custom made from old super - 8 home movies. It plays well in a home DVD player meant to plug into the TV. My MBP 15" mid-2010 8x SuperDrive optical drive cannot play this - on calling up the files to be played, I see a folder with grayed-out files. Furthermore, I can't get out of the DVD player easily and have to do the Force Quit to shut down the program and use Disc Utility to eject the disc. (I use Disc Utility to dismount all types of discs, by habit). My SuperDrive works fine for commercial DVD movies, reading and writing CDs, etc. The "home movies" DVD's file extensions are: .vob, .ifo, .bup. The "home movie" files are:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOBÂ and so on for the chapters
Do I need to have the "home movie" DVD remastered in a different format?

I had set up my iCloud account, but for some reason, it didn't follow through. So, after resetting my mac ID, I set up another iCloud account. But every time I try to access it, and type in my Email addy, it says my email address is already taken that's absurd, since I had already created it! It suggests others, that I don't want to use! What's the deal here with not allowing the Email addy I choose before? I finally put in a number at the end, & it went through. Now I "supposedly" have 2 accounts - But, I'd like to get rid of one of them - the second. The reason is, that ever since I created that second iCloud account, (it shows up on my Email inbox), I still can't access it.
Second, when I tried to access this support group, it automatically has my email address, but it kept saying my Password is wrong, when I've used this password for my mac stuff, since 2006, when I got my first mac. Finally, I put in my "num de plum" & was able to get in to do this one.I am still unable to access it. How & where is it on the computer? The only place I can find anything about iCloud is in Systems Preferences.
Third - I did "goof" by listing my new iMac (the '06 one crashed) as 10.4.7, when it is 10.7.4 - So Sorry, but I am dyslexic & dyscalcula! Some fella said I should "amend my signature" in a rather demeaning way. (I've been using computers since dos - 1991)I have now done that. But he also suggested "I understand you had a MobileMe account and have migrated it? If so, go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign out. Now sign back in with your @me.com address.I've never had a "MobleMe" account. The only account I had was an iMac account, ca. 2006, but never renewed.SO I guess that won't work. What will? I am still unable to access or find it. How & where is iCloud on the computer? The only place I can find anything about iCloud is in Systems Preferences. going to a new OS, that is very different than your old one, even if it's mac to mac, is no easy trip.

My iMac is currently rejecting (spitting out any and all) CDs but accepting and playing DVDs. I have re-set the system management (shut down, unplugged, etc.) and, though I read somewhere to re-set power managment unit, cannot see direct instrucitons on how this should be done on an iMac. Couple of curious points: First, even newly played or burned discs have been emerging a little scratched for as long as I can remember. And, sometimes when playng a DVD, it has to "skip over damaged area."
This is my iMac 27" OS X 10.6.8

my iMac won't read some dvds. Specifically at the moment, a factory Paul McCartney live dvd. When inserted, it tries to read it, whirrs and clunks for about 20 seconds then ejects it. It plays on my old G4 1.2dp and both my bluRay player and dvd players in my lounge. I've had problems like this with dvd-r's before but not with factory made dvd's. Since it plays on my home system and G4 I guess it's not a region issue (I'm in the UK) and I can't find any info on the dvd that says it's any particular region. Other factory dvd's can play fine?

I'm running Snow Leopard on an Intel iMac, everything up to date, and Disk Utility finds no error on any of the drives. I have a 1 TB external drive connected to USB (bus powered, with a power USB connection to a powered hub, so it has more than enough power). Time Machine fails with a totally unhelpful message that the backup could not be created because a folder could not be created. The external drive has 318 GB used, 481 GB available, so it's not disk space. Yesterday I repartitioned the external drive using the GUID partition scheme, creating a 750 GB Mac extended journaled partition "Time 1GB Tosh" just for Time Machine. I've been through the Time Machine Troubleshooting FAQs
